Some people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.

Many submissions and rejections followed.

In 1998, she sold to a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.

In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. She went on to write 21 novels and novellas in that series, then wrote three other series for Kensington before moving to St. Martin's Press.

She has two series with SMP--The Intimate Relations series complete with three novels and one novella of romantic suspense set in California's wine country, and an erotic paranormal series, Feral Passions, set in California's Trinity Alps.

She is also continuing her Spirit Wild series, the sequel to Wolf Tales, independently.

Kate and her husband of over forty-five years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.

CAMILLE'S DAWN----
He is at his wits ends. He just does not have the strength to live any more. Ulrich Mason has a hole in his soul without Camille. Just one more night he wishes.

Tia wishes she could just remember a little something about her mother. But all the memories are gone-Camille's smell, her touch, her laughs anything that would remind you of someone. She doesn't know why she cannot remember.

Luc, poor soul, he has beaten himself down so hard for the tragedy that he caused the whole family since the shooting. He has tried and tried for years to give his heart, mind & soul to Tia and Ulrich for what he did, which at the time, Luc did not know Camille was a shapeshifter.

The other pack in Montana-Anton, Stefan, Xandi and Keisha have a problem of their own. Keisha is being sought after by Camille's spirit. Camille is caught between the plane of the living and going to eternity. Keisha is also pregnant and Camille is everywhere Keisha goes.

Anton just needs to get Camille to go where she needs to go so Keisha can stop worrying for the baby's sake. So, he figures since it will be Halloween, he would call the pack of Ulrich and try to call Camille's spirit to find out why she's not moved on.

From the point of the set-up of the calling through to the end, I cried and cried. Was so loving and moving I could not literally put the book down. You will not either. Just to let you know, I've not read the other 2 stories in the novella but as soon as I finish the series, I will.

This collection had three stories: Camille's Dawn, by Kate Douglas; Midnight Man, by Sharon Page; and Night Pleasures, by Kathleen Dante.

I didn't actually read Douglas' story because I really kind of hate the Chanku universe. I started, got a few pages, and just skipped it entirely as it was as ridiculous as I remember.

Page's story was the best here, never mind the fact that it managed to accomplish a thing that I've never experienced before: I thought the vampire was sexy. And I don't do sexy vampires. I mean, they do nothing for me. The story wasn't too bad, the sex was UHMAZING (and a bit kinkier than a lot of mainstream erotica will get), but she got a little heavy-handed with the You Have To Fall In Love With The Vampire In Two Days thing. I know this is technically erotic romance, but come on.

Dante's effort was somewhere in the middle. There was a lot more action than in the other(s), but the excessive use of modifiers and the frankly absurd language ("...chafed her joy spot with assiduous attention" - I'm sorry, what? That is *not* sexy) brought it down a few notches for me.

All in all, it was 300 pages of meh.

"Camille's Dawn"
Kate Douglas

Kate Douglas takes us deeper into the world of the Chanku. A species of shapeshifters from the wind blown steppes of Tibet. An erotic, sensual breed of wolf and man. Choosing one mate for life, through the mating, they truly become one flesh. All memories, special talents, their very souls merge during the mating. The loss of a mate literally tears their very soul in half. The pain is excruciating and survival is not always successful.

He sits alone in his apartment, an empty brandy bottle in front of him, a loaded pistol in his hand. For twenty years his anger festered. He still was unable to forgive her for the her recklessness, her love of freedom that lead to her death. Yet, he still loved her.
Missed the sparkle of mischief in her eyes, her laughter, and those wonderful, wild nights of loving. He became erect at the memories, tears on his face, the anguish in his heart as fresh as the day she was taken from him.

A spirit trapped in the void beyond the veil of death, unable to move on to find rest. Held for so long in this place without color, no sound. Floating with no sense of anything living or dead. Her only hope for peace in death is a extremely powerful wizard. Is he strong enough to penetrate the veil of death ? Will he be able to free her, to find peace in death at last ? Is his magical power strong enough to free a man from years of anguish, free a killer from the burden of guilt and finally free a little girl from her feelings of abandonment.

Will the power of the Chanku love for their mate bring forgiveness ?

❤❤❤

These three stories are very erotic, explicit and overflowing with sex. I hate to say they are simply cheap thrills because for the most part there is quality writing and decent stories, but they are very much geared toward lady porn. I'm not exactly complaining, but in the end it was only mediocre reading.

Camille’s Dawn by Kate Douglas

❤❤❤ (but contains/implies some really iffy aspects)

Going into this story I knew nothing about Kate Douglas and her Wolf Tales series. A series about the Chanku who are wolf to human shapeshifters. In book #1 you meet Xandi (Alexandria), Stefan, Anton Cheval and Keisha and apparently the quartet get to know each other very, very well and often. Had I known that little gem I wouldn't have been so surprised by the first 6 pages of this story when mated couple, Tia and Luc are engaged in some amorous activity and suddenly from behind Tia, pops Tinker, another packmate who is also in love with Tia, and is pleasuring her in that moment. Whoa'kay. So after that eye popping scene Tia gets to the plot and tells the reader that she wishes he father, Ulrich, widower since Tia was 6, had a soul mate too. The couple receives a call from Anton Cheval (Montana's uber-alpha and like some wizardy, ancient shifter) who says Ulrich's deceased wife Camille, (killed by Luc actually) has been haunting his mate and he has a plan to help Camille cross into wherever it is she needs to go. When Luc, Tia (H/h of book #2) and her dad Ulrich arrive to Anton's home (via San Fran), Keisha, Xandi and Stefan are there with some spolier type news, so probably a nice surprise to fans of the series. Anyway, what happens from there is they send 60 year old Ulrich into the realm where a 38 year old Camille waits. They reconnect, a lot and Ulrich has to decide if missing her is enough to stay with her, or if he should return home with Tia and the future and wait out the rest of his time on earth. This short story made me want to read more about the Chanku but partner sharing (m/m, f/f, m/m/f/f, etc.) and intermittent sex between wolf and human made me think twice. Still since I love shifters and haven't shied away from anything yet I'll probably seek them out one day.

Midnight Man by Sharon Page

❤❤❤ (I've never read so much sex in 128 pages)

Michael is Varkrye, a subspecies of vampire, who retain similar traits like aversion to the sun, sleeping during the day, sharp fangs and a hunger for human blood. But unlike vampires, Varkryes are not immortal, they require human blood directly from the source and they have a chance to redeem their lost soul. But that chance comes in the form of a curse. Varkrye's live for 200 years, maximum. In that span, if they find true love, the curse is broken. Specifically, for the curse to be broken, Varkrye and their respective soul mate have to be making love together, the most erotic way possible and each must declare their love during climax. But only true love can break the curse. There is a dire consequence if one professes love that isn't true. Michael has 3 days before the full moon on his 200th year (221 technically if you count his human years) and he believes Erin is his soul mate. He knows she won't fall easily into love because of her past but he plans to copulate her into submission. Or at least copulate her brains out for his remaining days. They'd use a much more erotic word for what takes place for probably 95% of this story (nearly all 128 pages), but you get the idea. And if you don't, then read this because the point Micheal wants to make is relentless and done in many different ways, in different rooms, etc. There were two moments when I screamed "EWW!" and most of the rest of the time I was just thinking "Goddess, how much sex can these people have?" The story was good, I suppose. The sex (I can't believe I'm saying this) got to be a bit tedious, not for lack of variation, just the copious amount.

description

Night Pleasures – Kathleen Dante

3 (but the self pleasuring scene at the end was too much)

So, the first thing I noticed about this story is that the author is a great writer. Sentences overflowed with vivid details and dynamic language. I don't think I've ever dog eared (for shame) so many pages containing words I didn't know...at least not so many in a short story. The story goes a little something like this. Alana is on the run from her ex Bryce. Literally. She's running through the woods, half naked, toward the Pleasure Quarter after simulacra (the conjured dead) destroyed her cottage then gave chase. Bryce, an earth magician, has turned to necromancy and conjured the simulacra to steal Alana's, grandfather's brooch. A brooch that enhances Alana's wood magician power and could be used to conjure her grandfather and steal his power or direct Bryce to some mysterious treasure. I wasn't too sure. In the Pleasure Quarter it's Samhain night and basically anything goes. The naughtier the more likely. Alana ends up on stage doing a striptease, in an effort to evade the simulacra naturally. In the audience sits her jeweler neighbor Colin, who can't believe his eyes when the little florist he's lusted after for months is dancing for him. He knew she'd a lover these past months and he's not one to poach. But as of about 20 minutes ago when, Bryce blew up her house, Alana became single. So, Colin decides that he's going to finally take what's being offered. Then he realizes Alana is also in danger. Colin can help and he decides, in between sexing her, that he will. He's a fire magician and that power has with one minor drawback. Every time he uses his power he weakens, BUT a women's pleasure recharges him. Convenient.

Camille’s Dawn – Kate Douglas
A restless, sensual spirit, held captive by one who binds her with both love and hate, Camille yearns for freedom beyond the earthly plane. Her only hope lies in the supernatural powers of an extraordinary shapshifter, the unquenchable desire of her one true love and a magical night of impossible passion...

With this story I caught a glimpse of the Chanku World, a world of shape-shifting wolves, created by Kate Douglas.
It is part of a series, Wolf Tales, but even without reading the previous books you get a good view of this fascinating world.
If you don’t mind the graphic and numerous erotic scenes, including a threesome, in the merely 74 pages you encounter a enthralling story of undying love between alpha-males and their mates. It’s a beautiful story about Camille, a spirit trapped on the earthly plane, unable to move on to the peace of the spiritual realm. In order for her to move on a Chanku wizard perform a ritual involving Camille’s husband Ulrich, her daughter Tia and Luc(ien), the Chanku who killed her in the line of duty.
Camille is kept on the earthly plane by her daughter’s grief and feelings of abandonment, her husband’s anger and resentment and Luc’s feelings of guilt over killing her.
A story of love, redemption, forgiving, grief and sensuality.
As known with antologies, it’s too short for depth but it came very close and I expect the full-length books to have lots more potential with both the characters and the storylines.

3 stars

Midnight Man – Sharon Page
He’s a six-foot four inches of maile perfection. Glorious, gorgeous, and blessed with a body and sensuous lips promising wave after wave of ecstasy, Michael Rourke is a Varkyre – the most damned species of vampire. When he wants a woman, she is his. And the woman he wants is Erin Kennedy, a mortal who does not yet know the real meaning of pleasure...

This story holds a promise, a promise of more to come. Sharon Page has a style of writing that pulls you in and fascinates, despite – or maybe because – of the very explicit erotic scenes. If you’re in the mood for some hot and very explicit stuff, Page will deliver. This is the story of a vampire with superhuman strength and his feisty human soul mate who is his only way to regain his soul and live as a mortal. She can free his soul with her unconditional love but she’s is also the one who can condemn him to a torturous and horrible death.
It’s really too bad this was an anthology because some parts were just plain incredible but that was because the story was too short to get into the explaining of things. For example you don’t get the whole story on how the two of them meet and start their relationship. With depth and more characterisation it would have made an nice full-length with many possibilities.
It contains lots of s.e.x but along the story it is not the s.e.x but the developement of their relationship, his salvation and her trust that become the focus of it.

3,5 stars

Night Pleasures – Kathleen Dante
Alana MacArdy possesses a magical and rare power – and a sizzling s.e.xuality. She comes to Pleasure Quarter to escape from an evil necromancer, but what she finds is Colin Sheridan, a former soldier with fire magic. Together they’ll succumb to immortal desire...and reach heights they never would have imagined...

A story with possibilities but for me Kathleen Dante didn’t quite manage to keep me into the story. It wasn’t until the end that I started to like it and the erotic scenes were bothersome interruptions in stead of being additions to it. The story never reaches it’s intended potential because there are to many things that bothered me. For example in the middle of a fighting scene with “zombies” the heroin starts to masturbate to give the hero strength to fight. This was a bit too much for me. Too incredible and farfetched. The characters were just flat, you don’t really get to know what drives them, they just have a lot of s.e.x. on moments where I think: stop fooling around and go kick some ass!
Of the three stories it was the one that lacked the most depth and it could not hold my attention.
This was too bad because the plot itself was quite original and could have been worked out so much better.

====

My overall judgement is that where “normal” anthologies aren’t a big hit in my book due to lack of depth, this erotic anthology (and maybe others too) is even worse because there you also have the numerous erotic scenes that, when not a functional addition to the story, are just really annoying and a waist of pages. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind erotic scenes and I like my books to be steamy but when you only have between 74 and 120 pages for a story, it leaves very little room for an intriguing story that touches your emotions. In my opinion the author that did this best in this anthology was Sharon Page. Her story stirred my emotions and that’s what I need from a book or a story.

Good read. It contains the fourth entry in the Chanku series from Kate Douglas which is a tear-jerker. Chanku stories are not for the faint of heart - they normally contain VERY sexy shifters who play both sides of the street with enthusiasm and embrace the concept that 'more is better' [or maybe it's the 'pack that plays together, stays together':]. The other two stories by Sharon Page and Kathleen Dante are both good read-onces. The authors are worth pursuing.

Camille's Dawn by Kate Douglas

This story is really just some closure for Camille, Ulrich and the reader. We really don't know Camille personally, as she is dead before we get a chance. This story gives her mate and daughter a chance to say goodbye and let go. It was a sad story but still filled with all that Kate Douglas stuff you love.

WARNING: This story has plenty of graphic G/G and M/M sexual exploits as well as threesomes and foursomes. Occasionally there is borderline bestiality, which can be a bit much for some readers. In context it makes more sense, but the warning is necessary. There is nothing light about Kate Douglas' erotica, and nothing is left to the imagination. If this is what you are seeking then you have found an entertaining series.

Loved Kate Douglas’s story about Camille spirit, which is trapped and reawaken by Keisha’s pregnancy. It’s a beautiful story about love and forgiveness

Sharon Page “Midnight Man” – lots and lots and lots of sex, ~90% of the story.

“Nigh Pleasures” by Kathleen Dante was my least favorite. I’ve read several of her works, like her style of writing, her characters but the story didn’t quite hit the mark.

I originally bought this book for one of my go-to authors, Kate Douglas. However, it is now one of my favourite re-reads because of the other authors. All the stories are really well written, and all of the authors have since become stand alone in their own right. If you are not sure if you like the genre, start with this book!

This was a decent anthology. Pretty sexy erotica, a lot of shape-shifter and paranormal world building from other books in series that I haven't read, so I didn't quite get it all. Nothing outstanding.

I only read Kate Douglas' story in this book so my review is only on that story. In this story we are with Ulrich while he goes into the beyond to have one last night with his wife and hopefully help her move on. It's a very touching story of love and of course plenty of good sex!!!
