Renee is a younger female Harry Bosch, first in the series so I was happy to find it at the local little sharing library box on my street. I have read some others where they team up. I expected a different maybe too obvious, bad cop but I enjoyed it, a quick, easy read

Another cop solving the crimes of California. Good story line, and well written, as ever, but I didn't find the main character as engaging as Harry Bosch. Thought the ending was slightly unbelievable, and I don't mean the crime story. I will definitely read the next in the series.

This was a charcoal sketch of a book. Mostly contrast, no pretty details. I liked the story, read it until the end and was disappointed. I'll read the next if this becomes a series just in case Michael Connolly comes back.

Connolly's writing is clean and direct and his books are a pleasure to read. He doesn't rely on impossible or unlikely devices to get his characters into or out of trouble. He allows the reader to use their own logic along with the characters as he develops the plot.

Ik heb nog niet eerder kennisgemaakt met de boeken van Michael Connelly.
De Nachtploeg is een standalone met een nieuw personage: Renée Ballard, rechercheur bij de politie (LAPD) van Los Angeles, bureau Hollywood.
De titel van het boek verwijst naar de nachtdiensten die Ballard draait met haar collega Jenkins
Het boek begint direct met drie door elkaar heen lopende zaken en een kennismaking met nogal wat personages. Er wordt naar mijn mening te erg uitgewijd over zaken waardoor ik het spoor soms even bijster ben. De echte spanning mis ik.
Je leert Ballard kennen als een pitbull die zich enorm vastbijt in wat ze voor ogen heeft. Ze zet haar tanden in twee misdaden waar ze niet alleen tijdens haar dienst maar ook overdag al haar energie insteekt. Ze ligt geregeld overhoop met haar superieuren en haar collega’s. Een personage waar ik al snel echt dol op was.
Tussen alle drukte door zoekt Ballard haar rust op op het strand. Daar zet ze haar tentje op en gaat ze met haar surfplank de branding in.
Haar hond Lola wijkt daar niet van haar zijde.
De eerste helft van het boek moest ik wennen aan alle personages en miste ik de heuse spanning maar het las wel lekker door. De tweede helft van het boek is echt verrassend en erg spannend. Het zogenaamde WTF-moment heb ik twee keer ervaren en dat maakte het voor mij uiteindelijk een echte pageturner met een geweldig plot.
Ik kijk al uit naar een vervolg van Michael Connolly met Renée Ballard als hoofdpersonage.
Ik kan dit boek elke thrillerliefhebber aanraden.

Renee Ballard is a smart cop who has had to deal with an unsavory boss and a partner who chose to advance his career rather than have her back. She's smart, she's tough and she has a great dog.
Good story although the ending was a bit abrupt. I'll definitely look for this character to develop.

Michael Connolly has added another character and it looks like it will become another series. The storyline kept me enthralled and everything was tied up neatly in the end. A lot of characters were introduced which I assume with have recurring roles in the future books.

Another fine series to dive into, it's just super and Renee Ballard is a smart, savvy, cool chick who has what it takes to solve crimes. I'm on book two now, "Dark Sacred Night," which features Bosche, and it's great too!

Great police procedural. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope Connelly writes more Renée Ballard centered novels.

Enjoyed. Bosch and his informal partner worked in a realistic relationship with a good plot and strong characters
