I Could Never

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new forbidden, enemies-to-lovers story…
It all started with an unexpected phone call.
Two years after my fiancé passed away in an accident, his father died suddenly, leaving Brad’s adult, special-needs brother with no one to care for him.
The next thing I knew, I was on a cross-country drive to New Hampshire where I’d be moving in to look after Scottie until I could get him into a group home.
The last thing I ever expected?
I wouldn’t be taking care of him alone.
Josh Mathers, my fiancé’s best friend—who also happened to be my sworn enemy—insisted he was the better person for the job. He told me to go back to California, and I told him where he could stick that demand.
Our disdain for each other wasn’t anything new. It dated back to a text I’d accidentally read years ago.
We hated each other. But we both loved Scottie, so neither of us budged.
Now we were living together in a tiny house—with one available bedroom. Thank goodness it was only temporary.
Over time, I realized the broody jerk I thought I knew was different than I’d imagined.
I found myself slowly growing attached to someone I once considered the enemy…and growing attracted to him.
Sure, both of us were guilt-ridden over Brad. We were also two grown people with pent-up frustration toward one another—stuck in a cabin in the woods.
But this was Josh.
I could never.

╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

ღ 𝐈 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 ღ Is a full length contemporary romance novel by author Penelope Ward. Spoken in 'dual perspectives.' Josh & Carly

Once I saw the cover, read the blurb I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, once it arrived on my kindle. Game over!! This was inhaled like my next breath depended on it I didn't want to put it down!!

Two years later Carly is still in the throes of despair after losing her fiance in a tragic accident, so the last thing she ever expected was a phone call asking her to help with Scottie's care, he's her deceased fiancé’s autistic brother after his father passed away recently. Uprooting herself and moving to New Hampshire she's hoping she can place him in a group home as soon as possible.

Then out of the blue another curve ball is thrown her way, because the very day she arives she opens up the door to Josh, he's her deceased fiance's best friend.

Bring on all the feels as they struggle to coexist whilst taking care of a nonverbal autistic adult and his many ipads which keep him occupied and settled.

This had all the moments, those up in the feels moments, emotional moments, manic giggling moments, hot moments and all the moments where I rooted for these two. Without even knowing it themselves they were perfect for each other.

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: The premise. Scottie. The notes/inside jokes.

The Not-So-Good: The ending could've been better. The first sexy scene felt odd and kind of disconnected.

The Bad: The lack of angst.

Overall: This was an enjoyable read. I'm kind of disappointed that it wasn't as angsty as I'd hoped. I wouldn't say they "hated" each other or that the tension was what I had expected with those feelings. I thought they disliked each other for silly miscommunication reasons. I think it would've been better if there was more tension in that respect and more angst. I know this is an unpopular opinion -- but maybe some flashbacks to when they had encounters in the past? Other than that, Scottie and their interactions with him stole the show for me! I have a son on the spectrum, but he is high functioning so it's not the same (not that anyone on the spectrum is the same), but it was heartwarming to see him connect to these two in his own way.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Carly and Josh's story. They both jump in to help when they find out that the adult brother with autism, Scottie, of their deceased fiancé and best-friend is needing care after his dad died. Only they weren't expecting each other to be there. They had not necessarily liked each other in the past when the fiancé and best-friend was alive 2 years prior, so there is a lot of miscommunication that needs to be sorted out. There is some Scottie drama, some sexy times, and some baggage they have to work through...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Carly (mostly) and Josh's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, more like (not hate but) dislike-to-more

H (Hero) rating: 4 stars. Josh. I really loved his relationship and ease with Scottie. I just got tired of the hot and cold.

h (heroine) rating: 3.5 stars. Carly. I liked her. I appreciated how she stepped up with Scottie and how she was caring, but I don't feel like we got very deep into her character.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I shed a few tears but nothing that needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story. If I'm completely honest, the first scene with them doing anything I was convinced was going to be a vivid dream because it felt out of nowhere! Kind of odd actually.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends in an a cute place and while I'm sure others might call this a HEA, I'm calling it a HFN ending

Safety: This one should be either Safe or Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences

I just don’t think Penelope Ward is the author for me. I say this because this is now the fifth novel I've read by her, three were in partnership with Vi Keeland and I only mildly liked those better, and I'm still finding myself yearning for more.

After putting this book down, I felt the exact same way I'd felt during the previous novels, like I'd almost reached a level of attachment to the characters but never quite got there. As I read this book, I tried to pay attention to each element, along with the dialogue, so I could figure out where the disconnect stemmed from and I think I found it. There's a lot of explaining of feelings and not a lot of experiencing of them. Thinking back, I found this true of the other novels. Like I wasn't being led down the path, but shoved down it.

While I enjoyed elements of this, experiencing the sparring between Carly and Josh, seeing them care for Scottie, learning about their individual relationships with Brad and how his death impacted them, I wasn't drawn into the storytelling. I always felt like I was watching a performance from the nose bleeds. So far away that I couldn't really enjoy the performance. I think a lot of that has to do with how the author crafts her prose and the arcs and character building she employs to suck you in. It was all very lackluster despite the engaging nature of the story itself. A disparity I can't quite forgive.

Was this a bad book? No, it wasn't. It was decent enough. But I'm looking for more than decent enough. I'm looking for a solid good at the very least and this just wasn't. Which is sad to me because all the elements were there for a really good novel. It just never came together. Toward the end I was just powering through to get it over with. It didn't help that the ending was disjointed and it felt like the author struggled with a way to create drama from which to create a HEA. It wound up feeling very forced and contrived.

Did I care about Carly, Josh and Scottie? I guess, to an extent, but I never truly became invested so what happened to them never truly mattered. I may try another novel by this author, maybe with the assist from Vi Keeland as I think she writes better in a team, but I don't have high hopes.

Honestly, the best part of this novel is the sexy ass man on the cover.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Carly Garber left her big city life to a small town to care for the autistic brother of her deceased fiancé. Unknown to her, her fiancé’s best friend Josh Mathers had the same idea. They never liked each other, but facing adversity together could bring them to a place neither was ready to go.

I liked both Josh and Carly. They sacrificed a lot for someone they both loved. And of course, Scottie stood out in his own way. I loved their manshowers lol!

I was starting to want everything with Josh—things he likely wasn’t willing to give me.

I enjoyed the overall story, though personally, I’d prefer to get a glimpse of the past to strengthen the decisions made by the main characters in the present. The sexy scenes scarce quantity was made up by the quality.

I Could Never is a story of absolution and moving on. It would appeal to readers who enjoy slow-burn, heartwarming romance.

Carly Garber is a freelance makeup artist in L.A. who often works on television and movie sets. She uproots her entire life and drives across the country to Woodsboro, New Hampshire when she feels she's needed. Two years ago her fiance passed away in an accident, then his father suddenly died leaving Brad's special needs brother alone. She's barely arrived in the small town when an unexpected guest shows up. Josh Mathers was her fiance's best friend. They'd been like brother's growing up, and apparentlyhe'd had the same idea to drop everything to temporarily take care of Scottie. He thinks he can do things better and came to relieve her, but she's not going anywhere. She has no plans to return to California until they find Scottie a good group home. Now she's stuck in a tiny cabin in the woods with an unwanted roommate. Carly and Josh clash at every turn. The only thing they seem to have in common is their love of Scottie. As she spends time with Josh she realizes she didn't know him as well as she thought. As a strong bond forms lines get blurred, and feelings turn complicated. Will they try to ignore their attraction, or is getting attached inevitable?

I Could Never by Penelope Ward is a heartwarming, standalone, slow burn, forbidden, small town, close proximity, enemies to lovers romance full of emotion, sizzling chemistry, hilarious banter, delicious tension and beautiful connections. I really loved this book and these characters! This story is full of heart and will hit you in all the feels! <333

Carly drives across the country to take care of Brad’s adult special needs brother. It’s been 2 years since Brad passed, but Carly wants to step up and help find a group home for Scottie. What she doesn’t expect is Brad’s best friend showing up to help. Carly is definitely not a fan of Josh, to say the least.

This story is more than just enemies to lovers. It’s about learning to forgive and move on. Trying to deal with guilt with the growing feelings they have for each other. Yet, there are a lot of sweet moments, not only between Carly and Josh, but Scottie too.

This book was more than I expected with a twist that I did not see coming.

I highly recommend the audiobook with Sebastian York and Andi Arndt as narrators.

My first solo Penelope Ward book and it wasn't what I expected.
First of all I felt that the story wasn't a light, sexy read, or enemies-to-lovers. It tried to deal with some heavy stuff but it did so superficially. So, I would say that it is somewhere between a romance and a chick-lit contemporary story.
Carly and Josh, bad opinions for each other aside, stepped up to provide assistance in a difficult situation and I can't help but admire them both for that. Not everyone would put their perosonal life on hold and be there for someone for whom they had no legal or familial obligation to. What I appreciated the most in their relationship was the honesty in their transactions and the mature way they delt with their cohabitation.
It became clear, almost from the start, that the "bad blood" between them was just a misunderstanding and from then on they formed a united front to deal with Scottie and his needs.
Though there are plenty of lol moments, I missed the angst and the bander that I was expecting to get from these two. Also, I felt that their attraction and chemistry was forced and came out of the blue.
Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read and I knew from previous books both the narrators and I like how they perform in this kind of stories, and I believe that if I had no expectations I might have rated the book higher.

Oh My Heart! Carly Garber never thought life would throw so many curveballs her way, so when she is the only one left to take care of her deceased fiancé’s autistic brother Scottie until he can get into a special needs home she goes to New Hampshire. Carly also didn’t expect her former fiancé’s best friend, Josh Mathers, to also be there helping out. These two could not be more opposite and do not get along but can they work together for the sake of Scottie? Will they find a way to move on with life and just maybe find a new happiness…together? What a beautiful enemies to lovers, touching, slow burn romance that tugs at your heartstrings between moments of pure laughter. A top read of 2023!

Honestly the cover was the one that drew me into wanting to read this book without reading the synopsis. (Doesn't he give you a Henry Cavil vibe?) Anywho, I've had my share of hit or misses with Penelope Ward but I will say that this was an enjoyable read. At the beginning it did take me a bit to get into it but as I kept reading that story got more interesting.

DNF @ 60% NOTHING. Is. Happening. Zero chemistry. The back and forth internal monologues these two have about “should they or shouldn’t they” is exhausting and irritating. The only moment that evoked some human emotion is when Scottie presses his cheek to the TV screen when he hears his dead father’s voice on the home movie playing (😭) That isn’t enough for me to see it through until the end. 1.5* beyond boring*stars!!!!

⭐️ DNF @ 16% When I read “I hadn’t been good at relationships and had cheated on my fair share of girlfriends back in high school. Might have even stolen a girl from a friend or two back in the day.” (MMC), I had no further interest in finishing this book. No thank you.

I’m trying to get better at writing reviews… I’m the worst at it but it is what it is.
This book just got me. I’m usually all about the drama and angst. The ow and the cheating. This wasn’t that. This was sweet and heartfelt. There was the dead ex heartbreak, but it was done differently. Or better maybe? Idk. I just know that I felt the emotions. The fact that 2 people dropped their whole lives and went to care for an autistic man that wasn’t blood related showed character and heart. This was just a great book. I also laughed at the shower scenes.

I love Penelope and she is my favorite Romance author. Her style is unique and she knows how to blend her personal experience with fiction so that a little piece of her remains in the story all the time. I read about her kids and personal life, so I think this book goes home more than it should.

But, for me the story was a little static, it didn't have the dynamic that I craved and seen in her old books, back when I fell in love with her. This Penelope that we are seeing right now is not very much concentrated on developing a complex plot, but more focused on the feeling and on the message. I am not saying that this is not a fair approach, but it's not something suitable for me, because I want action and more things to happen when I am reading.

Carly and Josh were a nice couple, who had to face a very delicate situation - taking care of an adult with special needs, Scottie. Scottie is Brad's brother, Carly's fiancee who passed away in a car accident. Josh was his best friend. They both had the idea of coming to New Hampshire and staying with Scottie until they could find a group home for him.

Carly and Josh didn't have a good relationship when Brad was alive and that banter kept on going until they both discovered their real personalities. Not to mention the physical attraction that was blooming. They had to face a huge amount of guilt, because of their connection to Brad and because in their eyes and of their families, a possible love is impossible.

The message was interesting and the way it described the needs and behavior of a special needs adult with autism. It was very sad to read, but also very eye-opening, because there are so many cases like this in the world and you even didn't know about it. Seeing 2 adults join forces to help and cope was very heartwarming for me.

But that was just about it, the social message... Besides that, Josh and Carly had a very slow burn, which I think was overshadowed by Scottie's condition and problems. They were not in the spotlight and I think a lot of questions about them remain unanswered. This is how I see the story... I wanted more from it more plot development and more dynamic.

This follows Carly who lost her fiancé in a car accident a few years ago. Then after Brad died his father has now passed and Brad's brother has special needs. So Carly decides she will move in to help out because that’s what Brad would have done. But my worst nightmare and enemy has just rocked up to the house and he thinks I can’t handle it.

This was such a beautiful story of two people both dealing with grief in their own way and pulling heartstrings. The way these two cared for Scottie who has special needs was beautiful. I feel this was more character development with some plot but I still really enjoyed it. The left notes between each other were special. They respected Brad even though he was no longer around. Was a great audiobook and the narrators played these characters well. So glad I picked this up!

The story had a unique premise it was just heartwarming. But it’s also got antagonism, sexual tension, and an underlying emotional component due to the shared trauma and misconceptions. These two thought they hated each other but when they’re in a new situation in forced proximity and having to work as a team, the dynamics start to change.

Scottie is a young adult autistic man who has recently lost his father and previously lost his brother. He needs someone to care for him and find him a permanent living situation. And the two people who show up to help are not happy to see each other. Carly was Scottie's late brother's fiancee' and Josh is his late brother's long-time best friend. And they did not get along in the past. And they both think they can handle it alone, until they realize how challenging the situation is.

Carly is sassy, kind, and has spent two years grieving. She has always seen Josh as the wild one and a bad influence. But they did not really know each other and were colored by misperceptions.

They are dealing with shared loss, guilt, loneliness, and grief. But as they work together to help this young man, the forced proximity, new understanding, communication, and teamwork begin to build a connection and unwanted attraction.

Carly is just starting to think she can begin to move on and is willing to try putting herself out there but is also afraid of her burgeoning feelings for him and fear of rejection. It's a slow burn with some jealousy issues and fear of admitting what is really going on. Josh is struggling with issues from his past and feelings of unworthiness and guilt. He tends to run hot and cold, avoids, resists, and is afraid of what he wants. And the want is the problem for both of them.

This is a story of unexpected life changes, found family, and home. It's complicated, messy, sometimes funny and sometimes emotional. I honestly loved them together. From their initial antagonism to friends to lovers. They challenge, support, and surprise each other. I loved seeing them with Scottie. This book touched my heart and I really enjoyed it.

God, what a fantastic book! It was the perfect combination of funny, bittersweet, emotional and sexy. I liked both the H and the h so much, neither were perfect, but they were fully developed characters with so much nuance. The writing and pacing was perfect. Maybe would have enjoyed seeing more into the future or some interactions with his family at the end, but the ending was definitely still satisfying. The chemistry between them was undeniable and the book took you on the same journey they took. You start out just feeling so sad about what happened to Brad and all that he'd missed out. Then slowly you see them forming their own unconventional but content family. The memories of Brad become more points of happiness instead of sadness as they move through their grief together. They really become best friends before finally giving in to their love and chemistry. Generally, I don't love time lapses, but this one was well done, necessary and not too long. It gave them both time to fully realize how much they missed their life together. Scottie running away to look for them and taking the photo of the 3 of them gave me all the feels. I'm not usually a cryer, but this book had me sobbing in a few places, but smiling in the end. Definitely giving this one of my rare 5 star reviews.

Oh my heart, what a beautiful read! An enemies-to-lovers, close proximity, slow-burning, forbidden romance, this book captivated me from start to finish, and I fell in love with these characters and their beautiful story.

It’s been two years since Carly’s fiancé, Brad, died in a car accident. When Brad’s father dies and his special needs brother is left without a guardian, Carly packs up her life and moves to their small home in New Hampshire to care for him. Unbeknownst to her, Brad’s best friend, Josh, has the same idea, and he turns up on the doorstep of the family’s small cabin to also look after Scottie.

Josh and Carly never got along. They don’t really know each other, but there was always animosity between them. Neither of them want to be trapped in the same house as the other, but they both love Brad’s brother and are determined to do right by him, so they agree to live together to care for him until they can find him a place in a suitable group home.

It doesn’t take long for them to overcome their past issues and fall into a fun, teasing and banter-filled friendship. They open up to each other, they laugh and joke, their text conversations are so entertaining, and together with Scottie, they create a beautiful little family.

But the whole time, they are hopelessly falling for each other. They don’t hide the fact, they are open about their attraction, but they’re both too mired in grief and guilt to actually go there. Josh, in particular, feels heart wrenching guilt for not being there when Brad died, and swears to himself never to cross the line with his best friend’s girl. So they agree to ignore their growing feelings and do their best for Scottie.

The feels are intense, and the sexual tension builds beautifully, and I loved each and every interaction between them. Their banter is so entertaining, their heartfelt conversations really bring the emotion, and the attraction that sizzles beneath every moment builds the anticipation, just waiting for them to crack.

It’s a slow burn, which is emotional and sexy, and even before anything actually happens, their love for each other just shines. There’s wonderful character growth as Josh and Carly deal with their grief and their complicated feelings for each other. I could understand and appreciate where they were at, and I loved watching their story play out.

This is such a gorgeous read. A story of healing and moving on, of strong connections and found family, and figuring out what you want and where you want to be. It’s a beautifully emotional story, and I loved it so much.

5 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Andie Arndt and Sebastian York, and they do a wonderful job as always. I absolutely recommend listening to this one.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I liked the characters, and I thought their chemistry was fine. Unfortunately there were things about the plot that I just couldn't get over.

First, Carly's fiance Brad has been dead for two years, but somehow she's still in touch with someone to know that the Brad's father passed away, leaving Brad's nonverbal autistic brother Scottie with Brad's aunt. That seems unlikely. And she decides to put her make-up job on hold to drive from California to New Hampshire to take care of the brother for months or years until he can get into a home? That's insane.

Second, the experience of taking care of Scottie seemed romanticized, and played for laughs most of the time. As a guy, I can guarantee that Scottie grabbing Josh's balls and dick would not be funny. It would be painful, and possibly damaging. Besides that, any time Scottie does something destructive, they just laugh it off, as if they're having the time of their lives. I didn't find any of it funny, and it seemed too slapstick-y for me.

Third, they both go on dates, both while they're there and when they move home, and it's talked about like it's a requirement to go on dates. They're in New Hampshire temporarily, so why would they feel the need to go on dates and get laid while they're going through this situation that should be very difficult? I understand that it's fiction, and in the world of romance novels people can't usually go a week or two without going on a date or getting laid, but it felt unrealistic and off.

Fourth, I didn't buy the excuse that they couldn't be together because of Brad. It would be fine if they were with other people, but not each other? I thought it was weak and repetitive, and I got sick of it by the end.

There is such beauty in Penelope Ward's writing. Her plots are always fresh, new, and different than anything you've read before. Always deep, heartfelt, and with that touch of angst your heart longs for.

Carly, our heroine, who lost her fiancé two years ago, braves the task of stepping in and taking care of his 23 year old autistic brother, Scottie.

Soon, she realizes she wasn't the only one with the same idea of stepping in for Scottie's well-being. Welcome, Josh Mathers, ladies and gentlemen. P.S. he's the best friend of her late fiancé :O.

Let's just say that the tension is very palpable. There were steamy and heartwarming moments. The attraction alone was its very own breathing entity that they couldn't fight at all!

I Could Never is hate turned into love with real emotions that will undoubtedly cause you to shed a tear or two.
