Born of Gilded Mountains

Rate this book
When newcomer Mercy Windsor arrives in Mercy Peak in 1948 after a scandal shatters her gilded world as Hollywood's beloved leading lady, she is determined to forge a new life in obscurity in this time-forgotten Colorado haven. She purchases Wildwood--an abandoned estate with a haunting history--and begins to restore it to its former glory. But as she does, her every move tugs at the threads of that mountain's lore, unearthing what became of her long-lost pen pal, Rusty Bright, and the whereabouts of the infamous Galloping Goose Engine No. 8, which vanished years ago, along with the mailbag it carried, whose contents could change the course of countless lives. Not to mention another fabled treasure that--if found--could right so many wrongs. Among the towering mountains that stand as silent witnesses, the ghosts of the past entangle with the courage of the present to find a place where healing, friendship, and hope can abide amid a world forever changed.

Amanda Dykes is one of the most creative and talented storytellers I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Born of Gilded Mountains is a symphony of characters that resonate, pitch-perfect pacing, and a setting that sings. Settle in for a tale worth savoring down to the last note.

4.5/5 ✨

Every time I sit down to read one of Amanda's books, I make sure to set aside a decent amount of time--because you can't read one of Amanda's books and not get so invested in her storytelling. Her lyrical prose, deep themes, and cast of characters you can't help but feel are as real as friends are absolutely stellar. I loved the epistolary format of this story; it's so unique and fits the time period so perfectly that it made it feel even more authentic.

Born of Gilded Mountains is a beautiful story of friendship, grief, and a front-row seat to how God redeems & restores everything in our lives that feels broken beyond repair.

While it did take me a bit longer to get fully invested in this book compared to her other stories, I loved it nonetheless and absolutely recommend it!!

"The more I live, the more convinced I am that we were made to be held. Not to hold bitterness."

"What do we do when both our worlds are dark? We do what you said. We both go out and see it. We defy the dark."

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC of Born of Gilded Mountains. A positive review was not required, only my honest opinion. All thoughts are expressly my own.

Another beautiful story from Amanda Dykes. She’s become an auto-buy author for me, but I made myself wait instead of preordering Born of Gilded Mountains so I could buy it in person at an author event and have it signed. It was lovely to meet Amanda in person and chat a bit about writing—she’s as sweet and gracious as her books are.

This book is another sweet and gracious read, with wonderful friendships that push through heartache to restoration. One of my best friends started out as a pen pal (although we did meet in person before we started writing), so that aspect of the story was special to me. Rusty’s letter-writing style was hilarious but sneakily profound, and I loved seeing the principle of “iron sharpening iron,” with each friend strengthening the other when it was most needed.

I wanted to be friends with these characters and all the other, ahem, characters that made up the town of Mercy Peak. (Speaking of characters, I need more of Holden Huxley.) In some ways it reminded me of Mitford in Jan Karon’s beloved Mitford series. Amanda Dykes’s writing reminds me of Karon’s in other ways too—there may be hard things along the way, but I know that at the end it will be okay. The gentle romances Amanda writes are some of my favorites, so slow and sweet and affectionate, based on friendship and shared experience rather than instant physical attraction. At the same time, it was nice to read a Christian novel where singleness was just as valued, and not in a “who needs a man” kind of way.

When I saw Hollywood and scandal in the book description, I had a preconceived idea of what that probably meant, although I hoped it wasn’t so. I need not have feared. No spoilers, but I found it fascinating how the story weaved together historical details like mining life and the volatility of early film materials to create a unique situation that these specific characters would have had to deal with. Nothing generic or predictable. I guessed a few plot points, but that’s the other thing about Amanda’s books—I never mind being right, and I always sort of wonder if I was intended to figure it out all along.

It was also fun to learn the unusual history of how the mail got to the Colorado mountains in the 1940s. I absolutely loved how the contents of the lost mailbag, slowly unfolding for the reader, gave so much depth to “minor” characters who might otherwise be easily overlooked. So many stories, all woven into one.

I will say that this story requires some focus. The weaving in of newspaper articles and letters and lists and telegrams, and the way part of the backstory is told as a movie screenplay, really add a different dimension to the story (easier to read in paperback, I think). It meant I had to pay closer attention than I otherwise might, but that’s not a bad thing; I look forward to these books partly for that tension of needing to know what’s going to happen but wanting to slow down and savor the lyrical storytelling.

Treasure hunts always give me a twinge of “would anyone really figure out that clue?” but I didn’t mind suspending my disbelief through those moments. I had trouble fitting a few pieces of the puzzle into place, but it’s quite possible those are the places I gave in to curiosity and read too fast. This is a story to be savored as much as possible while holding your breath to find out what’s really going on.

If you want a beautifully lyrical tale of restoration, courage, new beginnings, and the power of friendship, Born of Gilded Mountains is for you. It’s not a loudly Christian story, but strands of quiet faith wend their way through the characters’ decisions to turn to the Maker of the mountains when nothing else can fill that void.

If I could give this book a hundred stars, I would. Yes, it's that good.

Let me count all the reasons I love it:

🏔️the beautiful friendship between the two main characters
🏔️the development and depiction of said characters
🏔️the gorgeous mountain setting
🏔️the lyrical prose - as close as you can get to poetry without actually begin poetry (and it doesn't get in the way of the story, either. If you ever felt that about Amanda Dyke's books before, maybe try this one, because I think it's probably more balanced in that way than her others.)
🏔️the intriguing mystery that is slowly uncovered
🏔️the townspeople... oh my goodness I ❤️ them. I seriously want to live there!
🏔️the imagery and delicious metaphors
🏔️the beauteous wording that had me highlighting all over the place
🏔️the fantastic sense of humor

There wasn't anything I didn't love. I loved it all. Favorite book of the year so far... BY FAR!

“In Mercy Peak, the fingerprints of God himself are impressed upon the mountains. In Mercy Peak, my very soul is held in those same hands. Not ushered into hiding at the first sign of scandal. In Mercy Peak, the red carpet is a mountain that rises up to meet my humble feet and carry me to heights and depths I’ve never known. The air is wild, the winds are free, the people are good and real, and life is true.” — Mercy Windsor

❤️ MY THOUGHTS: Wow! Never have I read a book like this before! Though I struggled at first with the format and different timelines, I am grateful that I continued reading because this very well may be my favorite book of the year.

Amanda Dykes is a gifted storyteller whose writing is captivating, beautifully poetic, and beyond compare. With incredible imagery and attention to detail, I found myself completely immersed in this story of a mountain that is not only home to a secret treasure and a missing Galloping Goose, but also to a small community of people who have weathered together the high peaks and deep valleys of love and loss.

Though it is a story of mystery and intrigue, it is also one of family and friendship, hope and faith, healing and forgiveness, weakness and perseverance, redemption and restoration.

It is a story that subtly and ever so brilliantly illuminates God’s sovereignty and grace, as well as His love and mercy.

And it is an enchanting tale that takes you deep into the mountain and deep into the homes and hearts of its characters who by the end feel more like family.

Ahh...Where to begin with this review?! This is easily one of my favorite and most anticipated books this year if not the most. I always feel so at home in Amanda Dykes's books because the themes and writing speak directly to my soul. BOGM brought this enjoyment to a whole new level with a setting in the breathtaking beauty of my home state of Colorado! If a book was home, this would be it. The way the Rockies and God's creative craftsmanship were so artistically and expertly described and connected to the way He holds our hearts and crafts our stories filled me up, blew my mind, and made my heart ache for that familiar and majestic landscape.
As usual, I teared up and resonated with these characters' stories, especially Mercy's. I loved how the tight-knit community of people steadfastly gave each other grace and hope, and I felt as though I was part of their community throughout the story. A true redemption and restoration story, all of the characters were restored their dreams by God, reminding the reader of God's promise to "restore the years the locust has eaten" in His perfect time and love.
Rusty was such a fun character! Her humorous and unique wit and fire kept me laughing. Her and Mercy's sisterhood was a great example of how we can be there for each other in our darkest moments and let our vulnerability be a bridge to God and each other. The pen pal dynamics, Hollywood field notes, and some script style writing took me a minute to get used to, but really added to the atmosphere and made me more immersed in the story.
The amount of historical content was also amazing. Until now, I had no idea that the Galloping Geese were even a thing and unique to Colorado! Trains and the history surrounding them has always been fascinating to me, so I was thrilled to learn about these unique railcars.
I truly feel so privileged that there are talented Christian authors out there who use their God given gifts to pen such brilliant books. Do yourself and your soul a huge favor and read this! Whether or not you're going through a challenging season in life we all need to be reminded of God's kindness in this world and His unending hope.
I also highly recommend watching the Mad Lit Musings podcast (hosted by Jaime Jo Wright) for this book before reading for some behind the book info and more wisdom and fascinating history!
🏞 Then I will make up to you for the years That the swarming locust has eaten.~Joel 2:25
🏞For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power ~ Romans 1:20

🚨Content warning: somewhat mild descriptions of child abuse and neglect, alcoholism, and death of loved ones

Beautiful. As much as I adore Whose Waves These Are, Born of Gilded Mountains may have just taken its place as my favorite Amanda Dykes novel. She has outdone herself.

The setting was the stuff of my daydreams, only better. The mountain treasure hunt and the Hollywood folios were so cool. And I loved seeing the focus on friendship rather than romance. Dykes does such an amazing job of showing hope in everyone’s story. We need more novels like this. Highly recommend!

This book was so cool! And very uniquely written. I have never come across a story told in this way. Told through the regular storytelling way yes, but in addition to that it is through letters, movie scripts, newspaper interviews and the like. This may be confusing for some readers but I found it so cool! Set in the 1940s, This story focuses on two women who were pen pals growing up. Marybeth and Rusty. They have lost connection with each other but find each other again when Marybeth, also known as Mercy Windsor, the movie actress, comes to Rusty’s hometown. I just really loved this story! I loved how they were reconnected! It was so beautiful! I also enjoyed the treasure hunt aspect that the women hunted. And of course I liked the Christian message. Overall, a fantastic and unique story and I definitely recommend!

“I sometimes think, when our dreams seem impossible to us, perhaps we just haven’t seen yet how God will chase after our hearts with those very dreams, in the unlikeliest ways.”

Beloved friendships, second chances, restoration, mystery, classic Hollywood, a treasure hunt, a hint of romance, & beautiful prose made Amanda Dykes touching story another winner! I loved this slow burn mystery that quickly wove its way into my heart. It’s a story that makes you want to hold your friends close & truly treasure your loved ones.

Marybeth Spatts never imagined how her life would change when a school assignment pairs her with a pen pal miles away in Mercy Peak, Colorado. As she & Ruby “Rusty” Bright correspond over years, their friendship deepens. When Rusty’s letters suddenly stop, she believes the worst. Now years later as a successful Hollywood actress, Mercy Windsor aka Marybeth visits the small Colorado mountain town after scandal forces her to leave. She purchases an old estate which holds the keys to Rusty’s disappearance & a lost treasure. As she works to restore the estate & breathe new life into Rusty’s town, she finds more than she dreamed.

This story held such nostalgia. Set mainly in 1948, I loved all the nods to old Hollywood & those classic actors like Cary Grant, Clark Gable, & many others. I loved the friendship between Rusty & Marybeth. It reminded me so much of Anne & Diana from Anne of Green Gables. Rusty’s letters are a delight & I loved how she expressed herself.

The mystery was carefully woven throughout and involves Rusty’s father who made a pact with his three friends as young boys. Clues are left in various places around Mercy Peak which point to the treasure. There’s also a missing mail car known as Galloping Goose Engine No. 8 which plays a significant role in the story. The lost mailbag in particular held so many secrets that would have changed lives.

I also loved the beautiful messages of restoration, appreciating life as it is, & the power of community & friendship. Told in a unique style, the story incorporates letters, movie scripts, press releases, journal entries, & written clues.

Highly recommend to inspirational historical fiction fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher through AustenprosePR. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided. 4-4.5 stars!

4.5 ⭐️s—This book was one that I unexpectedly loved! I’m not a big historical fiction girlie—at least I thought I wasn’t. This story was so captivating and beautifully written that I may be rethinking my stance.

On the heels of her Hollywood fallout, actress Mercy Windsor flees to Mercy Peak, Colorado. She’s been aiming to go there ever since she began corresponding with her childhood penpal Rusty Bright.

Mercy Peak is Rusty’s hometown—and also the home of the mysterious disappearance of a steam engine, the estate home of an odd and paranoid deceased man with tons of secrets, and a fabled treasure to be unearthed.

This book was full of mystery and intrigue. The theme of friendship ran deep as well as reconciliation, healing, and grace. The writing was lovely and I was eager to know how the story would play out.

I really, really enjoyed it! So grateful to the publisher for providing me with a free copy to review.

Fabulous!!!! One of the best books I've read this year. Truly a pleasure to read this beautifully written story of hardship, healing, and hope. Author AmandaDykes is one of the most talented storytellers I've ever read! (And I read over a hundred books a year). Her thoughtful, lyrical stories are an absolute delight to read. Born of Gilded Mountains starts with young pen pals who become close friends through their charming letters, and shine light into each others lives for a time. It includes a wonderful cast of characters, a treasure hunt, friendship, banter, courage, finding light in the darkness, the unexpected paths our lives take, and a theme of 'it's never too late'.

I absolutely cherished each page, each journey, and each clue. The story had me gently turning pages and savoring every moment. Told through narration, letters, interviews, field notes, news articles, telegrams, screenplays, a pact between four friends, riddles, and coded messages, I couldn't out it down! I didn't race through it, and yet I still found myself not wanting it to end. Bravo AmandaDykes!

In embracing the ordinary, her characters find the extraordinary. "I think God made each moment and each moment matters."

I HIGHLY recommend Born of Gilded Mountains! My preordered copy has a special place on my keeper shelf!

Love the quote by Joan of Arc in the Author's Notes "Go forward bravely. Fear nothing. Trust in God; all will be well."

Born of Gilded Mountains by Amanda Dykes sweeps you into a breathtaking world where Colorado’s majestic peaks echo secrets of faith, love, redemption, and God’s sovereign grace. Mercy Windsor steps away from Hollywood’s dazzling lights to tread a path where true beauty isn’t found in fame, but in the quiet and profound restoration of forgotten places. This novel pulses with life—a heartbeat that mirrors the Creator’s handiwork, not only in the stunning landscape but in the intricately woven lives within it.

This is far from a mere tale of escape; it’s a captivating treasure hunt where the most precious prize is found in surrender and a renewed focus on what truly matters. Mercy’s journey, as she breathes life into the abandoned Wildwood estate, feels like a daring ascent up a rugged mountain—challenging, unexpected, and breathtakingly beautiful. The estate, once shrouded in silence and decay, becomes a sanctuary of rediscovered histories and profound revelations about God’s unwavering presence, even in the darkest and most sorrowful corners of life.

The friendship between Mercy and Rusty Bright shines like brilliant sunlight on fresh, radiant snow—pure, warming, and full of life. Rusty’s humor pierces through the heaviness, and their heartfelt, transparent letters are like trail markers guiding them toward healing and renewed hope. Together, they navigate loss and laughter, realizing that faith isn’t just a backdrop to their story; it’s the unwavering compass that steers them through every twist and turn.

The mysteries of the past weave through the present like hidden mountain trails, adding layers of intrigue and wonder. The pursuit of the lost mailbag, whispers of a treasure, and the conundrum of the missing Galloping Goose Railcar inject an exhilarating sense of adventure that’s mind-blowingly thrilling and deeply reflective. Yet, the true treasure here isn’t gold or jewels—it’s the discovery of divine purpose and the realization that God has been orchestrating every step, every stumble, and every victory with perfect precision.

What truly captivated me is how seamlessly the faith element flows through the narrative, like a life-giving stream—vital and refreshing—as Mercy and the other characters embrace God and His timeless promises.

Born of Gilded Mountains is a powerful reminder that life’s real journey isn’t just about finding the way forward—it’s about trusting the One who has already mapped out every path for each us. It’s about recognizing God’s fingerprints in the valleys and the peaks, and knowing with absolute certainty that every step, no matter how uncertain, is leading us closer to Him. He will never leave us, and His presence shines through every page of this extraordinary story.

Amanda Dykes is such a spectacular writer. Her words wrap around you until they're embedded in the core of your being; until your emotions are splayed out for everyone to see.

At first, everything seemed disjointed, and I wondered how it would all fit together. But I've read nearly all of Amanda's books, and I know she's an expert weaver. And she weaved a beautiful, brilliant tale. A tale of heartbreak, of friendship, of mystery, of searching, of life.

So. If you don't mind ugly crying in front of your family, since you definitely will because some things just can't be helped, get this. Read it right now, no matter who you're around. Then we can talk about it. Because I so need to talk about the beauty of this story.

Oh my goodness this was such a great book to me! It was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! I read by way of audible and the voice over artist Sandy Dustin was AMAZING. The best I've heard. Wow. I was transported into this time. I felt like I was right there! Be sure to read the author's note at the end. That was some really good encouragement! Joel 2:25! There are a lot of things I'm believing and waiting for..that just some lost. .or like they will never happen. But I'm reminded that God knows how to redeem the time! And give you back (maybe in a way you don't expect) something you lost even better and specially made just for you!

There was a little part talking about being single and how that is just as important as being married...you'll know the part I'm talking about when you get there! I look forward to reading more Amanda Dykes! This book soothed my soul!

I remember having a pen pal when I was in elementary school, though I lost touch with her after that year. I wasn't a very good pen pal I guess. But Marybeth Spatts and Rusty stay friends their entire lives.

Marybeth and Rusty (Ruby) are matched as pen pals when they are 10 years old. Both are living in mining areas, both their fathers work for the mines, and both lost their mothers very early. Marybeth's life is not easy, her father isn't the best. Rusty has a good dad, telling her to be a good friend to Marybeth and be there when she needs. When Marybeth's life changes, her first instinct is to go to Colorado to Rusty, but when she gets there it is not at all like she dreamed.

Marybeth becomes a Hollywood actress and changes her name to Mercy Winsor, the one everyone wants in their pictures. But after a mistake on a film, she retreats to Colorado and buys the home no one wants in Mercy Peak. Because that is where Rusty is from, and she will do anything to be close to Rusty, even if it is too late.

The story is a great mystery within a mystery, but it is also a story of finding yourself. Of living with grief, but knowing there is good in the world too. I enjoyed this story very much, I could hardly put it down, and was very happy for the characters in the end.

Anything I can think of to say about Amanda Dykes’s writing pales. As I opened her newest book, I was reminded on the very first page of just why I love her writing so much: it’s so beautifully descriptive, with rich metaphor and symbolism used to convey word pictures that transport the reader. She expertly uses the English language to build paragraphs that make me want to go back and reread them again just to enjoy their…rightness. This type of writing is unusual in contemporary authors, but it’s a writing that I deeply value.

Gilded Mountains is a story that contains both peaks and valleys. Readers get to experience the mountain peaks of deep friendships, loyal community, & a picturesque setting of a tight knit mountain town. But true to life, readers also encounter the valleys of grief, misunderstanding, and how we respond when life looks different than we imagined.
Through the use of narrative, letters, and articles, you’ll be taken on a spell-binding treasure hunt using clues, codes, and ciphers. Mostly a story of friendship, there’s a thread of romance and a bit of wit and clever humor mixed in. It’s a story of grit & resilience, of hardship & healing, of redemption & restoration, of hope. Ultimately, it’s a story of “the great and undeserved kindness of this life”.

Amanda is a masterful storyteller who weaves an intricate story, a beautifully complicated tapestry of details and events; this being said, it took me a little bit to get oriented to the story and I maybe missed a few “stitches”.

😇 glorifying to God in its references to Him and its appreciation for His created world; many strong Gospel themes; characters have authentic and meaningful spiritual conversations
😍&🤐: no language or bedroom content!

This book was challenging to get into. That's typical for Amanda Dyke. As I slowed down my thoughts, I found myself invested in the story. After the halfway point, I began to connect with Marybeth and Rusty. I was cheering for them.

By the time the ending came, I saw that the author used her signature prose writing to complete the story in such a way that was affirming and connected all the dots.

Sadly, while I would still recommend this story, I didn't love it or feel as connected as her other books. The premise is good, the characters are real. But the format of the story made it hard to tell what was going on. It felt like I was missing something as the story came to the end.

If you like Mysteries and old Hollywood and slow paced stories, you will enjoy this despite my opinion 😉

My first Amanda Dykes read. I'd heard her writing style was unique. I'd like to explain quite a bit for those trying to decide if this one is for you.

WHAT I LOVED:
*absolutely wonderful faith journey content
*two main characters as B.F.F.s
*the author's descriptive, flowery writing style (excellent)
*the vintage vibe (1800s prologue, then jumps between 1928 & 1948)
*the personalities & word choices of Mercy Peak townsfolk (so cute)
*the entire premise

WHAT WAS CHALLENGING:
*the way the story was formatted
*I felt jostled & lost for the first several chapters
*At chapter 5 it became easier but...
*I had to work too hard to keep up. ;)

For reference, I began with an ebook copy and then picked up the audiobook at about 20% in, thinking that would help.....

1) I can do dual timeline.

2) I OFTEN read very difficult, original history texts and classic books for pleasure. I've read several books that are epistolary, and it's great.

This one just felt way more difficult to keep up with than it had to be. And didn't like the bogged down feeling I had. It's also around 390 pages.

EXAMPLE:
It starts out in 1894 for the prologue, then jumps to a screenplay sheet that's in three acts (one main character is an actress).

Then we get field note sheets, then narration in 1948, then a letter in 1928, then a recipe, then a letter by someone else in 1932, then back to narration in 1948, then flashback to an old letter, then back to ‘modern’ day 1948 with narration about that……and that’s just up to the start of chapter 5!

At chapter 5, it does get easier.

Nearing the midpoint, got bored, BUT THEN... two girls start to solve an old mystery of something that was stolen - they are digging around a late wealthy man’s home and out in the wilderness on the mountain.!

I was back in... liking it! Then I felt like it went on too long.

The writing is amazing. The storyline is unique and great. It made me smile in many places, made me cry a couple of times (grief talk and such).

No language, no spice, nothing inappropriate whatsoever. YAY!

So, I've come up with 3 stars because I appreciate ALL the positives.

I appreciate the complimentary advanced copy I received and all opinion is my own.

Just finished this absolutely exquisite book.
It will be one of (if not the one) my favorite and most loved and memorable reads of the year.
It will take awhile to write my full review.
I didn’t think I’d read an Amanda dykes book I’d like more than All the Lost Places… but this one definitely surpasses it!!

Born of Gilded Mountains is exceptionally creative. This author has such a way of creating a layered story. She also includes Easter eggs that harken back to her previous books. I love the inclusion of letters, news articles, and interviews in the narrative.

The characters are incredibly endearing. Though her recent years have been in the spotlight of Hollywood, Mercy’s early years were filled with turmoil and strife. She finds comfort and friendship in her pen-pal Rusty, whose own life has also been one of hardships. Both girls rely on the letters to get them through and remind them of hope-glimmers in life. When Mercy’s Hollywood career comes to a halt, she finds solace in renewing an old estate in her long-lost pen pals home town. What follows is a treasure hunt, a mystery, friends that become family, and a sprinkling of romance.

Mercy Springs and the occupants thereof sparkle and hum with life. The town seems like a secondary character in and of itself, and those that live and love there take care of their own. I love the theme of finding the good in the hard, and that’s so present in this story. The reminder that we can bear each other’s burdens is so needed, and I love the emphasis on friendship.

Readers looking for a story with heart, depth, and a bit of whimsy are sure to love Born of Gilded Mountains.

I received an advanced copy of this novel; a positive review was not required.

The author has penned another magical tale that will resonate with readers long after the last page has been read. Her prose is poetic, mesmerizing in its beauty. Meant to be read slowly and savored. She spins a story through which is woven the wonder of a Creator who is at work in our lives, breathing life and healing into the broken pieces and unexpected paths our lives take.

Born of Gilded Mountains is a story of two young pen pals who find the friendship of a lifetime. Told through a blend of traditional narration, letters and articles, the author skillfully paints a poignant picture of two young girls. I found this to be an excellent format, with new clues as well as details from the past skillfully parceled out.

I cherished every word, every emotion, becoming acquainted with the heartwarming citizens of Mercy Peak as they wrapped themselves around my heart. As they work towards a common goal, I found the story was more about the journey. With each page, I'd uncover another layer, another description that revealed truth and light. Rusty's and Mercy's story will have a permanent place on my keeper shelf.

****I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and Netgalley. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I loved the premise of this, and the characters were outstanding, but I had a bit of trouble following the plot. Dykes has a gorgeous way with words, and her writing is as lyrical as ever, but I was confused/lost more often than felt right. (I read the ebook version of this book, and it has a lot of different...kinds?...of writing. There are scripts and notes and the narrative itself, etc. And I sort of wonder if a hardcopy of the book might have been a little easier to follow, given all the different typefaces and typesetting?)

DNF - I really wanted to love this but it's not working out. I love the romanticized style of writing and the beautiful turns of phrase, but there needs to be more distinction between characters. All characters male, female, young, old - have the same voice and poetic phrasing. I would keep going but it's just far too distracting to me 😭 I wish the flowery writing had been saved for one character, but it's across every page and it's just not believeable 😭

I received a free copy from netgalley.

This is my first Amanda Dykes book. It will not be my last. With the skill of a master storyteller, Amanda creates a story about redeeming lost friendships and lost chances that will give you hope. The audio narrator brought each well-defined character to life. Do yourself a favor and take this deep dive into this wonderful world.
