Alright, I know not everyone out there is a Karin Slaughter fan, but those people are wrong and clearly not to be trusted. All kidding aside, most everyone familiar with Ms. Slaughter's work knows that she can be counted on for violence, gore, and disturbing content. The Kept Woman provides all of the above, yet delivers a side dish of softer material as well. As I have had many people contact me saying "This is my first Slaughter book and I wasn't really feeling it", I think it's important to note that this is a TERRIBLE book to pick up as your first read by the author. Her latest is #8 (or, if you feel as I do that Will Trent is technically just is a continuation of the Grant County series, then #13), so if you are picking this up and trying to read it as a standalone, I'd agree that the experience would be absolutely terrible. Like 1 star worthy. This entire book is an installment tying up loose ends from the previous books with major bombshells and character development that would go completely unnoticed and be extremely confusing if picked up without the proper backstory. That said, Slaughter also just isn't for some people, and I promise to respect that. Back to the review...
I'll attempt to dodge the minefield of spoilers ahead, as this book is filled with them, so just know this book is way better than I can do it justice in this review. The prologue even starts with a bang; this is one of those stories where you have to try and remember the first chapter, as it comes back around toward the end of the book, just in a less cryptic way. For those who love police procedurals as much as I do, you're in for a treat because this one was really fun to try and figure out as you go. It's no give away that the central focus of this book is Angie, and dang it if KS didn't make me feel the slightest bit of feels for her. We FINALLY get that backstory into Polaski's secret past; this was by far the most rewarding of her novels since Beyond Reach (OMG Karin I still haven't forgiven you for that one). It took me a hot minute to warm up to Will Trent after that. Of course he's been welcomed into the fold, but Angie is like that irritating bug you can't shake; you finally think you're rid of her just to find out you need another round of antibiotics. I positively have loathed Angie from her introduction to the series, but she's one of those that you love to hate and are secretly pleased she keeps popping back in and keeping all the drama ramped up.
In addition to all the Angie bombshells and starting to develop pity for her, this is actually a darn good police procedural. The author has always done thorough research into her plot lines to ensure they are realistic as possible. I've lived in Atlanta almost my entire life, so its exciting to read about stories in settings that I'm familiar with and can picture vividly. She consistently brings back some of the best places and introduces us to new ones in each book. The clues are all laid out and there for the solving, although I can never figure out the entire story. While I enjoyed her last two books well enough, the fact that they were standalones made me particularly hungry for a new book in the series, so I think she played her cards well in spacing out her books. The pacing and structure in this one was fantastic; we had changing POV's in the present, but post crime being committed. Then, after about 200 pages, we jump back in time to the week before the crime from another POV that was present for all the shady, criminal components to get the full story. Once caught up, we flip back to present time to finish out strong. Don't let this worry you; it sounds confusing but the narrative flowed flawlessly from first to last page. I simply had to limit my wording as to not give away crucial plot points.
There are so many things I want to say about this book and I could ramble on for days, but I'd rather you just read it and see for yourself. DON'T pick this up as a standalone; your life will be over and you'll be miserable and then I'll have to say I told you so. DO pre-order, place a hold at the library, send your spouse out to grab this for you (because you are clearly too busy reading other amazing books at home to pick it up yourself), heck AMAZON PRIME MOSES' BEARD OUT OF THIS because it's that good. If you are wanting to start the Will Trent series, the first book is called Triptych, but I would recommend going all the way back to Blindsighted (Grant County #1) to fully appreciate the hard work KS has gone to in creating such deep, flawed, relatable characters. I think most fans of the series will be extremely pleased with The Kept Woman; I'll go back to my Karin Slaughter hangover that I get whenever there are no more KS books to read. :(

INTENSE!
The Kept Woman is a dark, gripping, suspenseful, mind-bending psychological thriller about a tangled web built from secrets, lies, murder, and vengeance.
This was my first Will Trent book. I normally wouldn’t start a series out of order, but I had just finished reading an awful thriller, and I was reluctant to read another one. I knew Karin Slaughter wouldn't let me down, so I jumped into this series, and I am glad that I did!
I was familiar with Sara, but Will and the other cast of characters were new to me. It didn’t take me long to love all of them. And then there is Angie. What I can say about Angie? Angie is one f*cked up character. I hated her, but also found her fascinating. Oh, and that last sentence, it should have made me cringe, but instead, it had me smiling one wicked smile!
I can't wait to catch up on this series!

Last year's Karin Slaughter stand alone Pretty Girls book left me kinda disappointed. (A whole ton of people loved it so back off)...But this book.
Karin Slaughter has long been one of my favorite authors and this series along with the Grant County ones are a reason why. I've always said that her characters seem so real to me. Maybe because I've spent so much time with them. But crap, I still mourn Jeffery.
You don't even have to love Slaughter's characters. Case in point, this book. Angie Polaski Trent.
I hate her. I LOATHE her. But I can't look away from her.
And she is back in Will Trent's life again. Not by his choice, he had been investigating a basketball star for a horrific rape and the guy walked. People were paid off and money talks.
Then a ex-cop who everyone knows was dirty ends up dead in that very basketball players abandoned construction site. And Angie's blood is found there, along with her gun.
There is so much blood that Sara (the ME and Will's girlfriend) would find it amazing if the woman would still be alive.
Angie was a cockroach. She left disease wherever she went and nothing could destroy her.
But it's Angie we are talking about. The woman who leaves when she wants, leaves men and women hating her, and breaks in to Will's home to take personal items from Sara just to mess with her. She just hates seeing Sara and Will together. Will can not be happy.
I will say this is purely Angie's book. You get a glimpse of why she is the way she is. If there even is an explanation for that. Sara does come off kinda Mary-Sue like because I think we are seeing mostly from Angie's viewpoint. But I still ate this book up.
I love to hate this woman, Lena from the Grant County books was a close second on a female villain/anti-hero but Angie just shines. I never felt that tad bit of protective instinct for Lena that I feel for Angie. Even when I still kept my fingers crossed that someone would finally off her.
This book could be read as a stand alone. BUT I'm not telling you to do that. I love these characters. I love knowing their history, I love knowing how imperfect they all are. Plus it's my all time favorite series ever, and I HATE series.

It was just AMAZING and best one in this series.

I just love this series! It is my favorite series. I the characters especially Will Trent. This book is the best one and will probably end up being my favorite of 2017. I feel that when an author does so well with the character that it really makes up the book to be fantastic.
In the two weeks since medical examiner Dr. Sara Linton joined her lover, agent Will Trent, on the payroll of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, everything’s been fine, except of course for Will’s uneasy sense that Angie Polaski, the long-estranged wife he just can’t get around to divorcing, will never let him alone. How right he is. A Glock found near the scene of a grisly murder is quickly traced to Angie. Now Amanda Wagner, the GBI deputy director who mercilessly rides Will and his partner, Faith Mitchell, wants to know what Angie had to do with the death of Dale Harding, a thoroughly miserable human being who was a detective with the Atlanta PD. The case is already a minefield: the murder scene, drenched in blood that isn’t Harding’s, is the construction site of the All Star, a nightclub owned by basketball star Marcus Rippy, who’s well-known to Will as the man who raped Keisha Miscavage and, thanks to his feral manager, Kip Kilpatrick, and an army of lawyers, walked away two weeks ago without so much as a summons. Wow! This one had the pacing of a runaway train, revelations fast and furious. Will Trent and Sara Litton, trying to make a go of it, both scarred from past events. Bodies found in a warehouse, one an ex-cop, another an apparent drug addict. A warehouse that is owned by an very rich, talented basketball star who was recently the main suspect in a rape case. But the big zinger, is that it all related back to Will's wife, the very troubled and troubling Angie.
Amazing back stories to the characters, and a big connection to the past. The above the law status of elite athletes who live in and of another world. Handlers, fixers, manipulators and those who will do anything to keep the money train rolling. Secrets, one big one, and a stellar ending. Some graphic violence but a riveting story.

I am glad I did a re-read prior to starting the new one. Honestly, I had forgotten a lot of what had happened! Yes, Angie is still Cunty McCuntface! Will and Sara - happy ever after? We will have to wait and see, I guess. Fantastic writing! Brilliant author.

He is vulnerable, he is sweet, he had a fucking horrible childhood. He wants to overcome it. He has a past with probably the cuntiest fucking cunt that I have ever read about. Angie POLASKI Yeah, let's call her Polaski, cos, in no way does she deserve the name TRENT. Jeez, I hate her - she has no redeeming features.. NONE. AT. ALL. She is not happy, so if she is not happy, then the people in her life should not be happy. Especially Special Agent Will Trent, with whom she has had an association with for over 30 years.
I won't go on about her because she just makes my blood fucking boil.
Had we enough of Will and Sara? Not sure. Yes, we had to have the storyline and, sorry, at times you had to suspend the disbelief.... c'mon? Really? But, it is KS, so I can suspend that disbelief and go with it.
We are defintely going to have another book. Gotta find out how Cunty McCuntface fares out.

OK, let me start by stating that this book was worth the long oh so long wait, it goes without saying that this is Angie's book "hands down" and how she skull-fucked everyone in it , she really did outshine the lot of them with that twisted dark mind of hers, it was beautiful how she pulled their strings and how well they danced to her horrifying mocking tune,I really like Polanski, she makes Leena look like a school girl plus she owns her shit and makes no excuses . Poor Trent he was like a broken toy throughout the novel, and Sara: she really fell flat this time acting all weepy and shit and making every fucking thing about her feelings, if only a lipstick and a bottle of perfume could undo her like this, imagine her freakout if she finds out about her laptop... Man : think of her emails and how she's sharing every personal thing with her sister without Trent knowledge , her patients records, her finances ... etc she's giving her nemesis a lot of ammunition ,I really admire Angie: look at how much she accomplished while being: injured, weak, poor and on drugs, imagine what she can do now that she's free and rich, i simply cannot wait. Angie/Trent duo would make a lot of grim sense if fucking Trent decides to grow a pair and behave like a real man, and to listen to his animal side more often so he can match Angie's sadistic and gaming mind .... Looking forward to the next book ,I hope the wait wouldn't be in term of years.

This is the 8th book in the Will Trent series by author Karin Saughter. I have read several of the books in this series, although not in order and enjoyed them all so I was not surprised that I also enjoyed this one. Extremely well written and the series just gets better and better for me as I get more familiar with the characters, I only wish I had read them in order.
This novel focus's on Will's wife Angie Trent with the first half featuring Will and Sarah investigating an Atlanta crime scene with the body of an ex-cop. Bloody footprints leading away from the scene reveal that another victim - a woman - has left the scene and vanished into thin air. The warehouse where the body is found is connected to a high profile athlete who is a local hero protected by the world's most expensive lawyers. Special Agent Will Trent has spent the last six months investigating the athlete for the brutal rape of a woman. Will's wife Angie appears to be involved but how much and why.
The second half of the novel is told from Angie's perspective who is very difficult to like and gives Will plenty to think about. It all leads to a breath taking conclusion.
Another excellent novel from Karin Slaughter.

Another outstanding installment of the Will Trent series, The Kept Woman is a riveting mystery and an astute commentary on the hubris of professional athletes in our society. Will has just come off of a frustrating case in which a basketball player has been unindicted for the rape and assault of a young woman. Now, he has been catapulted into the murder of a former Atlanta police officer. He was a dirty cop, but he is one of them. Also, Angie, his terrible ex-wife, is back with a vengeance. If there's anybody I hate more than Lena from the Grant County series it's Angie. She's Hell on wheels and twice as mean, but Will still cares for her or does he? Sara will soon find out.

I was prepared to wait until September to have this book on my Kindle but one of the best things happened. My good friend Mo was lucky enough to meet Karin Slaughter in person at a book signing in Delft, The Netherlands and she had the book signed for me and mailed it off. Look at this!!! I was so excited that I would get the chance to read it sooner than the release date here in the states.
It is always challenging to write a series that will keep the reader engaged and invested in the main characters and where the story will take them. I have loved the Will Trent Series from the beginning and after reading TKW I still do.
The Kept Woman is the 8th book in this series. Karin Slaughter took her time with each character, molding them in such a way that you continue to love who they are (with one exception) and accept, albeit with frustration at times the changes that take place along the way. This plot was written in such a way that you know she was careful with the way it would unfold. With each chapter the reader experiences suspicion, anger, frustration, hopelessness. The reader also experiences an understanding, acceptance, relief and happiness. At least this is how I felt.
When I finished Unseen I truly had no idea where KS was going to take this series. Will, Sara, Amanda and Faith had already gone through so much. So I decided to go back through my highlights of Unseen to get a feel for things again. I’m putting a few in a spoiler for those that may read the book.. Boy, these came to be true in TKW.
While I loved this book I hated Angie, aka Cunty McCuntface, with every fiber of my body. She is toxic, dangerous and evil. I FUCKING LOATHE HER. It didn’t matter who you were no one was free from her hatred. It ran through her blood. Here is my fuck you. Come on karma!
What happens in TKW only strengthens the hold that Angie has on Will. Will Trent is one hero I will not soon forget. He is perfectly damaged and fragile in a way most men are not. Not only does he have physical scares from his past he has emotional scares as well. We find how deep these scares go when Will is faced with making some decisions that he won’t be able to change. But can they be forgiven?
As the shit storm is swirling around all of them Sara’s resolve starts to crumble. She is a strong woman but there are some things that are hard to forgive and forget. Would she ever be at the center of Will’s world? Was she already? Will’s self-preservation has taken a new turn. Where will these two be when the dust settles.
The Kept Woman was another FANTASTIC installment in The Will Trent Series. Beyond Will and Sara, I loved Amanda. She is brilliant. I loved Faith. She is cunning. I love that these two women have Will and Sara’s back.
I loved the last chapter in this book. Waiting for the next installment will be painful but I’ll manage. I’ll be conjuring up all sorts of possible scenarios as to what will happen next but I’m sure they will be wrong.

An investigation into a murder scene at a warehouse brings Amanda Wagner, Faith Mitchell, Will Trent and GBI’s newest medical examiner, Sara Linton to the scene. What they find is a WHOLE Lot of blood, along with a woman’s purse and lipstick, among other things. All of which are identified as being someone very well known to the team. Can you say ruh roh?
As if Will and Sara haven’t been through enough.
There are characters you hate and then there are characters who can somehow make you feel sympathy for them, even though they are truly despicable. For me, Angie Polaski is one of those characters. I will admit, (shh!) that since I don’t love Sara Linton as much as everyone else, I found Angie’s antics to be, well shall we say, amusing at times. (Disclaimer - Please note that I would never find this behavior to be amusing, funny or appropriate in real life). That said, the dynamics between Will, Angie and Sara is pure dynamo! Brilliantly done Karin Slaughter!
Relationships aside, the investigation takes crazy twists and turns that I didn’t see coming - all of which were absolutely riveting and completely gripping. This character driven thriller has everything. Drama, twists and turns, intensity, love, loss and redemption. A fabulous read that I highly recommend (though I suggest reading the entire Grant County series and the entire Will Trent series first).

This was a stunner! My second read in the series. What's not to love about Will Trent?! ....and Angie, Angie, Angie, this woman is a tick under my skin.
Will is called to investigate a murder at an abandoned warehouse. He soon finds out the victim is an ex cop and the warehouse belongs to a famous local basketball player, Marcus. Marcus has escaped raped charges in the past and has a high profile lawyer on his side. There's a lot of blood at the scene and it looks like there's another victim. Somewhere. Bloody footprints are found leaving the scene. Medical examiner and love interest, Sara joins the team. Who left the scene? Was it the killer? What do they know? The first part of the book is in the details about finding answers to those questions while the second part is told by Angie. I liked hearing her side because I really don't like her, but maybe I softened a little. It was a fleeting second. I'm back to not liking her. It's a rapid fire read and the low key romance developing with Will and Sara has me anticipating the next in this series.

The Kept Woman is the 8th installment of Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series. Slaughter is also the author of the Grant County series and many standalone best sellers.
Will Trent is an agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) which is the state’s version of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Will is the product of the Atlanta Children’s Home being orphaned as an infant. He never found a permanent home and was abused in the homes he was fostered to. The foster care system was a revolving door for Trent, but he clearly yearned for a permanent home. In the end he aged out of the system.
While in the system he met Angie Polaski. Angie did not come into the system until she was eleven when her mother ODed and ended up in a coma. Angie was abused physically and sexually by men her mother knew and her pimp. She was also abused when she went to various foster homes. Angie later became a law enforcement officer for the Atlanta Police Department, (APD). In this story she has left the APD and is working for a sports management organization.
Will and Angie’s relationship has been one of the major conflicts in the series, so far. They were close in the system and looked out for each other. Angie has always been able to control Will. She does not always have his best interest in mind. She looks out for Angie, only. Oh, Will and Angie are married. They don’t live together now and Will has another love interest, Sara. Angie was not a model wife and would often leave their home for days, weeks, and months at a time. Of course, Angie does not like Sara and has become to her the “ex from hell.”
Sara is a medical doctor who has worked as a pediatrician and as a medical examiner. She is now working for the GBI. What a mess. She has been called to a murder scene by Amanda Wagner the Deputy Director of the GBI along with Will and his partner Faith. The murder scene is at building owner by a professional athlete that is part of the organization that Angie works for. This athlete has been recently investigated by Will in regards to a rape charge.
There is a lot going on in this story. The GBI has to figure out what happened and who is involved in this murder. There was a lot of blood but it did not come from the dead former APD officer that is the victim. He also worked for the sports management organization. Angie is involved with this case and we find out that she has a daughter, Jo, which she abandoned shortly after birth, never even wanting to hold her. Angie was sixteen when she had Jo.
The story is fast moving and problematic. As you can probably see there are a lot of conflicts. The characters are interesting and have been consistent in each book, so far. I am hooked on the characters, so I will continue the series. A lot of twists and turns. This is not a great “Who Done It,” since you can easily figure out what happened and who did it.
I like most of the characters. Angie is such an antagonistic person you want to hate her, but she is germane to the story.
Highly recommended.

First, I would like to say I have never read a book in larger print and my eyes freaking LOVED IT! LOL
WARNING: Graphic scenes-- Murder, domestic abuse, rape, drugs, pedophilia, prostitution, incest ((not usually my type of read but I tried this out and it can def be real life to someone and plot was good))
"It's never going to catch up with her, is it?" He said, "The people she hurts, The damage she does."
"Trust me, Will. Life always makes you pay for your personality." Amanda gave him a rueful smile. "It catches up with her every single second of the day." (PG 669)
So this is my first Karin Slaughter book and I thought she was all hype and I hate high praise bc I get annoyed if the book sucks but I am happy to say with this book her hype is real.... I read all 700 pages in 3 days. It was twisty, turny and when you thought you had the plot figured out Slaughter would throw more in there to laugh at your sureness.
It is a police thriller with loads of suspense and breath holding surrounding Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and his team but also his personal life; the latter he is trying to cut ties from to start a new happy life. His ex-police officer ex-wife gets into some trouble he can't figure out. While he tries to solve the murder of an ex-cop/bad cop more unfortunate things start happening. I hated most of the characters but they belonged in the story... I needed to know karma was near as I kept turning the pages... The plot was so good I couldn't stop reading it. It all flowed together nicely. I saw the scenes in front of me like I was watching it. I will be reading more of her work. Hopefully all her books are this mesmerizing....

I've been a fan of Karin Slaughter's books for quite awhile. In all honesty, I've liked some better than others, but I've never felt like I wanted to give up on this author. And I still don't!
This book portrays Will, Sara, Amanda, Faith, and Angie as accurately as they have ever been. I got to know Angie better in this book, and I still don't like her. I'm glad the author hasn't tried to change my opinion with this book. Lots more history and background on some of these characters made this an excellent addition to the series. I know there are some who find the violence in Slaughter's books to be too much, but this does not bother me. If you're already a fan, I think you'll be happy with this book. For new readers, I recommend starting with the first in the Grant County series in order to get to know these characters and to know what Slaughter is capable of doing with them.

Karin Slaughter slays once again! Terrible pun, I know, but true. I love Karin Slaughter books. As in I love, love, love them!!!!! I love her characters. I love that they are damaged, make bad choices, make good choices, use terrible judgement, risk all for those they love, they feel jealousy, they take chances, they screw things up, they make amends, and they feel real emotions. Plus, I love a little grit with my murder mystery. Slaughter can be counted on to being the blood, the carnage, and raw emotions that come with the territory of writing about murder, police procedures, FBI investigations, etc. . I have a background in forensics and I love the research she puts into her books. From the language, the technique, crime scene analysis, etc. She does her homework and it shows in her books.
Keep in mind that this is Number 8 in her Will Trent Series. If you have not read Karin Slaughter, what the hell is wrong with you? Seriously? Get over it already and dive in already. By dive in, I mean start with her Grant County series and when they ends, begin reading the Will Trent series. That will give you all the background you need. Some books can be read as stand alone books, some not so much. Many of her books do nicely as stand alone novels, but why read out of sequence when you can binge read Slaughter (that is what I did).
The book begins with a body being found in an abandoned warehouse and Will Trent is called into investigate and his girlfriend, Sara Linton is called in as the medical examiner. Hence begins the tale. This book weaves story-lines together and Will's past and present collide. The usual characters are in this book. Ones we loves and ones we love to hate (Angie). Revelations come out during the investigation that threaten to harm relationships - both personal and professional.
There is a lot of drama and of course, because this is a Karin Slaughter book, there will be murder, blood, drama, mystery, and investigation. Slaughter is great with character development which is why I feel strongly about readers starting with the Grant County series and then tackling the Will Trent books. Through both series we see both Will Trent and Sara Linton grow and evolve. We also see those who are close to them grown and change as well. It is well worth the journey.
I am choosing to not tell too much about the plot. What I will say is what I have said over and over and over again. Karin Slaughter is at the top of her game. She is not slowing down and her writing is consistent, strong and captivating.
Now what to do with myself until the next Slaughter book comes out...

Hence begins the tale. This book weaves story-lines together and Will's past and present collide. The usual characters are in this book. Ones we loves and ones we love to hate (Angie). Revelations come out during the investigation that threaten to harm relationships - both personal and professional.
There is a lot of drama and of course, because this is a Karin Slaughter book, there will be murder, blood, drama, mystery, and investigation. Slaughter is great with character development which is why I feel strongly about readers starting with the Grant County series and then tackling the Will Trent books. Through both series we see both Will Trent and Sara Linton grow and evolve. We also see those who are close to them grown and change as well. It is well worth the journey.
I am choosing to not tell too much about the plot. What I will say is what I have said over and over and over again. Karin Slaughter is at the top of her game. She is not slowing down and her writing is consistent, strong and captivating.
Now what to do with myself until the next Slaughter book comes out...

I really reading Karen slaughter books.This one took a while to read as it's a book now find it easier to read on my kindle. Angie is back causing trouble again.A murder is Angie involved? Another great read looking forward to reading more of her books.

Let me begin by saying this is NOT a standalone book. It is the culmination of all the books in this series that preceded it in defining Will Trent & Angie Polaski’s relationship. It’s complicated and you’ll only understand the extent of that from the earlier stories.
Will Trent and his partner Faith Mitchell are summoned to a murder scene involving a retired police detective. It gets dicey when they realize the warehouse is owned by the agency that represents a professional athlete Will just spent months trying to convict of rape. Then it takes a dive when they determine the blood at the scene doesn’t belong to the dead cop but to someone tied to Will. The ride becomes precarious from then on and never lets up.
I’ve waited for this confrontation between Will and his estranged, crazy wife Angie for a long time and it surpassed anything I could have imagined. I finally understand his bizarre connection to her and, surprisingly, her extreme cruelty to him. Of course, it all is steeped in their shared and unshared pasts. There are revelations on top of revelations and you’ll need to buckle up to keep up. The subterfuge is stunning and there were times my jaw dropped at the truths that emerged.
This story just amazed me. There were moments when I wanted to smack Will and felt like he wasn’t the man I thought him to be, only to embrace him once more. Amanda shows her skills and toughness once again, still leaving me with my competing admiration/disdain of this woman. Kathleen Early narrates it perfectly, knowing how to stay out of the way of the story and giving us perfect characterizations of Angie, Amanda, Will & Sara. The murder mystery was even more complicated but it all ties together at some point. I’m glad I delayed listening to this story now that the next book is scheduled for release next summer. It was so much more than I ever anticipated and was 16 hours of listening that felt like 8.

Karin Slaughter has such a knack for writing books that make you want to keep reading until you’re finished. This book was such a page turner. A mix of love, deceit, rape, beatings, pimps, murder, and the price fame gives you. If you like heart pounding, page turning, heart stopping drama... then read this. Fantastic book. Was hoping the ending would have been a little different but still enjoyed it :)

My only complaint with this book, if you can call it that, is that in bringing Will's wife Angie to the fore, Slaughter has overshadowed the other characters to such a degree that I might never think about them the same way again. She's like a massive black hole, swallowing the space in the book and acting as the driving force of everyone else in it. Or, to put it another way, she's the one in bright, vivid colour and anyone else is insipid, pale nothings. Honestly, the metaphors could go on and on. She's real in that jagged, hateful sense- like a character straight out of The Wire or a true crime book. I despised her from the first moment of her page time to the last. A feeling of sick fascination alongside a gratefulness that I don't know anyone like her. Still, I understood her, especially as more and more of her life was revealed. I can't even say that I even hold some of the things she does against her. She's resourceful, crazy, and vicious as a junkyard dog. But she makes sense. So much so that her opinions on other characters started to edge into my own. I mean, Sara Linton is a bit of a wet weekend, right? All a little too nice and emotional and prissily perfect. Bleh. I get it Angie, I really do...
As well as the blindingly awful person that is Angie, there was, of course, a twisty plot and drama and death and surprises etc etc. For me, it was all just a stage for her to stand on.
So whether that means Slaughter deserves a bravo, or not, is uncertain. She can write the hell out of bad women, that's for sure. I can't wait to see some more of that.

The Kept Woman is the 8th in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter and it was amazing! Such a big book, but the pages raced by. This psychological thriller is surrounded by excellent characters - ones I've grown to love - and with that many twists and turns, the pace didn't stop. Highly recommended - but don't start here!

The murder of an ex-cop brought everyone to the site of the abandoned and derelict warehouse, including Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, his boss Amanda and his partner Faith, as well as medical examiner, Sara Linton – who also happened to be Will’s girlfriend.
But this investigation wasn’t just about the visible dead body – there was far too much blood for that. It was also about the person who had been there before they all arrived and was obviously losing bucket-loads of blood. If they didn’t find her soon, there would be another body – and a much bigger investigation. With the building being linked to a recent case of Will’s, and the missing body linking to his past, Will and his colleagues were set to endure more chaos and havoc than ever before.
What would be the outcome? Was there devastation and anguish just around the corner? How would Will cope with this latest trauma?

Karin Slaughter's 2016 mystery thriller is filled with determined detectives, gruesome crimes and some downright nasty characters. Of course, I enjoyed it all! I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but KS provides enough illusions to Detective Will Trent and his estranged wife, Angie's backstory that I never felt lost. Angie Polaski might just be one of the most fascinating characters as she straddles the murky waters of a good investigator/terrible wife. As for Will Trent, he's the big draw(it is his name headlining the series title) but he came across to me as too perfect. More like a caricature than an actual human being. On the other hand, it is fiction and it still didn't prevent me from enjoying the story.

Generally I adore Karin Slaughter and the Will Trent series. The one character from this series that I cannot stand, whose very presence in the book is like nails on a chalkboard, is Angie - Will Trent's wife and a semi/sort of vice cop as well. She is a horrible person, a terrible cop, a "monster" as she proves to be in this book. The fact that the entire book is about Angie makes it difficult for me to give a fair review because I simply can not stand her as a character.
That said - it was a good read, it is typical Karin Slaughter writing style and in this book we, who are avid followers of Will Trent, get a lot of deep background on both Angie and Will and their past as kids in the system. It did not change my opinion of Angie - is it obvious? :/
If you follow the series then this really is a "must read." If you like Karin Slaughter but don't really care about Will Trent/Sarah/Angie and their triangle then skip this one and read one of her stand alone novels. Cop Town is MUCH better.

So you guys all know I'm a romance reader at heart. I crave reading about love stories. I want to feeeeeeel all the feels, I want to swooooooon and squeeeeee over the sweetness (yes, the extra letters were needed for emphasis), I want my heart to break a little, then be put back together. BUT. I also sometimes need a mental breather. Y'know?
Sometimes you just need to hit refresh mentally and emotionally in my experience as a reader. And I accomplish this by stepping outside of my usual happy book place and reading a book from another genre. My second favorite genre to romance is thrillers and mysteries so today, when I was feeling the need for a palate cleanser, I read this book.
Two years back, I read another psychological thriller/mystery by this author that I was really impressed with called Pretty Girls (my review) and what I was most struck by was how STRONG a writer Karin Slaughter was. Like seriously. She immediately went on my list of authors to read more of and so back when this book was released I bought a copy and it has been just waiting for the perfect mood to read it. That turned out to be today for me.
This book is basically a murder mystery. It's a complex whodunnit that almost feels like... okay, imagine if a Criminal Minds were made into a movie but was presented in a book formate. Lol. Make sense? It's an intricate story with a lot going on but in a mystery that just made it that much more interesting because honestly I had no idea who dunnit at all and I loved that it kept me guessing.

I found this to be an addictive, compelling, intriguing story that was constantly evolving and bringing new developments into the light alone with little twists that would pop up to spiral the story in a new direction. I also really like her storytelling style. Her books are very informative -- they don't assume you know anything so you're never confused, but they also don't bore you with needless explanations. Instead they present something, explain it, and move forward. Her characters are intelligent and perceptive, and the mystery is well crafted. There were a couple slower parts to the story but for the most part I was deeply engrossed and wanted to keep on reading.
You can read this book as a complete standalone. I learned (after I started reading it) that it's also part of the Will Trent series but honestly you can read this alone and don't need to know anything else to understand this book.
I know this isn't my usual review style, but it's also not my usual genre of choice. The more I thought about reviewing this book the way I normally do it, the more I realized that no matter what I said, I'd be giving something away so all in all, I think it boils down to this:
Whether you're either a romance reader looking for something different to read or a thriller novel lover, I recommend checking this book out if you're in the mood to read a really solid, well written murder mystery!
Rating: 4-4.5 stars! Contemporary Thriller/Mystery, can standalone.

“It is over.”
What an incredible ride! My heart was thumping in my throat.
It's so easy to hate Angie. In my opinion, there's nothing redeemable about her. Karin tries to humanize her but she fails big time. Angie is full of bad decisions and terrible actions. She enjoys hurting Will in a despicable manner. I certainly don't feel sorry for her. She had a crappy past but she had Will in her life. She CHOSE to push him aside over and over again. Now that Will is with Sara, she's jealous but she has nobody to blame but herself. Will was more than enough to fill her emptiness yet she didn't want him. The things she has done to Will and Sara and the way she thinks about Will makes her a monster.
“Needy bitches like Sara want the white picket fence and the kids in the yard. How would that be, having a bunch of little monsters with your fucked-up genes inside of them? Loser retards like you who can’t read their own fucking names.”

Ok, I got sidetracked by my complete distaste for this woman. She's a manipulator and a psychopath.
Back to the story.
The team is called to the scene of a crime. An ex-cop is found dead in a soon-to-be new nightclub by a very prominent basketball player, Marcus Rippy. A basketball player who recently was investigated by Will for rape. He got away with good lawyers and by paying the witnesses. Will knows he's guilty but he couldn't prove it since Marcus's wife gave him an alibi.
The nightclub not only has one dead cop. The room is full of type B blood everywhere. Whoever is hurt, must be dying. It's up to the GBI to figure it all out. Hopefully, they are not too late.
If you read my earlier reviews, you know Sara is my favorite character. She's nice, patient and she understands Will. She supports him and she's the only women in his life who doesn't mistreat him.
And who would have thought that Sara could be such a romantic? The things she typed to Tessa were all too cute.
“When he holds me in his arms, all I can think is that I want this to last forever.”
Faith won't let his partner down. She'll do anything to find out about the missing victim. She cares for Will and she knows he's not seeing clearly in this case.
Amanda Wagner, Will's boss, show us her most vulnerable side to date in The Kept Woman. She's concerned about Will and Faith. She gives them great advice. She doesn't want them to make her mistakes.
“Don’t let this job turn you off men, Faith.”
“I picked you. Faith picked you. Sara picked you. Let that be enough. Let yourself accept that you’re worth it.”
The Kept Woman was fantastic. The only problem is that I'm in a huge book hangover. I need another Will Trent book now.
I can't finish my review without talking about Will. A smart guy who doesn't think he deserves love in his life. A part of him is always terrified of being left alone or push away. His dyslexia making him think less of himself. Just one more reason to hate Angie. Sara is perfect for him and I know he knows it.
“I understand that you need time, but you need to understand that I am never, ever going to let you go. Not ever.”

Looking at the title, The Kept Woman, I seriously thought this was Sara Linton's story so imagine my shock when I read this bit.

Oh yes. The
IS DEFINITELY BACK and it goes without saying that she definitely played her role as a c()nt really well.

She stole the show and no matter how I detested her because the way she f*cked everyone over and how she let every character played her game and ran round circles, I have to admit, it was PURE GENIUS.

Will Trent, whom I viewed as a very strong, perceptive and smart hero had shown weakness and confusion here. He even crumbled in this installment.
But no matter because, Will,
still.
Our confident Dr Sara Liston was no exception either.
From harassment notes to her stolen lipstick - yes, Polaski is a real piece of work that she didn't just steal it but uses it at the same time. Quite alarming, yes, but what's truly unnerving was that she had gained UNlimited access on Sara's laptop. Seeing and reading all patient's information, her emails esp the ones she sent to her sister revealing her innermost feelings.
I was forever waiting for them to find out about it but it didn't happen and I was very disappointed.
I can't wait for the next installment.
If Angie can pull all these whilst she was severely disadvantaged because of injuries, yes, games after games after games - so so SO deliciously good, what more when she's not.
I hope the next book isn't the last one and it will be about Will Trent manning up, facing Polaski and bringing her down.
This story makes your brain work.. I was forever analysing. Just when I thought I had things figured out, it would take off in another course.

Our confident Dr Sara Liston was no exception either.
From harassment notes to her stolen lipstick - yes, Polaski is a real piece of work that she didn't just steal it but uses it at the same time. Quite alarming, yes, but what's truly unnerving was that she had gained UNlimited access on Sara's laptop. Seeing and reading all patient's information, her emails esp the ones she sent to her sister revealing her innermost feelings.
I was forever waiting for them to find out about it but it didn't happen and I was very disappointed.
I can't wait for the next installment.
If Angie can pull all these whilst she was severely disadvantaged because of injuries, yes, games after games after games - so so SO deliciously good, what more when she's not.
I hope the next book isn't the last one and it will be about Will Trent manning up, facing Polaski and bringing her down.
This story makes your brain work.. I was forever analysing. Just when I thought I had things figured out, it would take off in another course.

I received a free copy of The Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter from Goodreads for my honest review.
I absolutely love Karen Slaughter as an author. I plan on reading more of her books after reading this one. This book is absolutely amazing, mysterious, with secrets, lies, murder and more. I have not read Karen Slaughter's previous book in this series but I had no problem keeping up with the story line. Absolutely wonderful suspense novel!
