Difficult parents and lost children, unfaithful spouses and spectral lovers, mysterious ancestors and fierce bloodlines — the stories, poems, and memoirs in this new anthology tackle everything that’s most complicated and thrilling about family and history in the Caribbean. Collecting new writing by finalists for the Hollick Arvon Caribbean Writers Prize, a groundbreaking award administered by the Bocas Lit Fest, Thicker Than Water shows us how a new generation of Caribbean authors address perennial questions of love, betrayal, and memory in small places where personal and collective histories are often troublingly intertwined.
"Thicker Than Water" is a collection of memoirs, essays, stories and poems by Caribbean Writers. Some of the writers in this collection I was already familiar with, others I was excited to hear from.
The collection is edited by Funso Aiyejina and she did an amazing job of curating this strong, refreshing look into Caribbean Life. While I am not a big fan of poetry, I did enjoy the Poets and their poems that were featured. This collection is a great nod to the Caribbean culture, lifestyle and vibrant lives Caribbean people live. A lot of different topics are covered in this collection, overall writing is tight, poignant and lively.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this collection, I do have a few stand outs: Sophia's New Shoes by Lelawatee Manoo-Rahming Lettuce by Sharon Millar Goal by Barbara Jenkins G&Ts And Rita Bloody Marley by Lisa Allen-Agostini One The Edges Of History by Judy Raymond The Island Of My Life by Diana McCaulay The Wayward Son by Vashti Bowlah
Poetry "The Young Indian Witch Learns How To Pray" by Shivanee Ramlochan "When You Eat A Mango" by Peta-Gaye V Williams
If you are looking for a solid collection of stories, poems, essays and memoirs that authentically captures Caribbean life, I highly recommend you reading this book.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed with this collection. Although it did feature some top-notch Caribbean writers, I felt that some of the stories fell flat or were not related to the title, Thicker Than Water.
In spite of this, I enjoyed the following: 1. Sophia's New Shoes by Lelawatee Manoo-Rahming 2. G&Ts and Rita Bloody Marley by Lisa Allen-Agostini 3. Three Poems by Shivanee Ramlochan 4. Lettuce by Sharon Millar
