Destroy Me

Rate this book
Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she’ll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of...

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

Set after Shatter Me and before its forthcoming sequel, Unravel Me, Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

5/5 heartbreaking stars.
This novella is a must-read for anyone reading the series.
While reading, you may feel how much you cannot contain Warner's feelings. This person is a mess of disappointment, bad influence, abuse and anger from the world around him. So much pain, shame, hatred- all in a 19 year-old boy. Many readers hated Warner in the first book. I didn’t. I knew -felt- how many walls were around him, walls he had built. I noticed that his behavior was a red light. In this novella you see exactly how he does it. How he builds his walls, how he suffers. You understand what was behind every decision and every move he made in the first book.

Beware, my friends, after this novella you won't have a way back. You won't be able to resist your love for Warner. Because this kid will break your heart to pieces.

From Warner’s POV, I read this out of order but it would’ve been so helpful to understand why he loved Juliette had I read it when I was supposed to at the beginning!

Really enjoyed getting Warner's perspective & getting more insights into his motivations. My heart is definitely softening for Warner.

I also thought it was really cool that there were excerpts from Warner's files & files on Juliette and the other characters at the end.

“this girl is destroying me.”

this novella did in fact, destroy me

so can we all admit we fell more in love with aaron warner after reading this novella.
— we got to see things from warner’s perspective and saw he really is just a lost, tortured soul and is not as cold as he gives off. we were shown his vulnerability—but also saw he just wants to be with juliette and wants her to love him.
i enjoyed reading his perspective and his fascination with juliette and his quest to have her. he thinks he has found someone just like him and feels she will understand that they’re the same and will love him for him.

NO ONE TALK TO ME ABOUT CHAPTER 16—IT MADE ME SO MISERABLE I JUST WANT TO HUG WARNER AND TELL HIM I LOVE HIM!!

quotes:

“she must’ve done something extraordinary, and i wasn’t even there to witness it.”
losing my mind over this!!!

“and i felt it then: this strange, inexplicable sense that she might be the only person in the world i could really care about.”

“i’m safe in the company of her thoughts; i feel welcome, somehow. understood. so much so that some days i manage to forget that she’s the one who put this bullet hole in my arm. i almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I’ve fallen for her.
and i’ve fallen.
so hard.”
EMOTIONAL FUCKING DAMAGE

Update 06-19-15: Tahereh Mafi has just announced that Shatter Me is going to be a tv show! OHMYGOD. I have so many feels! We are finally going to see a physical manifestation of Warner! WHY ISN'T EVERYONE ELSE FREAKING OUT?!

It would be a huge mistake if they don't cast Hunter Parrish because he looks perfect as Warner!

-----

SHE WILL CHOOSE ME.

October 16, 2012! I watched Tahereh Mafi's video of this saying that Destroy Me is written EXCLUSIVELY from Warner's point of view!

Tahereh Mafi, you've already shattered me with your first book, and now you're destroying me (in a very good way) as well!

description

Update 6-25-12: The publication date was moved to October 2nd! Oh yeah!

*************

AFTER READING: I don't know why it took me so long to read this, but omg! TEAM WARNER! If Juliette ends up with Adam, I would cry.

Favorite quotations:
1. I watched the unassuming outline of this girl I could not see and did not know, and I felt an unbelievable amount of respect for her. I admired her, envied her composure--her steadiness in the face of all she'd been forced to endure. I don't know that I understood what it was, exactly, I was feeling at the time, but I knew I wanted her all to myself.

2. Her face keeps cropping up, her journal taunting me from its place in my pocket. And I begin to realize that some small part of me doesn't want to wish away the thoughts of her. Some part of me enjoys the torture.
This girl is destroying me.

3. I don't consider myself a moral man. I do not philosophize about life or bother with the laws and principles that govern most people. I do not pretend to know the difference between right and wrong. But I do live by a certain kind of code. And sometimes, I think you have to learn to shoot first.
Seamus Fletcher was murdering his family. And I shot him in the forehead because I thought it'd be kinder than ripping him to pieces by hand.

4. I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I've fallen for her.
And I've fallen.
So hard.

love is heartless bastard

On the one hand, I want to give this all five stars because Warner, but on the other hand, I cannot do so because this was some other Warner. I hope that he will remain the same and by that, I mean the slightly evil but still totally irresistible. Well, no still because I just cannot get enough of wicked characters, those are just the best.

...from the perspective of the villain we all love to hate, Warner.

But I don't hate Warner. I looove him.

I didn't thought I could possibly love Warner more but I was wrong. My God,he is such a sweetheart. That scene with the dog killed me. I recently saw Equilibrium and something similar happened over there.

I don't usually rate novellas/short stories but in this case I will make an exception.

Well, this exists. I wish it didn't.

Destroy Me is the novella that takes place during the events towards the end of Shatter Me. Unfortunately, it's written from Warner's perspective, which simultaneously disgusts me and makes me want to unsubscribe from life.

In case you're new to this series, Warner is the psycho stalker who also happens to be *ahem* irrevocably in love with Juliette, the protagonist of the Shatter Me series. He had a revelation sometime off-page because all of a sudden he is disgusted with himself (it was about time) and decides to make Juliette love him by being nice to her. Who would have thought. Who would have thought.

This novella is so short and also so problematic. Apparently Warner is the preferred love interest. Adam may be bland, but at least he's not, well... a serial killer with serious problems. I've read some reviews of Adam's novella, and he gets worse. But so far, even though I want to erase both men off the face of the earth, Adam is better. Because at least he isn't evil. I don't care about Warner's tortured past or whatever, that's not an excuse to be a terrible person. He's not even a compelling terrible person, like Cardan or Kaz. He's just bad.

1.5 stars, rounded up because of that one side character who kept trying to get Warner to drink coffee

Okay, I think Warner just needs a therapist, that's all I got from this story. And honey, he's OBSESSED. This isn't love, it's obsession. Like sir, please, this isn't healthy.

But this book was slightly better than the first book for these reason:

• it was shorter. Less suffering. It went by quickly.

•no Adam and Juliette making out every .5 seconds.

• even if I don't like Warner. at least he has a personality (even if it sucks) unlike Adam.

Now here are the reasons I didn't like this book:

• It made no sense. Warner seems like a completely different person. A complete 180 from who we knew in Shatter me. Even if this is supposed to be the start of his redemption arc (a tragic backstory doesn't redeem a person for being terrible, just saying) , or to help us see what is going on inside his head, it could have at least hinted at that from Juliette's POV. Like perhaps a bit of sympathy from her, or him opening up to her a tiny bit.

• It was a bit unnecessary. I don't understand why there are so many add ons to the "original trilogy". Because I feel like I must read the .5 books, because they are there for a reason, even if the reason is so minor. And it was repetitive. We just followed Warner doing the same thing in different variations.

• It could have at the very least used this book to give some world building, but instead it was just 100 pages of Warner being angsty.

• I still don't see the appeal with Warner. I just read an entire novella from his POV and I got nothing. He still concerns me, and is big fat red flag. His possessiveness isn't cute. And I would be able to ignore it, if Adam made up for it. But Adam has no personality. So basically, both love interests are trash. Not that Juliette deserves anything more.

That seems to be the only thing me and Warner Bros. agree on:
A betrayal that somehow seemed impossible. That she would leave me for a robotic, unfeeling idiot like Kent. His thoughts are so empty, so mindless; it's like conversing with a desk lamp. I don't understand what he could've offered her, what she could've possibly seem in him except a tool for escape.

Anyways, hopefully the series gets better. And at least this book was a fast read, and if you are considering reading this, it doesn't hurt to do so. But I got nothing of substance out of this, and if anything, it just made me more angry.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤ "I grieve nothing. I take everything."

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ━ 2.8 - 3.0 ☆ ━
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ⊱ ──── might contain spoilers ────⊰

ㅤㅤI'll start by mentioning that I won't be writing an exhaustive review for this brief piece of work. However, as sad as it may sound, I can't believe I enjoyed this brief novella much more than I liked the first book in this series.

ㅤㅤI'm not typically a fan of novellas inserted between the main books in a series, especially when they focus on other characters' points of view, but I think it was a brilliant idea to introduce Warner's POV.
ㅤㅤHe's a highly intriguing character, and you can tell from the moment he appears in the first book. He is exceedingly complex and secretive due to his position, and there is certainly much more to him than the slightly deranged character we encounter briefly in 'Shatter Me'. I love this Joker-esque style of madness, and it's fantastic to see something similar being explored in a book. Was this one of the best pieces of work I've ever read? Absolutely not; not even close. But I actually found myself enjoying this and being rather eager to read more about everything that was going on on the other side of things. Therefore, it was indeed a really good idea to shed some light into Warner's mind.

ㅤㅤI really thought it somehow poetic in a sense that we finally get to see more inside Juliette's diary and that this is done via Warner's point of view. I believe this is just what we needed to grasp that, as Warner stated, they are more alike than we could have thought.
ㅤㅤAnd while I'm here, I'd want to point out that, despite the fact that this requires a lot more in terms of writing, I was astonished to find Warner's point of view much better laid out on the page. I especially appreciated the parts of shock and brutality that were brought so unexpectedly (the simulation chapter gave me chills), which did an excellent job of reinforcing this oppressive, Orwellian reality. Of course, this was even better accentuate by the presence of Warner's complete psychotic bastard of a father which I have a feeling we'll not get rid of too soon; or better said soon enough.

ㅤㅤI will finally only end this by saying that, as a clean freak, I found myself resonating with Warner much more than I imagined. (Of course, I only simply enjoy things being clean, I do not go around murdering people 😭). So you can very well imagine why these specific following quotes were my favourite in this book.

ㅤㅤ"I have an extremely low threshold for disorder; it offends my very being."

ㅤㅤ"And whenever I’m experiencing any extreme level of emotion, the only thing that settles my nerves is a long bath."

Re-Read : (13/02/2018)

I love Warner so much !, I've possibly already mentioned in my old review down here, but I'll say it again. This book is so necessary if you're reading the Shatter Me trilogy, I think that will give you a new perspective of Warner and his personal story, you can't miss this one, of course it's a 5/5 Stars for me, always

“I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I've fallen for her.
And I've fallen.
So hard.
I've hit the ground.”

Oh Warner ! . I'm officially in love with this character !. This has been, Hard, Raw and Real ... So many feelings ...

I think this novella is one of the best I've read. This well thought out and recited, so that you can see the soul of the character, it's like, breaks his armor and we see Warner for what he really is, how he has arrived where it is and why.

This reading has come to my heart and I think it has been written by the author in a very intelligent way, no doubt , we understand many things that Warner has said and done in Shatter Me. And all those things made me love this character even more !.

“I’ve come to believe that the most dangerous man in the world is the one who feels no remorse. The one who never apologizes and therefore seeks no forgiveness. Because in the end it is our emotions that make us week, not our actions.”

I have marveled reading the Warner's feelings toward Juliette! . It's just beautiful !. It is so real and sincere, the manifestation of him dreams, desires and darkest thoughts, has been brilliant; I really hope that at some point of the following book Juliette achieves to know all there in the head and in the heart of Warner, because, really girls!, who would resist !.

“She is a soft, deadly creature. Kind and timid and terrifying. She's completely out of control and has no idea what she's capable of. And even though she hates me, I can't help but be fascinated by her. I'm enchanted by her pretend-innocence; jealous, even, of the power she wields so unwittingly. I want so much to be a part of her world. I want to know what it's like to be in her mind, to feel what she feels. It seems a tremendous weight to carry.
And now she's out there, somewhere, unleashed on society.
What a beautiful disaster.”

Officially I hate Warner's father , he has so much power over his son and knows exactly how to make him suffer and he achieved disarm him so easily only with words. I think he may have a greater role in the plot during the next book and that makes me very nervous.

So I'm excited to start with Unravel Me ... I'm looking for a lot in this next book, I hope it to reach my expectations.:)

In Shatter Me Juliette seduced and then wounded Warner with his own weapon to escape and help Adam, but Warner is still obsessed with her.

For people who do not like spoilers, I suggest to leave this supplementary book to the end because it gives way too much information. It is written from Warner's point of view and for me it is as wonderful as I thought.

✨✨✨

Wait why did I actually eat this up the second time round?! 🤭🤭 I wasn't expecting to love my reread bc it's just a novella, but i had the BEST time 💘💘

“I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I've fallen for her.
And I've fallen.
So hard.
I've hit the ground.” ~ SCREAMINGG

“Kenji is a walking paradox of Unflinchingly Serious Person and 12-Year-Old Boy Going Through Puberty all rolled into one.” ~ LMAO i love kenji

The first time I read this, I actually read this out of order (i think i read it after Defy Me) so it didn't do much for me and I wasn't obsessed. But something about this reread just really hit and I completely ate this up 🤭🤭

Like, 100 pages of just the loml Aaron Warner's pov?! YES PLS ✋️ I swear i am OBSESSED with this man, and this novella really solidified that. Just the way he thinks about Juliette and how obsessed he is just gets me every time 😩😩🦋🦋 HE IS THE STANDARD 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️

“That this girl would know exactly how to shatter me.”

“This girl is destroying me. A girl who has spent the last year in an insane asylum. A girl who would try to shoot me dead for kissing her. A girl who ran off with another man just to get away from me. Of course this is the girl I would fall for. I close a hand over my mouth. I am losing my mind.”

So, even tho i didn't love the other novellas in this series, this one is so worth it imo!! 🫶🫶 If you couldn't tell, i just love aaron warner 🤭🤭💘💘

i will definitely be skipping adam's novella tho<3

Yes Warner, yes, I will marry you.

I really liked this novella, and I'm glad I read it after Ignite Me, because I was discovering these great things about Warner at the same time Juliette was <3. And I just knew it! I knew Warner had so much more inside of him and this just made me love him more if that's even possible.

people seldom realize that they tell lies with their lips and truth with their eyes all the time.

. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁

fine, I admit it. I like warner.

He’s not making his way onto my list of book boyfriends, mind you. At least not yet. I can’t quite find his traumatized, ocd self with an overdose of daddy issues attractive, per se, but I am… interested. However, I do appreciate him as a person. He’s not quite as evil as I thought he was and he has a well rounded character. I really enjoyed this novella; it was well-written and gave a lot of helpful insight on warner’s character. I’d definitely recommend reading this one in between the first and second books!

Warning: Do not read if you didn't read "Shatter Me" and don't want to be spoiled?! *lol*

I'm not quite sure if an additional short story to a series can really spoil you, but I thought I might warn you just in case! ;-P
But then again the only people who will read this will be people who loved the series so umm.... We're good?! *lol*

Anywayyyyyyy!

First of all: I already liked Warner in “Shatter me” and to read his POV in “Destroy me” only caused me to love him even more! XD

I L.O.V.E. Warner and I want to hug him and heal his broken heart! Gosh! That poor boy! That lovely ruined and lonely little thing! To read what he thinks, what he feels and to know that Juliette’s written words and actions destroyed him… It was just too much to bear! T_T
I hated to read how much he struggled and how broken he truly is and I really really really hope that Juliette will give him a chance to win her heart. >_< His love for her is so intense that it actually hurt and I don’t even know how he’s able to get up each and every day. I mean, hell she shot him and considering his feelings this must have hurt at least as much as the wound! =(

Well anyway! I liked his relationship with Delalieu and I hated his father! With a fierce passion! *grrr*
That scene where he almost choked his own son? Gosh how much I despise him!
Can anyone get rid of this man in the next few books? *hires Celaena*

Since I’m a sucker for quotes I’m going to end this review with the ones I liked the most:

The things I said to her.
A tight breath.
The way I touched her.
My jaw tenses.
If it were nothing but sexual attraction I’m sure I would not suffer such unbearable humiliation. But I wanted so much more than her body.

Yesh, you wanted to love her and she shot you! Dang it! T_T

“I drop the bread back onto my plate. “My opinions,” I say to him, quietly this time, “should not so easily break your own. Stand by your convictions. Form clear and logical arguments. Even if I disagree.”

I adored him for that sentence alone! XD

“His hand closes around my throat.
The movement is so rough and violent I’m almost relieved. Some part of me always hopes he’ll go through with it; that maybe this time he’ll actually let me die. But he never does. It never lasts.
Torture is not torture when there’s any hope of relief.”

That moment killed me, I swear! >_<

“I did not bring her on base to exploit her ability. And I certainly did not expect to fall for her in the process.
But these truths and my real motivations will be buried with me.”

Jeez! Hopefully not!!!

“A look into her mind.
And though the anticipation is killing me, I’m also acutely aware of just how badly this might backfire. I’m suddenly not sure I ever want to know. And yet I do. I definitely do.”

Warner is so torn it’s almost painful! XD

“On the battlefield, I’m able to disconnect myself from the motions I’ve been taught to memorize. I’ve developed a reputation as a cold, unfeeling monster wo fears nothing and cares for less.
But this is all very deceiving.
Because the truth is, I am nothing but a coward.”

You’re brave Warner! So brave! Don’t let anyone tell you any different!!!

“But there are some things I do not forgive.
I don’t consider myself a moral man. I do not philosophize about life or bother with the laws and principles that govern most people. I do not pretend to know the difference between right and wrong. But I do live by a certain kind of code. And sometimes, I think, you have to learn how to shoot first.”

It was so sad that all his efforts had been in vain, but he’s trying to be a good person and that counts for something! =)

“Love is a heartless bastard.
I’m driving myself insane.”

Warner you truly destroyed me… in the best possible way!

And with that sentence
my review actually ends! ;-)

・❥・ Mood of the book: Softcore by The Neighbourhood

First, I have to say that my way of rating novellas has nothing to do with my way of rating 'normal books', so the rating I have given tho it is not that bad.

This review will be very short since this novel only has 94 pages and I don't have much more to say.

»–𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔–«

This novella is told from Warner's point of view, which is a plus, because Warner is WITHOUT A DOUBT, the best character in the series at the moment.

It has been very interesting to see his thoughts on Juliette, it gives us another perspective of the things that happened in the first book, and we also discover things about Warner's past, which makes me interested in continuing reading the series and sheds a lot of light on the character. I have to say that yes, IM SOFT FOR HIM.

I don't think there is much more to highlight, simply a short novella, which contributes things to the story but due to its length it fails to awaken any kind of feelings or emotions in me. I will continue reading the series.

»– 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒒𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔 –«

'I want so much to be a part of her world. I want to know what it’s like to be in her mind, to feel what she feels.'

'That this girl would know exactly how to shatter me.'

'I’ve felt shame and cowardice, weakness and strength. I’ve known terror and indifference, self-hate and general disgust. I’ve seen things that cannot be unseen. And yet I’ve known nothing like this terrible, horrible, paralyzing feeling. I feel crippled. Desperate and out of control. And it keeps getting worse. Every day I feel sick. Empty and somehow aching. Love is a heartless bastard.'

I most definitely needed this novella. It shows Warner's perspective of things and his complicated yet heartfelt feelings for Juliette giving us a deep insight into his character complex. He may not be a good person, but we get to know that the world wasn't good to him either, and I rooted for him profoundly. The author also shares with the readers his past showing that he is not the monster he is thought to be, it was all a facade and that deep down, he has feelings too and seeing Juliette escape like that shattered them.
All in all, it was amazing getting to know more about Warner, his dark feelings, his past struggles and he's definitely the most interesting character I've ever read about.

“Sometimes I wish I could step outside of myself for a while.
I want to leave this worn body behind, but my chains are too many, my weights too heavy.
This life is all that’s left of me.
And I know I won’t be able to meet myself in the mirror for the rest of the day.”

Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a novella in Warner’s point of view where we see what’s going on in his mind after Juliette shot him. We get to meet Warner’s dad who is the real monster in the family.
We see Warner’s true and deep feelings for Juliette.

Characters ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
There’s not one character in this story more interesting than Warner.
After the first book “Shatter me” it’s obvious that Tahereh Mafi wants to make Warner the villain of the story. But he is so much more and I love that about him.
He is my absolute favorite ♥️
He is intelligent, strong and supportive. He’s sad and hates the world he lives in.
He sees that is wrong. That the reestablishment isn’t doing a good job.
He can’t to anything about it.
But still he tries to do little good things, kind things for people.

Writing style ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love Tahereh Mafis writing style so much. Especially in this book where we see Juliette’s notebook in the time when she was in the Asylum. Where we see Warner’s thoughts and feelings so openly presented.

I’m sorry I misunderstood you, Warner. I’m sorry that I thought you were a monster. And I‘m so sorry for not realizing that there is always a reason behind every action and of course, you had your own reasons for your actions.

This novella might not make me completely team Warner (because I’m team no one at this moment.) but it made me understand him much better and I might like him a little bit more now.

UPDATE! FUCKINGAWESOME UPDATE!♥
http://shelf-life.ew.com/2012/10/05/t...
Official BOOK TRAILER and an excerpt of this book.^
Lets just say, I died after watching the trailer. Like.seriously. <.<
My reaction: OMG OMG OMG! DYYIINNG, DYYYYIIINNG! EEEE! AAAHH! OMG! ♥__♥
Warner is good, not great, and love when the soldiers and all are there. It just looks so real. I want the freaking movie. :(

Me right now.^
Oh. Lord. I think I am in Heaven.
My mind is still processing what I have just read.
After reading this book, all I could think was,
"Hell yeah! Team Adam bitches, Warner is gonna blow you awaayy with this shit!"
Its like, I can't even write what I am feeling right now. So many emotions at once. All jumbled up. AAHH!

I was always Team Warner, from the beginning of 'Shatter Me', and I was expecting so much from this book. And I am so happy right now. Tahereh Mafi just proved how much amazing is she. The way she wrote Warner's POV, I can't even- *crys*-well not literally but still. Her writing was beyond epic in this one. This author just NAILED it. You deserve a standing ovation girl!

Talking about the book, Destroy Me shows the side of Warner, you have never seen before and everybody will be taken by surprise in the end. His feelings about Juliette are so intense. Lets just say, my mind was literally screaming and it just makes me Team Warner more. You feel sorry for him and in the end, I was like, "Go boy, get your girl from Adam! You deserve more here!"

Some scenes which I loved:
(1) Him dreaming about Juliette.
(2) When he is reading from her diary.
(3) Dreaming about Juliette again.
(4) Playing with the dog.

Best line:

"That this girl would know exactly how to shatter me."

^^
I loved loved loved this book, 5/5 stars. I am dying, literally, to read Unravel Me. Excited. Period.
Au revoir, My fellow Warner lovers! :D
