Edmond Moore Hamilton was a popular author of science fiction stories and novels throughout the mid-twentieth century. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was raised there and in nearby New Castle, Pennsylvania. Something of a child prodigy, he graduated high school and started college (Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania) at the age of 14--but washed out at 17. He was the Golden Age writer who worked on Batman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and many sci-fi books.
Morgan Chane talks Dilullo into a last big raid and a crew is assembled and they go after the greatest treasure in the Galaxy, "The Singing Suns". However it is too well guarded by crazy aliens and they barely make it out of there alive but end up captured and imprisoned. Chane escapes and decides that the only way he can rescue Dilullo and his men, and get revenge on the aliens is to go after the treasure again with the Starwolves on his side this time. That means going to his home planet where some nasty people want him dead and enlisting them to help him.
This trilogy of space adventures will not be everyone's bailiwick, but they were fun for me. I grew up with the old EC comics and 1950's space adventure movies and these novels were like candy for a certain sweet tooth. If that sounds like something you'd care to try, I recommend them. Not literature at all, just fun.
A manly space adventure with a fabulous prize, really nasty baddies, and a bit of heartache along the way. Not quite my cup of tea, but it's exciting and well written. First class old school space opera.
I read the first two books in this series several years ago and never got around to the final novel. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed Hamilton's space adventures. It was a blast!
