For Lorelei Clay, no good deed goes unpunished…

Reluctant ghost whisperer Lorelei Clay wants a working moat, which is the only reason she agrees to help with yet another supernatural situation. The simple ghostbusting job quickly escalates when Lorelei discovers the involvement of a powerful and ancient collective not known for their social skills.

Lorelei wants nothing more than to get back to her renovations and her life of solitude, but it becomes painfully clear that if she can’t fix this small-town problem, Fairhaven is going to suffer big-time consequences.

Another quick and fun read! I did enjoy getting to know a little bit more about Lorelei, but there are still way too many questions about her?? And considering this is the second book in the series, I'm not a big fan of that. The introduction of different supernaturals was pretty cool, though, as well as all the Alicia shenanigans.

A little disappointing

This book had barely any impact on the storyline. I really liked the first book and was ready to dig into this one. And it came across as more of a filler or something the author had to put out. The only redeeming thing was Lorelai's interaction w a certain little girl and even that was annoying. She says she doesn't want to get involved and does things half a$$. Even her initial interaction w Bruce made no sense. She only did it out of curiosity, not because there was any evidence anyone was being harmed. And that action brought more trouble to the ppl of the town with no repercussions to her. Things felt very disjointed.

Then I feel as if her relationship with Kane took 2 steps back. We learn a smidgen more abt Lorelai but all it does is bring more questions than answers. I honestly almost stopped reading mid book.

The other plus side and what saves this book are the secondary characters. Gun, Josephine, Otto, Dan, Ashley and the others are well written. I almost want to know more about them than the main characters. The next book will make or break this series. I guess I'm disappointed because the first book had such promise.

Dead of Night is book two in the Crossroads Queen series by Annabel Chase.

Well not a lot happens in this installment and as for the mystery it was good, but it didn’t have to happen. Lorelei could have avoided the issue on Theodore Street and if she did then we wouldn’t have had the issue of The Collective and all the deaths that occur in this novel.

I did enjoy following our heroine around, getting to know a little more about her, and the kid that comes to visit her at the Castle. I am disappointed in that we haven’t learned more about Lorelei. Their are still lots of questions and very little progress in this area. I’m frustrated with the author keeping us in the dark on Lorelei and why she wants to be alone.

What saves this novel is the secondary characters who are unique and interesting. I’d like to know more about them, but I had fun with Ashely, Otto, Ray, and others.

Dead of Night was an enjoyable paranormal mystery to read.

My main thoughts: better than the first book but STOP it with the secrets already: the reader is still being kept in the dark to the extreme. The author still isn’t revealing key info about Lorelei and it’s moving from “mysterious” to “frustrating and confusing” real fast.

I feel like I’m reading to find out what her deal is and not concentrating on the plot. It’s distracting and an odd writing choice. It was fine in the first book, but I thought we would finally get questions answered in this one. I also think the loner vibe is dangerously leaning towards a trope- every time the story leads to Lorelei having a connection that connection falls away.

Overall I found this book extremely frustrating but somehow still good (probably due to the shorter length)- a fast and easy read that was interesting enough to keep me going since I’m not choosy and also a fast reader. And I do really like Lorelei! I just want more information!

3.5/5.0

A much better story arc in this second book! I actually really had fun reading this story. The downsides are the EXTREMELY slow moving progress in character depth and relationships. But, the writing is engaging enough that I’ll pick up the next book.

not much progress from the first book

There was a small conflict which might have ramifications in the next few books. Another minor problem with a kid which will probably turn in nothing. We still don’t know who/what she is. There are some hints with the creature who killed the assassin but that’s all. Not much progress on the relationship between her and Kane. The seems interested but keeps the distance. He comment about not touching his hands but touching the fae because hers was cleaner was disgusting. Kane recoiled at that and should have said words on this. There was no excuse for the rudeness. The Alpha showed up to say “don’t know, don’t care” and left. Why was he in this book again?
We are no closer to understand her reasonings as we were in the beggining of the first book and if Ms. Chase pull another ending as she did on her Midnight Empire series, I will be mad. I want to give the author another chance as this story seems interesting.

Perfect

Breezed through this in a day. And it was a great read. Fast paced. No lulls in the storyline. But we're still trying to figure out just what our FMC is. Its driving me crazy. I can't settle on any idea. Starting 3rd book now.

The books are quick reads and I’m enjoying them. There is still no romance, but ground work is still being laid. My one big complaint is it recaps and repeats.

Dead of Night is the second book in the Crossroads Queen series. I decided to continue this series to see if we would get any further developments in the romance because I was confused why this series was marketed as a romance when there was no romance in the first book and so far, there is still no romance happening but I do know who the love interest is now. It seems like the author is trying to have an enemies to lovers thing going on between the characters and it's just not working for me because it's not true enemies to lovers. The characters obviously like each other and get along and have a friendship. When something goes wrong, the first person that they go to is the other person but when someone brings up their friendship they try to deny their friendship which was confusing for me. I also wanted to see if this book would give us a little bit more insight about Lorelei because after she was introduced to me in Book 1 she still felt like a stranger. A pet peeve of mine that I have in books is when authors create a character a certain way but then make them act against the way that they created them in order for the plot to happen and how I see it, that's what happened in this book. Lorelei keeps telling us why she moved to this small town is because she wants to not be around people and isolate herself but throughout this book, she keeps interfering in people's lives and it always doesn't end well. In my opinion, if she really wanted to be isolated away from everyone else she wouldn't be interfering in everyone's business. The plot of this story felt like a lucid dream and maybe that's because I was reading this while I was sick but the ending made no sense to me and the way that magic was used in the end confused me. I did enjoy aspects of the first book in the series which made me want to continue but I felt that this one took big steps back when it came to character and plot development. This author might just not be the match for me and that's okay.

We get it. Really, she wants to be left alone and never talk to a single person. For their own good, of course. It's tiring and repetitive and would make for a very boring book and life. Move on already.

And after that long in her "castle" there is only one room that is finished? I thought my progress was slow.

Annabel Chase always writes such interesting female characters and Lorelei Clay is no exception. She's magical, can see and control the dead she can also look into a.persons mind and make their worst nightmare real...........but that's not all she can do or is. Lorelei is in hiding she refuses to share with anyone what her magical abilities actually are, we know what she isn't, a necromancer, a witch, a demon, a vampire, a werewolf or a far and not I she she any minor supernatural whatever Lorelei Clay is she's special. Then there's Dane a demon, a price of hell, commander of thirty legions who is.so nice to Lorelei and so intrigued but when she needs help he is there ready to do whats needed. There are other characters an alpha werewolf, a blind vampire and a mate assassin to name.but a few. Lorelei allows nobody to get close.to her, she just wants to be left alone.and renovate her new home....Blackheads Castle or the Dump depending who you talk to......... Unfortunately for her she has chosen for her.home the site of.a.very special.crossroads where lots of.different magical planes converge instead of the normal.two. This means no quiet life for.Lorelei she would.move it she could.but all her.money is tied up in the castle so she's stuck dealing with the trouble that keeps.finding her door................ I did think this was going to be a three book series but it's not. It's going.to.run for six books so.plenty of time still for.people to keep.asking Laurelei what are you?..........

*Thoughts*

Annabel Chase's Dead of Night is the second installment in the author Crossroads Queen series. It has been six months since Lorelai Clay moved to the sleepy town of Fairhaven, Pennsylvania from London where she thought she would find peace and quiet while refurbishing the Bluebeard Castle. Anabel lives in a town that is close to the Crossroads, which means there are all sorts of paranormals living in town. Including a Prince of Hell, Kane Sullivan, who also heads an assassin guild.

This is a story and main character that drew me in deeper with each book. The first one had me hooked. As a person who prefers my own company best most of the time, I related to the main character on that level immediately. But Lorelei is so much more than she seems at first, not just in power, but in who she is deep in her soul and it’s a lovely journey to witness.

Still no answers on WHAT the mc is but I’ll be patient. Kind of. 😂 I still really enjoyed this book even though not much more happens. They are fairly short so I don’t hold it against them.

I liked this better than the first book, but still a solid three-star read. I don't think this series is ever going to be must-read, but it's keeping my focus, I like the world, I'm cautiously interested in the main character, and the supporting cast has some real potential. We'll see what happens when the author drops what "species" Lorelei is, but I'm enjoying it.

Slow progression

While I did enjoy the book the and the premise the storyline is lacking. The MC is constantly worried about herself and her secret and tries to frame it as “protecting the people of the town” yet she also constantly talks about wanting seclusion and distances herself from everyone in town. The side characters are great but the relationships are hollow, except for the “friends” from London that already know her secret. Think of how much the relationships can grow when she is willing to trust some enough to be open. That would bring much more depth and complexity to the relationships she has with other characters, will bring definition to the side characters as “heroes” or “villains.” In the meantime the audience has reservations about who to invest in.

I feel like there is so much potential in the main character but the first 2 books have just fallen flat. There are enough hints and context for the reader to piece together what the main character is but there is frustration with the author when it feels like a game to drag the reader along and still leave us hanging. How can we bond with the main character when we are also locked out?

I will attempt to read the third book when it comes out but if it is more of the same I will have to pass on the rest of the series.

somehow shorter?

I like the premise of this series and the characters feel more real than most contemporary fantasy. However, the first book felt so fast and mostly focused on the investigating (an opportunity to introduce characters) and minimal personal storyline development. Meanwhile, the sequel hardly had any personal development AGAIN and the investigation was kind of meh. It’s honestly starting to feel like each book is an “episode” with the speed at which the story is developing in regards to the character’s life (her renovations are not what I want to read about no matter how much I enjoy interior design). And if this series is planning on continuing dragging me along at such a sedate pace I’m going to have to bail. I can’t read a story using an arc meant for rapid release when there are months between each book. Like the contents of the sequel was consumed in a blink, so much more could have happened, sub plot lines emerging and developing. Yet somehow I feel like I’m still reading the first book. Kind of upset because I can tell the lead has so much potential.

This was more like a 3.5 star for me, but based on the first book, I will give it 4, in the hopes that the series will still end up closer to a 4 than a 3.

This book was disappointing compared to the first. It seemed like little actually happened. And the last fighting scene was exceptionally dissatisfying. They were both helpless!! Really? Without a a third party helping them.... what would've happened? How depressing. I assumed they were both a little more powerful and inventive than that.

It also was disheartening to see the FC causing

I still like the series and look forward to the next title. I just hope it will be more like the first book.

This series is like M&Ms, i couldn't stop at book one. The plot moves fast, i love the unexpected twists, interesting magical beings, you don't always see in paranormal fiction, and the murder mystery angel! I'm enjoying Lorelei grow and develop relationships with the towns folks and ghosts, despite herself.

Our girl can get in her own way often! Not that I blame her with the secrets she's carrying! Which we've yet to have fully revealed. I enjoy the breadcrumbs Ms. Chase keeps sprinkling our way. I have some guesses!

When a realtor contacts her looking to have a house exorcised of the ghost of its former tenant so it can be sold in exchange for someone to come in and fix her groody moat, it's an offer she can't refuse. The job turns out to be anything but simple when she's booted from the home and left wondering what's behind the wards so powerful, she needs helps breaking them.

This is when the fun starts! Enter our delicious mysterious bartending demon who runs the assassin's guild in town. I won't give away too much, but I'll say these books just get better!

Good

NOTE: you’ll need to read book one before picking up this book. It starts shortly after the events of that book, and references them a time or two.

It was the desire for a working moat that started it all, and Lorelei Clay thought that all she had to do was rid a house of a lingering ghost.
Unfortunately, there was a lot more to it than that, and Lorelei quickly finds herself dealing with a situation…

Secrets are hard to keep, and Lorelei has been quite successful so far, but this story reveals a great deal to the reader, and perhaps a little to the interested parties in Fairhaven! She is a natural magnet for trouble, and this book proves it.

That being said, it’s an engrossing read, with lots of magical mishaps, some magical battles, a number of supernaturals playing board games, and a few ghosts.
A thoroughly entertaining, magical tale, for urban fantasy fans.

DNF - quit at 54%
I tried to finish this, but I just couldn’t get into it. I enjoyed the first book, but this one didn’t hold my attention. I got bored with her solving all of these crimes in this small town, but never getting involved as friends with the town’s people if she can help it, or getting into a romance. I think the local club owner might be interested in her, but I don’t see it evolving on her end, this is getting to be like watching mud dry. I like to read Paranormal romance, not Paranormal Investigations. This ended up feeling more “Nancy Drew” with a paranormal twist and meant for a slightly older audience, (maybe NA) cause other than people dying, I didn’t read anything sexual. It took me several days after putting it down and not wanting to pick it back up, to give up.

At my age (approaching 62), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Dead of Night is the second book in the Crossroads Queen urban fantasy series by Annabel Chase.

I absolutely love our heroine, Lorelei Clay. She gets an offer for help with her moat, but she must help out with what is supposed to be an easy task, but nothing is ever easy in Fairhaven.

This Urban Fantasy is so good! The worldbuilding and the different paranormal are so much fun.
I especially love the vampires and assassins in the story!

Parts of the story really surprised me, and I like how the author slowly reveals what Lorelei's powers are.

Highly recommend reading the first book in the series Dead to the World!

entertaining in action packed urban fantasy series

This is an entertaining and action packed urban fantasy series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. A young woman who has unique abilaties to see speak and even control ghosts and spirits among a great many other things has moved back to a small town in America to try and just be alone And live her life. She has bought an old rundown castle it was built by a rich guy that passed away and let it run down. It needs a lot of work and time and money so she’s going to just work on it as it goes. As time goes on She meets a few ghosts and meets a few other supernaturals around the town and is getting involved in different issues and adventures around the town. Reading to see where her adventure leads her this time.

2,5 stars. Lorelai is an okayish heroine.

But: enough with the stupid mystery around her powers.

Plus, I don't really see the charme in the menagerie of secondary characters.

There is the blind vampire, the Grandma ghost, the Grandpa carpenter ghost, his living grand-daughter, friends from her old life like Matilda, Josefine the security head/vampire, the alpha werewolf, the sexy demon prince of hell, the other demon duke of hell and so on and so forth.
It gets tedious and no one really gave me any deep resonance. They just appear and disappear in the story, there is no emotional impact and the plot moves forward very slowly.

I am dragging on with the next installment, but I can't really muster any excitement about the big bad corporation (who is somehow so much worse than demons and a group of elite assassins that torture and kill people...).

Intrigue continues...

As do the whispers around Fairhaven. 'Big Boss', Fatima, the Fairhaven realtor calls, not to buy Bluebeards Castle but because there's a property in town that has gone untended for several months and she believes the reclusive owner has died.

Problem is no one can enter the property and suspecting it could just be ghost related means 'Big Boss' is prepared to bribe Lorelei with offers to get her moat fixed up to resolve it.

When the Lorelei discovers the truth, she's in deep enough to risk the whole town. Can she work with those around her to fix the problem before it's too late?

There are a few holes... the lack of bodies for the police, the failure to keep the Chief informed, and the 'humans' complete acceptance of the situations they find themselves in but overall its far better than the other series, that I have read so far, by Chase...

I'm pretty annoyed with all the mystery as well as how many things get repeated over and over again, like how the ghosts aren't allowed in her house, or else! Or how she is this super powerful being that somehow is badass even though she doesn't really do much in these books? There is a lot of talking and not enough doing.

I also don't like how Lorelei is insistent on the fact that she wants to be alone, but then takes responsibility for a teen, goes out to do jobs for the chief, and wants to host a funeral? Lorelei seeing Otto makes sense since it's a one-on-one thing with someone else who doesn't do social interaction. But everything else? I don't think so.

Both book one and two seemed like filler books? There wasn't a lot going on, and even when things happened, it felt really underwhelming.

My biggest issue with this book was only that I wanted it to be longer. The banter and situational stuff in this book was very entertaining to me. But I read the whole thing on a very short period of time.

On the banter/situational stuff, there is an aside that happens at the public library that I found hilarious. And kinda accurate too, somehow.

There a touch more revealed about who the MC is supposed to be, but there are more threads left hanging than not. And sucking, there is a surprisingly important scene but around Scrabble, which I loved because it's not exactly utilized in every book.

I wish we got a little more in terms of answers rather than questions, by ratio. But I considered this very enjoyable and preordered the next one based on how I continued to enjoy this series.

YES PLEASE!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I really liked the first book of the series, but this second one is truly amazing! As the story progresses, it gets better and better. I mentioned in my review of the first book, that even though I truly liked the FMC due to the fact that she is strong, smart and self sufficient, it bothered me that she was too aloof. In this second book, she still is her sarcastic self, but her snark and personality made me smile and laugh this time around. I guess you could say she is really growing on me 😊 A story with plenty of action, intrigue, great characters and plenty of mystery. Even though there is still no romance, you can feel there is something brewing between Lorelei and Kane. Cannot wait to read the next book! Highly recommended
