Mel hates job interviews – and this one's shaping up to be the interview from Hell.
From the grumpy receptionist to the disturbingly demonic interview panel and the sleazy CEO, it seems landing her first job is the least of Mel's worries.
Can she make it out of the office alive without selling her soul?
USA Today Bestselling Author Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish. She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.
There are short stories, and there are short stories, this was short.
So what did I mean, well, I was reading a few short stories to help me achieve my reading target, and this was one I had on my Kindle, and I was really getting into the story, when it sort of finished (in prep for the first novel I'm guessing). It was a fun story and to be honest I just wish it had been a little longer. The premiss was fighters from the side of good, the Angels are infiltrating the organisation of the devil, all based around multi national corporations.. I will certainly think twice about continuing, in a good way, and the only reason it got 3 stars instead of 4 was its shortness, it was too short.
Mel is an angel sent to get a job at Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation, AKA HELL. Angel intel has Lucifer up to his usual sneaky take over the world tactics and using a mundane business as his front. Raphael begs Mel to get a job inside so they can get the 411 on what’s going on and whether they need to send in the heavy hitters, the archangels. She reluctantly agrees to take the job, but does she really know what’s she’s getting into?
This is a really short intro to the Mel Goes to HELL series. Well-written and funny if this is an example of what is upcoming then this series promises to be amusing. I’m looking forward to reading Book 2 See You in HELL.
Not much really happens in this books since it's only a couple of chapters long. It introduces us to Mel - an angel who is sent to spy on the devil himself. So, she signs up for a job in his company. Easy, right? :D:D:D I can't wait to see her in the den of sin and corruption. Who will convert who?? Will Luce make her fall or will she make an honest man out of Luce? This is getting more and more interesting.
This was a very short read that was more an introduction/background to an upcoming new book. I gave it 4 stars because it did pique my interest. I am intrigued with the concept of an angel of a girl becoming involved with Hell. I don't want to give any spoilers which is difficult not to do in a very short story. The short story did accomplish its objective because now I will check into the book when it is released at the end of the month.
This is a short story that Demelza Carlton uses to lure you in and make you want to read more. I read this and decided I definitely wanted to read See You in Hell, book 2. I LOVED it. I love Melody Angel and all of the quirky, kooky characters in this series. I can't wait for more.
This is an author I have never read before. A very short story and seems like a nice lead into the regular series. I liked the characters from the beginning because they made sure to give them interesting personalities. The setup was not what I thought it was going to be and so it was a nice surprise to see where they were going with this.
Melody 'Mel' Angel hates job interviews and this one is shaping up to be the interview from Hell. From the grumpy receptionist to the disturbingly demonic interview panel and the sleazy CEO, it seems landing her first job is the least of Mel's worries. Can she make it out of the office without selling her soul?
The ending actually caught me by surprise and has made me want to read a bit more of this series, at least the next book to see if it can keep my interest.
Welcome to Hell (Mel Goes to Hell #1) by Demelza Carlton is a short story to introduce the reader to to Mel and her world, and what a strange world it is! Her assignment next will be to go to Hell and be, well, you have to read the story to find out...cute intro.
Series: Mel Goes to Hell #1 Category /Genre: Paranormal, Humor, Short Story Received from: Amazon purchase (free) Recommended for: 18+ Grammar/editing: A – near perfect
This is the first book in the trilogy, actually a short story and it is available on Amazon as a free book. They do need to be read in order.
Everyone knows that we all work in Hell. It doesn’t matter where you work, it is hell.
Now imagine if the devil – the real red-skinned, horns on his head, pointy tailed, Lucifer was your boss. No, really.
Now imagine that he has a plan to take over the world.
As an Angel, it would be your job to try to put a blockade to that, right? Of course, first, you have to get the job to be on-site.
Now, imagine that interviews are your own personal brand of Hell.
Mel (Melody Angel) has been asked to participate in an interview at The Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation. She is to take a look around and see what she can find out during the interview.
I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous look into corporate interviews and the trials of being a commuter. The story is set in Australia, as is the author’s real life, so there is some mental adjustment needed for the American brain and experiences.
I made the mistake of reading book two before this one. SEE YOU IN HELL does stand on its own, but why miss out on reading the short-story first? I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
The author, Demelza Carlton, has written a unique perspective on heaven and hell. She has presented them in a corporation capacity were the employees are encumbered with tasks related to the company’s expansion and interest. The Hell Corporation is set as any other company, and Heaven has sent an Angel, Melody Angel or just Mel, in to gain corporate secrets and information. Mel is sent to acquire a job inside The Hell Corporation, called Health, Environment, Life, and Lands Corporation by Archangel Raphael, to find out the extent of their power. Also, she is to see Lucifer is around and take him down. “The more power Hell gets, the harder they’ll be to take down, and we have to stop them. We can’t let Lucifer win,” is what, the uneasy and a little distraught , Mel is told by Raphael. Mel gets the job and as much as she isn’t particularly happy about sets out to get the job done. Welcome to Hell: A Short Story (Mel Goes to Hell Series Book 1) is well written and amusing. The author has incorporated a sense of humor into her writing. The use of the corporate world alone is hilarious. But she finds the humorous side of religion, demons, and angels, in which have been given human personality along with all the humanistic imperfections. The book is, in a word, entertaining.
Welcome To Hell by Demelza Carlton 4 out of 5 Stars
HELL, haha, that about describes how most people feel about their work place, so what a creative, fun premise for a story! Mel Angel goes in to interview for Health, Environment, Life, and Lands Corporation with Lilith who she swears has a red tinge to her eyes and two gentlemen who appear to own a forked tongue and a tail respectively. What is she getting into? As she's leaving the interview she meets the CEO Luce and he gives her the impression he'd like to show her some top secret corporate policy.
After returning home and talking to Raphael, the owner of Helpful Angels Agency job placement services, she finds out she's got the job but she's not sure it's one she wants to keep. Help Heaven find out if Lucifer is on Earth planning a takeover or take a much needed holiday to Korea? Hard decisions every girl must make!
What an intriguingly amazing idea! I can't wait to read See You In Hell!
*This was a no-cost download on Amazon I chose to read prior to my review of Ms.Carlton's book* Pepper, My Secret Book Spot
I think the author must have worked in some of the same office environments that I have (smirk)....she nailed this a little too well, and the whole play on HELL for the corporation name was brilliant. Not only was it really funny though, and the satire and comparisons to corporate life well done, but the character of Mel was really sympathetic and fun to read, and really ended up being the thing to make it more than just a running gag, but a full-on intro to a fun new world and series of stories. The author's world-building was done really well too, which can be difficult in a short piece, giving us just enough to know exactly what I needed to know without giving too much away or bogging the reader down in too much detail at the front end. It makes you want to know more about the character and world without being annoyed and/or frustrated.
Perfect intro to a series, and a great teaser on what's to come...
Welcome to Hell by Demelza Carlton is a hilarious introduction to the Hell Corporation. Good for some giggles and laughs as Demelza pokes fun at Hell. Meet Lucifer, the CEO and quite the hunk. He’s already got an evil glint in his eye when he literally runs into Mel as she is applying for a job. How would you prepare for a job at HELL Corporation? (Health Environments Life and Lands Corporation) Raphael at the Helpful Angels Agency tells her Mel has the job. She would be at Hells door promptly at nine. Demelza describes Mel’s commute on the train after the interview. I couldn’t help but chuckle as she talks about the briefcase, but I burst out belly laughing when she talked about farting. Does an Angel fart?
I picked up Welcome To Hell by Demelza Carlton for FREE on Amazon. Check it out if you feel the need to have a chuckle or two.
In this short prequel, the angelic Mel finds even her saintly patience tested during her job interview at Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation -- HELL. Her interview includes glimpses of a tail, flicks of a forked tongue, and slashes of claws.
Demelza Carlton offers delicious humor and satire in Welcome to Hell, the prequel in the Mel Goes to Hell series.
"The man behind Mel almost fell on top of her. When he straightened up, she became far more intimately acquainted with the stranger’s briefcase than she’d ever thought possible. She thought about accidentally stomping on his foot, but decided that would only make the situation worse, because if he jumped up, the briefcase would go up, too. With the corner of the briefcase jammed between her cheeks, she idly wondered what would happen if she farted."
WELCOME TO HELL is an introduction to the complete novel, due out in April 2014. It's intriguing, funny, clever, and actually pretty scary, in that considering the idea of Hell as a corporation bent on controlling the people, resources, and virtually everything else on Earth doesn't seem so far-fetched these days!
Demelza Carlton is a gifted storyteller with a knack for finding the humor in even the most stressful of situations. When Mel – somewhat reticent angel Melody Angel – is sent undercover to work at the HELL Corporation to see what CEO Lucifer himself is up to, both clever humor, surprises, and nail-biting tension ensue.
Entertaining and imaginative, WELCOME TO HELL will charm and engage you!
Welcome to Hell is the prequel to Ms. Carlton's upcoming series that parodies office culture--Mel Goes to Hell. Melody is being assigned to work at the Health, Environment, Life and Lands ("HELL") Corporation by the angelic temp agency headed by Raphael. Others have succumbed to temptation and have lost their angelic ways. Will Mel?
Due to privatization, the HELL Corporation controls many functions formerly handled by the government. Internally, HELL Corporation is as bureaucratic as the government it replaces. As a dark comedy, Ms. Carlton develops the mythological traits associated with her characters. Office workers will immediately identify the hellish characters and their nasty behaviors.
For someone that spent 20 years in an office environment, this short novella made me smile and smirk. Ms. Carlton created a fun satire that points out many of the old standbys of an office. Don't we all feel like we are starting down a path to "hell" when we have to go interview for a new job...oh and start one, too?
Great read if you need something to pass the time at the copier or reception desk that will make you laugh at the other yahoos in the office, especially the bosses!
Prior to second thoughts, I thought that writing a review for such a short prequel a silly and pointless proposition. Even if otherwise titled a "teaser", I would think it not worthy of a review.
That was my first inclination. I had second thoughts, however, that acknowledged the simple fact that Ms Carlton accomplished what she obviously intended, and for that I rate this shorty-short teaser with 5 stars.
I want this book badly. I want it now... NO, make that YESTERDAY! lol
A sample is a tough thing to pull off. You have to know how much to giveaway and what to include to get readers thirsty for more. The author did a really great job giving us exactly what we needed. We learned a lot about the main character, the world the story is set in...got a little bit of history on the world and a preview of what we should expect. In the big "villain" was fleshed out enough to prepare us for the full story.
Mel Angel goes for an interview in HELL......quirky and amusing slant for a story involving all the familiar names. Raphael is Mel's boss at the temp agency that has sent her for the interview. while at the corporation she meets the CEO, Luce Iblis, who is immediately taken with her. Could this turn into a strange love story between the angel 'spy' and the devil himself?? This was just a taster book and now I can't wait to read the full size first book.
Mel applies for a job with Health, Environment, Life and Lands - “Good Afternoon, Welcome to Hell” ... these few words set the tone for the whole story. Funny but with rather too many underlying truths! Reminds me of a government department I once worked for which shall remain nameless ... I'm really looking forward to the next book!
Welcome To Hell. I really do keep trying to avoid books that are a part of a series but this one I don't know why or how but this one just captured me and it was I had to read it. Would you sell your soul for a Job that you know the interview was from hell? This isn't your everyday story. Who knew a Job interview could be so bad?! But come on and read Welcome To Hell.
welcome to Hell is a short novella about an angel interviewing for a job at the HELL corporation. it has definitely whetted my appetite for more of the story and was well written.
I tend to stick to authors I like and Demelza Carlton is one of them. I won’t be happy until I’ve read everything she has produced. There is something so skilful about the way she writes, which is at the same time raw and humorous. Mel is my kind of girl. I entered the novel thinking that the job interview scenario was real, forgetting that the title was ‘Welcome to Hell,’ and was lured into this peculiar world like a lamb to the slaughter. The presence of horns and tails on the interviewing panel was genius but took me by surprise.
I was disappointed when the last page came and went and wanted more. I’ve already bought the next installment. Even though I knew that the work was a short story before I began reading, the characterisation was amazing. Mel is plucky, brave, unfazed by the bizarre presence of demons at her job interview and also immensely entertaining. I read the ‘briefcase up the bum’ incident on Demelza Carlton’s blog and still smiled reading it again in the book.
Lucifer already reminds me of a manager I once had, all powerful, slightly menacing and incredibly lecherous. I can’t wait to see what antics he gets up to. There is something about the way that Demelza Carlton writes that is so subtly tongue in cheek; it gets me every time. It doesn’t seem to matter what sort of emotion the scene demands, she manages to make the reader dance to the author’s tune effortlessly.
I’ve never read a series about angels and demons portrayed in this way. It’s really different. The word ‘black comedy’ springs to mind but as always, Carlton is in a league of her own, carving out her own route and mesmerising the reader with her colourful, well-drawn characterisation. Demelza Carlton is a craftswoman, a literary hypnotist and I am condemned to sinking my precious time and hard-earned cash willingly into another of her addictive series.
It is a fast paced, lighthearted, short book. I think it is more in a series form maybe?
Premise is simple and enjoyable I guess. Lucifer (Luce) is feeling stuck and bored in his hell domain and is looking for something to spice up his life. So, he decides to branch out of hell and has decided to take base on Earth. Along with his fellow demons and mistress Lilith he sets up base with his company - Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation aka (HELL) corporation. Thus, begins his amassing of souls via infiltration in various corporations, government etc. to strengthen his hold by corrupting the innocent. To counteract the devil's meddling, Angels have set up their own temp agency along with newbie angels and other archangels. Their job is to stay uncorrupted, resist the lure of the demons and infiltrate Hell corporation. By keeping an eye on them and report back. Needless to say, not all angels are demon proof.
Mel, is an angel and Raphael sends her as a temp to Hell Corp to apply for the job and spy for the angels. Despite her misgivings and unwillingness to do this she agrees to be a spy for the angels and work at Hell. Luce is very intrigued by Mel and wants to find out more. But, Mel on the other hand, is totally turned off my Luce's charms. She thinks he's a douche and avoids him at all point. The job is new and she's still trying to figure things out. She has realized he's Lucifer himself disguised as the CEO. The cat and mouse game has begun...
The story is short, simple, fun in a way and continues in the next book....
While I don't usually read anything from the paranormal or supernatural genre, this book was a nice breath of fresh air. I really enjoy Demelza's writing - it was engaging, humorous, and easy to read. I was able to zone out and just enjoy the book without thinking too much about strange word usage or sentence structure. I'm inspired to check out more of Demelza Carlton's work!
In this book, hell is a corporation here on earth which controls the health and justice systems, and is working toward controlling all government departments. Sounds like reality, not fiction! Melody Angel is working undercover, so to speak, to hopefully change the current situation.
This book is a brief intro for See You In Hell, which is due out April 2014.
Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation - HELL. Melody Angel is sent to infiltrate HELL corporation and find out what Lucifer is up to. Truly, does she really have to accept the job and sign her soul - er, working contract? Shouldn't Raphael send archangels instead? Seriously, what can possibly go wrong with having an Angel working in hellish enviroment?
Fun short story, Welcome to Hell is an intro to Mel Goes to Hell series. At first I didn't know what to expect as I started to read... then I laughed - a helluva lot. And it is just a beginning.
I can't wait to continue with the next installment! :)
Hell: The Offices of Heath, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation. Run by Lucifer, it is working on consolidating the power of government services under its wing, so to speak. Raphael needs an agent inside and Mel is his second choice. His first choice didn’t come back. Armed with Angel wings and her lucky bra, Mel faces down Lilith and a pair of demons only to run into Lucifer, er, Luce Iblis, literally on the way out.
Welcome to Hell is a short story that sets the stage for Carlton’s first book in the series, Mel Goes to Hell. Lucifer has escaped the pit and he’s taking on the modern world of business. This is a funny blend of the worlds of reality, myth, and the paranormal. Light in tone, funny, and just a tad bit racy.
