Once Upon a Christmas Storm

A Snowbound Courtship

Rate this book
One night trapped in a hut will transform their lives forever.

Headstrong and practical, Josephine Pearce lives a life devoted to her family. With her father's passing, it is her responsibility to secure a future for her sisters. Even if that means marrying a man she does not love. But when a winter storm traps her with a spoiled heir, instead of the man she intended, her reputation, future, and heart are all at risk.

Carefree and mischievous, Nicholas Fitzroy leads a life devoid of responsibility. Heir to a title, he spends his time socializing and avoiding marriage schemes. He has remained single by cultivating a dissolute reputation but an accident, a storm, and a beautiful childhood acquaintance threaten to bring him to the altar.

Now Josephine and Nicholas must face inclement weather, meddling sisters, gossip, and Christmas traditions all while trying to understand their hearts.

Can love spark from such a cold beginning?

This is a delightful little book, only novella length, but still packing in quite a lot of story, for all that. I’ve never read this author before, but I’ll be looking out for other books by her from now on.

Here’s the premise: And it’s one of the most original ones I’ve come across. Josephine Pearce had a happy and fulfilled life with her widowed father and her three younger sisters. She’s still single at twenty-seven, but that’s never bothered her. But now her father has died, there’s no brother to inherit, so the estate has passed to a cousin and his unpleasant wife. Life has become pretty miserable, and there’s no prospect of a season in London for one of the sisters to find a husband. So Jo is going to do what responsible older sisters must do - she’s going to get a husband for herself, and a home for all the sisters. And she knows just who and how. Her object is Mr Wallace, the steward on the neighbouring estate of Oakstone Hall, and if she times one of her charitable visits just right, she’ll get caught in a storm and have to take shelter in Oakstone Hall and stay overnight, she’ll be compromised and the honourable Mr Wallace will be forced to offer for her. This sounds like a pretty ruthless plan, but she’s fairly certain that Mr Wallace would not be averse to the idea.

Which is a fascinating concept. I’ve read innumerable books where the heroine is accidentally compromised, and quite a few where an unscrupulous female, not the heroine, tries to get herself compromised by the hero, but this is the first time the heroine has set out quite calmly and rationally to get herself compromised by a man, and not even a handsome, titled man, just someone situated to take care of her and her sisters.

Needless to say, her careful plans go badly awry. The storm is worse than she’d expected, she’s almost run down by a stranger on horseback, whose horse then bolts, and they’re both forced to take shelter in a hermit’s hut on the Oakstone estate. Since they’re soaking wet, this involves undressing down to their underwear to dry out their clothes. Of course it does. Fortunately, it turns out that he’s not a stranger at all, but a neighbour she was friendly with as a child. And wouldn’t you just know it, he grew up to be pretty hot stuff, handsome, charming and the heir to a title. What are the odds, eh? And wouldn’t you just know it even more, they get discovered by the very Mr Wallace that Josie had been planning to entrap.

From here on, the plot’s one that any experienced reader of the genre would expect, but it’s none the worse for that. There’s a lot of agonising on both sides over whether they’re doing the right thing, and since Mr Wallace insists on thrusting himself into the middle of the situation, it all gets a bit complicated. I rather liked the effort that went in to trying to hide the truth of the situation from the world at large in order to protect Josie’s reputation. So many Regencies skate over that aspect, but it felt very authentic to me.

Of course everything comes to a very satisfactory conclusion. There were one or two oddities of language (a transactional relationship? In a Regency novel?) but otherwise this was beautifully written. As a novella, it naturally lacks the subplots that a full length novel would feature, but that just means that all the focus is on the central romance. A highly enjoyable read. Five stars.

Josephine Pearce is out to ensnare a husband, specifically Mr. Wallace. Unfortunately, she gets trapped in a snowstorm with the wrong man. Nicholas Fitzroy's reputation with the ladies is well known, what isn't well known is that he is just trying to avoid being trapped into marriage by ladies and the ladies' mothers. When a snowstorm, reunites him with a childhood acquaintance out on the road, they escape the storm to a hut. They stay the night there together and now with the threat to their reputations they become engaged. They have to keep the secret of their night in the hut, and pretend it is a love match. But how much is pretend?

Oh my! Let me just say, the romance part of this story is so swoony. Loved it! Okay so I loved the whole story. I loved the moments in the hut, nothing untoward happens and they are very respectful of one another. There are some good humor moments in the story as well. I just loved their relationship in every way. Snowball fights, kissing boughs and more are in this delightful novella. Clean read and I definitely recommend.

Fine idea, but in my opinion, poor execution.

- lacked any chemistry whatsoever

- insta-love on the part of the MMC

- FMC was a shrew! I kept thinking, “C’mon, throw the poor man a bone.” His insta-love toward her was inexplicable, esp when she wasn’t even nice to him (until the end of the book). His affection and loyalty toward her, a complete stranger who gave him no encouragement, was entirely baffling!!!!

- FMC’s intentions vacillated between wanting to be married to anyone and being picky about who she married. If she was really that desperate to marry, which was spelled out clearly at the beginning of the book, then she wouldn’t have… well, acted the way she acted throughout the rest of the book!

- Dual perspective (not my fave)

- but it has good historical details! The author clearly did good research for this novella, which I appreciated.

I really enjoyed this sweet Christmas romance. Although Josephine and Nicholas started out in a difficult situation, it was clear from the beginning that they were a perfect match. I loved seeing their relationship develop as they both learned to trust each other. I also appreciated the historical detail included.

I love everything Holli Jo Monroe writes. Even her Instagram content is great!
.
This sweet novella was the perfect lead-in to winter reading. Even at novella length, the characters felt completely developed and the plot was solid.
.
The story events are well-researched, something else I appreciate about HJM's writing.
.
Nicholas and Josephine were a delight to get to know. I hope each of the sisters gets her own story!

Past times are so interesting. If a man and a woman were “caught” together, even just seeking shelter in a snowstorm, they had to marry to protect their reputations–especially hers. Josephine knew this and deliberately made a plan to do just that. Only she got caught with a man she wasn’t expecting. How fun is that?

Nicholas and Josephine were childhood friends and I thought it was hilarious that he got trapped when he was trying so hard to avoid just that. The things that happened in that hut were heart-warming and awakened sparks suppressed deep inside.

I love the way Monroe writes this sweet and swoony romance and fills these pages with kissing boughs, sheep, snowball fights, love and respect, along with familiar and comforting holiday traditions.

This sweet romantic novella is sure to hit the sweet spot for holiday reading.

Content: mild romance; mild moment of peril

“You are…”
“Handsome? Charming? Clever?” “Incorrigible,” she said but didn’t hide her smile.

I really enjoyed this novella. This is such a sweet childhood friends to more story with other excellent tropes that you will love discovering along the way!!! This story was delightful and I fell in love with the characters!

I love Josephine and Nicholas. Nicholas had me laughing! He’s an excellent, charming flirty, tease. These two are so good for each other and their story is such a sweet and gentle romance.

There are also laugh out loud scenes, wonderful Regency Christmas traditions, fun twists and turns, and the sweetest kisses and moments. I also loved the sisters and the fun dynamic between them all.

If you haven't read a book by Holli Jo Monroe, do yourself a favor and grab one now. This would be a nice addition to your TBR. Holli Jo does so much research for her books. I always learn something when I read one she's written. And she incorporates the history so smoothly that I never feel like I'm being taught a history lesson.

Josie and Col's story is unique and I really enjoyed the premise of this book. The romance is all you could ask for. And there are sheep! I can't imagine the sorry without the sheep, but I know they were a later addition. I'm so glad they were there!

This book is the first in a multi-author series of completely standalone books set in snowstorm.

I did receive an advanced digital copy of this book and am happily leaving an honest review.

Okay, this book is absolutely adorable and delightfully delicious. The chemistry between Josephine and Nicholas was so good. (And also, isn’t it the cutest thing to have a Christmas story with a MMC named Nicholas? The similarities between St. Nick and the MMC end there, but it’s fun thing I couldn’t resist mentioning.)

Do I love imperfect characters who have to occasionally learn things the hard way, and work on their communication skills, but are still mature enough to recognize that such is needed? Absolutely I do. And this book contains such characters.
The meet-cute in this story is so much fun, and I loved that it was referenced a couple times later on.
The hermit hut sounds enchanting, and I kind of want to see one now. Or build one on my own property. Is this still the done thing? Because it seems positively charming.

I loved the growth both Jo and Col go through in this story, and that throughout it, they help one another change and become better people. And the romance is seriously top notch. Charlotte is sweet, and Georgiana seems a force to be reckoned with. I dearly hope we get more stories from this family in the future.

This is a wonderful, quick read, perfect for the Christmas season. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys historical romance or Christmas books.

Josephine Pearce is a spinster, the eldest of her three sisters, who for years was in charge of her father's estate until his death 18 months before. She is used to seeing to everyone's needs, but now lives under the disapproving eyes of her cousin's wife, the new mistress of the house. Her cousin was the heir, but he doesn't enjoy country life and has no idea how to manage the estate properly. Jo often escapes the situation by fleeing to a hermit hut on an adjacent property. Hermit huts were a type of folly often seen on country estates in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The hut becomes a refuge when Jo and Nicholas Fitzroy, a viscount's heir, end up trapped there. The consequences of this situation result in the two of them being forced into an engagement. Jo must overcome her very real concerns about her future with a man who is said to be a notorious rake, while Nicholas must try to convince her of his sincerity. All of this must be done with very little opportunity for time alone.

Well-written, realistic scenarios, appealing characters, and engaging dialogue. I really enjoyed this one.

Oh, my Christmas biscuits!! This book by Holli was just what I needed to get in the Christmas spirit.

Josi and Col's relationship was so sweet and festive. The way Josephine just wants to take care of her sisters and have her own place. Nicholas is tired of the city and wants to settle down in the country.

A snowstorm and near crash on the road leads them to be stuck in a shack together. After a misunderstanding, they begin a Christmas courtship of growing feelings and uncertainty.

I loved ALL of the traditions in this book, and they made me want to make more of my own! What Nicholas does for Josi is what dreams are made of, and creating a team is what makes them a perfect couple!!

I don't know how Holli does it, but she did it again!! The way she weaves a world where you can't help but be completely immersed. From the culture to the emotions and world building, it is a work of art. Holli did an amazing job of creating a story that I couldn't help but live in, and now it's Christmas at my house early!

This a delightful Christmas story! At only 125 days from Christmas, and with the season about to change I really enjoyed this story. A light and easy read. I always love a childhood friends to lovers trope and this was a fantastic one. And adding some LW vibes, what’s more to ask in a story to make it truly enjoyable?

Josie 💖 Col

I loved Josie for how determined and responsible she is and feels about her sisters being the eldest of the bunch. With determination she goes out to catch a husband and instead her plan backfires on her. But believe me the entire story is a pleasure to read with plenty of humor to enjoy.
And who’s not going to love Col? With his easy and teasing manner he’s bound to win your heart.

Some of my favorite things 😊
❄️ Christmas traditions
❄️ Hermit hut 🛖
❄️ Sheep
❄️ Parlour games
❄️ Snowball fights
❄️ JA references
❄️ Childhood friends
❄️ LW vibes
And so much more 😉

If you like clean Regency romance with some humor, this is the book for you.

This was such a wonderful winter regency romance!
I was about 5 pages in when I realized I was already smiling and enjoying this story! Josephine and Nicholas are a wonderful pair, childhood friends who years later are fortunes apart. But, when sheep and a winter storm intervene, they find themselves with an opportunity to get to know each other as friends and then forced fiancées. Could this mistake end up making them happier than they ever expected?
❄️
I loved Josephine and how deeply she cared for her family. Watching her and Nicholas navigate their situation, and learning how to lean on each other was so wonderful! I couldn’t have loved it more and would highly recommend adding it to your winter TBR!

I really enjoyed this book. I'm trying to put my finger on why I liked it so much. Maybe it's because everything is really plausible. The problems that arise and how they are dealt with leave no strain on credulity. It's all true to the characters, how they would react, and fitting to the period. Speaking of characters, they are all very real, yet uniquely their own. Each is layered with aspects that invite you to know or understand them better.
One test of how well a book is done is that when it concludes you find you want to carry on with the characters. Your visit with them has been enriching and you want to continue with their lives and see how it all goes. I wish each of Josie's sisters had their own book. I'd like to know their stories. (That's a hint to the author if she happens to read this review. ; )
I'll be looking for more books by this author.

Oh my cuteness! I loved this story! Nicholas and Josephine find themselves alone together in a cabin overnight to escape a storm and of course things spiral after that! I really enjoyed the whole plot and their unconventional courtship. They were such a cute couple and I loved the fact that they knew each other as children and had that previous connection. Nicholas and Josephine really worked well together as partners!

If you’re looking for a super sweet and satisfying quick read, I highly recommend A Snowbound Courtship! Just in time for the cold weather ❄️.

I absolutely love Holli Jo Monroe's books!

When I pick one up I know two things for certain:

1. I will be immersed in a well written beautiful historical romance. I adored Josephine and Nicholas. I loved the sweetness of two lost souls finding themselves in a forgotten friendship from the past.

2. I will learn something new about the time period in which the story takes place. I had never heard of Hermit Huts before reading this book, but what a fun historical fact to include. Imagine a society where constructing a hermit hut on your vast grounds (as well as hiring an ornamental hermit to live there) would be considered as adding to the aesthetic of your property.

I can't wait to see what I learn from her next book!

This was an interesting plot. The characters were very likeable and made me want to know what happens with Josephine's sisters.
I found the length of the book was about perfect. Long enough that it wasn't over in an hour but it also didn't drag on.
It was a clean, nice Regency read. There are so many Regency Era books but the author of this book managed to come up with a fresh idea.
Looking forward to trying the other books in this series as well as seeing what else this author has written.

“And furthermore, as soon as an opportunity presents itself, I will show you the value of a proper kiss.”

Oh my swoon, these two are absolutely adorable and definitely belong together. Nicholas and Josephine have such a beautiful, Christmas and snow filled romance that captures my heart from the start. I loved the plot with these once childhood friends found together in a snowstorm and decisions must be made, dignity saved and falling hearts discovered.

Monroe does a splendid job with this regency Christmas romance that is full of hope, holiday spirit, heartfelt moments, entertaining encounters and more. And the swoon level. Nicholas is down right charming and just who Josephine needs in her life. And vice versa. Like I said, I love this story, adore this book couple and find Monroe’s addition to the multi-author Once Upon a Christmas Storm series one hundred percent delightful.

A sweet Regency Christmas story.

What an enjoyable story! I appreciated the change of venue from what most Regency era stories have. I also felt that the the way the characters came to know and care for each other was more realistic and not over the top. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy characters with depth and honor.

Holli Jo Monroe does it again! She has a talent for making her characters so real and personable from the first page. This book was no different. In A Snowbound Courtship, you will find lovable characters and plenty of swoon worthy moments. It’s the perfect clean romance to curl up with in front of the fire this winter.

New to me author!

I’ve had this book in my library for a couple weeks now. I just read it today, and wow! What a great story! Josie and Col were so perfect together, although it took a few road bumps until she felt confident enough to see Col for what he truly was.

Very sweet epilogue. I didn’t want this to end 💞

Clean and sweet and hea

I enjoyed the romance and that the author kept it fairly low angst. I also enjoyed that the Hero was not cade but a kind man who had been a flirt. Both characters mature but not through painful methods. This is a real sweet read and I recommend it to any regency reader who enjoys clean and wholesome stories.

I liked the historical details in this book, some of which I had never known about before. I also liked the relationship between the sisters, and the care that Josie took of them. This was a "forced marriage" trope, which I typically enjoy. Only because in these Regency books, the ending is always happy. :)

No book is perfect, buuuut...

HolI Jo you are a true author! This story had me smiling the whole way through. Wonderful, not smutty, but a smidgen of warm romance. No cataclysmic, gut twisting plot lines, but rather just enough trip ups. Read it in two sittings, only because I had to sleep. 😁

This was very sweet. I liked that it just got straight to the relationship and “getting to know you” part, but there were also some parts that felt a bit rushed. Some more time may have helped with the character and relationship development.

Sweet low angst story

The central characters, Josie and Nicholas, make this book a success. Their lively dialogue and an excellent sense of place also contribute. It’s very low angst.
