How To Tame A Trickster Fae

Rate this book
He’s a gorgeous trickster Fae, and he holds the key to the only thing I’ve ever wanted— what could go wrong?

Joining the elite jewelry enchanter’s guild is all I've ever wanted... but nothing I create sparkles enough for them. After my latest rejection, I’m starting to think I’ll never be good enough, no matter how perfectly I enchant an emerald. Without their approval or a coven, though, my business is sure to go under, and all my dreams with it.

Then Caelan, a handsome Unseelie fae of the worst sort, shows up in my cozy small town, full of more charm than anyone I've ever met. When a group of dwarves start telling tale of rare gems in a nearby cave, though, I know exactly what I have to convince Caelan to use his Unseelie magic to lead me to the sapphires before the dwarves can get them. Enchanting a dragon sapphire is guaranteed to prove I'm good enough for the guild.

Driven by fear of failure, I bind Caelan to me with a complicated spell. Sure, it's a bit unorthodox, and maybe slightly unethical— but it's not supposed to make me fall for him.

The spell is definitely not supposed to make him fall in love with me... or call me his mate. But how can I tell where the spell ends and we begin?

How To Tame A Trickster Fae is a cozy, low-stakes, spicy monster fantasy romance, all set in the picturesque small town of the Wild Oak Woods.

This was such a sweet and cozy read! The romantasy was giving just enough plot to balance the romance and steam and I loved how the small village was so quaint; don't even get me started on all the adorable familiars. The overarching plot has so much potential to blossom in the next few books and I cannot wait to read the next one. This would be such a fun and simple read for fall and Halloween, the vibes were here!

Okay, I'm ready to go ahead and move into the town of the Wild Oak Woods. Is there some land for sale?

This is a cute little escape into a whimsical world with sweet and spicy romance and small-town charm. Set in the picturesque Wild Oak Woods, the story is as cozy as the setting suggests, offering a perfect blend of fantasy and heartwarming romance. I LOVE cozy monster romance, tbh. Why are the 'monsters' such stans for their ladies? Love them so much!

This was a cute and charming story about a group of covenless witches of all varieties that live in a cozy little town filled with all manner of fantasy creatures. The quirky and endearing community adds so much to this story. Bell is always so good at sprinkling world-building into the story itself rather than laying it all out for you. I adore that aspect of her writing.

I loved that this was a story about two people falling in love; and especially the twist on the mating bond. It's charming and quirky and funny. Perfect for a foul-weather read. Just add a blanket, coffee, and a dog (perhaps named Boner).

This is a charming, low-stakes fantasy romance that will leave you with a smile on your face and a longing for more adventures in the Wild Oak Woods. If you’re in the mood for something cozy and magical, this book is a perfect choice.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to review. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary. All opinions are my own.

This was sweet and cozy, with a touch of comedy. Caelan was a little shit with a mischievous side that I wish we got to see more of. He was obsessed with Wren from the beginning, though reluctant for any long term attachment. Wren was all sorts of depressed, and understandably so. Caelan helped her get out of her rut and she helped him see the good in himself. I’m curious about how the overarching plot throughout this series will pan out.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: accidental attraction potion imbibed leading to touching, mentions of death of parents, depressive episode, mentions of being in physical danger from Unseelie Queen, mention of side character killing brother in self defense, discussion of being controlled by Unseelie Queen

I doze, my nose still as close to her scalp as I can make it, my heart a slow thud in my chest. I wonder if she knows it beats for her now. I wonder if maybe it always has.

This was such a breath of fresh air to read! I can always trust January Bell to deliver a story that will succeed in transporting you into whatever new world she creates, and Caelan and Wren's story absolutely delivered on that. There was an air of magic and mystery that was woven throughout the story that left me intrigued and ready for more as I fell into the romance of the trickster fae and his golden witch mate.

As much as I LOVED Caelan and his cheeky demeanor, I absolutely adored Caelan and Wren together. At first, they didn't really know what to make of each other and are sort of baffled by their instant attraction when they first meet, but fate (and other forces) seem to be determined to bind them together permanently. I loved Caelan's charming, devil-may-care attitude, especially when he is confronted by his fated mate. He lives for mischief and is just the right amount of cocky, but even his seemingly carefree nature is stripped bare in the face of his mate. Wren was the perfect balm to his restless soul, while Caelan was exactly the unwavering support and care Wren was missing. There were so many surprises towards the end of the story, and I am so stoked for the next book!🖤

Tropes: fated mates, cozy monster romance, charming rogue hero, sassy witch heroine, he falls first, hurt/comfort, 'soft only for her' hero, knotting, praise kink, fantasy small town, opposites-attract, found family, girl gang, slow burn, STEAMY🔥

Well, I guess I am guilty of sleeping on such gems as January Bell's books. Honestly, how did that happen? In my defence, I'll make sure to make amends and read everything she has written.

The last time I laughed so hard while reading a fantasy book was when I was deeply immersed in the Mead Mishaps series by Kimberly Lemming, so I think that would be a good comparison.

How To Tame A Trickster Fae is the epitome of a low-stakes, cosy fantasy, with an obscene amount of banter and humour. Not to mention the spice. Really, I was laughing and giggling the entire time. The characters are just perfect, all of them, and now I must know what happens next. What is going on in Wild Oak Woods?

All Wren ever wanted was to join the jewellery enchanter's guild. Find a place to call home and just belong. She has found a home and a group of friends in Wild Oak Woods, but the guild is still her sour point. Will everything change on day three when Unseelie Fae come to her little town? Well, you can just imagine...

I loved Wren and her friends. I loved Caelan and his friends. I loved the story and want more HEA in Wild Oak Woods. I loved the playfulness, the banter, the love, and the spice. This story made my day and brought tears from laughter. I am so thankful I got to read and review this ARC.

In short, How To Take A Trickster Fae will gift you
- cosy monster fantasy
- low stakes
- love story with spice
- banter and humour to brighten your day
- intense & endearing characters
- fae, witches, and other mythical creatures coexisting
- HEA
and a story to literally make you cry from laughing too much!

I’m obsessed with Caelan and his love for mischief. If that male told me we were mates, you wouldn’t catch me questioning it.
I love this world! I wanna live there so bad. I especially want to eat their sweet treats.
The side characters were so fun. I already know the rest of this series is gonna be just as good, and I can’t wait!!!

I really enjoyed this one. I admit it did take me a bit to get into the story but I ended up really liking Caelan and Wren together and their cute banter. I kind of wish we got a more of a trickster side from Caelan but I loved his romantic side, too.

It's advertised as a cozy romance and I would absolutely agree with that. There's low stakes, swoony romance, cute animal familiars, supportive friendships, and a magical town. We even get hints into the couples for the next books in the series.

The spice was good and not overwhelming. It sort of came on suddenly but they had really good communication between each other and Caelan was willing to wait if she wasn't ready which I really liked.

Looking forward to the next book and learning more about those plot twists at the end!

"I am bound to you willingly, you little fool. I could have broken your spell the minute you called me, but it suits me rather well to be tied with the object of all my desires”

Banter… fated mates… sisterhood.. all of the feel goods.

Wren, a clever witch jeweler, defies all odds after losing her family and with the help of her sisterhood of witches and her mate she fulfills her wildest dreams.

This author never fails to keep me captivated from the very beginning and I love that about her writing. It was the perfect cozy, low-stake, monster/fae, fated mate book that I needed to get out of my previous reading slump.

"Wren, I'm out of patience for this laundry list of your so-called failings.
You are the most beautiful thing the sun has ever kissed with its morning light, and I want you."

BRB😭

This was the perfect first book to this series, I cant wait for the second book already.

“Why, I could be your future, little love,”

What do you mean the end?! I could read 600 more pages about Wren and Caelen…. That being said oh my goodness gracious this was the perfect cozy opposites attract romcom! I literally couldn’t put it down, and I must say Wren and Caelen have my heart! These two stubborn but amazing characters, meet when Caelen and a group of his friends stumble into Wild Oaks Woods after being ousted from their home, and boy oh boy is Caelen a bit of an mischief maker who needs to be put in his place. Thankfully it seems that is what fate had in mind when Wren crashes Caelen and companies meeting with a fellow Wild Oaks Witch after some terrible new, while they’re looking for a place to stay and some work. Caelen is swept off his feet almost immediately, good thing Wren has a good head on her shoulders and isn’t willing to fall for a few silver tongued lines and whispered sweet nothings… but when rumors of a dragon sapphire vein somewhere in the Ever Forest, Wren sees her luck changing, and well Caelen sees a way to trap his beautiful Wren… and while there may have been sparks at first site these two are not above making each other work for what might just be true love!!! So if you’re looking for the sweetest cozy romance between a unseelie fae male who is obsessive and possessive from the second he stumbles upon his little golden witch and a sassy metalworking witch who is just doing her best to live the life she’s always wanted even if her insecurities try to hold her back, filled with hilarious banter, fated mates, found families, animal familiars of all kinds, a dog with an unfortunate but hilarious name, a smidge of mystery and drama, and all the spice you could possibly want, then don’t miss out on January Bells How to Tame a Trickster Fae.

This was such a whimsical, sweet and spicy read with all of the cozy fall vibes you could ask for. This book will make you want to curl up with a cup of hot tea and a pastry, just to fit in with the characters and Wild Oak Woods!

Caelan was such a fun character. I loved his trickster fae side, but I also loved how his edges became softened throughout the book. His love for Wren was just so sweet and genuine! Wren also grew so much over this book. She went from being down and unsure to confident and happy. While the first spicy scene happened all of a sudden, I did love the chemistry between Caelan and Wren.

My only small complaint with this book is that it took me a little longer than usual to get into this book. BUT, that is all to say that I did genuinely really adore this book! Once Caelan and Wren really start interacting, the pace picks up. Once they get together, the book flies by!

This story will leave you wanting to read the next pronto! I'm already invested in Caelan and Wren's friends finding their romantic matches. Not to mention the plot that'll continue with the next book! Speaking of which, the end of this book is just downright magical!! I absolutely loved it! From enchantments dissolving to special appearances, the ending to the book was perfect! One last thing I want to mention is how much I adored Fenn!🥹🦊

Thank you January Bell for the opportunity to read this ARC! I'm sorry I was a little later getting to this, but appreciate the opportunity so much!🩷 My thoughts and opinions are my own in this review.

How to Tame a Trickster Fae is a low-stakes cosy fantasy that follows a covenless witch and an unseelie Fae that has been banished from the underworld.

Wren, the witch, was a character that I genuinely related to. She doesn't like to cook or clean, she's an introvert and she gets grumpy when sweating in the heat. But reading about her finding her people in this cosy town made me emotional because it reminded me of the time I met my incredible friends that I now call my own coven 🥹

Don't be fooled by the low-stakes cosiness, this book is still 🌶️🌶️. As Wren would say, the knotting is a spiritual experience 😌.

My notes:
🧌 I desperately need to read more of the orc romance between Piper and Ga'Rek. He seems like a giant cuddly bear
🧌 "Who am I to judge? I'm uniquely qualified to judge, actually, and it's one of my favourite pastimes". Slay, Caelan
🧌 Wren is 32 years old and is stressing about everything I'm stressing about at 30 and I love a relatable character
🧌 Cheeky purple fae are now my type

I had a blast with this story, I loved Caelan, he’s such a character, a real trickster but own fun it is when it’s reversed. That one got some game too, I loved how he approached Wren ready to court her.

Wren has her own issue, and doesn’t have time to linger on that specific fact but when she realises that Caelan's help might be necessary, she’s doing “everything” to ensure it.

One thing is sure, they’re made for each other, and I cannot wait for more of this universe.

This romance is a delight to read, it’s light, funny, we can also feel the building of a larger plot and I loved all of these witches.

I received an ARC Copy of this book from the author, this review is from my own thoughts 😍

This is definitely a cozy fantasy romance! I'm not going to lie, it ends a little abruptly/cliffhanger-y but it's super cute and I just found myself unable to wait for the next sweet thing Caelan would do. This is a low stakes fantasy romance, so there's not a lot of action in it, so if that's something you look for in fantasy this may not be for you. I really loved the world January created and their small town is so picturesque, I want to visit immediately! If you're a fantasy reader looking for a cozy romantic fix then this book is an absolute must read!!

Welcome to Wild Oak Woods, where the vibes are cozy and the spice is spicy 🔥

This was such a fun, cute read! There is a fun cast of characters ranging from witches to fae to dwarves to orcs. The community of Wild Oak Woods is quaint and inclusive of all its inhabitants, even the tricky Unseelie Fae that show up. There is also a lovely group of supportive, witchy women that read smut and cast spells…I wanna join their book club!

Wren and Caelan are equal parts funny, cute, and hot together. Caelan is mischievous, ridiculous, and determined to win Wren over despite her uncertainties. If you’re looking for something sexy and low-angst, Wild Oak wWoods is the place for you!

Per usual, January Bell knocked it out of the park with this one. I knew this was going to be good… the teasers about this world have been incredible but when I tell you Wild Oak Woods is bewitching, I’m not joking. Everything about it (ugly farting dogs included) gives off the coziest vibes and you just want to stay in this world! Wren and Caelan deliver the most perfect banter that will have you laughing out loud. The spice is perfection. The storyline surprised me and was so much more than I expected! I am so eager for book two and cannot wait to be back in Wild Oak Woods!!

💖 “My perfect mortal witch, made for me in every way.”
~~~
Wren is amazing! She’s hardworking, kind, compassionate, and understanding. Even more, Wren is clever, resourceful, determined, sassy and fierce. And she’s also an incredibly talented witch, who makes such beautiful jewelry, and is a really awesome and supportive friend. Wren is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!
And then, there’s Caelan! This gorgeous trickster fae is one charming, confident, bold, mischievous and fun male. But there is more to Caelan than meets the eye. Because, underneath his devil-may-care attitude is a male who is also loyal, caring, thoughtful, patient and fiercely protective. And when he sets his eyes on something (or someone), he’s willing to do everything in his power to get it. Caelan is one utterly irresistible male and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Wren and Caelan! From the moment they met, their chemistry was fantastic and off-the-charts hot. I just loved the tension, their banters and the teasing. Every moment they spent together was an absolute delight to read. And Caelan fell so hard for Wren from the very beginning. I adored him for all the ways he took care of his little golden witch, showing her time and time again that he’s the right (and only) male for her. Even more, Caelan and Wren were such a wonderful and fun team. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another, the passionate moments they shared were so hot. Ohhh, Caelan is full of such bitey, naughty and knotty surprises. Wren and Caelan were truly wonderful together and such a perfect match, and more than deserved to find happiness and love together!
In addition, the storyline and worldbuilding were incredible! I just adored everything about Wild Oak Woods and, if I had the chance, I’d be more than happy to live in this bewitching, cozy, small town. Even more, I loved everyone living there, the wonderful friendships that were formed, the cute animal familiars, the book club meetings, the mystery and the magic surrounding it all. With everything that was happening, I was glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, the story is an incredible start of the series! If you’re looking for a fun, cozy, low-stakes and naughty read filled with magic, mystery and mischief, How to Tame a Trickster Fae is the story for you.
I absolutely loved every page of it!
And, with that ending, I cannot wait to see what happens next!
I loved every single thing about this! The first book I read by January Bell was Of Sword & Silver and I was so surprised by how quickly I flew through it. There was just something about the characters and story telling that had me captivated. The author has done it again for me with How to Tame a Trickster Fae and now I know for sure I probably need to search out all of her books! Because what?! I was addicted to this and could literally not put it down.
I have never really read monster romance, so I think this is a good introduction. I love how so many different paranormal elements were present and blended, so even though I had never read "monster" books, I was still familiar with other things like witches and fae. There were many layers to this new world of Wild Oak Woods and I think there's something for everyone. Gateways to new things for people to enjoy that maybe they never thought they would. So the description of cozy monster fantasy romance is perfect!
The world building was incredible and the feel of it all gave me such a happy feeling. The town felt like it was from Hallmark movie, but with magic and every creature imaginable. I also really appreciated how the fae were presented. So many books describe them differently, and there's not many that I've read that show the more sinister, trickster nature. I don't know, I just really liked the fae in this.
There were so many moments that I laughed out loud, especially towards the end. Boner, lol! Just picturing Caelan call the dog that with a straight face had me in tears. The love between Caelan and Wren was incredible and the spice had me blushing a little. O M G!! I liked that the roles were kind of reversed between them, with Caelan being more a caretaker and Wren the breadwinner. It created an interesting dynamic and also pulled at my heartstrings seeing the tenderness that Calean showed Wren.
There so many characters to love and friendship that were so sweet. The town really does feel like a collection of outcasts and everyone is coming together to care for each other and live happily. I'm so excited to read more books about Wild Oak Woods, the romances, and what everyone senses is coming.
I highly recommend this book! So amazing!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
-witches, fae, dwarfs, orcs, and so many more fantasy creatures
This cozy fantasy romance was adorable and super spicy. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. I will be continuing to read these. I have not read anything by January Bell before, but this makes me want to look into her other books. I really enjoyed the writing. The humor was subtle, but always managed to get a chuckle out of me.
Caelan is an “evil” Unseelie trickster fae, who in reality is just a big ‘ole cinnamon roll. He falls first and hard for Wren, and he spends the rest of the book proving his love and devotion. He gives all the praise and good girls you could want.
Wren is a witch without a coven who makes jewelry for a living. Her familiar is the cutest fox. We get to learn what the fox says quite a few times throughout. I was also quite pleased that she is 32 years old. I like to see older MCs!
If cozy fantasy is your thing, or even if it isn’t, check out this book. I adored it. Low stakes books are always a comfort read for me. It is also a relatively short read. It is available on KU!
Quotes:
Simply sharing the same air with you is a gift. I don’t need you to give me your heart all at once. I will savor every piece, every moment you deign me worthy of. I’ve waited for you a hundred years, two hundred… I’ll enjoy pursuing you every minute you allow it.”
“Wooed?”
“Wooed.” I nod emphatically.
“And the first order of wooing is finding your sapphires so that you can achieve your goal. Then I will make you a delicious dinner, rub your feet, which I can tell are hurting, and you’ll decide to let me kiss you again.”
“Boop.”
“Did you…”
“Yes. You needed a boop.”
“I needed a boop,” he repeats.
“It means a lot to me,” I tell him shyly, blotting my mouth with a napkin. “You taking care of me and bringing me this meal.”
“It should,” he agrees.
“And why should it?”
“Because I see how little you expect from the world around you. You expect people to tell you no, you expect to fail at this business, in spite of how good you are, because that’s what the people around you have taught you to expect. They’ve failed you.”
“you are the most beautiful thing the sun has ever kissed with its morning light, and I want you.”
“That’s right, little golden witch. I need you to run, and when I find you, I get to keep you.”
All Wren wants is to be excepted into the elite jewelry enchanter's guild, but after their most recent rejection she fears her business will go under and hers dreams turn to ash.
When Caelan an unseelie fae arrives in the cozy town of Wild Oak Woods, he has mischief up his sleeve and trickery in his heart. And a chance meeting with the witch Wren determines who his next prey will be.
But when the dwarves start talking of rare dragon sapphires in the mines, Wren knows exactly what she needs to do. Bind Caelan to her and use his magic, so she can get to the elusive precious gems before they do and prove once and for all she is good enough for the guild. However, spells are tricky things at best, especially when a fae is involved. She only wanted to find the stones to prove herself, but will she lose her heart instead?....
I'll adored Wren who despite her disappointment over being rejected by the guild, is bright, kind, talented and sassy. She is definitely relatable especially when she say she doesn't like to cook or clean (I have days when I hate these chores too.) But it's her determination to prove herself that made me love her more.
Caelan is charming, witty, tricky and downright cocky at times but you can't help yourself from falling in love with him. I adored the banter between him and Wren and his self assurance that she'd come around to being his mate. Oh and he cooks too. Le sigh..
And we mustn't forget about Boner an ugly old dog who likes to fart, drool and go limp. Priceless.
As I'm still on my fae romance kick I decided to give this one a go and WOWZA I'm glad that I did. It does exactly what it says on the tin, a low stake, cozy, spicy fantasy that I enjoyed immensely and had my heart fluttering. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series when it comes out next month. And I'm not impatiently waiting for it to arrive on my kindle, much 😂
January Bell writes fantasy so well. She writes characters that are well rounded, easy to love, and you desire to see together. The chemistry between her two MCs in this book pours out of the pages and quickly pulls you into their story.
Caelan may be one of my favorite fae MMCs to date. I adore that he is mischievous, arrogant but not so much you can’t like him, and that he is brought to his knees by his fated mate. Wren seems to bring a calm to Caelan’ soul. She isn’t sure what to make of him from the beginning but these two find themselves being pushed together constantly. Almost as if fate wants them together. As Wren is Caelan’s calm, he is her unwavering support that she needed.
I enjoyed this book immensely! January writes characters that are relatable, deep, and layered. Her world building within this cozy romance has me wanting more. It is an easy read, but I gladly would have read this book had it been three times as long. Caelan and Wren have found their way into my heart. Her FMC is strong, resilient, and relatable. Her MMC is a softie for his woman, protective, and sweet.
If you love cozy romance, whimsical worlds, great main and side characters, and a book that guarantees to slay, this is a book for you and January is an author you definitely want to check out more of.
As always review trigger warnings before reading.
Boop, the Cozy Romantasy: A Review of How to Tame a Trickster Fae (ARC), Book 1 in the Wild Oak Woods Series.
First Impressions:
Alien Werewolf's Prize throws you headfirst into a cozy small town filled with witches, fae, and a rag tag group on fantasy creatures. The author does an excellent job of establishing the group of characters and tI found the chapters focused on the friendships were my favorite. I loved our grumpy MMC and his buddies, Kieran and GaRek. The Coven girlies were fabulous as well! Piper, Willow, Narissa, and Rosalina.
The Heart of the Arc:
The romance between Wren and Caelan is was so cute! I found their romance to be sweet, spicy, and believable. I love the small town vibes of Wild Oak and could immediately visualize the place. January also has some visuals on her website if you’re interested: https://wildoakwoods.januarybellroman...
A Final Verdict:
How to Tame a Trickster Fae is a promising start to a heart-warming cozy fantasy romance series. With its strong characters, cozy small town vibes, and sizzling romance, this is a series I'll be eagerly waiting to keep reading!
Recommendation:
If you're looking for a shorter read and love cozy & spicy romances, then definitely add How to Tame a Trickster Fae to your TBR list.
A cozy and sweet fantasy romance, the world of Wild Oak Woods is full of magic and magical creatures. This story draws you in and won't let you go until you've finished it. I loved the characters. At first, I must admit I felt a bit lost, but quickly in the following chapters, Bell's world completely captivated me, especially because of Caelan, that mischievous Fae who falls madly in love with a witch who spends her time in her workshop making jewelry, hoping that the guild will accept her. This book is full of adorable animal familiars, all kinds of creatures, and especially banter—I couldn't stop laughing when I read the name of Boner the dog 🤣. I enjoyed seeing the different types of witches in the story because each of them made the place feel cozier, creating a sense of community, an extended family.
Caelan—what can I say about him? He falls so deeply in love with Wren, and it's beautiful to read about. How he takes care of her, cooks for her, helps her around the house—they are lovely together. And we can't overlook the spice in this book because I really didn't expect a Fae to have a knot 🥵. That added a completely new twist to the spice, and even though it wasn't frequent, it was more than enough; you could see the desire between them and the chemistry they shared. I liked the small hints of the upcoming couples in the series, which I must say I'm more than excited to read. I know it will be just as cozy and romantic as Caelan and Wren.
Steam level: Open-door scenes
Thoughts:
This was a fun read! I don’t often read fantasy romance or lighthearted, cozy books, but this was a nice change of pace. The characters were entertaining, the plot was interesting, and the steam was very well-written. What surprised me the most was that the pacing of this book felt like a slice-of-life story, which I loved. There was a lot of focus on the day-to-day events and conversations of each main and side character, making this a very comfortable read.
Caelan and Wren are a sweet couple, and I enjoyed their instalove romance. Their banter was cute and flirty, and I appreciated seeing the contrast between Caelan’s dominant, prickly personality and Wren’s kindness. Caelan is interesting because he preserves the dark and sinister qualities of an Unseelie fae while possessing the warmth that can only come from a person who is in love. Witnessing Wren’s reactions and responsiveness to him made the story feel all the more special and endearing.
How To Tame A Trickster Fae is the perfect light and comfy read, and I would recommend this to other romance readers who are looking for a fun, steamy time!
I received an advanced copy of this book free of charge. All opinions expressed are my own.
Tropes: Fantasy romance, fae, witches, fated mates, opposites attract, cozy, instalove
Coven-less and facing another rejection from the metalsmithing guild, Wren is floundering. Barely able to care for herself, she’s only going through the motions in the small town she lives and works in, until a chance encounter with an audacious unseelie fae in a bakery leaves her terrified… and intrigued. After his banishment from the unseelie court, Caelan didn’t plan to stay in Wild Oak Woods for long. But when a golden witch smelling of gemstones and wild magic comes across his path, suddenly there is nowhere else he would rather be. After spending centuries of being a devious trickster, now all he wants to be is hers.
This book is like my favorite fall treats - cozy, satisfying and teeming with spice. It’s fun and whimsical, with excellent fantasy and paranormal elements, hilarious and light, with banter and easy pacing, and so incredibly swoony, with a slow burn romance that delivers delicious payout. Wren and Caelan are so incredibly precious. The whole book was so playful and endearing and I’m so excited for book 2!
Fenn hasn’t felt grounded for quite some time. When she is willed a shop in Wild Oak Woods, she’s hoping that she can finally put down roots and build lasting relationships. Caelan and his friends recently escaped from under an evil witch’s rule, and they just so happen upon the refuge which is Wild Oak Woods. Change is on the wind, they’re saying, and Fenn and Caelan’s arrivals in the village might be the catalyst.
This was such a fun, quick jaunt into the fantasy world of Wild Oak Woods. I loved the imagery that Bell created in describing the little village… I want to leave here with the witches and join their coven! The familiars were so cute, the friendships so genuine and warm, and the community the characters built was enviable. I really liked learning about Caelan & his band of friends, as well as watching the relationships between Fenn & her friends, and Fenn & Caelan’s love, develop over the story. This book was so incredibly cute.
I recommend this for lovers of cozy fantasies sprinkled with delicious spice!
I absolutely adore cozy monster romance, especially in a small town setting and this was 100% this book I needed for my fix. The characters are adorable, the town is sweet and magical and the males are absolutely sworn worthy.
Wren and Caelan have an amazing dynamic, and you can feel the tension between them from the very beginning. Their banter was absolutely top tier, I really enjoy how Caelan pushes Wren to not only see herself different but also him. The spice is amazing, and adds to the story, you can feel the connection between Wren and Caelan grow as the story goes on. There is so much healing and comfort within these pages, Wren has such an incredibly rough go of it and it is so lovely to see her strong sisterhood unit.
Getting to explore Wild Oak Woods was an absolute pleasure, you get a real taste for the magical small town and it’s inhabitants. All of the environments, shops and characters are beautifully described that it makes it so easy to fall in love with. The underlying story flows beautifully and you can tell this is leading to something bigger in later books.
I also loved getting it encounter Lila and Druze once more, and how the novella integrated into the story. Definitely recommend this book for anyone that loves cozy romance.
Good
Wren and Caelan
Wren has suffered a number of disappointments in life, but it is shortly after one of the biggest that her life begins to change for the better.
As an UnSeelie Fae, kicked out of Underhill with his two best friends, Caelan is used to being the trickster and troublemaker. When he meets Wren, he is immediately drawn to the magical metalsmith.
Wren sees something in Caelan that she thinks she can use, but there is an irresistible draw between them that has her getting rather closer to him than she had planned.
This is the first book in a new series, set in Wild Oak Woods- a magical town filled with what looks to be outcasts.
I admit, I’m intrigued with this world, and I definitely enjoyed the characters we met in the book; both the main ones and the support characters, and the mysterious background plot is fascinating.
This particular story has some very steamy scenes, some fun magical scenes, and a small amount of action. There’s the setup for a bigger story too, with some intriguing events, and at least two further potential romances also being set up in this book.
It’s an engaging read, in a fun new town and a magical world. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, especially featuring the fae, then you’ll love this series.
