NOVELLA

Gray Leigh knows a hundred ways to stop someone’s heart from beating, but has no idea what lies inside her own. Born a Hunter, she has spent her entire life honing herself into a weapon against Leeches, superhuman beings who feed off the pain and misery of humankind.

One rainy afternoon, the Clan Council assigns Gray to protect Simon Romero, a human biologist whose research has uncovered the existence of Leeches. As they face Leech assassins and a psychotic ex-Hunter, Simon grapples to fathom this new, violent world into which he’s been plunged. Meanwhile, Gray struggles to reconcile Simon’s kindness and pacifism with her own ascetic warrior’s life.

As the day passes into another, Gray finds herself increasingly determined to keep Simon safe, not only because it is her duty, but because she has finally found something that means as much to her as killing.

Elle Hill

Born in Idaho during the height of disco, Elle Hill now pens novels while rocking out to Donna Summer and KC and the Sunshine Band. She worked in Idaho for several years as a secretary and journalist before moving to California and selling her soul to academia. After receiving her PhD in Sociology, Elle Hill became a not-so-mild-mannered college instructor by night and a community activist during the remainder of her waking hours. Always a journalist and writer at heart, one of her favorite pastimes includes publishing satires on the political state of the world; some of her thoughts are posted on her blog at ellehillauthor.blogspot.com/.

Finally, Elle urges everyone to become a superhero and adopt their next non-human companion from a local animal shelter.

This is a real tease because it's so short, but a great way to introduce a new UF world. Leeches sound suitably digusting, the psycho was hilarious - I loved her and, as a bit of a geeky scientist myself, I was delighted to see us represented in a much cooler light. I'm off to find the next one :)

Oh and for a limited time only you can win this e-book @: http://pippajay.blogspot.com/2011/10/...

Now is that a good tip or what??

The good: I love the author's skilful character descriptions, and the way she manages to convey the details of this underlying paranormal world that most humans aren't aware beneath the real one they know without it being an info dump. The bedroom scene is hot without dominating the story as some books do. The story goes straight into the action, and frankly ended far sooner than I would have liked.

The bad: I really can't find much to complain about. Personally I would have liked a little more of the story from Dr.Romero's viewpoint, as he's as much a newcomer to the world of Hunters and Psychic versus Leeches as the reader.

In sum: I would recommend this to fans of paranormal romance in general, but especially those who might be looking for something new without shifters, vamps and witches. I don't normally read paranormal or urban fantasy, but the story and the writing held me.

This is the first romance I've read (unless you count Wuthering Heights). It's a fast-paced rollercoaster ride of a story. I think it would appeal, not simply to romance readers, but to women who would like to read romances but are put off by the cliched damsels in distress and chick flick vibe associated with the genre. This book, in other words, would attract women who like both action movies and romances. There is not a lot of literature or media that addresses this, I suspect, rather large group. Action movies, science fiction and fantasy tend to be marketed to a male audience, while romances have a reputation for being stereotypically girly. But readers don't fit into those neat gendered categories, and this story acknowledges that and balances well-written action sequences with increasing romantic tension between the characters. Nice job, Elle Hill!

A fantastic short story, this doesn't take long to read. Elle Hill throws the reader into the middle of the fray between the Hunters and the Leeches, and doesn't mince her words in helping the reader to understand the new concepts she introduces. The characters of Gray Leigh and Simon Romero are crafted with ease, giving us a good sense of who they are and where they come from.

I really enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading more from this series.
