As both the scriptures and modern-day prophets have taught, this life is the time for us "to prepare to meet God" (Alma 34:32). Beyond that, each day of this life offers opportunities to decide how we want to live both now and for eternity. In this concise, approachable book, President Russell M. Nelson shares crucial teaching with the rising generation about making choices now that will lead to true and lasting joy. Sure to instill confidence and inspire faith, this message from a beloved prophet will help you and young adults boldy progress on the path the Lord has in store for them. As President Nelson declares, "This is a singular time in your life. There won't be another quite like it. You are establishing priorities and patterns that will dramatically affect not just your mortal life but also your eternal life." Now is the time!
Russell Marion Nelson is the 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Prior to his service as head of the Church, President Nelson served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He is also a retired American physician and cardiothoracic surgeon.
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nelson received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Utah (1945, 1947). He is a member of honorary scholastic societies Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He served his residency in surgery at Mass. General Hosptial in Boston and at the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1954. Shortly after medical school, he began working with the team of doctors which created the first heart-lung machine. In 1951, the machine was used in the first open-heart operation on a human being. Four years later, Nelson was the first doctor in Utah to perform successful open-heart surgery using a heart-lung machine.
Nelson served a two-year term of medical duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, being stationed in Korea, Japan, and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Later he worked for a year at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Nelson returned to Salt Lake City in 1955 and was initially on the academic staff of the College of Medicine at the University of Utah, where in November of that year he performed the first cardiac operation in Utah utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass. That operation was performed at the Salt Lake General Hospital (SLGH) on an adult with an atrial septa defect.
In March 1956, Nelson performed the first successful pediatric cardiac operation at the SLGH, a total repair of tetralogy of Fallot in a four-year-old girl. In 1959, he joined the staff of the Salt Lake Clinic, became associated with the LDS Hospital, and continued to make major contributions to the development of the thoracic specialty both in the clinical sciences and as the second director of the residency program.
Nelson's surgical volume was sufficiently large that it was a critical component of the residents' experience. He was an innovative and facile surgeon responsible for many improvements in cardiac operations. He also established a research laboratory at LDS Hospital.
By the late 1960s, Nelson's experience with artificial aortic valve implantation was such that he was able to report a large series of patients with an exceptionally low operative mortality.
In a unique combination of spiritual and professional obligations, Nelson performed heart surgery on LDS Church president Spencer W. Kimball.
‘…this life really is the time when you get to decide what kind of life you want to live forever.’
I was so excited to get my hands on this book. It’s geared toward the youth, and the rising generation but I was able to take so much insight from this one and apply it to myself.
I know I’m not young, but I’m always learning. I’m a big believer in redemptions and second chances. I believe it because I’ve lived it. One of the most important things I’ve learned when life gets hard and I can’t see where I’m headed is to start where you are. Where you are is your starting point. You don’t have to backtrack, climb a mountain or walk back to where you began.
Start where you are.
If you’re not sure where you are-this book would be a great place to figure that out♥️
‘You are establishing priorities and patterns that will dramatically affect not just your mortal life but also your eternal life.’
Learning that all of our choices have consequences: good, hard, personal, far-reaching, short-term, long-term, etc is so imperative. I loved the upbeat manner of this book and found it incredibly motivating.
I also loved the sections on self worth.
‘The way you think about who you really are affects almost every decision you will ever make.’
This book is short and to the point. I loved the formatting. There are full color pages with highlighted phrases along with longer explanations throughout the book full of direction and advice.
If you have kids, nieces/nephews and/or friends who are moving into years where choices become vital-or are looking for direction this book would be great for them.
I also recommend this book for any age looking for some spiritual motivation and inspiration.
I have a feeling that this book will find its way into both of my kids’ Christmas stockings this Christmas season!
Thank you to @deseretbook for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

The message was beautiful from President Nelson. I think that it was one of his more recent general conference talks about remembering you are a child of God, the gathering of Israel , and the importance of cultivating and strengthening your testimony. The reason for the 4stars is more with the format of the book. There were boxes and whole pages with quotes from within the talk that were a repeat of what I had just read or was about to read. The way the quoting was done was rather distracting and frustrated me a little but other than that the book was fine and the size of the book was small and cute. :)
Wonderful, comforting, thought provoking, promising, and a call to action. A message for the youth/rising generation, but a perfect message to all. This talk to book format is so beautiful and well done with quotes bolded and highlighted for you. I want all my YW in my neighborhood to own one and look at it often.
I love the guidance and wisdom of our Prophet. I love reading his words. The peace it gives me to focus on his questions is irreplaceable. Especially through trials. “Now, may I invite you to consider a few questions? Do you want to feel peace about concerns that presently plague you? Do you want to know Jesus Christ better? Do you want to learn how His divine power can heal your wounds and weaknesses? Do you want to experience the sweet, soothing power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ working in your life?”

This is a good resource for anyone, but especially for the youth. I read it with my son. It has some pages with just quotes on them. A couple that stood out to me are "Mortal lifetime is hardly a nanosecond compared with eternity". "Jesus Christ is the only enduring source of hope, peace, and joy for you."
a very quick read, yet a worthwhile one! this book is essentially the entirety of president nelson’s young adult devotional from 2022. the message, however, is rather urgent and necessary for all young adults who desire a deeper connection to their spirituality. the principles in this book are both essential and vastly important to the demographic president nelson is speaking to.
Millions of books containing billions of words are available for our reading. But these words of a living prophet of the living God trump all of them. These precepts are the core of the most relevant message for our time. If we don't put them first, we will be disappointed.
This little booklet is full of truth and prophetic guidance that will allow any follower of Christ to remember their true identity and decide what kind of life they want to live and person they want to become in eternity. I know Russell M. Nelson is a living Prophet!
On point and useful counsel from President Nelson. He addresses many truths about self-identity and self-worth. Gold in the hands of youth. Encourage your young ones to read it and talk with them afterwards.
I feel this is a wonderful book to read in a time of crisis to find peace, guidance, and truth. I can’t say I’m in that place now, but I feel this will come in handy in my future years and as I share it with my peers.
A quick read and oh so good. (Like really quick. I think it was 16 pages on Kindle.) It was exactly what I needed and something that I hope to revisit often.
As a random aside, I loved President Nelson’s usage of the term “FOMO”. So good.
*Great book for teens to read! Lots of excellent quotes and easy to read. A good reminder of who we are and what we can become. It’s short which I think is perfect for teens.
