Wow!

Wow! One of the best series I've ever read. Had to go to Google maps to familiarize myself with the area. Gonna miss Alex Fletcher.

I picked this bundle up for several reasons, but what initially got me interested was the 50 hours it promised. I listen anywhere from 12 to 32 a week while working, with an average of 20 hours on a regular basis. So bundles are worth my money and even if the books are so-so it still helps to pass the time. The bonus with this bundle is that it is amazingly captivating, some books more than others. I am not usually into conspiracy theory books, and I have to have some supernatural or sci-fi aspect to my military action media in order to have it keep my interest. What pulled me to this series over others was in large part to the MC, Alex Fletcher, being a United States Marine, an Iraq War veteran, and that he is a family man protecting his family. Before I could even purchase the bundle I could relate to Alex as I am also both an Iraq War veteran and a father. It also helps that the story takes place in New England; a place I call home. Steven Konkoly Does an amazing job at the accuracy of what he writes, not just with military terminology and weaponry, but also with how a military trained mind works. Steven Konkoly, as a veteran himself, really knows how the military mind works, to the point that it brought out my combat perception flared giving me momentary anxiety at times. Not many books have been able to make my heart race like this. Konkoly also writes very believable and imperfect characters, which is perfect in itself. I have become a fan and will likely listen to more of Steven Konkoly's books.

That being said, the books are not entirely without fault. Books 1-3 were great. Even the first half of book 4 was good, and the second half just feels rushed and frustrating when you just want the bad guy taken out. Book 5 is mostly skippable. The first part of the book is just a number of 5-10 minute short stories about what is going on in the world outside of the perspective of the Fletcher's, which all felt rather disjointed and confusing. The second part of the book is more like a side story that happens months after the events in the last book. Where the second part of the book is exciting, it doesn't feel like much changes overall other than that now the Fletcher's and friends are better equipped to survive. Then it ends... again.

Book 1 - The Jakarta Pandemic - Story/Audio: 4/2 stars - Amazing story, only marred by poor narration and editing
The series starts with major cities around the world enduring a highly lethal virus. The story follows Alex Fletcher, who sees signs of chaos and prepares his family and home for the worse. Alex prepares his home for a safe and secluded stay. However, there are some things he missed, which mostly involves the human condition. As the H16N1 virus spreads throughout the United States, society begins to fall apart while those not too sick fight for survival by any means necessary. Even at the cost of others lives. This book explores how viruses may spread through students at school who bring them home to family, supplies being depleted like empty grocery stores and fuel stations empty, hospitals having to start turning people away due to being to full. Alex starts to see his neighborhood come together, which is the start of it falling apart as the H16N1 virus turns fiends into carriers, and eventually enemies.
This book had me in anxiety as I listened on to Alex overcoming obstacle after obstacle to keep his family safe. We see Alex go into what military veterans call "combat perception", a constant threat assessment that changes moment by moment based on the changing situation. Some of my favorite parts include: interactions with Alex's gun-nut neighbor Charlie, Alex interacting with his family, especially with his son... The only issue I had with this book was with the choice of narrator, some audio issues, and the dragging beginning chapters. John David Farrell would not have been my first or second choice for the narration of this series. Farrell knows what he is doing when it comes to the male characters and makes each sound distinct. However, Farrell does not do female characters any justice here, which alls sound the same bland. Eventually you get used to it but that's not really a good thing, I would have preferred someone like Ray Porter (Threshold series). As for the audio, there are some poorly edited parts where Farrell's voice changes pitch, volume, or pace and sometimes its mid sentence; an issue that can really take you out of the moment. not Farrell's fault, just poor editing. The beginning of the book had me worried as it was very slow to get to the thrill of this thriller. For example, chapter 4, where short is just about Alex taking inventory of the family bunker in the basement.

Book 2 - The Perseid Collapse - Story/Audio: 5/3 stars - Years later, Alex continues to protect his family in another national threat. Editing has been perfected, and narration improves. As if the first book wasn't enough to convince me, book two really made me think about the lengths i would go to protect my own family. I believe this book takes place 6 years after the Jakarta pandemic (book 1). The United States is attacked by an unknown enemy but the nation is better prepared for another national emergency. At least that is what everyone thinks. Chaos and violence are still the only way some people can find a way to get by. Ryan Fletcher has just started college in Boston, MA when the attack happens. Alex is set on rescuing his son from the city but also has to protect his family in Maine. Alex devises a plan to get his wife, daughter, and even some friends to safety while he heads south to Boston to save his son. The journey is brutal and hostile as the landscape has been changed due to the effects of the attack. It doesn't help that the local militia has less then noble plans for the people of Maine and anyone trying to come and leave the state. Alex brings some friend from the first book to help save his son Ryan and one of those friends daughter. Some of my favorite parts included the tactical teamwork of the trio and that of the families headed to safety, ALex learning even with all his experience and research, and Alex meeting up with an old buddy in Boston. The editing has been vastly improved. While I still feel John David Farrell was not the best fit for a narrator in this series, he does show improvement in his craft.

Book 3 - Event Horizon - Story/Audio: 5/4 stars - Alex now has to escape a ruthless Boston city and his rescue mission seems impossible to accomplish alive. Not only is the local militia after him, but Alex may not be able to trust any locals. Alex has some tough decisions in this one, which is saying something. Maine is not much better but thankfully doesn't resemble a city at war. This book broadened some issues happening that does not directly effect our story of the Fletcher's. This book gave a feeling of other potentially interesting stories not directly involving the Fletchers and friends. An odd thing that Konkoly did was fit the tail end of the story arc from book two and finished it in this book. I liked it at first but when I thought about it I felt like book two was intentionally unfinished. As this is a bundle though, I still didn't mind. Farrell does a better job here and the editing is now top notch.

Book 4 - Point of Crisis - Story/Audio: 5/3 stars - The fight continues in Main as the government tries to stabilize the state. However, the local militia is trying its hardest to throw a wrench into any progress, while still trying to take out the Fletcher Family. The very ending is an exciting conclusion but feels a little sudden and leaves more questions as to what comes next. Steven Konkoly even mentions in book 5 that he planned this book to be the last we heard of the family. Narration falls short again, especially near the end of the audiobook, and there were some editing issues here too.

Book 5 - Dispatches - Story/Audio: 3/3 stars - As I explained above, the first part is a number of short stories, while the second part is an exciting but short lived side story taking place months after the events of book 4; even the ending felt off. I found myself skipping some of the short stories just to get to the Fletcher portion of the book. Probably would have been better as two seperate books with some more fleshing out of each. Narration was pretty bad in the first part due to very bad accents, while being average in the second part. This 5th book can pretty much be skipped all together with little implication.

Audible audio.

An apocalyptic tale of the combinations of a meteor blasting into the ocean off New England, the resulting tsunami, an EMP that disrupts the entire country, and the aggressive behavior of China and their missiles. Throw into the mix a bunch of preppers, local militants, jack-booted thugs, and state militias. All this takes place over what appears to be only a year. So, stretch your imagination a bit to believe ALL of this would happen in so short a timeframe ... but hey, it's a Sci-Fi, so .....

The hero, Alex, is a former special-ops bad-ass. He and his family and circle of friends traverse the pages of the story, getting in and out of scrapes and battling the evils among them. The biggest criticism is that I'd rather Alex was more of a reluctant hero - he seems to enjoy the prepper world. In 50 hours of listening, practically no empathic views of what would be enormous suffering and loss by millions and millions of people. Significant descriptions of military hardware, guns, and miscellaneous big-boy toys, though - shooting fellow Americans turned into starving refugees. Many every-man-for-himself situations.

No explicit language was inappropriate to the scenes, no sex, nothing objectionable. Narration a bit slow for my taste, so bumped it up to 1.4 on the Audible app. Long listen, close to 50 hours.

Okay for the prepper in you. A bit campy.

I really don’t understand all the high ratings for this set.
It was not good AT ALL! Very disappointing!
Not believable at all, terrible dialogue, especially the confrontations with the “bad guys” where you just expect a little more...? Something

The Jakarta Pandemic took the world by the scruff and shook it vigorously. The Perseid Collapse begins with bang and just keeps coming.

In these days, in the midst of Covid-19, the Jakarta Pandemic reads a little more like history than fiction. Our whole world is now filled with "Social Distancing", masks, shelter in place, stay at home, and fear. Lies and misdirection are spoon fed to a clueless public, ready to believe anything that helps them sleep at night. Alex and friends survived the Pandemic and I pray that we will too.
This series of Alex Fletcher and his family and friends, tells the tale of one group's struggles to survive starvation and mayhem on the streets and backyards of the USA. Are their problems an attack by a foreign power? Or a false flag operation of our own government? Whatever and whichever the start, the results are disorder, panic and death. Can Alex and friends assist their country to survive predators in their own backyards, and foreign powers chomping at the bit to grab off a big chunk of real estate and make it their own?
The Alex Fletcher Boxset is a great read. Chomp on some!

I loved all 1,200+ pages. First, the good.

I finished reading the Jakarta Pandemic just as the China virus hit the US. Talk about coincidence. I quickly got addicted to Steven’s great characterization and fast pace. I felt like the Fletchers and their neighbors were my friends. Sure, Alex is a fictitious protagonist and hero. But he was believable most of the time. The story line through all of the books was riveting and I couldn’t wait for my nightly reading time to see what happened next.

The not so good...
As other reviewers noted, I had a hard time following the geography and directions. Without a map, I had to actively create a visual map in my mind of where things were. Sometimes I just ignored all of those unnecessary details as they didn’t affect the story.

Steven’s background in the military adds to the book. He knows his weapons and military procedures.

In summary, I loved this box set and will continue to read Steven Konkoly’s other books. He’s an amazing writer. Thanks, Steven, for sharing your gift with your readers.

Exciting story

Overall story is very entertaining and exciting. The boxed set 5 pack book is nice to follow the series. There seemed a few overall main backstory plot holes in books 2-5, that i kind of wish were not left outstanding as it kind of left unresolved that slightly left you unsatisfied, but the main overalls story was very well written and compelling. Nice characters and exciting action kept me on the edge of my seat for much of the story. Great read

Out of my usual element

This series was outside of my usual reads, but I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I only wish Mr. Konkoly had put a little more at the end as far as how Alex Fletcher and his group got themselves set back up. If you're a fan of action, post apocalyptic, or even dystopian novels, I'd recommend this series.

This was a very interesting read. At first I thought it was someone trying to cash in on the recent pandemic, and then I realized it was written well before. It was eerily similar to how so many things have played out over the last few years.

I'm just glad I listened to this after the entire series was already completed. Even though the first book was stand alone and the fifth book was too for the most part, the three in the middle should be seen as a single big book.

The series as a whole is great.

Action packed adventure leavened with disturbing stereotypes

This series says a lot of good things about individuality, strikes a very sour note with lightly veiled slams at urban folk, liberals and minorities. The prepper theme is less radical than some, but still strongly biased against cooperative publicly led problem solving. All politicians are not corrupt or short sighted, nor are all individualists pure and brilliant. Lots of propaganda here.

Action packed

It was so hard to put this collection down. Non-stop action. So descriptive that it feels like you are right there in the middle of the action. The reader gets to hear the thoughts of characters from all angles of an issue. Very intense reading. The subject matter is realistic enough to happen today. I do not recommend reading this series at bedtime, or you will be dreaming about combat.

Better Than The Walking Dead

Alex Fletcher and crew are heroes. Why? They are ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. Willing to fight the good fight for family, friends and what is right. Action filled. I read this in the car while on family vacation. A week of reading because I was hooked on what was next.
Puts in perspective a lot of the things we take for granted.

Excellent read!

This actually my second time reading through this 5 book set! I thought I had left a review the first time! Excellent writing in the combat scenes! I enjoyed reading it again. The overall tone of the series is very believable, which is an unfortunate reflection on the state of the country, and of the world.

Books 1-5

These are good books. I found myself reading every chance I got. Some things happening in the books I could see really coming true. Like the order to disarm all citizens. If ever a time comes when the average citizen needs to protect his self, an EMP would be one. Also, I could see some Governors taking over Federal jurisdictions in their state.

Series started out strong and thoroughly enjoyed the characters; however, by the time I was on the last two books, I found the detail of the military description and character development more lacking and would end up skimming through pages. Overall still a good read, but not one that kept me reading into the wee hours like others.

This is, in reality, one long novel. I had a hard time putting it down. Some peripheral characters come and go and some are woven into the story line. This kind of makes you want to read on as these characters are developed to see if they become part of the main story or disappear. This is a very good read.

Great book series

Very entertaining, but maybe a little too real especially after 2020. All the characters are well developed and likable. I enjoyed all 5 books in this series, felt like I finished too soon. I am a Vietnam War vet and I wholeheartedly recommend reading this series.

First book hard to read as too damn close to our 2020 reality. But after that pace picked up and great storyline emerged. Certainly gives you pause for thought.

Quite well done. At first I thought it was a little bland and the Jakarta flu was the authors version of Covid, but then I checked the publication date and realised it was written way before Covid hit. That alone makes the plot a lot easier to imagine/comprehend.

Ok

Unrealistic view toward use of deadly force. I the author has mitary experience but writes like a "woke" liberal. In a disaster like a pandemic as described in this book ...bad guy shows up ,bad guy threatens wife and children.....bad guy dies.
