The Heir of Logres

Rate this book
Camelot is falling. Can she save it?

Blanche braved the perilous realm of Logres. She survived Morgan le Fay’s assassins. She saved the Holy Grail from desecration.
Now she’s all set to face the court of Camelot and claim her rightful place as Blanchefleur, King Arthur’s daughter and the heir of Logres.

Until disaster strikes. Queen Guinevere is accused of adultery, throwing Blanche’s parentage into doubt...and plunging the kingdom into a civil war which could destroy everything she has come to love.

As the Round Table splinters, young Sir Perceval is torn between Sir Gawain, the father he idolises and Blanche, the lady he loves. Justice demands he take a side and fight against his swordbrothers. Will Gawain ever forgive him...or will Perceval have to fight his father, too?

When they learn that a single shadowy figure has been steering Logres toward destruction, Blanche and Perceval have just one chance to save Arthur’s kingdom. But as they try to unearth their enemy, courtiers and knights whisper the deepest, darkest secret of all.

Even if Camelot could be saved, is Blanche the one to do it?

Or is someone else the Pendragon’s heir?

Thankfully this had a more satisfying conclusion than The Quest for Carbonek. I was a bit worried about how the author would manage to resolve conflict and produce a non-dismal ending. The last chapter is more hopeful than I expected, and the characters are more optimistic than I thought possible (maybe I forgot we were dealing with Perceval...?)

Most of what I'd like to say about this book would be nothing but repeats of my reviews for numbers one and two. I will say that I liked the plot twist: I'd been wondering whether a certain illustrious character would reappear, but that particular possibility didn't enter my mind until it was forcibly pounded through my skull (sorry, a ridiculous word picture but I can't think of any other way to describe it).

Now I can in good conscience start The Watchers of Outremer series!

Heir of Logres provided a beautiful and suitably epic ending for Suzannah Rowntree's retelling of the Arthurian Legends 'The Pendragon's Heir'. It comes with generous helpings of romance, twists and turns, and some unexpected allies.

Its Camelot, but perhaps not quite as we would know it: Mordred, Lancelot, Percival and Morgan le Fey are here, but their roles and personalities might not quite be what we have come to expect. Above all I think Heir of Logres was a story about new beginnings, second chances and redemption. One of my favourite quotes was:

“Tell us not to burn down a house before a better can be built. Tell us not to despise the day of small beginnings, or consider ourselves less fallible than our fathers.”
Modern people too often have the tendency to think we are better and superior than those who came before, and that we can build a perfect world by sweeping away the imperfect. How wrong we have been.

So really, I would conclude that this novel, and the Trilogy it concludes is an Arthurian retelling which has important resonances and carries lessons for a modern audience. The author has done a fabulous job of retelling the Medieval source material. Well and truly recommended.

Gritty, Heart wrenching, ....and Hopeful.
This was a nice twist on the Legend of King Arthur with some really great messages interwoven throughout the series.
There are two POVs that consist of Blanchefluer and Sir Percival which was enjoyable -from someone who likes multi-POVs-. The language is unique in it's Old English way and makes you feel like you're really in the world of King Arthur and his Knights. The main characters as well as the secondary characters were well done and understandably relatable in there struggles and doubts. You can even feel some pity for Lancelot -not to say I didn't want to thrash him at some points, but his struggles are understandable-....and Gwenivere was actually pretty likable.
...but Gawain though..*cries*

Clean Rating (I often forget to put this on my reviews, but better late then never, right?)
*laughs awkwardly*
4.5/5 for gory violence -there's a whole lotta battling going on so there's some decapitations, animals killed in battle*cries again* and quite a bit of death in general. Other than that, the romance is very light and brief (I think there was like maybe 3 kissing scenes-more like moments- in the entire series put together) and no language that I recall.
P.S. - My theory was correct about Mr. Corbin!*laughs maniacally*

Alas! The last!

This book was, for me, deeply satisfying. I cut my teeth on Le Morte D'Arthur, and loved the contrast of the heroine's initially selfish outlook and her maturing into someone with deeply held ideals. Oh, yeah, and KNIGHTS. Not to mention, magic. Perfect.

Wow! I liked book one. Book two was okay. Book three? Loved it! Phenomenal wrapping up of the series! Action, mystery and intrigue, romance, and just enough left unsaid to keep you thinking about the characters once the book is done.

This book was somewhat better than the last, a little less like a novel you have to decipher for English homework.

Excellent conclusion

This was an excellent conclusion to the series. I lied how believable the story was and how it gave a wonderful and still realistic conclusion to the book.
