As a big fan of Mark Shaiken’s 3J Legal Thriller Series, I was naturally excited to dive into his new collection of essays. Knowing his flair for delivering a good story, I was eager to see how his candid style would translate into personal reflections. “It’s What Makes Me… Me” offers an unfiltered (semi-unfiltered?) glimpse into the man behind the bankruptcy courtroom dramas, along with his take on a slew of topics both eclectic and down-to-earth.

The essays are divided into groups, a few of my favorite topics being, Some Stuff About Me, On Writing, Pop Culture & Me, Observations, Reflections & Opinions, Aging—We All Seem To Be Doing It and, of course, The 3J Legal Thriller Series.

Reading “It’s What Makes Me… Me” was an absolute delight, and I felt like I was reminiscing with an old friend. Shaiken draws you into his world with ease and familiarity, be it the things we have in common or the things we’ve thought about but have never voiced. If you have thought about it, Shaiken has probably written about it in this book.

The writing is striking and balanced. Shaiken applies the same attention to detail you might expect of a seasoned attorney. His ability to be deeply personal and universally relatable draws readers into a shared space of connection. I can’t count the number of times I found myself nodding and talking back to the book with declarations of “Yes!” and “Right?” and “I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that.”

Essays on aging, for instance, unapologetically navigates the bittersweet reality with grace and wit. In “Getting Old, The Golden Years Scam,” Shaiken confronts those who claim older is better, touting that it’s all lies and fake news and definitely not better. Shaiken backs these sentiments up by listing examples of “not better” such as having to change your diet to eliminate certain food groups, or not being able to hear things or forgetting things. The chapter wraps up with a discussion about how there is nothing better about self-improvement quotes.

“Whoever said, ‘Age is just a number, but attitude is everything’ was wrong. They meant a good attitude. I’ve developed an attitude as I’ve gotten older, but it’s not a good one. It’s this: aging isn’t for the faint of heart.”

He jests, but he’s clearly enjoying his golden years as an award-winning author, photographer, musician and poet. His motto appears to be, “bring it on!”

The section “On Writing” obviously appealed to me as a supporter of independent authors. I always find it fascinating when a writer reveals their frustrations and triumphs on the creative process and was happy to agree with the author on most things. Another instance of “I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that” is Shaiken’s response to why he writes books. The answer: “Writing is better than talking with someone.” Amen to that! He also has some cheeky comments about book reviewers, LOL, along with some good advice for authors; my favorite being how to write dialogue. You’re going to have to read the book for the answer, though.

The most difficult part of reviewing a collection of essays is narrowing your thoughts down to just a few stories. With “It’s What Makes Me… Me,” it was especially challenging as I found something in nearly every story worthy of mention. So, consider this review as simply a fraction of my thoughts about Shaiken’s collective musings. It’s a beautiful mix of storytelling, life lessons, and candid observations that make for a read you won’t be able to put down. I don’t know about you, but I can’t say that about too many non-fiction titles.

Whether you’re a fan of Mark Shaiken’s novels or new to his work, this collection, “It’s What Makes Me… Me” is a testament to the power of storytelling in all its forms – a must-read for anyone who appreciates a story well told. It’s What Makes Me . . . Me is a captivating collection of essays that offer a unique perspective on life. Written by a retired attorney, Mark Shaiken's essays cover a wide range of topics, from personal anecdotes to professional experiences. He invites readers into his world, sharing the journey that shaped him. His candid and often humorous musings paint a vivid picture of a man navigating the transitions from law to a more introspective, creative life.

Shaiken's writing is not just insightful but also remarkably relatable. In chapters like "I Look Bad in a Hat," his self-deprecating humor shines through, offering a light-hearted look at his attempts to fit into certain societal norms, a struggle many can relate to. Similarly, "Ramblin’ Not Amblin’" provides a poignant reflection on his life's journey, marked by a series of significant moves and career changes. The essay captures the essence of someone who has never taken the easy path but instead embraced the twists and turns of a life well-lived.

In "Baseball & Me," Shaiken’s love for the sport transcends mere fandom, becoming a lens through which he views and understands life’s complexities. His detailed memories of watching games with family and the evolving nature of his support for various teams reveal the deep connections and traditions that sports can foster. This essay is a delightful mix of nostalgia and personal growth, capturing the timeless nature of America's favorite pastime.

The chapter "Work, Sleep, and Repeat" resonated deeply with me due to its poignant exploration of the monotonous cycle often experienced in demanding careers. Shaiken captures the essence of this repetitive routine by illustrating his personal experiences as a lawyer. He details the relentless pressure and the lack of personal time, which many professionals can relate to. The chapter’s strength lies in its raw honesty, Shaiken doesn’t shy away from describing the toll this lifestyle took on his mental and physical health. For instance, his recounting of late-night calls and the perpetual sense of urgency vividly paints a picture of a life where work dominates every waking moment.

"It’s What Makes Me . . . Me" is a compelling read for anyone interested in personal essays that blend humor, introspection, and life lessons. Shaiken’s ability to reflect on his experiences with authenticity and wit makes this book a worthwhile addition to any reader’s shelf. Whether you’re a fan of legal stories, personal memoirs, or simply enjoy a well-told story, this collection offers something for everyone.

‘You can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been’ – Reflections on life

Colorado author Mark A. Shaiken earned his degrees from Haverford College and Washburn University and served as an attorney, practicing commercial bankruptcy law. Now retired from law, he writes novels informed by that career: his books to date: AND… JUST LIKE THAT, FRESH START, AUTOMATIC STAY, UNFAIR DISCRIMINATION, and CRAM DOWN. In his debut - AND…JUST LIKE THAT - he shared his experiences with ending his law practice – his post-law days. Now four years later he offers WHAT MAKES ME…ME, a collection of essays about his life since law presented is his inimitable writing style that provides an opportunity for the reader to relate not only to his life experiences but also stimulates self reflection!

Or as he states as the book opens, ‘My essay process is simple: I have things on my mind, I write them down, you read them, and in doing so, I transfer my ideas to your head, and I move on to the next topic. Writing things down gets them out of my brain, hands them off to you, and leaves more space in my head for new stuff. I don't have a monkey brain chattering away at me all the time, but I have lots of notions in there and I share them. Sharing things is my way of trying to figure it all out….anyone who’s been in the law business for a long time, like me, perhaps, maybe, just possibly, could use some therapy. Consider these compositions my therapy sessions with you. I thank you in advance for the couch and your ear...These essays are about my relationship with my life. Maybe, in some ways, just like your life and your relationship with it. So read on and see some of what’s inside my head, my relationship with life, and what has always made me...me.’

In that construct Mark muses on his personality traits, his entry into the author arena, thoughts on pop culture, philosophical reflections, the process of aging, his poetry, and others thoughts delivered with wit, sarcasm at times, insight, tenderness, and in the end, genuine concern and caring about how we all should be ourselves. Poignant – and pertinent – this book is a treasure!

Mark Shaiken’s book is written in a simple and easy-to-read style, making it feel like a conversation with an old friend. He shares various aspects of his life, particularly those that shaped him into the person he is today—a retired attorney with extensive experience in bankruptcy law, among other areas.

The book is challenging to categorize because it doesn’t follow a linear narrative. Each chapter covers different experiences, and while they might not seem connected at first, they eventually come together to form a cohesive whole. This approach adds a certain charm to the book, and by the end, the seemingly unrelated chapters make sense as part of a larger picture. At times, the writing feels almost like fiction, which wasn’t surprising to me since I’m familiar with the author’s other works. He has a knack for writing with a comic touch, though this book evokes a range of emotions beyond just humor. What stood out to me was the author’s reflection on how living a rich and culturally diverse life presents countless opportunities. He demonstrates that achieving a fulfilling life involves diversifying activities over the years and shows how each activity—whether sports, music, or study—has impacted his life, pursued with discipline and determination.

I found it to be an interesting autobiography. It doesn’t follow the typical chronological format; instead, it blends experiences across different chapters, drawing out both the positive and negative aspects of each activity and analyzing them in the final chapters. This book is recommended for a wide range of readers, as it offers something different for everyone.

As I read this book, I found myself laughing out loud several times. It’s a truly wonderful and thought-provoking read. The author’s writing style is engaging, and the book is filled with anecdotes from his life—ranging from hardships to successes. He invites readers into pivotal moments of his life, making those experiences feel vivid and real.
The title of the book, in my opinion, perfectly reflects the author’s personality. He has crafted a series of essays filled with humor and reflections on his life. The way he writes encourages readers to reflect on their own lives, drawing them in as if they were reading a captivating fiction novel rather than a memoir. The author’s laid-back, relatable, and comic tone makes this memoir feel approachable. He touches on topics like youth, aging, beauty, and the simple joys of human experience. I particularly enjoyed the chapters “Pop Culture and Me” and “Poetry and Me,” as I found them especially relatable. The author’s witty and engaging personality shines through in his writing, making it easy for readers to connect with him. The book is set in Denver, Colorado, which adds another layer to the experiences he shares. I appreciated how the author motivates readers to look inward and recognize the unique and special moments that enrich our daily lives.
In my opinion, this book is filled with important life lessons. It’s motivating and highlights that while life has its struggles, it also offers solutions and brighter days. I highly recommend this book!

"Patient- Heal thyself?"

This book is a compelling collection of essays that offers a glimpse into the author's life, experiences, and reflections as both a lawyer and a writer. Through his candid writing style, the author shares his thoughts on life, aging, pop culture, and more, providing readers with intimate yet relatable insights. The essays are well-organized, showcasing different aspects of his life, from his legal career to his post-law experiences, and highlighting how the people and events in his life have shaped him.
I particularly enjoyed how the author seamlessly combines personal anecdotes with broader observations, making the stories feel like conversations with a friend. His legal background is evident in the structured and methodical way he presents his ideas, which adds to the clarity and engagement of the writing. As a superhero fan, I found his reflections on characters like Spiderman and Ironman especially enjoyable. The humorous story about posting on Craigslist to find a primary care physician resonated with me, as did the tale about using a calendar to avoid confusion—both were funny and relatable.
The author’s experiences and storytelling style make him someone you’d want to sit down with and listen to for hours. His essays are not only entertaining and amusing but also inspiring, leaving me eager to hear more of his stories. This is a book that invites you to reflect on life and appreciate the wisdom gained from diverse experiences.
