I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

4 Story Stars + 1 Hot Alpha Star

I've said it once...

description

I've said it twice...

description

I will undoubtedly say it a million times...

description

Nalini Singh is a QUEEN of paranormal/urban fantasy romance.

If you consider yourself a paranormal romance fan and you HAVEN'T checked out this series yet, you are just straight screwing yourself, people.

As I've also said before, Ms. Singh is in that top echelon of authors for me.

"Top Echelon" as in we are talking about the they-could-defecate-on-paper-and-I'd-want-to-read-it level of stalk here.

description

It's just that simple, folks.

This book marks the beginning of what Ms. Singh herself has called the second arc of the Psy-Changeling - now dubbed Psy-Changeling Trinity from here on out- series and she starts it off with something we have not seen before:

A BEAR Changeling.

description

And not JUST any bear Changeling.

An ALPHA bear Changeling.

description

A 6 foot, mega hot inch Russian alpha bear Changeling.

description

Now, if you follow my reviews on this series, you know that I am blatantly biased and completely and utterly predisposed toward changelings. (For more in depth discussion on this topic, see HERE and HERE.)

My favorite books in this series (with the exception of that second "HERE" above) always involve a Changeling.

ALWAYS.

description

And Valentin does NOT disappoint my friends.

What a hot bearful of just plain #SCRUMPTIOUS.

description

Seriously though, Valentin is now definitely an honorable mention in the Val's Psy-Changeling Husband Awards.

Hawke and Kaleb are still tied for numero uno, with Lucas picking up first loser, and Clay bringing home the bronze...

Leaving Valentin in a strong fourth place finish position.

So - when you consider whom he's up against...

description

That's, like, totally almost like winning.

description

Silver was a cool glass of heroine and I really liked her.

For whatever reason, I always seem to like the ice queens.

Not sure why...

description

They are always just very layered, in my opinion - when done right, of course - which Nalini does... right, that is.

I really liked how this book started off - it jumped right in.

There is a lot of forward movement with the overarching Trinity Accord/EmNet story line - which did make the story drag a bit in certain places, but I was fine with that.

All in all, another winner by Ms. Singh and a great addition to the series that I already can't wait to re-read.

And with that...I'm off to set up for this huge party my husband decided we needed to have.

Cause, you know, my cooking and hostess skills are a personal strength.

NOT.

3.5 It was alright Stars

I want to start this review off by saying I listened to this book on audio and the lady that read it Angela Dawe did an amazing job. She brought the characters to life with all the different voices she used and she did a pretty good job at the Russian accent too! Now all that being said this book wasn't as good as others, but it wasn't bad either. I liked Valentin and Silver but their relationship was missing something for me. On top of that the author had the hero give the heroine a nickname and it was repeated and over to the point were I was ready to rip my fucking hair out. That nickname was "Silver Fucking Mercant" and after the first 100 times it was said I started yelling

Just saying it lost it's cool after the first 100 or so times......we get it She is Silver Fucking Mercant whatever. At least there was lots of cute little bear cubs! I can't wait for Bo's book to come out.

No, but guys, this book is adorable.
Bears are now my favorite changelings in this world.

description

They are fun, like that friend you call when you want to have a good time out (but also possibly end up in jail).
They are like giant, scary-looking lugs with claws who just want to cuddle and feed you sweets.
They have ridiculous feud with wolves (I mean, they like to go out and run in the winter, instead of sleep in warm and relax? Who normal does that?!)
And most importantly, there is no alpha posturing or male brooding in the woods, because bears are chill.
description

Set in Moscow, directly after main players of previous arc established Trinity Accords, the story follows the courting of Silver Mercant, Kaleb Krychek's most capable assistant by StoneWater alpha, Valentin Nikolaev.
It's not by accident I put the focus on romance part- Valentin made this book for me. I was always adamant in my preference for Nalini's world-building, especially in last couple of books, but for some reason, romance just worked for me here.
Basically, Valentin is head over hills for Silver right from the start (we are informed he is trying to woo her for 10 months already), when there is sudden attempt on her life. In agreement with Ena Mercant, Silver ends up being his guest in Denhome, where he can protect her until they find out who's behind it. Hence, bear pack has a lot of page time and we are getting a lot of those, every-day cute pack moments that were really charming to read because bears (see above).
Let me tell you more about our hero. Valentin is fun, playful and generally high spirited fellow (he has responsibilities, challenges and problems, but he's not overwhelming with it and it's not of source of some man pain that stops him from being happy or smthng like that).
Where traditional alpha hero is impressed with heroine who doesn't back off and go toe-to-toe with him, Valentine would gladly sprawl all over ground, madly grinning, and let her walk over him because he likes how strong she is. It's not that he can't, it's not that he doesn't have backbone- it's just his mo; he is manipulative like that. :)
He also has PhD in psychiatry, which I thought was kind of odd at first, but when you find out more about his background, it becomes clear why he chose that field. There were small touches in building new characters that were really neat and maybe it's the fact they are new changeling species... but everything about them reads fresh, funny and exciting, like NS wanted to tell us about these awesome bears for a long time. :)
Silver is a perfect Mercant which is NOT equal to the perfect Psy as we know them- they have their own set of rules. But, Silver being who she is, is also why I liked the dynamic between her and Valentin. She doesn't have to change or adjust herself to him and his Pack, she just needs to let them in her life and stay who she is. I think that's especially obvious when it comes to Silence. She doesn't break her Silence because of him like we're used to reading- she considered it already following the knowledge of what it did to her people and her own shields, Valentine just gave her means and reason to do something about it sooner.

Now, if romance did work, my issues are mostly tied to the new arc, or specifically, where it is supposed to go.
In first arc (books #1-#12) main characters had a purpose and story had a direction (fall of Silence). We were aware of who is the enemy (The Council) and we knew that our heroes who were of all three races (psy, changelings and humans) have to work together to accomplish their goal. Mini-arc (books #13-#15), tied some loose ends and gave a world some gravity since that big of a change couldn't be enforced without problems and issues- even opposing parties had a point and right to be scared of new age until they knew more and saw consequences.
But Silver Silence told me we are still hazy on those details when it comes to second arc. Here, the good guys are trying to maintain status quo, while bad guys throw obstacles at them, but without any clear target or reason why (from hating psy-changeling hybrid child, to hating Trinity because it includes humans to hating Psy for everything they did or just because they will thrive in chaos- there were just too many reasons for attacks on innocent people in books so far after Council was demolished and it's hard to keep track). Lack of coherence can also be attributed to the fact we don't have one, definite villain- we have these bad guys with sinister names (the Architect, The Patriot), but they are not rounded and they read the same and can only be distinguished by these different causes which again, are confusing and random or they even contradict at one point. Everything regarding attacks from these sinister groups in book was so-so, and I just powered through it to come to more interesting story which for me was definitely Bear pack.

More observation:

- possibly interesting in next books - there is still lingering fear among humans of Psy and their psychic powers and distrust that's deeply rooted. Considering they need them, I am curious to see how will NS resolve this in the future.
- Gay bear was a cute touch. (◡‿◡✿)
-I want more excerpts from Wild Woman magazine

Thank you to publisher and Nalini for kindly providing me an ARC for review.

I'm not going to lie . . . I'm several books behind in Singh's PSY-CHANGELING series. The last one I read was the one about Kaleb Kryksksusksruk (or something like that).

It's not that I didn't enjoy the series--I did--but Kaleb was the guy, the one we'd all been waiting for, so the natural assumption is that the next book won't compare, blah blah, something, blah, and here we are however many years later.

BUT.

Then came SILVER SILENCE, and I'm like, yes, I will take this opportunity to dive back into this fantastic world.

Is it necessary that you read the entire PSY-CHANGELING series before reading this spin-off?

No. I didn't and I was fine.

Should you read at least some of it?

Umm . . . debatable. SILVER SILENCE is what comes after the Big Deal that went down in PSY-CHANGELING. And unlike most PNR series, Singh doesn't write each new installment as a standalone. Each book builds on the previous book, an individual story arc that furthers a long-running story arc. But I'm pretty sure you'd be okay with a basic rundown of the Important Things:

1. This world is composed of three races: the Psy, Changelings, and humans.

Psy have all the abilities associated with the mind, like telepathy and telekinesis, Changelings are all the various shapeshifters, and humans are humans.

2. Psy are Vulcans.

As in they exist in an emotionless state. Willfully.

3. Psy leadership is very, very corupt.

Now that thething happened that we all knew needed to happen, it's a New Day with new, yet surprisingly similar problems.

I think in this world there is always going to be some group of Bad People who want to control the world. And that's fine. Finding new ways to thwart the new schemes of Bad People is one of the things Singh does best.

I say "one of" b/c the thing that Singh actually does best is create endearing groups of shifters, which is what she does (again) in SILVER SILENCE. Only this time, it's a bunch of bears. Russian bears. With lots of cubs.

Bears are hilarious. At least Singh's are.

And this bear goes and does what so many other Changelings have done before him, and falls for an icy, non-feeling Psy. BUT. The way it happens always feels new.

So if you're a fan of paranormal romance, do yourself a favor and check out this new chapter of the Psy-Changeling world. B/c Bears. Are. Best.

Psy-Changeling Trinity?

Questions: Who is Silver's love interest? Is it Bowen, or would that be too obvious? Someone else from the Human Alliance? Will we see more of Kit, possibly starting his own Pack and recruiting hot changelings?

More important questions: Have Anthony and Nikita done the deed yet? When will Hawke and Sienna be "baking cookies"? Who else has been on the receiving end of Stefan's manual? Why is Ming still alive?

The most important question of them all: Will we see shirtless Kaleb, or just regular Kaleb?

Oh my gah, Valentin. *melts into a puddle of goo*

This Changeling alpha bear stole my heart from the get go and he almost ALMOST replaced Hawke as my favorite Nalini Singh hero ever! No small feat coz duh, Hawke is Hawke but oh man, Valentin is right up there.

Silver Silence is the first book out of the second chapter of Nalini Singh's sprawling Psy-Changeling series called Psy-Changeling Trinity. Silence has fallen and a new peace accord has been signed by the three groups: the Human Alliance, the Psy's and the Changelings. But a new group threatens to unravel the fragile bonds of peace that the Trinity has forged. Just when you thought this series couldn't get any better, it does. It really does.
Silver didn't know how to love, but she knew how to hold on to her people.

Silver Mercant rose from being Kaleb Krychek's top aide to become the head of the Em-Net, the worldwide emergency response network. Silence has fallen but despite this Silver still chooses to live under it. She has a good reason to and her reason isn't clear to other characters in the book as well as the readers until it was revealed. The Mercants is one of the most powerful Psy family in the world, and the most secretive. So when an attempt was made on Silver's life, the Mercants did what they had to do their way.

Fortunately for Silver, Valentin Nikolaev, alpha of the StoneWater Bears offered his home and his protection while her family tried to get to the bottom of who wanted Silver killed.

The StoneWater Bears are a strong predator changeling group out of Moscow who went through a very traumatic rift which threatens to tear them part. And Valentin being the Alpha has his hands full with keeping his family safe and strong as they navigate the new changes brought about by the Trinity Accord. But Silver has always fascinated Valentin. The man and his bear recognized their mate in Silver and despite her Silence, Valentin goes above and beyond in trying to win her trust and her heart. And we know what happens when you put a determined alpha bear together with a reluctant Silent Psy in one place, right?

This was my favorite part of the book for me. Yes, this book does have multiple POVs. It has intrigued and a dash of suspense. But the romance...the ROMANCE was top-notch swoonworthy.
“Explain what's happening.”
 “We're happening.”

Valentin, like most changeling Alpha, is determined. Gah! His devotion and patience as the pursues Silver "sneaky like a cat" was everything. He was funny as hell and he respects Silver and treats her as his equal. He totally won me over and Silver didn't stand a chance. He was one determined bear.

I loved how Ms. Singh took time to develop not just their romance but each of their character arcs. Silver went from being Silent to the kind of person that was perfect fit for Valentin, who has always worn his heart on his sleeve when it comes to Silver. I loved how the StoneWater Bears Denhome was explored in the book. The vivid imagery of their cave as well as the relationships between Valentin and his sisters, as well as his lieutenants added an interesting layer to the story and to the romance.

A few familiar characters from the first chapter of the Psy-Changeling series made some appearances but not all. Lots of names were dropped though which made me so happy because yes, I knew these characters. Their presence were felt but not too much that it became distracting. This book is definitely all about these new characters, specifically, the StoneWater bears and the BlackEdge wolves, which I am already in love with.
“I’ll be beary good,” he promised, his face lit from within.
She had the sense of playing with a wild thing. “Now you’re just beyond bearing.”

Silver Silence did not disappoint. It's tautly written with fascinating characters and an intricate plot that holds your interest from beginning until the end.  There were a lot of plot threads that were left open and I for one, am intrigued.  I'm definitely looking forward to more Psy-Changeling Trinity.

I loved both of the main characters in this book - so that makes it 4-star worthy no matter what. But, there were a couple of problems that I never usually have with this author and they had to do with editing.

First off, this is not a grammatically correct sentence:

Valentin's motionlessness reminded her once again that, playful or not, he was a bear alpha, could be deadly.

Now, you all know that I'm usually NOT a grammar nazi in any way, shape or form. Hell, I make up words all the time to suit my needs. I'm a vocabulartist that way. But, there were many sentences like the above one and it made me have to keep going back to reread the sentence because it didn't make sense if I was just reading at my normal speed. I kept doing the old: 'wait, what?' thing and having to read it again.

This is a real photo of me. Do you like my new hair-do? I'm digging it cuz it matches my poodle's do.

It's one of those things that pulls you out of the story, along with another issue that was going on: The "Who the hell is talking now?" problem. You know what I mean. When there is all of this dialogue and you can't tell who is speaking because nobody's names are mentioned, and then someone says something that makes no sense, so you suddenly realize that you thought the wrong person was speaking, so you have to go back and reread it because you had who said what confused the whole time. You know.

Wait, who said they were going to kill him? I thought he was the good guy.

And then, there was too much redundancy. Another thing someone should have pointed out. Like the words: Silver Fucking Mercant. Please! It was funny and cute a couple of times, but when you say it that often, it loses its appeal. In a big way. And, when the character herself starts calling herself that name, we officially have a problem.

I can call you a badass, others can call you a badass, but if YOU call yourself a badass, you are officially no longer a badass. That's how it works. Sorry, those are the rules.

And, *ducks head*, I'm on the side of those who think the story did a little dragging and could have used and editing eye to cut it down a bit. It wasn't bad. Definitely not in the league of Kristen Ashley or Laurell K. Hamilton. But, it could have been a bit more concise.

See, now I think Darth would have made a great editor. His grammar was always impeccable. And, he's not afraid of being brutally honest. I wish Laurell K. Hamilton's people would hire him.

So, all of my problems that made me take this from a 5-star review, to a 4-star review could have been fixed by a good editor. I can honestly say that I haven't felt that way about a Nalini Singh book before. I really love her writing.

Really. I swear.

As for the story itself: very cute, very fun. You will want a bear-boyfriend if you read it. Also, maybe to party with some bears. Those guys seem like a lot of fun.

Meh... I don't know what's wrong with Nalini in her recent books. Maybe its the same story development all over Again.

I liked Valentin. I didn't like Silver. She changed too soon from silent to not. I hated every time someone called her Silver Fucking Mercant. So lame.

The only thing i was excited about in this book, was Silver'r brother relationship with another guy. This gives me hope for a M/m and not only in this series...I'll leave it here! :D

My rating doesn't mean I won't read anything Nalini writes. I will. She's still one of my favorite authors.

I hope I won't loose my fan card, but Silver Silence was a boring book. The external threat wasn't gripping enough (deja read plentifully), the romance was kind of meh. I wasn't invested in the characters, and while the political and the world building were interesting, the overabundance of rich prose was killing me (I can't call it purple but barely). And if I don't hear the phrase Silver Fucking Mercant an other time I'll die happy.

It seems that this book is one of her most lauded, I fail to see it honestly, as I could easily put it down without regrets.

Re-read August 21st 2018. Loved it just as much as the first time and the audio was excellent!
4.5 Stars

Silver Mercant, a powerful Psy telepath, and director of the newly formed Emergency Response Network embraced Silence (completely suppressing one’s emotions) from an early age, but the charismatic Valentin, Alpha of StoneWater, a bear changling pack, has been disturbing her carefully controlled existence. Whether it is by showing up unannounced at her apartment or place of work in the guise of EmNet business, or just to ask her out for ice cream, he manages to shake up her reserve and get under her skin. There was a time Silence wasn’t her way of life, she was a passionate little girl, and now that it is no longer against the law to have emotions for Psy, Silver wonders about that long dormant side of her. Valentin makes her wonder.

Valentin has been fascinated by Silver since he laid eyes on her. She seems made up of fire and ice, and just the kind of woman he wants for a mate. Valentin’s determined to stir those emotions he senses burning under her cold exterior. When someone tries to poison Silver it becomes clear stashing her at the bear’s clan home is the best option for her protection. Valentin is outraged that someone could’ve killed his precious Silver, but her staying at his Denhome gives him a better chance at capturing her heart.

I’ve only read one other book in the Psy-Changling series, the first book, but I feel like I would’ve enjoyed Silver Silence even without reading any previous books in the series. There was enough information given to get a feel for this world to appreciate Valentin and Silver’s story on its own.

Loved this romance! It was amusing to see Silver flustered with Valentin’s attempts to infiltrate her life. And I dare you not to fall in love with Valentin! He’s a dangerous Alpha for sure, but at his center he’s a big loveable teddy bear! And it was impossible not to fall for the StoneWater clan! They’re so openly affectionate, fun loving, and mischievous! “Bears.” The cubs were the cutest, wedging themselves bit by bit into Silver’s heart!

Even though you might think Silver would come off as an ice princess, at her core she was lovely; principled, loyal, and protective of Valentin and his beloved bears. I enjoyed Nalini Singh’s writing so much I know I’ll go back to read some more of the Psy-Changling series.

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

While I've read Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series I never read the original Psy-Changeling series (*loads Amazon to buy all the precioussss*). I listened to the audiobook of Silver Silence to prepare for Ocean Light and boy, am I impressed. I loved this story beary, beary much!
Bears have big bodies and big hearts. No one can ever argue otherwise. But there is a school of thought that says these big, blunt, gorgeous, and often aggravating creatures are the most sensitive changelings of us all. It’s hard to hurt a bear … but if and when you succeed, their pain is enormous.

Nalini Singh created a world so incredibly complex, creative, original and rich it's mind-blowing. I am full of awe and admiration. It seems real, tangible, as if this future could be ours, paranormal aspects aside.

Silver was a conundrum in the beginning. She was supposed to be emotionless but how can you like somebody who is supposed to be unmoved by pretty much everything? I really liked Silver right from the start. No idea how the author did it but kudos to Nalini Singh. As the story progressed I fell in love with Silver's heart, the way she loved Valentin was just so beautiful because she did it with no holds barred which was remarkable considering her conditioning of being Silent and holding on to it for such a long time.

“She cleared her mind of all other thoughts, her attention only on the wild, beautiful man who called her his sunshine and who saw starlight in her eyes.”

Dibs on Valentin. What a soul. He is one of the sweetest, most endearing, humorous, mischievous, loyal male character I've had the pleasure to read. He hoped against hope and loved with an open heart despite it getting bruised over and over again. He was putty in Silver's hands, but growly, sexy and dominant as a counterpoint and loved unconditionally. Valentin and Silver's banter was one of the cutest I've read so far.

“I’ll be beary good,” he promised, his face lit from within.
She had the sense of playing with a wild thing. “Now you’re just beyond bearing.”

I read that some people had troubles with the information flood. I agree that there is a lot of information and if you haven't read the original series it might get overwhelming. I think the audiobook helped a great deal with that. On the opposite side those who are Psy-Changeling World pros might get bored by the repetition of well-known facts. I wouldn't know. All I can say is that I found all the details immensely fascinating.

The narrator of Silver Silence is amazeballs. She does male and female character and does them so well that I really enjoyed listening to her. I usually have troubles listening to a female narrator doing both but this one did a fabulous job.

To say I adored Silver Silence isn't praise enough. I can't wait to read Ocean Light. Plus I have lots of books to catch up to. Guess, what I'll listen to next?

“I love you, Valyusha.”
“I’ll be your teddy bear anytime, Starlight.” Taking her hand, he pressed it to the bass beat of his heart. “It’s yours. Forever and always.”

I loved everything about this book! :)

Somebody was complaining that it was too slow/long - not for me! If it was another 400 pages longer I would have loved it all the same! But that's me!!! :)

The highlight was Valentine! A big, toght outside soft inside, big burly Alpha bear!!!

I loved him to pieces! How he acted with his clan; with adults, but mostly with cubs!!! It was heart-melting!!!

Also his devotion and love toward Silver... just... ahhhhh!!!

The whole clan was wonderful!!! Playful, rowdy, endearing!!! Just wonderful!!!

... the bernacle...LOL

woldn't you love to pet a cub???!!! Ahhhhh!!!

And what to say about the clan leaving a peluche for Silver??? How endearing it is??!!!!!!

This book is full of moments like these that made me melt!!!!

The background story is interesting enough, but it doesn't overwhelm the love story. It is perfectly balanced. It is also very needed: being we humans a blood/power hungry there will always be villains. Still the overall feeling is that love conquers all!!! And that's just perfect!!!

A new Psy-Changeling series?

description

I cannot tell you how freaking AMAZING this book is! And don't even get me started on Valentin, he's my new book BF. Wow! Despite what some of you might think of Silver, I actually liked her, too. She's a kick-ass woman and even a brain surgery won't take her from her right path. The whole koncept of this story is awesome and the pages disappeared too quickly. I wished we'd gotten even more from these two characters and about what happened to his father. Also, Bo, I really hope we get to see more of him. But we humans are a tough breed! We finally get some huge clues as to who the big bad guys are and even if the whole book sucked (which it obviously didn't) it was all worth it because of Kaleb. Ahhh... Say what you want, he's still my favourite. But Valentin comes second, so that's saying something.

To sum up my feeling after the read...oh yeah!

I've been following this series since the very beginning. I have favorite books that I read again and again, and I'm definitely more into shifters than PSY, but nevertheless the author's writing, her creativity and imagination has been a source of captivation for me ever since reading Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1).

Now, since the author has started her second big arc in the Psy-Changeling series, the wealth of information has been a bit overwhelming. I've noticed while reading the last few books, that I have had a hard time keeping up with everything. I love the politics that has been connecting the different species over the years, but it's sometimes quite challenging to keep all the characters and different story arcs separated.

Reading Silver Silence made it even more obvious that the further I get along in this series the more difficult it is to keep up.

And the most shocking happened, I almost stopped reading Silver Silence.

During the first 30-40% of the book I wasn't invested in the story at all and  didn't connect with Valentin or Silver. I felt absolutely destroyed, disappointed and depressed that I wasn't enjoying this book.

Fortunately I was persistent and kept on reading. It got better. And better. And then - WOW!!! Literally OMG!!!! I was fully immersed. And when PART 2 started I was 100% emotionally involved.

And the most amazing thing happened I fell in love with Valentin and Silver.

I love bear shifters, I've always had a soft spot for them ever since I read Shelly Laurenston's shifter series. They are my favorite shifters of all. Maybe because they are so intimidatingly big, curious, blunt and cuddly. Valentin was all of that in addition to being a fantastic ALPHA. He was adoringly sneaky, and so, so lovable. His bone-deep devotion and love for Silver was palpable in every decision, gesture and word. Valentin's believe and faith in their connection was indestructible and beautifully emotional.

Silver on the other hand went through an incredible transformation. She was a typical PSY, emotionlessly cold and silent. It was a privilege to read the intricate and layered character development that Silver went through - TWICE!!!! Nothing in this journey was hastened or skipped. Her transformation felt believable and natural. And it was amazingly heart-warming and beautiful.

That said, the second half of the book made all the difference. It was stunningly gripping and captivating and the author did an outstanding job bringing these two very opposite characters together.

Silver Silence started off a brand-new, and far reaching arc. It introduced new species, new characters, and story developments that shook the foundation and believe system in such a way that anything is possible.

Now, more than ever, I'm curious to see where Nalini Singh is taking us. Her imagination knows no bounds and it's been a privilege to be part of this saga.

If you like paranormal romance you can’t go wrong with Nalini Singh’s Psy Changeling series. When you look up binge reading, Nalini Singh’s name is sure to be there. Silver Silence is a passionate and heartwarming love story. It’s compelling, sexy and absolutely swoon worthy.
“She cleared her mind of all other thoughts, her attention only on the wild, beautiful man who called her his sunshine and who saw starlight in her eyes.”

Silver Silence seen through the eyes of an alpha bear changeling who is determined to win the heart of the mesmerizing woman he’s chosen to be his mate, no matter how impossible it may seem. Especially when said woman has been trained since early childhood to not feel. But Valentin Nikolaev senses the fire and sunshine beneath the ice and he’ll use every trick up his sleeve to get her. After ten months of sneakily trying to woo her, he’s saved from kidnaping her in order to properly court her —as per bear tradition— after he stops an attempt on her life and her best choice is to lay low in the heart of his bear clan.

It is a love story told by the seemingly emotionless woman in charge of EmNet, the worldwide emergency response network comprised by all races at a time when a divided world is trying to unite. But not all are convinced that unity is a step towards betterment, some will fight to keep the world divided and while stability is achieved Silver Mercant needs to focus on her job, not the unruliness Valentin brings.
“Today an apple, tomorrow ice cream, the next day licking honey from her body, it was all about strategy… and stubborn bearish hope.”

Nalini Singh once again proves her prowess at writing addicting stories. Her Psy-Changeling series have the right balance between new and familiar, between heartwarming and heartrending. This compelling story shows us just how love can conquer all.

Valentin is charismatic, smart, absolutely swoon worthy. He wears his heart on his sleeve, loving wholeheartedly and fiercely protecting his clan. He charmed the ice around Silver’s Silence and I fell for him right along with her. How could I not fall when he was all male alpha sexy being cute and funny, sneaky as a cat or sweet as a teddy bear! The man signed his secret-not secret admirer gifts he left for Silver with Mr. I. M. A. Medvezhonok. Translation Mr. I. M. A. teddy-bear.
“He needed a mate who’d refuse to take any of his shit. She’d also drive him insane, of that he was certain, but bears were lunatics anyway. It’d be fun. All he had to do was convince Silver of that.”

I could probably make a very long list of all the amazing things about Valentin, but I think you get the picture. For a man so wonderful, it’s only fitting that he get to have an equally great partner. Silver is pretty awesome in her own right. Even though she has a different way of showing it, her viewpoint regarding family aligns with Valentin’s and when need be, she’s just as ruthless as the alpha bear himself.

While there have been other Psy romances in the series, it still feels highly unlikely given their lack of emotional skills. Nalini makes it work though. The love between Valentin and Silver feels organic in its development however difficult and almost impossible it may seem given Silver’s special circumstances; its the depth and strength are directly correlated complications they face. That is to say, their love is huge and absolutely heartwarming and fun!
“You have anything but suits in your closet?”
“No, I sleep this way and wake up perfectly pressed.”

Also touching are all the bear clan events which I loved and moved the story forward. I mean, come on, BEARS! They’re boisterous, cuddly, and fun. Along with the main story, Nalini lays out an overall arc for this spinoff series. I expect several Psy-human pairings but eagerly await anything Ms. Singh throws our way.

Silver Silence is book #16 in the Psy-Changeling series, book #1 in the Psy-Changeling Trinity series by Nalini Singh. It is a standalone paranormal romance, told from various points of view with a happy ending.

Nalini Singh is hands down my PNR Queen. Every time I pick up a book by her, she amazes me with her intricate world-and character-building. Her books are seriously the best – and as soon as I finished Silver Silence, I knew it was going straight near the top as one of my favorite NS books of all time. It’s up there with Heart of Obsidian and Kiss of Snow, and if you know me, you know how obsessed I am with those books. So to say I loved Silver Silence would be a huge understatement. NS blew me away with this incredible read. She took me back to the early books that made me fall in love with the Psy-Changeling series, where the romance was a much heavier factor that they were in the newer books. Not to say I don’t love the recent books too, but I missed the original feel of the older books. NS gives that feel back to us in spades, mostly in the form of a gorgeous, charming bear alpha who is determined to win the heart of his Psy.

“Have you thought about my offer?” he asked, the laughter still in his eyes.
“The answer remains the same,” Silver said as a burn spread through her chest. “I do not wish to go have ice cream with you.”
“It’s really good ice cream.”

StoneWater alpha Valentin Nikolaev knew from the moment he met Silver Mercant, she was his and he was hers. But this bear alpha is smart and charming, so his courtship of his mate is a COURTSHIP. His months-long courtship has him showing up at her apartment at odd hours, much to Silver’s annoyance – Valentin is a bear she just can’t get rid of or avoid. But when Silver ends up poisoned one morning during an unexpected visit from the bear alpha, Valentin steps up his game to protect the one woman meant for him… all while still trying to win her over.

“Solnyshko moyo.” A kiss to the dampness of her neck as he roughly spoke words whose meaning had deepened to raw intimacy with a simple change in order.
Sun of my heart. Sunshine of my life.

The slow burn romance between Silver and Valentin was DIVINE. I was in PNR heaven reading about all the ways Valentin tried to endear himself to Silver, and Silver not giving him the time of day… much. Valentin is one determined bear alpha who does so many adorable things I was swooning and giggling like crazy the whole story (he tells her to call him her teddy bear!!!). Silver is her own amazing, badass character who I’m so happy got her own story. If you loved the earlier Psy-Changeling books, or are just looking for a darn good PNR read, you absolutely must read this book.

“I love you, Valyusha.”
“I’ll be your teddy bear anytime, Starlight.” Taking her hand, he pressed it to the bass beat of his heart. “It’s yours. Forever and always.”

I have to say it. I can’t hold it back anymore… but BEARS ARE MY NEW FAVORITE CHANGELINGS!!!! I love Valentin and Silver – Starlight and her teddy bear – but I have to be honest and tell you that the bear changelings are half the reason why I love this book so, so much. They are playful, ridiculous, party-animals, charming, sneaky – the bear clan had so much personality it was literally overflowing over the pages. I adored the bears so freaking much. They are without a doubt my new favorite changelings (sorry, DarkRiver and SnowDancer!) because honestly, if I were a changeling, I’d obviously be a bear. (Also, I’ve never used as many bear emojis as I have after reading this book.)

If you’ve never read the Psy-Changeling series (what are you doing with yourself), you can still absolutely read Silver Silence on its own. I don’t recommend it, mainly because of how incredible the original series is and how much better you’ll understand the Psy-Changeling world if you read it, especially in this second arc. I know fifteen books can be daunting, but trust me, once you start Nalini Singh, you won’t be able to stop. Either way, if you’ve read the series or not, you have to read Silver Silence and experience the wonder that is bear changelings!

Silver Silence is the beginning of a new but not new series by Nalini Singh. How the author puts it is another "season". This book follows after the Psy Changeling series. There have been some new developments of course. We have humans, psy, and changeling working together but not everyone approves of it. And there is a group of "terrorists" wanting to destroy the alliance that they have created. Our heroine Silver, has always had silence, it keeps her under control. But she does have a family, where they look out for her. But when her life is proved to be in danger, she reluctantly agrees to go stay at a bear pack close to home in Russia. Valentin is the alpha of the Stone Water Bears. He has a duty to his pack, and is dealing with a part of his wolves not supporting him being alpha which is breaking the hearts of the pack. But Valentin also knows that Silence is his mate, despite her sense of control over everything. He knows he will have to slowly win her over, but he is a bear so he is more than up to the challenge.
“Valentin found a mate worthy of him.” Silver took that as the compliment it was meant to be—but she was also bear enough now to say, “I’d say I found a mate worthy of me.
In Silver Silence we see the way that these characters slowly come together. Valentin is your typical alpha male of course but not. He knows he can't be all domineering and controlling with a Psy female, especially when they keeps her emotion under a tight leash. I like how he tries to emulate Lucas, in how he seduced his Psy....but of course he refuses to follow the example of the wolf alpha. Bears don't like wolves for some reason,,,its kinda funny. What I liked is seeing how Valentin and the other members of his pack tread slowly and patiently with Silver especially since bear changelings aren't very patient or slow. I also found myself intrigued by bear changelings. I really liked seeing the way they are with each other. They are rowdy, playful, can hold their liquor, and can sleep through anything and boy do they love their sleep hehe Typical bears right?
"Bears have big bodies and big hearts. No one can ever argue otherwise. But there is a school of thought that says these big, blunt, gorgeous, and often aggravating creatures are the most sensitive changelings of us all. It’s hard to hurt a bear … but if and when you succeed, their pain is enormous."
We also see some intrigue and mystery develop in the plot. I will admit that this is the one aspect of the story I struggled with. There is a lot of new information that Singh puts out, and can be a bit confusing and it was a little difficult keeping everything straight. But that is the only thing that kept this book from being a five star. It does have its emotional moments especially toward the end, but boy this book really tests you, pulls you into a sexy and fun changeling and psy cultures, and seeing three groups come together in unity and try to make a better world for themselves. The author has succeeded in meeting my expectations for this book and I can't wait to see what she pulls out of her clever hat next!!! Silver Silence will keep you on your toes, sexy as sin, tugs at the heartstrings and will keep you wanting more!! FABULOUS ROMANCE!!

I have nothing to add!!!

I loved every hour, minute, second, millisecond, every letter, word, sentence and paragraph in this book. This says it all really.

 photo this is the best_zpsb7nnvcxq.jpg

10++++ Be sneaky like a cat Stars.

Book 16 in the Psy/Changeling series and book 1 in the Trinity you’d think it couldn’t get any better? Well you are wrong.

I really do not know how Ms. Singh does but she is a genius. If I had to name a favourite series in the paranormal romance genre then this would be one of them the other one? The Guild Hunter Series. If you haven’t read the series then it is a must for 2017.

I had high hopes for this book and I my anticipation for it was high and I can say that I wasn’t disappointed. Psy/Changeling are my favourite types of couples. Basically I love shifters.
Valentin alpha of the StoneWater Bear Clan is persistent in courting his ice queen Silver Merchant. Ten months he has been courting her and it takes a poisoning to get Silver into clan territory. This is one of the best clans there is because Bears. Boisterous, love to party and well Bears. Especially the barnacle.

Several bears- in bear form- stand up on their back paws to dance. At least two were holding beer bottles in their paws. One had tinsel wrapped around his neck and was, for some unknown reason, wearing sunglasses.

Valentin is one of my favourite Heroes of this series.

Silver fucking Merchant protégé to the Merchant house. Director to the EmNet. She is one of the very few that needs silence as a pure telepath she also has a gift that is a curse. She is pure ice, ruthless and a true equal. And yet I still thought that she is a fantastic heroine.

Silver and Valentin together. Epic. True mates and bloody awesome.

 photo King to his queen_zpsbctk4yfl.png

The Psy need the humans now more than ever. The plot is outstanding as per usual and although navigating new territory it doesn’t get boring. I was highly entertained the whole time throughout the book. I was trying really hard not to let those tears out and the hubby caught me.
What I would love to see? BlackEdge (Wolves) & StoneWater (Bears) would be very cool Ms. Singh just saying.

For the moment and the next one

4.5 Stars

This book proved me so wrong. I thought I was beginning to fall out of love with Nalini Singh, the last few books in her Psy-Changeling series have disappointed me. And then came Silver Silence and the start of a spin off series. I was sceptical. Was it just going to be more of the same? Was I in for another disappointment? Yes and no.

Yes, because it was more of the same Nalini Singh, but old school Singh. Silver Silence reminded me of her earlier books. These are the ones that I initially fell in love with and the memory of which has kept me reading her newer releases even after experiencing a streak of books that I haven’t really enjoyed. I loved them that much. Like the earlier books this was heavily centred around the romance between Silver, a Psy woman you will be familiar with if you have read the original series, and Valentin, a new Changeling character who also brings along with him a whole new culture.

Now, we come to the crux of why I loved this book: all’s I can say is…bears. If it weren’t so unprofessional I would also be adding a million heart emojis at the end of that. I adored the bears, it was hard not to. From Valentin the alpha of the bear clan to the adorable gangster cubs. They are brash, loud, playful and choc full of charisma, it was easy to see why Silver fell for Valentin and risked everything to be part of it.

What I really liked about Singh’s Psy-Changeling series was that although (to begin with) the romance was the most important aspect of the book, it also pushed the main story arc forward. In Silver Silence Singh has gone back to the same model. The balance was just right, heavy on the romance, but with a bigger story in the background which helps bring characters together. The story builds on what was created in the Psy-Changeling series and continues exploring the pitfalls of a fallen Silence. This is why I highly recommend that you read the Psy-Changeling series before starting on Trinity. It lends a much deeper, richer read when you understand the background and some of the other characters. I believe you could read and enjoy this without having read the original series, no doubt you would enjoy the romance; however, I find it hard to disassociate the original and look at it as an entirely new series.

Bottom line: I went into this book expecting same-old same-old and to continue falling a little out of love with Nalini Singh’s books. Instead, she smashed my expectations and reaffirmed why I pick up every single thing she writes. With the aid of some adorable bears she has breathed new life into her most beloved series.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for a really good love story. Singh doesn't just give us one but two woo-ings and some really fantastic chemistry to swoon over. I absolutely loved Valentin and Silver story. Who wouldn't want to have someone love them with the persistence shown by the bear alpha...even if he was trying to think like a cat.

You will never be disappointed by picking up a Nalini Singh novel. Silver Silence swept me away and right into the PSY/Changeling world.

I received this ARC copy of Silver Silence from Berkley Publishing Group. This is my honest and voluntary review. Silver Silence is set for publication July 13, 2017.

3 silver(ish) STARS ★★★✩✩
This book is for … die hard fans of the series. 16 books into a universe there can hardly be any breakthroughs concept-wise.

Overall.
Let's not pretend I didn't know exactly what I was getting into. I mean Silver Silence is the 16th part in a series on lovesick shapeshifters trying to court humans or pseudo-emotionless mental freaks (or any other variation involving 2 out of the 3 races). I was just short of bored reading this, but there’s really nobody at fault here other than me. I know the world, its logic, and the stereotypical ending. At least we finally got away from the Northern American continent. Some of the love stories didn't take place there either but there was a definite monopoly to the situation. Nalini probably tried to mix it up a bit with a change of scenery, but it can count as nothing more but the bare minimum.

It was very refreshing to see a different side of the shapeshifters. The focus has been on feral cats and wolves thus far, but the bears of Moscow definitely bring on a playful and cosy atmosphere that I could see myself settling into. (You know, if shapeshifters were real and I'd actually find one I could build a stable relationship with [cries in bearish].) The characters in both the bear clan and the Mercant clan were interesting and quite unusual in their conestallation.

The arch of suspense did actually differ a bit from the usual modus operandi, but that's the least a faithful reader can ask for. I won't elaborate on it too much or else I fear I might spoil your fun.

What’s happening.
‘Love is no rose. It’s a goddamn weed that digs its roots in so deep, there’s no hope of getting it out.’

This pretty much sums up any bear that has set his mind on a mate. And although Silver doesn't know it yet, she will need Valentin's determination more than anything else. Almost assasinated by a faceless enemy, she seeks refuge in his clan, and finds so much more than a shelter from the evil.
Con:
bears get a little too cosy from time to time
threat closer than one might think
bears are broken too
Pro:
cuddly bears everywhere
A+ support for Mission Safe the World
Silver Fucking Merchant is just what the bears needed

2021 reread: Past me was wrong. Valentin is amazing and I love every part of this book. I think my connection issue initially was because we'd just come off of so many excellent Psy books. But that's a me thing, not a Silver Silence thing. This book is amazing. From the romance to the overarching story. I love every moment of it and could barely put it down on this re-read.

Silver Silence is a book that definitely benefited from me not reviewing it immediately after I read it. I remember distinctly that I came to love it after I finished that first time, but it took me a LONG time to really connect to Valentin, especially. Silver I was always connected with, but Valentine….not so much. I think because he was just so different .

Which obviously makes the fault mine. Because I want different. I don’t want to read about the same heroes and heroines over and over again with different names. I love the world that Nalini Singh has created here, and the huge variety of characters, cultures, and people.

Obviously, we’ve known Silver – at least peripherally, and recently more closely – for quite some time. She’s always intrigued me. And when I first heard that this book was going to be Silver’s, I was sure that Bowen was going to be the hero. Wrong. But I’m so happy I was wrong. Valentine is perfect for Silver. As she is for him.

This is the first book in the new Psy-Changeling Trinity series that starts immediately following the events in Allegiance of Honor – which you’ll recall was a bit of a “where are they now” book, except one that had an amazing story. So we’re still in the same, albeit newly made, world of the Psy, Changelings, and Humans. The triumverate that makes up the planet, and Trinity is the beginning of them trying to figure out how to live, for the first time in hundreds of years, together with each other. Silence has fallen. The Psy are starting to feel. Humans are gaining power. And there’s a ton of resentment, mistrust, and worry to go around.

But there’s also a strong will, by many, to move forward, to make it better. To heal the wounds. I once thought that this series would end when Silence had fallen. Because that was the goal for so many books. And so many stories end when the main battle is won. Nalini has taken it further, where it truly and naturally would go. The story isn’t over when the battle is won. Life, change, is a constant battle. Some small, some large, but the struggle and the drive to continue along….it doesn’t just stop.

There are a lot of logistics to work out yet. How, after so much discord and wrong-doing, will these three disparate races learn to trust; to love? This first book, in the second series, of the Psy-Changeling world begins to tackle just that.

I, for one, can’t wait to see where we go. Can’t wait to see them succeed. I need to see that success, especially in the world that I currently live in. After all, this is why I read fiction. Not only to escape from the real world – which is increasingly too harsh for me – but to see the best, to see the possibilities, to see others overcome evils just as great as stand in the real world.

When I read this for the second time, I loved everything immediately. I love Valentine – because I understand him now. Silver, I always loved. I adore Ena. That didn’t change from the first read – I am absolutely relish Grandmother Mercant.

But what really struck me the second read through, is to watch and pay attention to all the people fighting for what’s right. Quietly struggling to do good. To not lose hope when things seem horrible, but continue pushing for what I know to be right. Thank you for that, Ms. Singh. Thank you.

This book was around 500 pages ........ not enough pages! There are few books that can even hold my attention without scanning for 500 pages and this one did that and could have gone on for another 500 pages.

Silver and Valentin are the couple in this new excursion that is part of the new "Trinity" story arc. We get to see a few people we already knew like the most powerful man in the series Kaleb Krychek which we could not leave behind, since he just adds to any scene.

The story revolves around the persistence of Valentin (an alpha bear changeling) and the semi-Silenced Silver (hence the title), there is the usual life threatening plot that goes with almost all of the books in this series and the drama and several subplots just make for an intoxicating mix of drama, romance and family values (these families value "disposing" of anyone who threatens the family). Since the book starts out with an assassination attempt (this is in the synopsis so not a spoiler) the "families" involved have simple solutions if they can find the culprit.

The book has several scenes that are just hilarious and an equal number that are just as warm.

The book starts out at full speed after about 2 pages and seldom lets up so hang on because it is going to be a bumpy ride for about 500 pages and you will still want more when it is done.

Bottom line: Great story, exceptional romance, amazing plot and subplots, humor, engaging and memorable characters. So what more could you want? 5 Stars and still thinking about it 2 days later.

"Surely yes."

“I’m bigger and meaner than you.” Krychek raised an eyebrow.
“Bigger, yes. Meaner? Let’s leave that an open question.”

I never thought I could love the bear clan StoneWaters, like I love SnowDancers and DarkRiver.
Dear god, The BEARS!!!

They were one rowdy gang.😃
I loved their antics and fun loving nature along with the huge capacity for ferocious love and loyalty.
Even The most dangerous psy Kaleb krychek had to teleport a ten-foot-tall cask of beer and tell them he’d be teleporting it in to the nearest volcano unless someone sat down and discuss the territorial issue with him. Because they refuse to take Kaleb seriously until he’d “have a beer” with them. Like seriously?! Kaleb is one scary monster!
And Silver Mercant, she was an alpha female through and through. A perfect match for Valentin.
I loved him, His unwavering love and devotion to heroine was beautiful.

Four and a half
Like many readers the closer to publication date for this book the more excited I got. The snippets the author released more than wet my appetite and knowing that this time we were getting an alpha bear instead of the usual feline or wolves definitely had me champing at the bit to read this book.
Still set within the Psy-Changeling world and yet embracing how the new Trinity accord is starting to shake things up. For too long humans have lived in fear of the more dominant races that share their planet and now as it's becoming more clear that the Psy need fresh input to maintain the net and their shields it's becoming clear that forces are at work to violently shatter any hopes of cooperation and peace.
Into this scenario the author throws Silver who fans have long known is a force to be reckoned with and a very determined suitor in the shape of Valentin. We are instantly thrown into the story as whilst trying to flirt with the 'Silent' Silver Valentin realises she's been poisoned and it's a race to save her life. Who can be trusted? It's decided that whilst Silver regains her strength the safest place from her enemies is inside Valentin's den which makes the normally outrageously blunt bear feel all kinds of happy thoughts. Yes he will protect her, yes he's going to do all in his power to gain skin privileges with her and if that means acting like a sneaky cat well bring it on! Yet all is far from well in Valentin's clan and whilst forces plot outside his den there's even more sadness within.
I'm really enjoying seeing the other side of the Psy and thought seeing Silver release the powers and resources of EmNet really showed how things are changing. Yes it's hard for humans to fully trust a race that has been cruel at times but to the Psy their actions were simply just expedient. Knowing the depths the Psy have plummeted in order to rise above all others means getting those who have been wronged to help is an almost impossible task . Plus those who seek power are working behind the scenes to cause disruption and hatred. The idea that Psy, Changelings and Humanity should not just coexist but evolve together is at the core of this book and the romance here allowed the author to go in directions that surprised me.
Valentin felt completely different to the shifters we usually get and his interactions with his clan were so funny at times. Yet I never doubted that he would do anything for Silver and it became very poignant. Ok I'm not as sold on Silvers about face as I would like but nevertheless was happy with the ending that came all too quickly. Although I do admit faced with such cuddly cuteness around I really can't blame her!

Mi review en emojis:

🤤😍🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
