As someone who wrestles with depression from time to time, this was very helpful. It's always eerie yet refreshing hearing, or in this case reading, another Christian going through similar issues. Some of the advice shared I had learned on my own while others I had not considered or had forgotten. Despite the book's sense of scatter-brain or loss of focus in the beginning chapters, this is a graciously short and edifying read. I'd go as far to say it's one every church ought to read.

Encouraging!!!

I have read several books dealing with the issue of depression. As a Christian that struggles with depression, I found the application suggestions manageable and encouraging. I also appreciated Mr. McNaghten's advice for helping depressed individuals to be sound advice. Too many times have I felt condemnation and judgement from those that I felt should have been on my side. This is a quick read that packs a ton of helpful advice into a small space.

Conservative commentary on depression

Nice book that discusses an individual's experience with depression. A little bit conservative for my taste but still good as a reference and great source to get good practical advice.

First, a disclaimer that the author shares his personal experience, rather than a professional opinion. If you or someone you know is depressed, seek professional advice in addition to reading this book. Having said that, I greatly appreciated McNaughten sharing his deeply personal experience in spite of the shame that often accompanies mental illness. Since so many misunderstand depression, even well-meaning Christians, this book is a necessary reminder that depression can strike anyone, and that likewise, anyone can rise from it. McNaughten shares practical tips for soul-searching and self-care, and resources for relatives and churches. I especially appreciated his bold call for churches to address mental illness.

I was curious to read this because I often work with clients that are struggling with depression and belong to a faith group (most commonly Christian). I desperately wanted this to be a good read so I would be able to recommend it as a resource, but it fell incredibly short. The experience was anticipated to be specific to the individual writing the text, but for me, it was incredibly conservative and so heavy on the Christianity that the messages regarding the author’s struggle with depression were lost in translation.

Hope for your illness

I enjoyed this book very much. It was to the point, and gave an honest look at depression. I suffered with it when I was younger. I also liked that the people in church are human and we need to remember that jesus saved us from the grave. It's all about Love. Loving each other as he loves us .

Good starter book for someone looking for a way out of depression without judgement being placed upon them.

It's an easy read not a lot of jargon. It offers much needed and helpful Bible passages. There are resources and self-help suggestions with out the author pretending to have a PhD.. I found the book both comforting and resourceful.

Great read. Someone close to me is dealing with depression. This person has a strong faith in Jesus. I admit I wasn't sure exactly how those two fit together. Jason's transparency and his willingness to tell his full story has given me much more insight. Great read!
