Murder, Take Two

Rate this book
When a copycat killer has reporter Lee Barrett brushing up on ancient history, it’s a test where failure could be lethal . . .

As a Salem, Massachusetts, native, WICH-TV field reporter and amateur sleuth Lee Barrett is well versed in the region’s lore. So when the murder of revered local professor Samuel Bond resembles a killing from almost two centuries ago, everyone is on edge. Especially assistant professor Cody McGinnis . . .

Not only did Cody have differences with Bond, he even taught a course on the historic murder. And when his fingerprints and ladder are found at the crime scene, the police are certain of his guilt. Cody’s family, however, believes otherwise and asks Lee for assistance. Now, with the help of her clairvoyant cat, O’Ryan, her tech-savvy librarian aunt and housemate Ibby, and Pete Mondello, her handsome detective beau, Lee will delve deeper than ever into Salem’s past—and into her own psychic gifts—to find the real killer—before someone else is history . . .

Carol J. Perry is the author of the Witch City Mystery series and the Haunted Haven series, both from Kensington Publishers. The Witch City stories take place in the magical city of Salem, Massachusetts--the "Witch City." Carol was actually born in Salem (on Halloween eve!) and knows the city well. The Haunted Haven books take place in Carol's adopted home state of Florida. As an experienced travel writer for magazines and newspapers, Carol knows her way around the Sunshine State too. The Salem books are based of course on a real city but Haven, Florida is made up of bits and pieces of some of the Sunshine State's charming older towns--bypassed by the theme parks. Readers of the Witch City books have come to know O'Ryan, a most remarkable cat. The new series introduces Finn, a lovable Golden Retriever.
Carol lives in the Tampa Bay area of Florida with her husband Dan.

This is a cozy mystery, and this is the 10th book the Witch City series. I had high hopes for this book, but it did not live up it my hopes for it. It was just ok. I personal did not love the mystery part of this book because I found it boring and not very well done. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Publishing Corporation) or author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Net Galley and the Kensington Books in return for an honest review. The release date for this book was 25 Aug 2020

This was an okay cozy Murder mystery. I had a hard time getting into the plot. It didn’t have that grabs your attention factor. The main character just seemed very two dimensional to me and I felt the pace of the story could have moved along and flowed better. It wasn’t a bad story just an average one.

I usually stick to holiday cozy mysteries, they are just more my jam, but I have enjoyed all the books I've read in this series so far, so decided to branch out from my solely "holiday" stance. And again, this was another impressive addition to the story. I love these character's. Every one is likable. The mystery kept me hooked. I loved that the author used a true story murder and weaved it into the story, and I LOVED that CLUE (my favorite board game) was also used as part of the storyline. My only complaint, and it is not even a complaint really, but this author needs to move Pete and Lee's relationship forward a little faster. Why are these two not living together yet?! 😂

Lee is a reporter with WICH TV in Salem, MA, residing with her Aunt Ibby, and their cat O'Ryan. When a local professor is murdered in the same way as a crime which took place in the nineteenth century, they endeavor to help prove the innocence of the only suspect. The real murderer is revealed when Lee and friends decide to stage a love-action version of the board game Clue If you are looking for a fun cat cozy mystery with a touch of the paranormal, give this book a try. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

I'm in "book love" with the Witch City Mysteries - the series is the perfect balance of mystery, paranormal, action, history and romance! When Lee Barrett a "scryer" (person who sees visions of the past, present or future) and local tv reporter for WICH-TV, in Salem, MA, finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation, that is eerily reminiscent of a murder committed 100 years ago, Lee and her friends are in for a dangerous time from both past and present foes!

I enjoy everything about the series- Lee is smart, kind and a loyal friend. Her housemate and crime solving partner, Aunt Ibby, boyfriend and police detective Pete, her tarot card reading friend River and, of course, O'Ryan the mysterious "familiar" of an infamous dead witch - all bring their own mystery, humor and personalities to the series. The paranormal elements are fun but not overwhelming to the story. The history of Salem is presented in a way that allows the reader to fully enjoy the mystery.

This was the first book I read in the series and I can't wait to catch up with Lee and her adventures!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed, in this review, are my own.

I always enjoy Witch City Mysteries. It’s like coming home to old friends. In this installment, a murder of a local professor seems to echo a murder in Salem’s past. The primary suspect is the nephew of family friends. Lee covers the murder for WICH-TV and does some sleuthing on the side with clever Aunt Ibby. To me, this book was a little more slow moving than the others in the series, but enjoyable nonetheless. Reading books by Carol J. Perry is always fun!

This series has always been fun, but I struggled hard to get through this book.
I love Lee and her aunt but I didn’t get that happy feeling I usually get when I start a new book.
The mystery itself was interesting, but it just seemed off to me.
I was also surprised that Aunt Ibby was interested in another man, since I thought she had feelings for someone else.
I hope that I will continue to love the rest of the books in this series.

Another great mystery in one of my favorite series. This time Lee and detective boyfriend Pete investigate a murder that has eerie similarities to a long ago crime. I really enjoyed that the author wrote about a real murder that occurred in Salem almost 200 years ago. Very interesting and exciting.

Just when you think a series cannot get any better, the author gives the reader a gem like this! A copycat killing, a mystery that is almost impossible to solve, with a touch of the magic that makes this series so special. What is so wonderful about this story, and series for that matter, is how real and genuine the author makes it. The reader never feels that it is all just a bunch of hocus pocus.

I enjoy this series set in Salem, Mass. I enjoy the characters especially Aunt Ibby. The mystery keeps me entertained and guessing. Lee (the MC) brings in help as needed to solve the mystery.

It’s almost a stretch to call these books witch-themed at this point. It’s mostly a monotonous portrayal of Lee being a reporter and going about her regular reporting job of providing free publicity to Salem attractions. Every once in a while she remembers she has psychic visions and the author throws one in almost as an afterthought. Then there is her strange decision to sub for the main murder suspect’s teaching job by putting on a Clue play. She hardly puts in any actual work towards it, instead giving vague directions to other people who are happy to do all the work for her. Despite its ad-hoc status, it’s also decided the show should be aired on prime time with less than a week between conception and performance. I’d personally be pretty ticked off if I shelled out good money on a history course to instead have the substitute teacher force me to engage with a tenuously-related live action Clue party game. Lee is a very unlikable main character. I really only keep reading these for the Salem setting.

Also, as a librarian, Ibby shouldn’t be casually announcing who checked out what books. Without a court order, that’s a total privacy violation, even in a murder case!

Reading this story is like visiting old friends. The characters are great even the minor ones consistently show up. It's an interesting mystery as it parallels one that happened a hundred of years ago. This time Lee is joined in investigating by her aunt and some friends. Although the reveal of the murder takes place through one of lee's visions the reveal that follows is exciting and interestingly again parallels the previous murder. #MurderTakeTwo #NetGalley

It's been almost 1.5 years since I last checked in with this series and I've gotten plenty of more cosy mysteries under my belt since then.

Maybe that coloured my whole experience of this book, because this series used to be quite a favourite, but this time around - Orion (the cat) was the only real saving grace.

Lee is not a bad main character, but I thought she somehow got too little time and focus in this story. The (too many) side characters leached away at the focus and time the book spent on her and I didn't quite like any of the side characters well enough to find them interesting.

The sassy aunt is supposed to be funny, but I find her mostly mildly annoying, which made the book feel longer than it actually was.

Then we have Pete, the cop boyfriend. He made me do a double-take this time around. In a bad way.
I can't remember him being as stand-offish or dismissive of Lee's abilities/problems before. It really rubbed me the wrong way and I started to dislike him through out the book.
I don't know if the narrator has sort of tired of him too, or what, but she made him sound like a dick.
It meshed badly with Lee constantly telling me, the reader/listener, how Pete is a perfect~✨ boyfriend.

So... Uhm... Yeah. I'm not sure what happened there, but I didn't like it, one bit.

Another thing I didn't remember was Lee constantly referring to her Corvette as "the Vette".
It. Drove. Me. Bloody. Insane.

Like, OK, I know it's a nickname and my hate of it is 100% a "me" problem, but it's used over and over again, and for all the love of all that's unholy and cursed: Why would you constantly call a Corvette a "Vette" and barely ever use the real name for it!?? 💀🔪💣💢

The way it's used is like this cutesie, girly, stupid nickname that belittles the car into something "chic" and "Omg, look at me! I drive this expensive car, but I'm actually sooo relatable!"-ish. Sooooooo annoying! 😝

"Hey, have you seen my new Rarri !? Calling it Ferarri is soooo last year!" 💅
"I don't drive a Volvo! I drive an Olvo !"🙃

(If someone comments about "Merc" being a perfectly acceptable nickname for a Mercedes, I will slap them. Nicknames for something that's actually a first name works so much better, if you ask me.) 🤪

Anyway, I wasn't wowed by this return to Witch City, quite the opposite.
I might give it another chance in the future, but I'm not overly keen after this book. Sorry. 🙈

Lee Barrett is a TV field reporter in Salem, Massachusetts. When college professor, Samuel Bond is murdered in Salem, in a similar vein to a crime that took place almost 200 years before, another academic, assistant professor Cody McGinnis is considered the prime suspect. McGinnis is the nephew of Lee's close friends, twins Roger and Ray Temple, and McGinnis and Bond had been having a disagreement shortly before Bond's killing, so Lee feels obliged to investigate, along with her clairvoyant cat, O’Ryan, and her techie librarian aunt, Ibby.

Murder, Take Two is my first read in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although it is book ten, I was able to keep up with characters and events, but I would have preferred to have started from the first novel for continuity reasons. Protagonist Lee brought her sparkling personality to the proceedings and I also enjoyed the contributions from Aunt Ibby. Her aunt and Ibby’s senior friends really enriched the melting pot, as did the cast from WICH TV, and Salem was effectively its own character, too. Events moved along at a comfortable pace and the mystery itself was great. I had a ball reading this highly amusing and entertaining cozy mystery and I'm already looking forwarding to catching up with Lee in book #11, See Something, as well as grabbing copies of all of books I've missed, though that will take some time! A great choice of cozy if you enjoy a dose of the paranormal.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Salem's WICH-TV field reporter Lee Barrett is eager to help her friends, twins Roger and Ray Temple, prove their nephew Cody McGinnis is innocent in the murder of Professor Samuel Bond. It's not going to be easy, though, because all the evidence points to Cody.

To get things moving, Lee askes her aunt Ibby, who is also her house mate, for help. Ibby calls in friends, Betsy, Louisa, and Mr. Pennington. They all gather and talk thinks over and notice there is a similarity in Bond's death and that of the Nineteenth Century murder of Captain Joseph White. With the help of O'Ryan, Lee's clairvoyant cat, and her own ability to see visions, the group sets out to prove Cody innocent, before the police indict him.

I adore this series. It's one of my favorites, and I have read them all a few times over. I love Lee and her relationship with police detective Pete Mondello. It adds great flavor to the series. And Lee and Ibby are such good friends that I love them, too.

This book had a different flavor than the others, with Lee not really covering the murder, and getting a side job at The Tabby, an arts school.

Ms. Perry expertly weaves a fun tale, full of mystery, history, and board games. The addition of the games added a lot to the story, and provided some intriguing scenes. I love how Ms. Perry paints Salem in this series, and its history.

I highly recommend this series for readers who like mystery with a little paranormal mixed in. I read a digital ARC of this book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.

This is the tenth book in the Witch City Mystery series by Carol J. Perry.

A copy cat murder takes place in Salem and reporter, Lee Barrett is there to cover all the action.

I really liked the story elements that used the old Parker Brother’s board game Clue to help uncover the killer. They also had the assistance of a tv host who was talented with tarot to led their advice which goes perfectly with the witchy Salem vibe. And Aunt Ibby and the other “Angels” were just a hoot too. Everybody had to get into the act to help solve this mystery.

The best part of this is the rich community vibe and the references to the tv shows and board games from the past. I always love when author’s put that kind of stuff into their stories. Just helps us resonate with the people more easily.

This is a series I want to dig more into. Love its vibe and cast. The mystery was pretty complex too and I always enjoy a good cat and mouse chase for a killer.

If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

I'd like to thank the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ecopy of this book in exchange for my review.

This is a cozy mystery book, part of a series, set in Salem Massachusetts. Overall, it's a good cozy, entertaining, without out blood/guts/gore, a little bit of romance and amateur sleuths. This story follows a parallel story line - a murdered college professor closely mirrors a historical murder in the town.

Overall, this was enjoyable, and very much a cozy mystery. The mystery wasn't very detailed or involved, and no big surprise reveal for regular mystery readers. But it was a fun way to pass the time. This is book 10 in the series. I had read the first 3 books in the series, but then skipped to this one, without remembering a lot of the details about the main characters. IT wasn't a problem, though. I think someone could even start with this book and not really be lost in the story line at all. Usually cozy mystery series rely on building the story town, and you can be lost if you skip a few books. I didnt' feel that happened here.

This is one of my favorite series and is consistently well written and entertaining. I am rather sorry that it's moved away from some of the "witchy" aspects of Salem and settled into a somewhat less supernatural groove. (River, the tarot reading "best friend" is reduced to a cameo card reading once a book and no other interaction, it seems; that's just one example.). I am not that wild about Our Heroine's boyfriend Pete Mondello, either, who doesn't like dealing with her ability to see visions. By now he should have adjusted and become more supportive, in my opinion. She could do better in a fella. But I adore the cat O'Ryan, there's a wonderful supporting cast which includes Aunt Ibby and the Tabby, and I like the strong plotting. Despite my griping, I am two behind in reading just because I always want to have at least one more in this series to look forward to. I know I can count on Perry to come through with an entertaining tale.

To start with, I've never even heard about this series but I love this offering and want to read the earlier books for fun and not because they seem vital to enjoying this one. Lee has an interesting past, intriguing friends, and a nose for more than just news. At the request of two of said friends (retired homicide cops who are identical twins) she asks for sleuthing help from some savvy seniors who know how to find out things that law enforcement can't. Seems that there has been a perplexing murder that closely mimics a real historical one from the area and the chief suspect is nephew to the men who asked for assistance. Excellent cozy with some really fun touches. Loved it!

2020 bk 285. Tenth in the series, these are not examples of 'high' literature, but rather are great fun on a rainy day or a day too hot to leave the house (and you don't want to do housework). Our heroine and her group of 'Angels' are called in to aid the nephew of Lee's (heroine) former students. The young man has been arrested for a murder that replicates that a murder that took place almost 200 years ago. It is with the help of her cat, her part time job at the Libby (fine arts school), full time job at the TV station, the Angels, and the game of Clue that everything comes together and the real murderer is arrested.

From Amazon: "When a copycat killer has reporter Lee Barrett brushing up on ancient history, it’s a test where failure could be lethal . . .

I've read the previous books in the series and as far as I remember I enjoyed them, but for some reason I wasn't thrilled with this one. In fact I even figured out "who done it" as soon as the person was introduced.

Usually there is more paranormal activity in the stories which I look forward to... but reading this was Blah, blah, blah, blah for me.

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of MURDER, TAKE TWO (Book 10 of the Witch City Mysteries) by Carol J. Perry in exchange for an honest review. Lee Barrett is settling into her position as an investigative reporter and is in fierce competition with her co-worker. Lee’s current investigation is into the murder of a local professor, which mimics an infamous historic slaying. Assistant Professor Cody McGinnis, the prime suspect, has connections who approach Lee, her Aunt Ibby, and their group of curious friends and ask them to find the real killer. Lee still dreads the visions she gets, but her communications with O’Ryan are becoming clearer. With persistence, her investigative training, the research skills of her aunt and friends, and the unusual insights of her pet cat, Lee will do her best to scoop the copycat killer.

I enjoyed this book and like the series. I recommend this book to fans of the series. I recommend the series to fans of Carol J. Perry and to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, storied cities, reporting, teaching, television, psychic abilities, and helpfully communicative cats.

Although I enjoyed the previous books in the series, I had trouble getting into this one. There is no major relationship or character development, and although Aunt Ibby is still seeing Mr Pennington from the Tabby, she also takes on a new male friend.

Ray and Roger, former students of Lee's, return to town in order to help their favourite nephew, Cody, who is being accused of murdering a history professor. He asks Lee and her aunt to help, and Aunt Ibby invites a couple of friends to assist them. The new mystery solving trio throw themselves into the task and call themselves the Angels. (to Mr Pennington's Charlie).

In my opinion, not a captivating mystery. It didn't grab me from the first chapter and maintained the dull pace to the end.

I love Salem at Halloween and that's how I got interested in this series.

When one of the teacher's is accused of murder Lee must get involved and investigate with her cat O'Ryan and her boyfriend from the police department.

She is working at a local tv station and covers it for them while drawing attention from the killer. O'Ryan helps keep Lee safe. And if you are into board games there is one that is brought to life in this book.

If you like mysteries and Salem MA is the place for them, you will love this series. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Slow starter

I love the Witch City myateries but this one left me disappointed. Not the usual amount of hijinks or actual snooping that always causes Lee to get into so much trouble. This one left me wanting. ORyan was great as usual.
