The Phoenix Candidate

Rate this book
Fans of Scandal and House of Cards will love Grace Colton... Congresswoman Grace Colton is the most famous woman in politics—and the loneliest—until a drawling, sexy stranger offers her one night: no strings and no regrets. And it rocks her world.

Grace wakes to an empty hotel room and a phone call. The dark horse for the 2016 presidential election, Senator Shep Conover, is considering her as his vice presidential running mate. But before she can be selected, Grace must be vetted and coached by Shep’s political consultant, Jared Rankin, who already knows too many intimate details about her. He’s Mr. One-Night Stand.

Grace is torn: play nice with Jared to join the senator’s ticket, or play hardball and back the slick frontrunner? Grace must decide where her loyalties lie and if she can trust Jared with her future—and her heart.

Heidi Joy Tretheway is a sucker for campfires, craft cocktails, and steamy romance in books and real life. She sings along with musicals (badly), craves French carbs, and buys plane tickets the way some women buy shoes.

Her first career as a journalist took Heidi behind the scenes with politicians, rock stars, and chefs, all of whom inspire her stories. She writes whip-smart characters who break rules and hearts.

It's a book. It's just words on paper. It came from a mind of a brilliant women but some would say it's words On paper.

This book is far more than words on paper. It's a face paced look into the world of politics.

Your watching an episode of scandal or the west wing but it's so much better. It's fucking sexy and fierce and brilliant.

It's brilliance and phenomenal in black and white. It's growth and maturity. It's the Novel that will break down the walls and bring Heidi to new readers. It's her glory and it's her best work to date

If you asked me to give you one word for The Phoenix Candidate: The Pawn, it would be Supersexysmart! That's a word right? Okay, smart. The word would be smart. Final answer.

It puts erotica in a whole new light. If you need a real substantial story with your dose hot sex, look no further. Trethaway packs quite a political punch into The Phoenix Candidate.

When an anonymous one night stand ends up being the campaign manager for the president hopeful who is looking at you as a running mate...things get pretty muddy, pretty quickly.

That's only a bit of the trouble though, this is D.C. where sabotage and intrigue rule the games. Grace is thrown in the deep end with Jared as her only lifeline...a guy she barely knows and isn't sure she can trust. A man that pushes her buttons, challenges her every way, and makes her heart stutter more than she could have ever expected.

I loved the political plot of this story. It's so different than most romance and erotica titles flooding the market right now. It kept the story happening outside of the bedroom very exciting. I also really liked that Grace really struggled to stay true to herself in a life that is all about gaining the upper hand. Shit...if only we had more politicians like her in Washington.

Where the story lost a little luster, for me, was with Jared. Through most of the book, I didn't trust him, which is probably the point. Not knowing if you should like and trust him adds to the drama of the story. But, even when he did show some relationship stamina, I still didn't find myself on board with him. I couldn't bring myself to believe his interest in Grace. I can't put my finger on it, it's just a feeling that is there. Maybe I'm just a really distrusting person. However, it only makes me want to read the next book even more...to see if he's really a bit shady or if I just need more time with him and Grace.

Regardless of my leeriness towards Jared, this is a great start to what I think will prove to be a very intelligent sexy tale of desire, conspiracy, loyalty and love.

I am not a fan of Political themes in a book but along came Heidi Joy Tretheway who is one of my favourite authors, writing this and I read the synopsis and thought, ooh..... I trust in her writing as I have loved everything she has written then after seeing another favourite author of mine Meghan March raving about it, I hesitated no more!!!

OMFG, straight away no messing about we are in and away, Grace and Jared meeting in a bar. Jared is one hell of a man who like Grace you want to fight against and chuck yourself at his feet at the same time....damn, swoon, yes, anything you say. mmm mm. I need to get into politics right now!!

This is going to be weird to read, but The Phoenix Candidate has the right amount of politics and sexiness to make it HAWT and INTERESTING!

I’ll be honest, the book started out WAY TOO FAST for my liking and lacked the character development in the beginning, but by 30% I was so thoroughly wrapped up in the storyline and wondering what was going to happen next, that I didn’t even realized that author Heidi Joy Tretheway had redeemed herself with her ability to suck me into a story without needing those finer details in her characters. For example, the reader barely knows anything about the main male character, Jared, because he’s in and out of the picture. Grace is the main attraction and the book is in her POV, so we get to learn more about her throughout the book, but not Jared.

Who is Grace Colton? Grace Colton “Phoenix” is a 39 year old Congresswomen from Oregon. She ran for Congress less than a year after a personal tragedy struck her family. She’s considered a “small fish is a big pond”, but her personal story propels her to the forefront of intrigue. Now she’s got both Presidential Candidates vetting her. And more importantly, she has the interest of one of the Presidential candidates political consultants.

Who is Jared Rankin? Jared Rankin is the man behind the scenes. He is Presidential candidate Shep Conover’s personal political consultant. He is in charge of vetting Shep’s potential Vice President running mates. Vetting Grace was his only job, but after reading her file and learning more about her through the paperwork they gathered, intrigue lead to something else. “After I knew your file, I had to know more. I had to know you. That’s why I came to find you.”

Can Grace be in the political campaign of her lifetime to become the next VP, all while lusting after her potential political consultant? Or will that overshadow everything she’s been working to achieve to get to the next level in her political career? Is it something more than just wild sexual attraction, spitfire fighting, and hot make up sex?

Jared and Grace’s sexual tension sizzles off the page right from the first chapter! It was supposed to be a “No names. No stories.” type of relationship between them, but what kind of a story would it be if it ended just after one steamy encounter?

This book caught me by surprise and I loved every minute of it! I’m so glad to see that there will be a BOOK 2 – “The Phoenix Campaign”!!!!

4 “Rising” Stars!

4.5 stars for this scorching hot and wickedly awesome political story!

Oh how I love a good Political Romance story and The Phoenix Connection definitely satisfied my craving. I was hooked from page one and read this in one sitting. I fell in love with this story and the writing of Heidi Joy Tretheway. Grace and Jared are definitely an amazing duo and there was just so much to love about this story.

Grace is our politician and Jared is our political consultant. After meeting and having an amazingly hot no regrets, one night stand, these two end up working together on the dream political campaign. There are so many things I loved about this story that I want to share….First off, you don’t have to love the political arena to fall for this book, but if you do love it this book is a must read. Ms. Tretheway is not only an amazing writer, but she is smart and knows her stuff. I would almost dare to say she has been at least one campaign to have known her material so well. I have to give her big props because some of the information in this book was just written so intelligently. Second thing is the players in this book are adults. They are career minded and mature. If you are looking for a book with thirty/fortysomething year olds who are past the young love stage, oh my, this is definitely a book for you. I loved feeling so connected to this cast of characters and the things that Grace felt about her body and her age were spot on with what women feel at this stage in their lives and it was so refreshing to see it all written so open and honestly on the pages of this story. Grace might be a politician, but she is a woman first and one we can all really relate with. Lastly, this book is off the charts hot. I mean the kind of hot that singes your ereader. It will leave you panting and wanting to find a Jared of you own!

The Phoenix Candidate was just an amazing story for me. It hit all my buttons that I look for in a book and Ms. Tretheway is a fantastic storyteller. The plot twists and turns held me captive to my kindle and kept me wanting for more. I loved that Grace held fast to her convictions and watching Jared’s walls break down only made me love him more. If you are looking for smart, sexy, love story then this is definitely something you won’t want to miss. You’ve got my vote Heidi!

Thank you for allowing me to read the ARC of the Phoenix Candidate. I posted my original review months ago, but somehow it was deleted.

I am reposting again from my GR account.

I enjoyed the story. The political theme was a bit popular this year, but this take by Tretheway was original. I enjoyed how Grace was in the driver seat. I loved the sexy times. I loved how in control she was and yet she needed Jared at the same time. Overall a good read.

Wow. A seriously strong, smart female and a smokin hot alpha male. Just enough politics to not bog down a great romance, plus plenty of hot bedroom scenes. Then there's a frenemy who'd I'd really like to smack. Can't wait for the next book, especially after that preview chapter.

Review:

Politics… Don’t worry I won’t be speaking of specific political issues in this review, or on this book blog like EVER… But I do keep up with what’s going on in my (our) country, and in the world in general. One of my all-time favorite shows was actually a political satire (it just went off the air). And, House of Cards (on Netflix) is like crack to me. However, I’m a Romance reader, not a political thriller or political non-fiction kind of gal. So when I saw that Heidi Joy Tretheway was writing an Erotic Romance with a politically powerful female heroine, I was like I’m in!!!

Grace Colton has been through the tragic loss of her husband and only child about 5-7 years prior. She dealt with her grief by trying to change policy that decreases the chances of what happened to her, happening to other families. She is currently a Congresswoman, who seems sad, but is satisfied with her political career. She is however, not lucky in love. She’s been single and rarely dates since her family was killed.

“Grace, you’re a beautiful woman. You can do whatever you choose, but here’s what I’m offering: No stories. No strings. And no regrets in the morning.”

Enter Jared Rankin. Smokin’ Hot, alpha male, domineering—political consultant. Of course when he propositions Grace at a bar she has no idea who he is or what he does. And its been awhile, so she caves and has a VERY PLEASURABLE one-night-stand with Jared! Only to find out the very next day that he is the one vetting her to be the next Vice President! O.O

They begin a very steamy sexual affair, but we can tell Grace is catching real feelings for Jared. However, Jared has been burned in the past and carries those scares with him. He deals by not getting too close to the women he sleeps with and maintaining full control in any sexual relationship. And—no kissing on the mouth… :-/

I really enjoyed the premise of the story, and the writing was great. I was never confused to what was going on, politically I mean. I don’t think you really have to be into politics to understand it. However, you may enjoy it less if the subject of politics bores you. The focus of the book is on Grace and Jared’s affair, but the setting is political in nature so take that into consideration.

The sex was smokin’ hot, as was Jared so that was fun ;)

However, I did have some issues with it. First, if Jared is vetting Grace for a Vice Presidential nomination, basically grooming her for the role (even picking out her clothes), I kind of thought he should be more concerned with the fact that she just slept with him on the first night. I mean that would be frowned upon, right? (I’m no slut shamer but he was all about image) And he had to know if she would do it with him, she might make a habit of it—although she didn’t. He was also careless with PDA which, again, he should know better… :-/

Second, I knew Grace was supposed to be a strong character, and at times she was. She stuck up for what she believed in, and she was smart. However, she came off weak and naïve at other times. Her character was a bit inconsistent in that regard.

For example, there is this political rival of Shep’s (who is the presidential candidate) who is obviously bad news. Grace feels off around this person, and Jared tells her not to trust them—but she does not listen to herself or Jared. I don’t think you would get that far in politics by not trusting your intuition. Just a guess… And of course she gets burned for this.

Third, the phrase “one fucking minute” was used by Jared as a way of controlling Grace (I think) and he overused this phrase again and again and again. It was like a calm down, take a step back, and listen to me kind of deal—that just didn’t work for me.

Lastly, the Jared no kissing rule. He did not kiss Garce for far longer than I thought he should. And the explanation for this, when we finally get it at the very end was weak. It didn’t really explain the no kissing on the lips deal, to me anyway. It just explained why he was wary of letting a lover have the upper hand. So, FYI don’t expect too many make out scenes LOL!

Overall, I had some issues with The Phoenix Candidate but it did keep me thoroughly entertained. :-))) The next book is a continuation of the story, which I am excited to read. It does not have a cliffhanger, there is just more to the story. And I would love to see how this couple navigates through the challenges ahead!

And if you’ve read it a quick question

Great way to kick off my 2015 reading challenge.

I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley yesterday and gobbled up the pages in about 2 hours. First and foremost, Heidy Tretheway's writing is impeccable. She crafted an exhilarating book within the context of a potential Presidential campaign. The characters were not airheads and the political jargon was appropriate. I could see the influence of Scandal as I read the gritty, intense, aggressive sexcapades.

Now, let's come back down to earth and review some of the flaws. Grace herself was not quite a three dimensional character to me. She's a widow but we don't have any details about how her family died (other than they were shot). She hates being called stupid but the underlying story of her family woes isn't discussed. She's a Congresswoman that won on gun control legislation but we don't hear about the actual legislation she's proposing or any other issue that may matter to her constituency. She exclusively crusades for gun control in a state that has a ridiculously LOW gun homicide rate (Oregon). 0_o She considers herself a badass but her spine turns to spaghetti during almost every encounter she has with Jared. She's supposed to be professional but jeopardizes her entire political career to sleep with the guy who's vetting her? The very same person who makes sure she doesn't have any dirt, is the one she falls for? Giving him tons of potential leverage on her? No dice. While human beings are rather emotional, the political arena, especially with a VP slot on the line, is NOT the place to have a sloppy sexual romp.

And Jared is not much better. We don't get to his background story until the very last pages of the book. He is a master manipulator and borders on cruel as he preys on Grace. And yes, he admits that he did set out to control her. As a political consultant you'd jeopardize your career to play head games with a potential VP candidate? Right. The romance between Grace and Jared is instalove, which irks me to no end. I wanted their romance to be fleshed out, with more details. And I expected Grace to be a ball-busting politician utilizing wit, political capital and strategy. Most of her career advances came about from luck (Boyle overstepping), and mistakes (going on air denouncing Darrow).

The main characters may have had sex on the first night of meeting each other but didn't kiss on the lips until I hit the 75% mark of the book in my Kindle. Even with Jared's reasoning, I was unconvinced of the authenticity in his feelings. At least there wasn't a cliff hanger. Anyway, with all the junk in NetGalley it was refreshing to see a well-written book with a developed plot and believable dialogue. The hangups I mentioned are probably due to my own insanely high standards for romances. Bravo Ms. Tretheway and we'll see what the sequel holds.

One of my favourite authors is Heidi Joy Tretheway, I fell in love with her books after reading Tattoo Thief and througholy enjoying it. The other topic that I enjoy reading in books is politics and The Phoenix Candidate had the perfect mix of politics and romance. This book starts with Grace Colton on a night out with her friends, when she spots a handsome stranger and the two end up having a one night stand. Only for Grace to discover that he is a political consultant working for Shep Conover who is interested in having Grace as his backing which means if he wins the presidential race , she will become Vice President. A long way from being the Congresswoman representing Oregon. In this book, we learn that Grace lost her family in a tragic shooting accident in the local mall where only three died. The Phoenix Candidate follows Grace on her way to becoming a possible VP , keeping up appearances and also the personal side of a maybe relationship with Jared - a man whom kissing is the forbidden thing and the path he won't cross. What will happen when Grace finds out about Jared's past and when she is also targeted and asked to stand by Aaron Darrow - the other person running against Shep Conover - whom will she pick ? The Phoenix Candidate is also a book which shows readers the nasty side of Politics and what happens when you are strong and stand for what is right and how easy one can be swayed if the right offer comes along.

The Phoenix Candidate is also being offered as a Serial of four parts.

Tarah:

The synopsis to The Phoenix Candidate caught my eye. I’m a sucker for a good political drama. I love me some Scandal. #TeamJake Anywho… the tricky bit with these political romances is that the bar is already set quite high. The Phoenix Candidate wasn’t able to knock off the top spot on my list of political hot couples, but it was close.

Grace is a firecracker and she gives hell to Jared. Both caught in the world of politics and ethics, things never seem to simmer. There is always a line drawn and deciding when to cross it can be a struggle. Jared seems to be made for Grace because he not only knows how to take her, but he has mastered how to give it back.

The Phoenix Candidate holds a great level of maturity. Both with its characters and storyline. Heidi wrote this very well and the information wasn’t dumbed down for readers. It’s always refreshing to read about a heroine who can hold her own, but allows her partner to support her all the same. Grace and Jared fight their way to not only win in the world of politicians, but in the world of love. This book is sexually and intellectually delicious. Give it a read.

There should not even be a question of whether you 1 click The Phoenix Candidate or not. Heidi Joy Tretheway is AMAZING. I loved The Phoenix Candidate from the very first page. Grace Colton is easily as enticing as Olivia Pope during the best episode of Scandal.

The whole novel is beautifully written and complex. Every little detail is completely accurate. The truth in the facts about the gun rights and agendas currently happening in the PNW is incredible and with the recent shootings throughout the country I was an emotional mess.

I was a fan of Heidi's Tattoo Thief series but this is so much more than I was ever expecting with its steamy romance scenes and deep characters The Phoenix Candidate blew my mind. It is by far my favorite and in my opinion the best of Heidi's work and I can not wait for more of Grace and Jared.

Heidi, Thank you so much for the opportunity to live 7 hours of my life with Grace and Jared. Also, please start writing faster. I'm not sure how much longer I can live without being able to read The Phoenix Campaign ;)

I really liked this book. I love reading about strong female characters, but I also love reading about alpha males. This book doesn't disappoint on either front. I especially loved reading a book that didn't have the same, tired theme that seems to be the go-to set-up for contemporary/adult romances.

Grace has reasons for her platform, more than most politicians might, and in a moment of power hungry haze, she almost compromises those beliefs.

Jared Rankin. He's dramatic. He's hot. There's a few times I wanted to junk-punch him for being an ass, but he still makes a good BBF.

This book has suspense (drama type, not scary type), humor, and HOT scenes. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Wow. My words to explain how much I love this story are a jumbled mess. I really enjoyed The Phoenix Candidate. Heidi knocked this book out of the park. The characters were raw and it was full of hot, steamy sex that wasn't over done or too far from reality - maybe too far from my reality, but you get my point. ;) I loved the story in between the dirty as well. Grace is a strong, independent woman trying to find her spot in the political world all while exploring the new her. And Jared? Man I'd like to meet him at a bar. Holy hell. He has his douche moments but damn if he isn't book boyfriend worthy. Swoon.

Basically, you better get this book preordered or you'll regret not getting your hands on this 5 star read.

Normally I'm a fan of political themes. Going in I basically thought I was going to get Scandal or a light version of House of Cards. Sadly that was not my experience. Don’t get me wrong the writing was on point and the story flowed like a good read should, the umph just wasn’t there for me. I’m sure 85% of it had to do with the heroine Grace.

Grace Colton won her Congress position in the wake of losing husband and son to gun violence. After securing her seat she has made some great impressions about is now being vetted for a possible VP run. Outside of Capitol Hill, I just didn't find her very interesting, what I did find slightly intriguing was her slight OCD that was never address. It drove me absolutely crazy. While out with the girls she’s approached by this unknown fine specimen that she leaves the bar with for some sexy time after some intense conversation. Little did Grace know this stranger already read her resume.

Literally. Jared Rakin is on an assignment to vet Grace for his employer for a VP, but his research of her has him wanting to know her on a more intimate level. He’s very mysterious and always on the move. Most of the time I couldn't tell where he stood with his feeling for Grace and his job.

The moment these came together things were never the same and I had a few concerns as follows

Jared being a consultant and has the assignment of vetting Grace for his employer - would it be considered sex harassment that he sleep with her? At the very least shouldn’t Jared  feel some type of way about a woman in her position that would willingly go to a stranger’s hotel to get all hot and sexy. That’s a reporter's dream headline “Congresswoman one night stand fetish”.

tpcteaser

Second being in politics I would think Grace would have a game face. See wore all of her emotions on her sleeves. She have zero discretion about the people she trusted. Not to mention she didn’t come of as publically confident in herself. I understand that most people in power or the public eye are privately a mess, but come on keep it together until you get home.

Lastly the flipping kissing on the lips debacle for the life of me I COULD NOT understand why that was such a major issue. I enjoy kissing as much as the next person, but I will obsess over it with someone I just banging. Additionally these two should know that in their position to expect a camera to be everywhere they are why would you continue to have these almost x-rated PDA sessions where anyone walking by can see.

Like with every political theme anything there is secrets, lies, betrayal and of sex. All the main ingredients of awesome drama. The Phoenix Candidate is my first ever experience with Ms. Tretheway and while this was not an awesome read I still enjoyed myself and will stay tune for more political drama. One of the major plus for me is that this story will continue, but I was not left with a cliffhanger. Win - Win.

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick

I became a huge fan of Heidi Joy Tretheway's after reading her Tattoo Thief series. I really enjoyed those books, so I couldn't wait to read The Phoenix Candidate when I heard about it. As much as I loved the TT Series though, I loved the Phoenix Candidate more! This book was fantastic, and I couldn't put it down. Jared and Grace's story was captivating and smoking hot, and I didn't want to do anything else but keep reading. I cannot wait for more of these two, and I highly recommend checking this books out if you haven't already.

After losing her husband and child to a horrible tragedy, Grace Colton is determined to help others to never have to go through what she did. She becomes a US Congresswoman and dedicates her life to serving others. But one night she meets a handsome stranger in a bar and they agree to spend one night together with no last names or stories. She wakes to an empty hotel room and a phone call that changes her life. Underdog for the 2016 presidential election, Senator Shep Conover had decided that he wants to consider adding Grace to his ticket as his VP. When Grace goes to meet Shep, she discovers that his political consultant is none other than her sexy one night stand Jared. As Jared Rankin begins the process of turning Grace into the next VP of the US, he starts telling Grace everything that she must do or change in order to have her best shot. But Grace isn't willing to be anyone's puppet, and soon she must decide who she can trust when it seems that everyone around her has an ulterior motive.

I loved Jared. He was so complicated, and yet he was the one that was constantly simplifying things for Grace. He got her out of her head when she needed it, and he made sure that she took her "One F'ing Minute" to stop thinking and just calm down. I thought that he was sweet and caring, but hard when he needed to be. He didn't sugar coat things, and I really enjoyed the fact that he was always on Grace's side even when he had to give her some tough love. He wasn't afraid to tell her things that others wouldn't, and I thought that he was exactly what she needed. Grace was so strong. She had been through so much and had vowed to do something positive with her life afterwards. On the surface it appeared that she was doing really well, but Jared quickly pointed out that she wasn't really living and he was so right about that. He got Grace to actually start to live again, and I was glad that she was able to let go of her past and the guilt she felt for being happy and wanting things again. I have to say that Grace and Jared were so hot together, and the chemistry was downright explosive between these two from the beginning. Grace and Jared were both so incredibly passionate, and I was glad that they were able to explore their desires together. Jared fulfilled so many of Grace's needs that had never been touched before, and they connected on every single level. But beyond the physical, these two understood one another and I really liked seeing how their emotional connection developed as well. As much as Jared had his life together, he also had a vulnerable side that only Grace was able to reach.

Overall, this book was amazing. It had the perfect balance of romance, sex and politics. This book was interesting in and out of the bedroom and I couldn't wait to read what would happen next. I loved the chemistry and connection between Grace and Jared, but I think that what really made this book so special was what a strong female lead Grace was. I loved her instantly and her strength and integrity were amazing to read about. I will say that while I loved this book and was very satisfied with how it ended, I absolutely cannot wait for more! I am so excited that we are getting more of the story with The Phoenix Campaign, and I can't wait to see how things play out with how things ended here. I will say that with the excerpt from the new book that I read at the end of The Phoenix Candidate, I wasn't surprised by where things are going next. I pretty much saw it coming throughout this story, but I can't wait to read it anyways. Things are about to get even more interesting for Grace and Jared as they continue their relationship and the campaign and I am dying for more of these two! I highly recommend this book, and if you haven't read anything by Heidi Joy Tretheway you are definitely missing out!

Hallelujah! This is the kind of book I like to read. Strong heroine. Strong story that it revolves around something else besides the relationship angst. Strong dominant man. Lots of steam and passion.

Heidi Joy Tretheway has made quite the jump from NA rock star romance to political erotica.

"So, Grace, tell me what you've been doing with your summer."

Oh, not much. Just prepping to be a vice presidential nominee while having a steamy, love-hate affair with a political consultant.

Grace Colton has a mission to try and make America a safer and better place after a horrific tragedy but she's not living. One night out with friends she meets a mysterious man who convinces her to have one night of no strings, no names and no regrets.

After been awoken after a long slumber she wants more but her mystery man disappears until she is approached about the possibility to be a Vice president running mate to only find her mystery man is also the political consultant involved with this possibility.

Even though she has a potential life altering change in her near future, her and Jared (mystery man) can't keep their hands off each other and let me tell you Jared is ALL man and knows how to get what he wants. (Yowza!) As Grace moves forward with this journey, she meets a villain who I knew had a much bigger role in things than on the surface, she also has some personal growth to do if she wants this future. On one hand she wants this opportunity but what will be the cost? As she figures things out her and Jared steam the sheets but Jared has walls which causes conflict for Grace. But she's a strong woman and will move forward and not dwell when life kicks her down. She rises above and moves forward (which I loved by the way as I love a strong independent heroine)

Grace has to be true to herself and that is what will get her where she needs to be.

"You wreck me, Grace. You're truth and beauty. You're power and passion. You're my drug, my clarity. And you are fucking mine."

This book was freakin' great!!!! I loved the story. I loved the fact that yes it was a romance but there was an actual story besides the relationship angst. Yes, there was still angst but it was so much more which gets you sucked into the story and never wanting to leave. I can NOT wait to find out more from Grace and Jared. Argh! April feels too far way.

In the words of Heidi the book she set out to write was "Erotic romance, politics and powerful women." I think she hit the nail on the head. This book was Olivia Pope Scandal, Sarah Palin and Steamy nights read. I have read Heidi Tattoo Thief about Rock Stars which is a very now in kind of genre book right now but The Phoenix Candidate was a fresh new read and I loved it!!!

As a women from Oregon born and raised I am a total fan girl when books are written in my home state. But I loved that its written in Portland. As a Oregon home grown girl I hate when people mispronounce Oregon. If for nothing else I loved how Heidi had her leading lady Grace correct Jared about he mispronounces Oregon. Heidi I could kiss you for that!!

"Ory-gun, I correct him automatically, the way I'd like to correct most of my four hundred and thirty-four colleagues, plus their staff and army of lobbyists. They insist on pronouncing my state like its a polygon.

Grace Colton is a Oregon State Congresswomen who 5 years suffered a tragic loss of her husband and son. After her loss she turned around and turned that into her plate form to run for state office. But her now stale life that revolves around pushing hardcore issues that not many state officials want to touch.

But after a chance encounter with a man that rocked her world and she never thought she see again comes back into her life with a big bang. This man comes back into her life changing her life paths in more than one way.

Lord did I loved Jared but there was always something with his bossiness and secrets. You just want to like Jared but your screaming at Grace to not get so involved when Jared tells her not too.

Grace now in the running to running mate for not one president hopeful but two. But when Jared pushes her boundaries she not sure if she ready for him or the vice presidency. But when he issues are pushed, her loyalty's test and her heart on the line where and with who will she stand.

Grace is a powerful women in a position to push her issues with passion. Jared comes in and makes her question could she take a back seat to someone who will shove her issues to the side. She said Hell No and I loved that. Grace is everything a lot of us want to be. A women who questions everything for someone else but she makes her own decision. She makes a decision want her issues she wants to push and who she wants to work them with. When she put in a hard place with the opposite side she wants the right side to win. If for nothing else she says to see the witch of opponent wife to go down.

I loved a lot of the side characters like Trey. I laughed more than once at a few times. With him being Grace assistant he has passion and a since of humor. When Jared the semi lover and her consultant coming calling.

" He wants me to write "Grace. Can I please speak to you for one fu*king minute?" I told him the swearing was unnecessary, but he said it was " totally fucking necessary." So I told him to have a nice fu*king day."- Trey

In this book you see a powerful women with a sad story who holds her ground to the issues she believes in . You want to root for her in her career ambitions but in her love life. Jared is a guarded man but she wants to fight for him, fight for what they have with a passion she would fight for any of her platforms. But Jared has his own story to tell but he cant until he sure of what he wants to with Grace. Jared thru the story your not sure of his own loyalties and if you can like him. But in the end he has one Grace heart but can he keep it?

" He's my candidate. He's in contention for a piece of my hearts that grows at a breathtaking pace."- Grace

I was surprised at the end of The Phoenix candidate the announcement of more of Jared and Grace story with Shep campaign in The Phoenix Campaign.

Would definitely take you THERE.

some_text

A powerful woman. A man who doesn't take no for an answer. What is in-store in their future?

The beginning of the story already had me panting, and I didn't think panties would be necessary, it would just be a waste of laundry.

You will love Grace Colton.

She became a US Congresswoman after a tragedy struck her life. She made herself a household name after fighting for issues that are controversial. Despite this, she's a lonely woman.

One night, a sexy stranger offers her one night: no strings and no regrets.

some_text

And her world was never the same again. It was one hot night...

some_text

He was someone who wanted control, and she was someone who was ready to give it,

but first,

she needed to make sure to protect her privacy.

Because in the world of politics, every man was on his own. One wrong move, and every single hard work she made will be forgotten, and the only thing people will remember will be her transgression.

She woke up the following day, on an empty bed and a phone-call. One of the candidates for presidential for 2016 is considering her for her running mate. But before she gets selected, she must be vetted and coached by Shep's political consultant, Jared Rankin - her Mr. One-night stand.

some_text

It started the whirlwind in her life. She wanted to make that change, to be the vice-president, but not at the expense of her principles and of her heart. The people should want her because of what she did, not what she projected in the media. And this what made me admire this woman.

She had been through the toughest time, and it's hard when it gets retold every now and then. However, she never forgets why she got elected in the first place, and although she got a little bit side-tracked because of all the people who wanted her on their ticket, in the end, she stood her ground.

And there's Jared, the one who caused her world to tilt. He's an enigma. I wasn't sure if he's the enemy or not, if he really wants what is best for her. But he's so freaking hot, and knows which button to push. He has some issues though, and I wanted to know desperately what his deal was. Although, what he did? Especially at the end of the novel was completely swoon-worthy, and worth the wait.

Strong Heroines, amazing plot, and hot sex = perfect combination to warm your cold night.

4.5 Stars. I almost didn't finish this book. I hated the first chapter. I hated the characters. Could't stand either one of them. And even as the story progressed, I disliked them. I did't understand Grace, hated Jared, couldn't get why she put up with his controlling ways. Then, somewhere around the 60% mark, it clicked for me. I got her, why she made the choices she did, why she was willing to give so much to a selfish, controlling bastard like Jared. The fact that I made it that far into a story where I didn't like the protagonist or the love interest is a testament to the strong writing and gripping political intrigue that Heidi Joy Tretheway brings.

I love politics. I'm a junkie. And part of what made this book appeal to me was the comparison to The Good Wife, one of my all-time favorite TV shows. But Grace is nothing like Alicia Florek. Except she is. Alicia allows a lot from Peter, because of her family or her career. There is a lot of Alicia in Grace, but Grace is her own person. And about that same time that I felt like I saw glimpses of a Grace I could love, could root for, and even respect, the plot took off at a frantic pace.

Plot
While this is technically a romance, and touted as an erotic romance at that, it's really so much more. It's a political thriller with a steamy romantic co-plot. Freshman Congresswoman, Grace Colton, is a far-left liberal on guns and the environment, two political hot potatoes that helped her get elected in the wake of personal tragedy. When her name is bandied about as a potential running mate for two of the Democratic parties' top presidential hopefuls, those issues could be a liability. The political wheeling and dealing is almost as hot as the sex. Tretheway threw in several plot twists that upped the stakes and kept me turning page after page.

World Building
The world building is simply fantastic. Everything from the way Portland, Oregon is portrayed, to the Washington beltway is authentic. The author pays so much attention to the little things, the locations are like word paintings in exquisite detail. And the politics are about as real as it gets.

Characters
So, I didn't love the characters initially. I didn't even like them, but I couldn't deny that they were incredibly well crafted, three-dimensional people. But by the end of the book, I loved both Jared and Grace. That's some rock-solid character development. The supporting characters, everyone from Trey and Mama Bea to Darrow and Conover, are extremely well crafted.

Top Five Things I Enjoyed About The Phoenix Candidate
1. The politics. The political landscape, the backstabbing, the games, are all so, so believable.

2. Trey. As Grace's right-hand man, he has her back in every case and keeps her grounded.

3. Lauren Kennedy Darrow. She's delicious as the polished antagonist with a complex backstory. So fun to hate.

4. Jared. Yeah, it took me almost three quarters of the book to warm up to him, but once I did, I did in a big way.

5. Grace's Interview. When she gaffes on national TV, it's epic!

Bottom Line
This is a smart, sassy political thriller, rolled in romance with lots of steamy sex, but it's the politics that really set it apart.

WHOA.

I am not a very political person, and could be described as someone who vehemently stays away from all things politics, but I have found a way to change this: set an erotic romance in a political environment. I ate that ish up like candy.

Grace Colton has a tragic back story that is the very fire that burns within and makes her reach for greatness. She is strong, smart, and has a spine of steel. She does not bend and break when the pressure is on, whether it be in the public eye, or her bedroom (or outside, as desire will have it). She is the phoenix rising from the ashes. She doesn't need a man beside her to be a compelling character, it just makes her better.

Jared Rankin is a seasoned political consultant with an elusive story. He asks for the world and only gives back a little at a time. He is dominant, demanding, infuriating, and so damn sexy you have no trouble seeing how Grace could fall for him. Just listen to me for one f*cking second and pick this book up. You will LOVE Jared. He's hot, he's horny, he's incredible at what he does, and he's an amazing character and now a book boyfriend.

The story weaves expertly through the political scene, setting up some interesting situations that have you wanting to b*tch slap some crazies, or cringe for Grace when things seem to be falling apart. I loved the narrative, thought the characters were amazing, and simply cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series, the Phoenix Campaign!

REVIEW:
And to think I thought the TV show Scandal was hot and full of political drama, but Tretheway kicks it up ten notchs with smoking hot romance and political betrayal. I’ve only read a few political based novels, but after being introduced to the character Grace Colton, I’m definitely going to hunt for more tough political woman to read about.

The Phoenix Candidate follows Congresswoman Grace Colton aka code name Phoenix. Grace’s life is about to take an interesting turn when she is put on the short list as a potentially running mate for two sides. Grace is a true to her words woman, she has known great loss after her husband and child were taken from her and she sticks to her guns when it comes to her word and beliefs. But when she meets Senator Shep Conovers consultant Jared, she is shocked to see the face of her one night stand and a man she cant get out of her head.

Grace is a woman to admire; she is strong after the loss of her family and stays true to her voters and thoughts in politics. She also is lonely and when she meets Jared he doesn’t just sweep her off her feet he dominates and controls her in a way she’s always wanted. Grace is a little quirky and unsure of herself when it comes to Jared, he’s a bit of an unknown and surprise. I liked that she became more open and herself with Jared. With so much on her mind, being torn in two directions by two potential presidential candidates, I cant imagine how much my mind would be spinning. As a person she is down to earth and I was able to connect to her innocence and determination to stay true to herself.

Jared is an intense man at the beginning, I was a bit surprised in his controlled demeanor with Grace and wasn’t sure if he was to be trusted. I enjoyed watching his transformation once he meets Grace, her sweetness but also her no bull attitude, woke him up a bit. He deals with a load of political nonsense and works for a truly good candidate that he trusts. Grace is unexpected and he cant seems to keep himself away from her. Their moments are smoking hot and he knows how to push all of Graces’ buttons in all the right and wrong ways.

In the end I totally loved this new series, the romance was unbelievable, the characters have so much depth and emotion, and the political drama is so in your face real that it makes you think what really happens behind the scenes. This was my first by Tretheway and her fantastic hook line and sinker writing, definitely has me wanting to read more of her work. The betrayal and fake people that are introduced, I can tell are going to be a big problem for Grace in the future. She is going to have a lot challenges coming her way in the next book and I cant wait to see what happens next.

“Grace, you’re a beautiful woman. You can do whatever you choose, but here’s what I am offering: No stories. No strings. And no regrets in the morning.”

Grace Colton has an image to uphold. As a congresswoman she knows she needs to be careful of what she does and how it might appear to her constituents. But as a lonely widow out with friends she feels all woman and is very attracted to the domineering man she meets at a bar. Deciding to anonymously go home with him for one incredible night that full filled many a fantasy she feels alive for the first time in a long time. But when the next day comes and she finds out that not everything was as anonymous as she though does she have regrets or does she decide that there is room for more in her life than fighting for the legacies of the husband and child she lost.

“I have no problem mixing business with pleasure, especially when there are so many possibilities.”

After falling in love with her Tattoo Thief series, Heidi Joy Tretheway is a 1-click author for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect when The Phoenix Candidate arrived on my kindle but I decided to dive in blind and I am very happy I did. The Phoenix Candidate is a super sexy political drama that will leave you guessing where Grace’s loyalties will lie when all is said and done. I love how Heidi took a political drama and sexed it up without making it feel cheap or cheesy! I got the best of both the drama and erotica worlds and I am excited to continue the series.

“No kiss. Fitting. Jared’s no prince, and my life is anything but a fairy tale.”

Jared was the highlight of this book for me. I love a man who is not all good and not all bad. He leaves me guessing and wondering, plus the man gives good dirty talk and we all know that us Red Cheeks Chicks are suckers for a dirty talking man. From the beginning Jared can tell that Grace (who is powerful in her own life) desperately wants to give in and give up control in the bedroom and boy is Jared willing to do that for her. But her has a catch and something she becomes even more desperate for . . . he won’t kiss her on the lips. He was constantly leaving me wondering where his issues came from and if they were even something he would be able to move past.

“Oh no, you do not, Mr. Tease. You will not fucking take me to the edge and just leave me there.”

Overall, The Phoenix Candidate was an easy read that was very different than any other erotic novel I have read and I am very excited to get the next part in this story soon!

4.5 Stars!

Politics, sex and the potential for scandal make for an explosive combination and I was really interested in reading THE PHOENIX CANDIDATE as soon as I read the synopsis. I have to say that it was so much more than I expected! I think of it as Scandal meets The West Wing.

Grace Colton is a US Congresswoman from Oregon whose personal tragedy impelled her to run for and ultimately win her congressional seat. Out for a night in town with her friends, she meets an attractive stranger and has a mind-blowing one night stand with him. The following morning, Grace receives a call with the potential to change her life: she is being considered as a running mate for a presidential hopeful and has to be vetted. Problem is the political consultant, the person responsible for vetting her and fixing her image is her one night stand from the previous night. A night that was supposed to be free of strings or regrets has become something that could destroy Grace's chance at the VP slot.

Jared Rankin is the man who makes it happen behind the scenes and much of a dark horse for most of the story. During the process of vetting Grace, he finds himself intrigued by her and sets out to get to know her and they very quickly find themselves blurring the lines between professional and personal.

Grace and Jared together are a sizzling combination and even though Grace is willing to give Jared control in the bedroom, she will go head-to-head against him outside of it. In a world where intrigue and scandal are rife, they take very reckless chances that could destroy their careers but I still can't help but root for them to work out.

I am a news junkie and especially follow the political news, so seeing real life happenings incorporated into this story so well was very exciting for me. THE PHOENIX CANDIDATE is so well-written and is the perfect balance of politics and romance. I absolutely enjoyed everything about this book - strong and complicated characters, very steamy scenes, secrets, scheming opponents, great dialogue and so much more kept me turning the pages. Ms. Tretheway has given me a reason to reconsider my dislike for trilogies and I really look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I was expecting a good scandal in this book and I sure did get one….a fantastic one at that!

The story revolves around Grace Colton. She tragically loses her family to a shooting and rather than wallowing she decides that she needs to make a difference. She therefore runs and eventually becomes an elected congresswoman for the State of Oregon.

One would expect that a single woman in any leadership position could be somewhat lonely so I see why Grace would be tempted and eventually accept a proposition by a random stranger, Jared. She agrees to a one night stand. A much-needed night of “No stories. No strings. And no regrets in the morning.”

Grace wasn’t anticipating seeing Jared again after that passionate night yet he suddenly appears during one of the most important meetings of her political career. A meeting where she is asked to run as VP. Jared happens to be the political consultant appointed to advise her. Knowing this, their first encounter doesn’t seem so random after all.

If Grace’s life as a congresswoman was hectic then its worse now. Her obligations have tripled. So many irresistible opportunities are presented her way and just as long as she conforms all her dreams could become true yet she refuses to relinquish her beliefs and convictions. She had a backbone of steel. She isn’t easily swayed no matter what they throw her way. She is willing to lose everything as long as she stood by her principles. This is what I loved most about this book… Grace’s character. She was amazing!

“You wreck me, Grace. You’re truth and beauty. You’re power and passion. You’re my drug, my clarity. And you are fucking mine.”

Jared was a perfect match for her. I didn’t think so in the beginning because of how overbearing he was but then I soon realized that it would take a commanding man such as Jared to be able to handle a woman with that much strength.

About the romance… I thought it was spot on perfect. I don’t know about you guys but I thought the fact that Grace was in her late thirties made the story even more interesting.

I have to admit that I normally avoid stories involving politics because the subject simply bores me but the way the author balanced out those details with the other elements definitely complimented the overall story.

I absolutely enjoyed this one and I can not wait to see how Grace Colton handles the “changes” that about to occur in her life.

MICHELLE'S REVIEW

So this was my first book by Heidi Joy Tretheway. And I loved it!!!!

I mean how could I not? House of Cards is my favorite show, I live in DC, I eat, sleep and breathe politics. So I loved this. Kind of like:

I did think our lovers- Jared and Grace took off a little fast. I wish they had talked a bit more in the beginning about what had happened between them but I also kind of got why they didn't. Plus- eventually they got around to it.

Here is something important to note. There is a ton of sex in this book and it is all incredibly hot. So damn hot. Explosively hot. So yea- sex. Hot.

I LOVE that Grace is 39. She has lived, loved and lost. She has a bad ass career and it's about to get even better. But she is also 100% a woman and I love that about her. Her age makes her likeable and relatable.

It took me a while to get on board with Jared. He was just such a typical DC asshole. I was almost like " I don't want to have to read about the assholes that I am stuck dating."

But again- he was real and it totally worked. And we do get an explanation on why he is the way he is.

I don't know if Heidi has a political background but she nailed the underbelly of this world. I work in the political arena and there is so much bullshit underneath it. Heidi just totally got that from start to finish.

This is definitely the perfect balance between political drama and sexy time story. It's not heavily leaning towards either side but really well balanced. The sex is amazing but the politics part is captivating on its own. But even if it isn't your thing- I suggest you give it a try because I think you'll really like it.

There is a book 2 to this series which I am so excited about! I would have died ifthat was the end. In my advanced copy, there was a preview for book 2 and now I am dying for it. Cannot wait for more Grace and Jared!!

The Phoenix Candidate, Heidi Joy Tretheway
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance, Erotic.

So I mulled over this one, it sounded great but politics? While I’m interested in them from the UK side, US politics is so different that if its a read that’s heavy on them I just get lost. Still, took the plunge and am glad I did.
Its a really fun read, very hot and sensual at times, and the politics side is kept interesting – just enough to show how the system works, the old conundrum do candidates go for what they believe in personally, or what they believe will get them elected. Its all quite cynical at times – much as the real thing is.
I love Grace, she’s come to politics after a tragedy when her husband and young son were killed in a shooting accident. As a UK reader it always amazes me how devoted to their guns the US populace are....only this week there was a report of a 2 year old shooting his mother dead in a supermarket after getting her gun from her handbag!! A two years old? A gun while out shopping? All of that is astonishing to us in UK,. where guns are tightly regulated. Of course there’s still tragedies, but no normal everyday person carries a gun around in their daily life. Anyway – back to the book...Grace has campaigned for tighter regulation, and has clearly got a devoted following – now she’s the chance to take it further, way beyond her dreams, right to the top as a VP candidate. Jared is the man to approach her initially, working closely for the Senator who’s running for the top job, but then a second contender comes in who wants her. There’s tough decisions to make.
I loved House of Cards, the series from the 70’s about UK politics and the politics in this reminds me of that series, very astute, very sharp, witty and at times cynical, and so realistic. Its a great read and the attraction between Grace and Jared is sizzling. As always though nothing is straightforward and Grace reaches a  position where she has to make some hard choices, where she has to decide who she can trust and its tough...
It wraps up as a complete book ( the 1-4 series out) but there’s a sequel to come and I’d love to read that. There’s an intro in here and it brings in a line I saw coming but which is still going to be fun! If you want a sharp, witty read, with a storyline that's realistic, and peopled with characters that feel real, have flaws and are hot and sexy this is for you.

Stars: Five, its a great solid read, though it’s probably just a one off read for me.

Original Review @ Naomi’s Reading Palace

For a girl that lives in Australia and knows nothing about politics, I absolutely loved this book! Heidi Joy Tretheway has done a remarkable job tying together the past, politics and passion, to create this addictive read that I want more of it NOW!!

Grace was a character I liked immediately! When I first met her, she was in a sizzling situation outside of her comfort zone, but was willing to see it through. I was soon thrown into the world of American Politics and learning more about Grace as her past is unearthed and she is pursued for the job of her dreams. She is the type of person who is passionate about her beliefs and is willing to stand up for herself.

Jared is quite the mysterious guy. I was unsure of what his intentions were in the beginning, but it soon becomes apparent that he is there for something more. He has a lot of secrets and he slowly lets down some walls and I was able to understand why he was so closed off.

The sparks between Grace and Jared are scorching!! They are completely drawn to each other, body and soul. There are some hiccups along the way and they both need to take ‘one fucking minute’ to think things through. I loved seeing them together and have my fingers crossed that they see it through to the end together.

There were a few interesting side characters introduced in this book. I loved Trey, Grace’s assistant he is able to manage her schedule and is basically her family along with his mother Mama Bea. Aaron and Lauren Darrow are a manipulative pair. And then there is her friend Shep Conover, the guy in her corner, willing to support her in any decision she wants to make. All these characters add great depth, support or twists to the storyline.

This is the first book in Heidi Joy Tretheway’s Grace Colton series, and I am completely addicted to it! The characters are head strong, fiery and determined to succeed. They have had difficult pasts that have shaped them into the people they are today. Heidi has a writing style that sweeps you away quickly and you immerse yourself in the political world she created. I am excited to get into the next book, The Phoenix Campaign, to see what happens next for them.
