I've always thought of children's stories as simple, well defined lessons in morality where much of the world's harsh realities are kept veiled. Most fables I've read as a child have proved this. Reading The Forestborns, however, opened my eyes to a different way of telling stories to children. With its intricately defined characters and its fabulous world building, Vardhini Amin's book took me into a magical world which was not all candies and roses, but dared to speak about the realities of the world in a manner that does not act diminishing for its target readership. In fact, it does this rather well - dealing with mature concepts from a child's perspective - and allows us to treat children as people with as much sentience as adults. As a story, I liked how the narrative flowed from Avni to Siah and how it all came together, and the surprise twist at the end which was beautifully crafted. I am intrigued by this mystical world Vardhini Amin has created and I am looking forward to learning more about it.

There's a magical realm where all the tree souls come out of their physical bodies after sunset and can move around and have a life just like other creatures. Siah is a young, brave and smart soul part of the Sandalwood grove in a forest below Sahyadri mountain range. Avni is a young girl who often visits the Sandalwood grove. Siah and Avni follow their own quests to save the grove from Sandalwood smugglers.
I think we all have heard about tree's getting slaughtered for humans' own greed or cutting them down to make concrete jungles but what is important is to remember that trees are living organisms just like humans and pets, even though they cant move or speak and author has given this simple message through a very magical tale to the young readers.
Speaking of the magical world, the world building is so beautiful and enchanting, I loved how older trees took care of younger plants and taught them important skills and passed on wisdom. They felt like a real family just like all other animals, including humans.
I also loved that the author has used sanskrit words like chandra, deha, vruha.
Avni and Siah's connection, they were both courageous, smart and sweet girls, I was very worried for them. Waara, the owl was an amazing sidekick and did her job fantastically. Their quest kept me on my toes and I couldn't help bringing it.
If you like magical middle grade books then you must read this book.

From the first glance, The Forestborns draws you into the enchanting world of Vriksha, where plant souls roam under the soft glow of the moonlight.
The concept of a hidden realm filled with ancient secrets immediately sets the stage for a captivating fantasy adventure. I was intrigued by the unique idea of tree souls fighting for survival, especially through the fiery character of Siah. The plot thickens as she joins forces with Avni, a human girl, in a race against time to save the forest.

Vardhini's writing style is both poetic and immersive, painting vivid images of the forest with every word. The world-building is exceptional, and you can almost hear the whispers of the trees and feel the urgency of Siah’s mission. The theme of nature's resilience and the bond between humans and the natural world comes through beautifully, offering a deeper message of harmony and protection.

This book resonated with me on a personal level, reminding me of the fragile balance we must maintain with nature. The bond between Siah and Avni is heartwarming and magical, leaving you with a sense of hope. The Forestborns is a beautifully written tale about courage, unity, and the magic within us all.

Ever wondered if trees could communicate, feel, or emote like humans? In this captivating tale, the author invites us on a mesmerizing journey through a forest where the trees possess souls, capable of both feeling and traveling to distant places. With vivid imagery, the author brings the forest to life, creating a world where trees and plants are as alive and expressive as humans.

The story weaves a complex narrative of humans and trees intertwined, exploring themes of friendship, empathy, bravery, and, most poignantly, the devastating effects of human-induced deforestation.

With a blend of magic and a binge-worthy narrative, the author delivers a thought-provoking story filled with unexpected twists. This is not merely a children’s book—it's a deeply engaging read for adults as well. After finishing, I found myself reflecting on the quiet thoughts of leaves falling from trees during my evening walk in the park, a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and humanity.

The Forestborns really caught me off guard! Once I started reading, I was lost in the world pretty quickly. Just when I thought I had it figured out the ending, everything flipped in the best way. It’s one of those endings that makes you pause and go, ‘Wait, what just happened?!’ But in the end, it all comes together so perfectly. Honestly, I loved it! And even though it’s geared towards younger readers, it didn’t feel like a children's book at all—it had so much depth and emotion that anyone can enjoy it.

The Forestborns is a brilliant work of imagination, creativity and a fictional world put together beautifully. At the risk of not revealing any spoilers, the author has weaved a gripping narrative depicting nature as a highly intelligent entity, especially with trees as "beings" having souls. Written in a beautiful, accessible way for all audiences, the gripping story line is strong enough to make you finish the book in 1-2 sittings.

The story grabs you from the beginning and holds your attention until the end. The connection between the tree and the human felt unique, showing how different lives can come together to protect something bigger than themselves. It left me thinking about the unseen ways the world is connected, and what else is out there that we see but don't understand.

I wish the trees could read this book so they knew, there is someone who is working in their favour. But alas! They can’t so I’ll read for them.

The forestborns is a very beautiful and creative story and wish to read more by the emphatic author.

In the Forestborns it’s hard not to get attached. Avni's got this fierce determination, and Siah is brave and grounded, but both are dealing with their own struggles. By the end, their journey becomes so emotional that it really hit me. I really enjoyed reading this.
