Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Luffy has an unusual set of things he cares about. The integrity of the pirate flag is one of them.

The fight helping the doctor reindeer man and trying to get him as a crew member.

As much as Oda is clearly at it again with his god-awful villains who provide no sense of danger to the crew whatsoever, everything outside of that is gold once again. We are 17 whole volumes in and there has yet to be a single villain of worth in this story. Even Arlong barely counts. That is really bad. I forgive it because, now that the series has gone on as long as it has, these arcs have a level of charm to them; they remind you of simpler times. But let's say One Piece only ran for 40 volumes or so. The series would be a 5/10 for how much time was spent doing nothing of consequence.

Luckily, we have decades of fantastic stuff ahead of us. But Oda takes a long time to get going. The first 17 volumes of Naruto, for example, blow the first 17 volumes of One Piece clean out of the water. Same as Hunter x Hunter, or pretty much most mangas. One Piece is a late-blooming flower.

One Piece has always been a wacky series full of crazy powers and crazier people, but I think it lost a bit of that edge as it went farther into the Grand Line, as most of those powers came from Devil Fruits, and as Haki muscled its way into the scene. Chess and Kuromarimo have none of that going on: they're just two morons that dress weird and throw sticky slimeballs. Memorable little bit parts that do the whole thing by themselves with no superpowered crutches. I appreciate them for it.

Just as Chopper's backstory is full of feels, so is him finally joining the crew. A great set of scenes that are unlikely to ever be truly beaten.

Drum island

If you have a soft spot for animals this arc will crush you. I read this arc with my cat chilling in my lap and couldn’t help but shed a tear. Choppers backstory is so heartbreaking and it perfectly captures the innocence of animals and the great relationships that can form between animals and humans.
I just want to hug chopper and he immediately became one of my favorites.
His fighting was pretty cool too and Luffy was also at his best in this arc, protecting the dreams of a reindeer he just met.
I didn’t like the villain and his fight with Luffy was pretty standard but the sendoff with the cherry blossoms was so good, bringing the backstory full circle.
It’s time to get a chopper plushie.

The one piece is real.

Chopper, Kureha, Luffy and Sanji succeeded in defeating the evil King Wapol and like that liberating the people of Drum Island. Chopper joined the crew and they are having a Sakura party on the ship.
The next stop is the desert kingdom of Alabasta. We see a glimpse of Vivi's father, Nefeltari Cobra, the king of Alabasta. The citizens of the Kingdom see Sir Crocodile, the head of Baroque Works, as their hero but little do they know that he's actually planning to take over the Kingdom.

BACK INTO ONE PIECE BABY

this is the first time i am reading manga after taking japanese classes!! i am shocked how much knowledge i know of a whole different language in under a year. i love understanding the tiny onomatopoeia and deeper meanings of character names/powers. there will come a time where i slowly forget all that i have gained: but for now i am cherishing every second of it.

i made my bf addicted to one piece this year (and his roomate), it's only fitting i finish reading so we can all catch up together. this is the first time i am surrounded by people that have consumed so much of one piece, it is so bizarre yet heartwarming? i tried making a goal to finish all volumes in 2022, but that clearly never went very far. he has been to japan recently (his parents actually lived there for some time) and is currently a double major (one of those majors being in japanese) so i love all the sentiments he shares about the culture/language/food/art with me. i am excited to (hopefully) study abroad there next summer!

rant over, point is, i love one piece. one of the greatest treasures of our world and possibly the most impactful piece of media of all time, if the live action proved anything. i love entering this world: from starting the anime back in june 2021 to procrastinate taking my ACT, to "finishing" the anime summer 2022 when i first started college, and now (hopefully) "finishing" the manga by the beginning 2024 in my sophomore year.

maybe when i catch up to all 100+ volumes out right now there will be another more fleshed out review on the perfection of storytelling in ever-changing settings, the continuous intrigue, the mind-blowing political dichotomy, the thoughtfully unique characterization, the excellent pacing of a manga/anime that has been releasing for over 26 years(!!), and the overall most beautiful art ever released. stay tuned.

One Piece, Vol. 17 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (146–155) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon concludes the Drum Island Arc. Monkey D. Luffy, Sanji and Tony Tony Chopper fight Wapol and his henchmen, Chess and Kuromārimo. Wapol uses his devil-fruit power to become a cannon-armed house and fuses his men into the two-headed, four-armed Chessmarimo. Sanji's back aches, keeping him from fighting. Chopper takes a drug he calls Rumble Ball, and defeats Chessmarimo.

Wapol sneaks into the castle and chases Nami. Luffy catches up to them as Wapol attempts to open the weapon storage. Unable to do so because Nami has taken his key, Wapol retreats to his cannon at the top of the castle, but the cannon does not work, and Luffy sends him flying off the island. Luffy tries to persuade Chopper to join the crew, and the reindeer finally agrees. With a doctor aboard, the crew continues its journey to Alabasta.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. The narrative concludes the multi-tankōbon long arc based on Drum Island. Key plot-points are that Tony Tony Chopper is introduced and joins the Straw Hat Pirates as the medic and Zoan type Devil Fruits are introduced which allows the user to transform into an animal species at will or an inter-species hybrid.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 17 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Best volume so far. Tony Tony Chopper's has the best backstory of all current Straw hat Pirates. Also I love how Oda teas major players in the near future in this arc like: Monkey D Dragon, Blackbeard, Whitebeard, Ace and even the Holy lands.

The way he conveys his story is akin to an old fable. The evil king who eats houses and whatever else he can get his hands on is like an allegory for what a despot or fascist leader does to a country. Slowly devouring everything in sight with no thought for the people themselves.(small spoilers) Also the reindeer/doctor character is amazing. Love it. I also really enjoy the Alice and wonderland type character design in One Piece. So far it’s great.

La primera vez que mencionan la voluntad de los D, a Ace, que hablan de Dragon, de los shichibukai...... este manga me emociona a niveles que ningún otro lo podrá llegar a hacer, sin duda es el mejor manga del mundo

An excellent volume showcasing the perseverance of Luffy and his crew while introducing us to their latest pirate member! We also get a sneak peek at some upcoming enemies who seem threatful just from their design alone.

Super entertaining end of an arc. Chopper's story is emotional, filled with awesome dialogue and moments. In this book, we find a bigger world building. Will of "D." is mentioned, Ace shows up, Crocodile is shown... Bye frozen drum island, onto the hot Alabasta.
