Makoto Shinkai (新海 誠 Shinkai Makoto?), born as Makoto Niitsu (新津 誠 Niitsu Makoto?, February 9, 1973) is a Japanese director of anime and former graphic designer. A native of the Nagano Prefecture, Shinkai studied Japanese literature at Chuo University where he was a member of juvenile literature club where he drew picture books. *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*

I know there is a film adaption of this manga and since I wasn't sure if I should watch it or not and saw that this book was available on NetGalley I decided to just give it a try.

The idea is very unique and interesting, especially as we not only have doors that led to somewhere completely else but also ruin stones that take form when one touches them. I think that the cat in this manga is drawn very good, like the different colour patterns and detail for the eyes. The other characters were drawn quite good too. We got to know lots of characters and they were all kind of Suzume's and Souta's journey and helped her out. The twins were quite funny.

Only thing I really disliked was that one scene where Souta was sleeping and instead of waking him up normally she got the idea of kissing him. If they wouldn't have such a great age gap (teenager and adult) I would have found it funny, but that moment was rather weird and not something I would have liked to read. To be honest their whole relationship seemed a bit out of place, especially how they met and how he just tries to get rid of her and she doesn't stop. I never understood that concept of anime characters getting out of nowhere the desire to help and be pushy about it and run away from home 'cause an adventure is waiting for them.

End note/Final thoughts:

Thank you Kodansha Comics for the advanced reader copy of Suzume Vol. 1 by Makoto Shinkai and Denki Amashima.

I'm reading it without watching the movie version. As far as I'm concerned, this book is about grieving on something gone. If you are not familiar with Makoto Shinkai's work, you would find his story a bit confusing.
.
.
🖤 I really enjoyed the whole story and the characters. Although Shouta had been cursed into a yellow chair, I still can feel the chemistry between him and Suzume. I also loved the perfect ending. It does gives you the answer to the beginning of the story. Now I'm looking forward to watch the movie version.

Il finale, come sempre, è straziante fino all’ultima pagina. Davvero bello.

Do you have the strength to face what lies beyond?

Just like the movie, Suzume hits home with themes of natural disasters, self-discovery, love/loss and fear of the future. There's an abundance of imaginative story telling, as well as emotional depth. However! What I liked most about reading the novel version of this beloved movie was the insight into Suzume's thoughts. She was incredibly delightful, humorous and relatable all wrapped up in a little package that almost had me adoring the novel more than the move, which I wasn't expecting.

Suzume’s character development was critical and nuanced. Her emotional growth throughout the novel was handled with sincerity and depth that I couldn't help but feel connected to her inner struggles and triumphs. Similar to the movie, Souta was a highlight! The mere fact that he was a chair and still carried 50% of the plot is sheer mastery within storytelling. Not only that, Shinkai’s ability to weave intricate, heartfelt emotions into the fabric of the story created a powerful and moving reading experience. I really loved reading the tender bond that formed between Suzume and Souta.

Not only was the prose lyrical and evocative, the chapters' ability to build on each other into something insurmountable was exquisite. It was fast paced, and easily digestible, but still held depth with every interaction. For anyone looking for a novel that combines magical realism with heartfelt storytelling, Suzume is an absolute must-read. :)

5 stars for me!

The book had an interesting premise, but it really sagged in the middle. By that point the novelty of the premise has worn off, and the travelog format wasn't strong enough to sustain the story on its own. A twist around the 70% mark breathed new life in the story and led it to finish strong. The last 50 pages or so introduced some thematic elements that made the story much more cohesive and added some much needed depth to the main character. However, I can't help but role my eyes at Suzume feeling that Souta was *so* important to her and she liked him *so* much after literally 4 days of knowing him, with him spending 90% of that time as a chair

"Suzume" follows the story of a teen girl who accidentally messes with a portal that lets out giant earthquake causing worms. In order to put things right, she goes on an adventure across Japan with a man turned sentient chair to find the keystone who can permanently close all the doors and stop the chaos she has unwittingly started.

This story is great! Super creative, in the magical realism genre. The artwork is really detailed and the story makes it clear what is going on. The biggest thing I would say is, just watch the movie. The story is the exact same, but is even more special in the movie due to it being in color, with voice acting. I also think this should have just been combined into one large novel instead of breaking the story up into 2 or 3 novels.

I highly recommend "Suzume" to YA and fantasy readers. It's a unique and fast paced adventure that anyone can enjoy!

Thank you Netgalley and Yen Press for providing me an eARC of this manga

3.5 stars.

This manga is an adaptation of the ononimous animated movie. I watched the movie before and loved it. The manga follows the movie exactly, even if it covers only one third of it, but it falls a little short. First of all, the dialogues are sketchy and the translation sometimes felt off with expressions that I hardly hear in everyday language (e.g. "let's call a grown-up! / a grown-up could help...").
The story is beautiful, but here it moves very fast with too little explanation and it feels dry. In the movie I felt attached to every character, each of them was very well drawn, but here the characterisation is very bare bones.
My review is somewhat influenced by the fact that I saw the movie first, as I was able to recall the emotions I felt while watching it here while reading, but I'm pretty sure my opinion would be harsher if I hadn't seen the movie first, for the reasons I have listed above.
All in all, I would recommend watching the film and skipping the manga adaptation, which doesn't do justice to the source material.

I haven’t watched the film and am pretty much new to manga reading. I just picked this one based on the artwork. It didn’t disappoint me at all.
The characters are amazing , so are the illustrations. The conversations between Souta in char form and Cat Daijin is hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I can’t wait to know what happens in the second volume. How can Suzume close the doors and connection between her and Soutu.

Want to thank Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.

Wow wow wow. I loved this manga so much! The story line, the chair, and everything else that comes with it. It has a bit of mystery to it that has me on the edge of my seat and I'd like to see where it goes. Though the ending left on such a cliffhanger! And for it to have come out in 2022 and the second volume in 2024? Crazy! Def going to watch the movie now!

Thank you NetGalley for the digital copy of this volume.

Suzume is a junior high schooler living with her aunt. She meets a mysterious guy on the side of the road and offers him directions. When she arrives at school, she finds out that she just sent him to a very dangerous place. Worried, she rushes to try to warn him. Here she finds a magical door and a terrifying worm. She dislodges the keystone that she and the stranger need to seal the door for good. And so begins a journey to reclaim the keystone and seal the worm.

Pretty interesting story. I love how Suzume and Souto make friends all along the way that are ready and willing to help them out.

The premise for Suzume sounds really interesting, but I feel like the execution is kind of lacking. Like a lot of anime plots, Suzume meets a handsome stranger that she knows nothing about and decides to follow him blindly into an adventure. We know nothing about this guy and we don’t end up knowing anything by the end of the first volume but it’s a common trope so I was willing to roll with that one. So there is a magical world that only grumpy hot guy, Souta, can see and now without explanation, so can Suzume. Again, completely standard so I’ll go with it. That’s about all we get to know. There are some other things that happen fast without explanation that I don’t want to spoil anything.

However, you know what does get a majority of the time, interacting with random characters on the adventure that you’ll probably never see again. The biggest problem is that the things that need explained aren’t, and the mundane that aren’t exciting drag too long. Also, I don’t know if it’s because I’m older than when I originally got into anime & manga and liked it in my teens, but the whole story and how the charters react is really unbelievable. Everyone is way too trusting and unrealistic just to add to the story. Suzume is a little bit of an insipid love struck idiot. I normally like female based manga, but this one just isn’t it.

Note: This would be fine in a middle school library. A few swear words but no situations that aren’t G rated. Maybe at 40, I’m just not the intended audience.

Thank you to NetGalley the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

"I wonder why it feels so awful. To be so powerless on your own. That you have to rely on other people to protect you."

✨𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐓:

Knowing it’s a Makoto Shinkai film and manga, I was super excited. I still can’t get over Your Name—I tear up every time I watch it, no matter how many times. So, I decided to check out the anime adaptation of Suzume and loved it. The graphics were really amazing, and I enjoyed it a lot. I was also shocked and thrilled to discover on NetGalley that the revised manga version of Suzume is set to be published in September. I just couldn’t contain my excitement to read this beautiful manga in advance.

Suzume follows Suzume Iwato and Souta Munakata as they close magical doors in abandoned places that were damaged by calamities. OMG! Souta is such a beautiful and charming man! I can’t help but root for him and Suzume as a couple. Even with their age gap, I’m hopeful there’ll be some romantic development between them. I can’t wait to see them together!

One thing I love about anime and manga is how they often include chance encounters and quirky situations. Daijin, the keystone god who cursed Souta, was both clever and adorable. I also loved the addition of social media; it was witty of Makoto Shinkai to include that in their journey to find Daijin.

Overall, I definitely recommend this to fans of Your Name and Makoto Shinkai.

It's hard to read this without thinking about the film, especially since I've watched it quite a few times now. In some ways this is a detriment as aspects of the film or scenes which I particularly loved or had notable impact due to the animate or music etc. don't have quite the same effect when read. For the most part however, Suzume does an excellent job of creating the same feelings which had such an impact on me the first time I watched it. The way novels bring your attention to details that aren't explicit or are left to the background in a film is something that can give a new perspective or provoke new thoughts on a previously experienced story.

The places she visits throughout her journey with Souta are abandoned and forgotten; sad but in a nostalgic sort of way. By contrast her home town is desolate. Her diary and it's coloured black pages, day after day of her wanting to write about her finding her mum and failing. She is no longer in a bathhouse, or school, or theme park, she is in a place of despair. This thematic shift follows closely her own ups and downs of her journey, each aspect complimenting and emphasising the emotions of the other.

This is my second favorite Shinkai work after 5 Centimeters Per Second, so it doesn’t surprise me I enjoyed the novel form just as much as the film. I really like Suzume as a protagonist and the explorations of grief after such a vast tragedy is done very uniquely. While sure there is a touch of romance, largely this is Suzume’s story of how she will continue to grow and move forward in the face of an event that had such an unequivocally large impact on her life, and it’s that part of the story that really resonates with me personally.
