John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency where he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting.

After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years.

John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series.

He currently lives in a suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

The Icebound Land (Ranger's Apprentice #3), John Flanagan
The Icebound Land is the third book in the Ranger's Apprentice book series written by Australian author John Flanagan. The book was released on 30 November 2005 in Australia. Will, the main character, is captured by the Skandians along with his friend, Evanlyn, in a big war in the previous book. The capturer, the Jarl Erak, takes them in as slaves. Meanwhile, Will's mentor, Halt, has sworn to save him from the Skandians, but the Ranger Corps forces him to stay back. Halt, however, is so desperate, he insults the King of his country, Araluen. The King and Halt are good friends, so in Halt's trial, the King takes pity on Halt. Instead of the normal punishment, which is to ban the defendant from the Araluen borders forever, he banishes Halt from the borders only for one year. Halt is banished from the Ranger Corps until the punishment is lifted, that is just a minor problem for Halt. He then sets out to find his apprentice once more. Halt is determined to get to Skandia quickly, so he takes the quickest route: Gallica. There he meets Will's old friend, Horace. Horace is Will's childhood friend, and just like Will, Horace is an orphan. In Gallica, Horace and Halt tried to go as fast as they could, but they were stopped by a lot of inexperienced knights. Horace, being a warrior apprentice, takes on the fake name "The Oakleaf Knight". Horace beats all of them with ease without his grizzled companion, Halt, to step in. Horace's reputation grows until he is noticed throughout Gallica, which attracts the horrible knight, Deparnieux of Castle Montsombre. Deparnieux soon captures Horace and Halt.

It's getting kind of repetitive to tag all of these books with "pure awesomeness," but... I mean... HALT. <3 How could that not be pure awesomeness???? Can I like... meet him? Or become his apprentice? My poor baby. Getting himself kicked out of the country and Rangers just so he can go rescue will. <3 <3 <3 (Not a spoiler, since it's in the blurb...)

And then Evanlyn and Will! Will's so sweet and courageous, and Evanlyn is epic. AND HORACE. Okay, so Horace is pretty much my second favorite character (after Halt, of course!). He's the best type of friend to have. And to think he was a bully at the beginning of book 1!!!!

Epic moment:

However, in spite of the awesomeness that is these characters and the plot, there were a few problems that forced me to knock a star. :( The first book had four cuss words, the second two, and then this one... had around 30. O.O Details (words not spelled out): . There was also a few mentions of girls wearing "indecent" skirts (which would actually be long by our standards), and one person says that they "look better that way". Some alcohol involved.

But the main issue with this story was drug abuse. It was actually handled very well and was portrayed in a negative light, but it's still something you should be aware of before reading this.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story, and I'm looking forward to book four!

Yes ~ Yes ~ Yes ~ Yes

Oh. My. Word.

Loved this book, the details, the characters, the scenes, but most importantly the theme... although.... I am VERY sad that Halt "had" to leave the Rangers Corps.

Loved the book and especially Will... who can't love Will? ~ After all there was no reason to be crying ~ Did I cry after that? *nods* Yes, yes I did... WILL..... my poor little friend!! How COULD you get addicted to that - THAT drug!!! *sobs heart out* gotta love my baby....

I think I said everything that needed to be said. Basically if you haven't read the series = PICK IT UP .... because Will.... well you just can't like him...

*goes back to library* Now .... *muses to self* .... Where's the next one?

I know that I've said this a couple of times already but it deserves repeating: I am enjoying this series so much more than I would have ever expected. I've flown through these first three books, and have the fourth book sitting on my bedside table begging to be read. It's completely addictive.

The characters are some of my favourites already. We get to see a new side of all the characters in this sequel. I especially loved getting into Halt's head and seeing him grieving for the loss of his friend. It was also great to see Evanlyn step up towards the end of the book, but I sorely missed Will at times. His wit bought an extra something to the book, and while Halt's teasing of Horace left me in chuckles, it just wasn't the same and Halt and Will's banter.

I do, however, have to say that the plot wasn't as fantastic as The Burning Bridge. The second half of the book dragged a little bit, not too terribly so but noticeably. I am anxious to see where the story is going to progress to in Oakleaf Bearers so I'm going to pick that up as soon as humanly possible. I'm so glad that I picked up this series.

Didn't enjoy it as much as the first 2 books but still liked it. It felt like not as much action happened. There was a lot of character development though.

2.5 stars- it was OK.
As captivating as they were, if the 200+ pages of this book had been summarized into a chapter or two and had been merged with the previous or next installment of the series, I would have liked it much more. But the plot just doesn't deserve a whole book of the series to itself. And I understand that Flanagan was merely giving the readers a chance to identify with Evanlyn, but he didn't have to cut Will out of the action do so. The series is called the Ranger's Apprentice after all, so it should be more about the Ranger's Apprentice. Seeing it from a different perspective, however, The Icebound Land is just a transition to a (hopefully) more intriguing sequel.

A bit different from the previous book, slower paced. This book is more character-driven rather than plot, with two protagonists kidnapped and sold as slaves as the main storyline. It’s more gripping and it all goes down in a really cool setting. The other storyline with the other two protagonists serves as a nice little distraction though.

I think I found another author to add to my list of favorites. John Flanagan really knows how to tell a story!

This book crushed my feels to an unrecognizable mess, made me wheeze with laughter, and parts of it left me gasping because I was so anxious for certain characters safety that I was holding my breath.

But that ending....*cry of relief* Bless the author for not leaving me in panic right before bed.

Evanlyn no cóż.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!!
I read this book in less than a day, which is not really normal for me.(I tend to read slow!) But it's just so fast-paced and absolutely unputdownable. My love and admiration for Halt increased throughout the whole book as I read all the sacrifices he made in order to rescue Will; purposely publicly insulting King Duncan, and hoping the resulting punishment would be banishment, although it could have resulted in death; being expelled from the Ranger Corps and having to hand over his treasured silver oakleaf.....*SOB* aaaahhhh my heart broke for him!; and all those times when he so easily could have left Horace and continued on in his search but he didn't! It speaks volumes about his character. And to see Horace grow so much in his skill as an apprentice knight and to see his relationship with Halt was wonderful! It's amazing what he's willing to do in order to save his friend.
As for Will and Evanlyn's less then pleasant adventures with the Skandians, I can't say I'm very fond of their turn of events. I love seeing how Will kept up his courage (and fitness!) when they were stuck on Skorghijl, and how he didn't stop trying to look for ways to escape. I also loved the part where he threw the knife at the keg representing Slagor's head! I could have cried reading about his addiction to warmweed; to see Will, a boy who's so bright, optimistic, and talented be reduced to someone described in the book as 'a shambling, mindless figure' was just terrible to read. That was when my love appreciation for Evanlyn soared to a whole new level. Being raised a princess, there's no way she'd ever endured anything close to what she endured taking care of Will. Not only was she brave enough to trust Erak's escape plan, she managed to get him out of the barracks, find the cabin while enduring the blizzardy weather and letting Will ride the pack pony while she pushed a trail through the waist-deep snow, and finally wean Will off of the evil drug. Which brings me to my favorite part in the book, and probably one of my favorite moments of the entire series; When Will wakes up and is no longer addicted to the warmweed. I got so teary eyed, I must have reread those pages 5 or 6 times! *sniffle* I was just so happy and relieved.
I supposed I should end this review, I could talk about these books forever! This is my fifth time reading through the series, and the books are just as wonderful as the first time I laid eyes on them. To sum this review up: The IceBound Land = Massive Success!!

This as another solid fantasy adventure to add to the series. In this installment Will and Evanlyn have been taken by the Skandian Jarl Weak back to his homeland to be sold as slaves. Halt, unwilling to let Will disappear forever, leaves behind the Rangers to go after his young apprentice with Horace as his companion.

Horace and Halt were a fun team, although not as entertaining as Halt and Will often are. Their adventures and dedication to Will were a nice touch to the story and we got to see quite a bit of development in both of them.

Will is not truly here for a large portion of the book, which is unfortunate because he's a lot of fun. We do get to see Evanlyn take charge more though. She's definitely a strong woman and adds a lot to the story. Their interactions with Erak were a nice touch. I'm wondering what will happen there in the future.

The ending was fairly satisfactory, but definitely left a lot open. I'm excited to pick up the next installment and continue on with this story. Ten years ago I would have been completely obsessed with this and even now I find it very enjoyable.

A darker addition to the RA world that really shows depth and the growing of characters. Not as many funny or light moments as the other books but the weightiness enriches the whole series. Evanlyn has a marvelous character arc and seeing her grow was very satisfying.

Violence/Substance Abuse
Yes, addiction is a big theme in this book. Parents of course should ultimately decide what is best for their kids, but I wouldn't shy away from this book just because of that as it shows the very dark consequences of addictive substances (whether drugs, alcohol or pornography). There is also an evil overlord that is a merciless killer. With those in mind, I would recommend the age group as teens and up.

Language
There are about 20 instances of mild profanity (damn and hell). <--To be fair, John Flanagan is Australian and they have a different idea of what constitutes swearing

And I continue my reading of the Ranger's Apprentice series. I'm pretty sure this one was the last book I had read during my first go at the series.
The story took a bit of a darker turn in this book but exciting nonetheless.
I found it interesting how the author turned more and more away from a single POV story during this book. There were always some chapters from different POVs but mostly the story was told from Will's POV. In this book that became even less (I'm not gonna tell you why because that would be an evil spoiler ^^). We learn more about Halt and Horace, Evenlyn and even the king. We also learn a lot more about the world this story is set in.
All in all a worthy continuation.

This book was so captivating I read it in two days. The third in John Flanagan's 'Ranger's Apprentice' series 'Icebound Land' takes up where 'Burning Bridge' left off in a cliffhanger ending and follows Halt and Horace as they travel to Skandia to rescue Will and the princess. Well to say the least I absolutely loved this book. So exciting and fast paced and vivid and funny and oh man I just LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to read the next few and move on to John's 'Brotherband Chronicles"

While I really liked this book, I didn't love it. Certain parts of this book just didn't work for me. Without to much of a spoiler I did not like the way Wills story unfolded. I was glad when it finally resolved itself . That is a me problem rather than a problem with the book.
What I loved was Halts and Horus story. They really are compelling characters and they really work well together. I cannot wait to see how this story unfolds.
If you are looking for a new series I high recommend this one.

To chyba będzie moja ulubiona seria.

No ta część póki co najmniej przypadła mi do gustu.

I thought it was rather bad. And the only reason for me still continuing to read this series is because I promised my little brother (which was a mistake)..

Throughout the whole book, almost nothing happens. You got the story line of Halt and Horace, who go through Gallica while defeating some not-so-chivalrous knights. And the other story line is of Evelyn and Will who get kidnapped, get sold as slaves and after that manage to escape. There is no real pace in the book and the events that do happen are only minor and boring.

Something that is really ruining it for me are the characters. All the main characters are portrayed as saints, there is essentially nothing wrong with them. Evelyn and Will get constantly praised for being brave, Horace for being humble (which is near impossible, because he is a 14 year old who is a natural in fighting and has already done amazing things) and at last Halt for being good at archery. Well, congratulations John Flanagan, for forming perfect characters!

Sorry if this comes over as a bit harsh, but I'm just a little negative over this book. I don't really look forward to reading the next one but still hope it will be at least better than this one.
