Everbound University is the mandatory graduate school for anything that goes bump in the night. Not going isn’t an option, unless you want to be hunted down for illegally inhabiting the mortal world.

All legacies — the descendants of the Four Houses — are required to attend because we’re all cursed, and the only way to break our curses is through binding our hearts in a quintet. Becoming part of a quintet is a dream come true. Destiny fulfilled. A gods-given, merciful blessing.

For me, it’s a hard pass. I can’t be bound to anyone else. Trust me, it wouldn’t end well.

So when I’m placed in a quintet, I promptly reject all four of my matches for their own good. But these powerful, gorgeous, high-profile legacies have no idea how to handle rejection, because…

The cutthroat blood fae shows me his soft side. The charming dragon shifter won't leave me alone. The unhinged nightmare prince calls me darling. And the gorgeous ice elemental is as overprotective as he is cold.

They're the kind of deadly perfection that draws attention. Which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid, since no one can know my secret. I'll do whatever it takes to make them decide I’m not worth the chase. The problem is, no matter what I do to make them hate me, it only seems to have the opposite effect…

Oh my god, HOW IS THIS BOOK NOT MORE POPULAR?! Excuse me while I make this series my entire personality for the next 60 business days. I think this might be my top read of 2024 🥹

I wasn't sure how much I'd like this, because this book has the reverse rejected mates trope, so the fmc is the one doing the rejecting. And I usually prefer my mmc to be the one to do that especially if it's a why choose. But surprisingly, the reverse way WORKS so freaking well in this story.

BRIEF SUMMARY

In a world where monsters and humans live together, Maven, our fmc who's a human, suddenly discovers that she has the ability to wield magic, not very common since Legacies (what they call monsters) are the only ones who are born with magic, but not impossible. When that happens, humans have to join the Legacies in a mandatory academy - the school of magic, if you will.

Maven wants nothing but to survive the academy unnoticed. She's been doing so well acting like a boring, bland, and unforgettable student, until Seeking Day comes and she finds herself not only being matched to four of the most powerful, high-profile legacies, but also the keeper (meaning she's the central) of said matches.

Maven has her own secret agenda, and being in a quintet will only ruin her plans. So, the only way to get rid of this problem is for her to reject her fated mates.

“It’s best if you four appeal for a new keeper because I won’t be in this quintet. There’s no point dragging this on, so I’ll be on my way. Let’s not cross paths again. Better luck next time.”

Isn't she SO sweet???

Except that she doesn't anticipate her matches to be so devoted to her.

The way I blushed and giggled seeing them get so captivated by Maven, and Maven completely not giving a shit about any of them. Romance is not dead!!!

There's just something about four powerful monsters wanting to get to know you despite you doing everything under the sun to make them hate you that just... screams true love.

We have Baelfire Decimus ; the rare golden dragon shifter - one of the last of its kind. Who's basically the golden retriever of the group. He's so obsessed with Maven and a little delulu (ah, he's just like us).

I try leaning down to capture her attention, but she keeps her eyes forward.
Awe. Who knew my mate would be so shy?

Love his positivity!! Denial is obviously just a river in Egypt.

~

My personal favorite, Crypt DeLune ; the psychotic Nightmare Prince. He's the oldest & the one who waited for a match the longest. Everyone is pretty much scared of him, he eats dreams to survive & he snaps necks without batting an eye. He is your worst nightmare. Literally.

“There is none but you for me,” Crypt quietly warns over my shoulder.

But he's also only soft for Maven. Like I said, romance is not dead!

And my second favorite Silas Crane ; the brooding, intelligent, powerful blood fae. Who knows a lot of deadly spells. He's grumpy, and cursed with a paranoid demon in his head...except that being near Maven seems to quiet his fears, something that he did not expect.

“I’ll bleed them dry if that’s what you ask of me.”

Top 10 Most Romantic Love Declaration, if you ask me.

~

And the one who I think I'll be obsessed with in book 2, Everett Frost ; the mysterious, aloof, cold (literally, it's his magic) Professor. He's not the most open in the group, and he's the only one who seems to make it his mission to distance himself from Maven. This delights Maven because that's one less legacy to shoo.. at first, at least.

Smiles.
My stomach flips. I swear on everything holy that she is the most beautiful creature I’ve ever laid eyes on.
And now I know I’m blushing because my ears feel warm.

Except that he's secretly pining for her. But something is holding him back from getting close to Maven.

When the cold Professor who you think hates you can't help but blush because you smile >>>>>>

~

Oh to have four of the most wanted, influential, high-profile, extremely powerful monsters obsessed over you. But here's the catch: these four legacies don't get along with each other.

They grew up together because their families are in the same high-profile circle but they never got along. Their banter is the absolute best part of this book. Them trying to work together to convince Maven they're worth a try??? Gold. This is why I think this works for me, as it's not the usual RH setup. I love watching them trying to bond with Maven individually & develop feelings for her that are completely separate and have nothing to do with the other guys.

I'd like to classify this a slow burn, even though they all pretty much wanted to be with her after Seeking - but they didn't get together then. And probably won't for a while. They want her - but idk if it's love yet, you know? So you still feel the pining. It's awesome.

And I freaking love Maven. Like, a lot. She reminds me SO much of Aelin (though the story is NOTHING like ToG).

She's fierce, so closed off, might come off as a little rude, and unfeeling, but she's also deadly (though she makes sure no one knows this) and she's so unintentionally hilarious.

“Put that shit away before you make my mate sick, too.”
“Oh—sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up right now,” Dirk says quickly, shooting me an apologetic grimace just as I take my first bite of mashed potatoes. “Sorry if that ruined your appetite, Maven.”
I finish chewing and swallow. “Oh. Right. That’s disgusting.”
Bael’s brows go up. “You’re taking another bite.”
“Because I’m hungry.”

I LOVE HERRRRRR please she's so dry & blank & just... doesn't give a shit. She doesn't want to be this way, she just thinks it's safer that way - for reasons we don't get to know yet. But what I love so much about her is she doesn't wallow, or throw a pity party over it. She moves on and gets shit done. Ugh. I'm in love.

There were a few flaws I noticed, for sure. Like I wish we got to see the guys before Seeking, see their dynamic before they found out about Maven so we could get more sense of them being this powerful beings. And I'm sure Maven is not everyone's cup of tea and some people might find her annoying (I'LL FIGHT YOU...hehe jk.. but am I). BUT MOM I'M BLINDED BY LURVEEEEE. I will happily never take off my rose colored glasses when it comes to this!!

My main fear was I was afraid it would feel too much like an instalusty, instalovey mess. And I guess in some way it has a sprinkle of all that, but because they have a reason to like her; they're fated, and it's also expected in the legacy world to be in a quintet, it doesn't feel ridiculous to me. One of the most enjoyable RH for me, actually.

It's a crime that this book doesn't have the same hype as, like, The Bonds That Tie series. I think it's perfect for people who love it; in fact, I heavily recommend this book for people wanting similar vibes.

Off to the next book I go while praying real hard book 3 gets released SOON. Like, next week if possible. PLEASE MORGAN B. LEE 😭🙏

This book was a wild ride but it was also frustrating as all hell. Would it have hurt the author to have had more than a vague sprinkle of information every 10 chapters or so? Because it definitely hurt me. Granted this is still a 4 star review, would have been a 5 star had WE HAD MORE INFORMATION.

Ok Ok, I'm getting ahead of myself. I understand that the author has a very specific plan for this series and she does a GREAT job at keeping my attention even though the information is sparse. I hope I'm not being mean, I'm just frustrated because I truly loved this and just need to know more.

I have so many questions and I really really really need answers 😭

Had I known I was going to love this so much I would have started it closer to the next books release date because now I have 2 months to wait and stew coolcoolcool 😅

About the story:

The heroine was very hard-headed and tight-lipped about everything with everyone. It was pretty cool and interesting to have her go about rejecting her mates and them sticking to her like super glue. The guys were interesting to get to know. I LOVED how murderous and torture happy they were. Their one-liners were FANTASTIC! I have my favorites (Crypt and Baelfire ♡). I definitely still want to know what their individual curses are though and how they'll convince Maven to stay with them going forward.

The FMC was stoic, unphased, unemotional and could not give less of a f*ck about anything. She was giving Wednesday Addams. I get that there is probably a very deep and complex backstory to come, but I couldn't tell if she was angry or just inconvenienced. Maybe both 🤔

The ‘Wednesday’ personality became more apparent when we met her roommate. This seemed like a yin and yang situation. Her roommate was bubbly, outgoing, chatty and the complete opposite of miserable. I think this character just highlighted the real lack of emotions that the FMC showed.

You know that one kid in school who acted like studying or caring about anything was really uncool, so they put limited effort into anything. Yeah, that was the vibe I was getting. The FMC was just pretty numb to the world, which again I’m sure further backstory would explain, but I just don’t like her personality…

Disclaimer - I DNFed at 18%, so I can only comment on that 18%.

The other problem I had was the MEN. So I haven't had that much exposure to them or their characters, but they are intense. The synopsis for the book mentions the quintet and the binding and the whole destiny thing, but I don’t know about this band of dudes. Some are emitting golden retriever vibes, others are intense with the FMC because their pride is bruised. There are several reasons why they are being so forward. I love a bit of suspense and I don’t feel like I’m going to get that.

I just don’t think it’s my kind of fantasy, but I did just re-read all the bonds that tie books, so I don't think that helped.

If you have read it, do I need to just make it past the 20% mark ?

It's always good to read a well-written RH, now that the genre has gotten so saturated - it's like a breath of fresh air. Some definite improvement points here but overall an enjoyable day spent reading.

Our heroine, Maven (great name) is a late enroller at some university/finishing school-type institution for those with magical powers. As a human-born enchantress, she's often considered inferior to the Legacies (think Muggleborns vs purebloods). She's fine with that, since she's actually enrolled for her own ulterior motives. She has no desire to catch anyone's attention... so imagine her shock when she's revealed to be the mate of four powerful Legacies.

I LOVED that this is a 'reverse' rejected mate story, with the heroine doing the rejecting and the heroes simply refusing to be rejected. Maven is also a quietly funny and much stronger-willed than your typical RH heroine. I wish there had been a bit more chemistry, and more time devoted to all the heroes - some of them definitely come across as flatter than others - but overall, this is written well, flows well, and features an intriguing twist on some established tropes.

this was really different to my usual rh read!! for once, it was the fmc pushing everyone away and overall being a bitch (an iconic, badass bitch), and the mmcs were the cutie pies who were obsessed with her. such an enjoyable read - addictive, entertaining, unique. fun!

Not for me DNF

The writing style is really not to my taste. One of my pet hates is heroines who try too hard, to be hard. A lot of characters are written to have horrid backgrounds but you still can root for them. Suffice to say I couldn't get the frown off my face, I did not like the heroine. I'm sure there may be an interesting plot in there but not at the cost of wrinkles.

Blood Oath was not a book on my radar, but I decided to give it a chance after finding it on the why-choose site 🙈.
The fact that it hooked me from the beginning was a sure sign that it would be a good read, and oh boy, was I right. The fact that it's only 280 pages long feels a little cruel.

What to expect:
∘ Adult Dark Paranormal Romance
∘ Reverse Harem ― size: small (4)
∘ Academy setting
∘ Multiple POV
∘ Intriguing Worldbuilding
∘ Badass FMC (gives off Wednesday Addams vibes)
∘ Softhearted & cute, but obsessed MMCs
∘ Curses & secrets
Tropes:
∘ Fated Mates
∘ Forced Proximity
∘ Medium Burn
∘ Hidden Identity
∘ Soft only for her
∘ BDSM - Female Dominant/switch

Trigger Warnings: PTSD, mentions of child abuse, death, torture, graphic violence

Plot/Worldbuilding
Maven didn't come to Everbound University to find her fated mates, but that's exactly what she ends up with: a blood Fae, a dragon shifter, an ice elemental, and a nightmare prince—a complication she intends to ignore.

Everbound University is a school for Legacies, the term used for supernaturals in this book. These Legacies have been cursed by the gods, and the only chance of breaking that curse is by forming a quintet, a bonded group. Every year, a ceremony is held to find these quintets.

The plot, like our FMC, is shrouded in mystery and we don't find out what Maven's mission is until later on in the book, though there are a few hints scattered throughout.
Crumbs of information are provided, probably with the intention to keep us satisfied, but they only leave me hungry for more. I'm eager to uncover what Maven is hiding, who or what she is, and why she's convinced she'll be killed if the truth comes out.

Characters
Maven
Maven is a newly awakened caster, or so we're led to believe. Her past and her power are closely guarded secrets, ones even us, the readers, aren't privileged to know.
She's a strong character, a skilled fighter, with a sassy, albeit sometimes bitchy, attitude that still manages to charm the hell out of her mates.

The MMCs
Speaking of her mates...
She doesn't want them, and she makes that clear from the very beginning. Yet, they are not deterred in the slightest. On the contrary, they seem to take it as a challenge to win her over, and it was so freaking entertaining to watch them try to get over their animosity and their egos to impress her.

Their personalities were so well-highlighted, that I had no problem distinguishing between the four of them.
Silas, the studious cutthroat blood fae.
Crypt, the psycho and unhinged incubus, known as the nightmare prince that everyone fears.
Baelfire, the flirty goofy dragon shifter.
Everett, the cold and somewhat withdrawn professor.
Despite the dark vibe of the book, their banter was entertaining and lent a lighter tone to the story. They each have a soft side reserved only for her.

Romance
I couldn't call this book slowburn, as their relationship is not developing quite that slowly, and so I settled on medium burn. Might not be strong feelings involved quite yet, but we will get there, and I can't wait.
P.s. We have some kinky scenes in this first book that were hot, my friends.

Conclusion
A why choose romance with a hint of mystery and intrigue, this book managed to captivate me and left me wanting more. I picked it up after the book hangover Her Rabid Beasts left me in and it was the perfect choice. My only regret is that the sequel is not yet published...

Morgan B. Lee is a new to me author, but she has my full attention now! My friend found this book, and we decided to read it on a whim. Best decision ever! Maven, the FMC, gives major Wednesday vibes, so I would have read it based on that alone, but I honestly love everything about this story. The writing is phenomenal. The plot, pacing, humor, romance, and spice are perfection. All of Maven's love interests are hot and swoonworthy af. They may be some of my all-time favorite MMCs, which is not said lightly. I can't wait to see what the author has in store for these characters in the coming installments!

I think the potential of what this could be is better than what we got in this book. I had a hard time connecting and relating to the h because the author gives us nothing of who she is or what she has been through. It’s hard to understand why she is making the choices she’s making. The world and magic and the academy are interesting. I’m excited to see them work together to defeat these monsters that were talked about but I don’t even know if that is ever going to happen. Idk, there was just so much going on I have no clue what direction the author is going to take this.

pardon me?! how is this book so fun & no one is talking about it?!?!

for the girlies that loved the bonds that tie series - this one is for you.

A dark, paranormal university setting. Fated mates. Reverse harem. FMC with secrets. Obsessed MMCs.

An absolute blast.

Go read this book!

Obsessed is a mild word for how I’m feeling about this book. Dear god, this book is 🔥!
If you’re a RH fan, you need this book in your life.

I was searching for another book with same name when I came across on this book and downloaded it on a whim. Thank you god!

I don’t want to give away anything and spoil but you have a mysterious but badass heroine (with Wednesday Adams vibe), a gothic finishing school, danger lurking at every dark corner, unique world and powers and solid plot.
Along with 4 heroes;
- a charming and arrogant Dragon ( he cracked me up).
-An uptight frosty professor.
-A psychotic prince who is completely nuts.
-A blood mage with questionable characters and ruthless to the core.

Adding to it, all these heroes are powerful, smitten and obsessed with the heroine and don’t give up on her - you have my kryptonite. It’s also hilarious that apart from her they don’t agree on nothing. Though the boys knew each other from childhood they are also kinda enemies. This makes their dynamic hilarious and unique.

Unfortunately this book isn’t standalone but first in the series and fortunately the next book will be out in June.

Absolutely recommend.

P.s thinking about rereading this soon.

I’m 56% in and tempted to DNF. I never write reviews, but this book is driving me absolutely insane. It uses a whole lot of words to say...absolutely nothing 😪. It's like a word salad, but without the dressing of substance.

The plot? It's on an endless loop: reject, rinse, and repeat. And don’t get me started on the world-building—it’s practically non-existent. She’s a caster, but there’s barely any insight into how their magic works. Instead, we’re subjected to her faux tough personality. Seriously, I’ve met cats with more depth. 🐱

If only we could get some background nuggets of her past—anything to make us understand her a little better. She has every right to be the way she is, but as the reader, I have no context as to why. As it stands, she just comes off as mean. Like, did someone steal her lunch money in third grade? Give me something, Morgan!

All I’m expected to do is trust the process and hope the payoff at the end justifies her actions. Dammit, I love a good RH book, and good ones are so few and far between. With such a high rating, I was hoping this one could get me out of my reading slump. Instead, I’m just slumping further. Urrghhh, I’m mad 😡!

3.5 rounded up. I was torn between frustrated and thrilled. Too less information and too less character depth and development. All the "I can't have them but I want them" was dragged too much. Nonetheless the story was straight forward what kept me going.

She was a slow burn but the way her men were obsessed with her? Chefs kiss. They just would not give up and I’m so happy they didn’t. A golden retriever dragon shifter, an obsessive blood fae, an absolute psychopath incubus and a frosty professor… sign me up. I can’t wait to see what secrets are unveiled in the next book!

Hated the personality of the heroine. The tough persona got old fast and became cringe. Her little secret after all the push and pull was not enough. And the fact that as readers we didn’t know her big secrets (still don’t) so we don’t understand the constant push from the fmc so it was irritating.

this was just what I needed! a fast-paced, fun to read fantasy 👏🏼 after reading the 'the bonds that tie' series I have been looking for more reverse harems books and this is the only one so far I have come across, I actually liked👏🏼 not that the books are similar, but this book met my subconscious RH check-list 🤭

I love the academia elements, the different magical beings and types of magic ✨ the book was super easy to read and the world building was really good. even though we sometimes got small info dumps it was incorporated in a way that made totally sense; like the professor teaching in their classes and etc.

there are a lot of secrets and stuff we don't know yet and I can wait to figure out everything in the next book 👏🏼😍 love the banter, the guys, the baddie fmc and the 'i want you but i can't have you and i can't tell you why' hehehe 🤭

This was just a fanfic for the Wednesday TV show on Netflix. 100% Wednesday Addams and her roommate. The mannerism, clothes, bland sense of humor, unable to process emotions, intelligent, literally everything Wednesday Addams is. Her roommate was 100% the bubbly blond who couldn't shift but in this one she can't shift into a lion. One of her men even call her his 'little raincloud'. Mave pushes away her men and rejects the bonds because of some unknown reason we did not learn in the book. I was very interested in the beginning until I started to realize this. Then I got kinda border.

THE DNF QUEEN HAS RETURNED 👸🏻✌️

Ughhh okay, I had really high hopes going in to this. I love RH, I love some paranormal spiciness but all I got was a heaping pile of disappointment.
This wasn’t great; from the writing style to the characters - I just didn’t enjoy it.

Now, that’s not to say you won’t enjoy it because you very well might! It just wasn’t for me.

I thought the dialogue was cringey, the characters were unlikable and I just had no interest in turning the page and reading more.

So… DNF

I had higher expectations for this book… the plot isn’t bad, i just wish it was written better. As for smut, this book has like two big smut scenes. The other parts are more of one person wanting another that wants nothing to do with them. I just wish the plot was as detailed as the smut scenes

I decided halfway through I wasn’t going to read this series, I was just going to read this as a standalone. However, there’s a huge cliff hanger at the end so I guess i’ll read the next book.

I didn’t like the FMC until the very end, when more of the truth about her comes out and i start to realize she’s a little bit of a badass.

We’ll see how the other books go. This wasn’t bad, I just expected more

Just no

This could have been great but between the “rizz master” comment, the not like other girl fmc and the over the top boundary pushing that made me want to jumped into the book and yell at her men, it just wasn’t.

I love why choose, I love rejected mates, I love her hiding things and rejecting them because it’s not safe. But this sucked. The Bonds that Tie has all those things but is one of my favourite series, this was just not it.

I was either physically cringing or grinding my teeth for most of the book. There were a couple cute moments but overall I just can’t recommend it at all.

4.5✨

I rounded up bc this was the best supernatural academy book I’ve read in atleast a year.

It’s not a 5 bc I hate when you read POVS but secrets are kept from you. We should know the female mcs backstory from the start. It’s hard to be on her side when we don’t know what that side actually is.
