Worldmaker of Yand #1

Yildun: Worldmaker of Yand

Rate this book
On the planet Yand orbiting Yildun, the second star on the tail of Ursa Minor below the Polaris tertiary, lives a peaceful but fierce species of empathic, winged humanoids. Yanara’s worldmaker power is her planet’s last defense against the K’tul, a savage intergalactic invader. But her adolescent daughter’s maiden manifestation of her inherited trait threatens to null Yanara at the worst possible time. Will their world survive? How?

From the Author, What I Like About the Book:
The characters! Yanara, the protagonist, is a kick-a—celestial wizard, funny, witty, surprising. I allowed her to narrate her story, and she allowed me to come along for the wild ride. Her spouses, Mandolen and Frost, are spicy. Their five kids are amazing, one a worldmaker, another a mage, a third a pathfinder, the fourth a future king, and an adopted silverblood. Along with their menagerie of three wolves, a shibal cat, two snowfoxes, a golden eagle, and a lightning dragon (the “lightning” part is essential). Their aerial fighting team, the Furies, their mage team, the Dragoons.
The romance and the paradigm of marriage and family. On Yand, marriage is what you put in your marriage contract. Non-binary, multi-racial families are common.
Themes of profound courage and sacrifice at the brink of genocide are explored by the main plot of war. I drew from personal experiences to describe the war's devastation to the world and its people, and it was painful to write. Cathartic? Yes, to a measure. No, because plenty more awaits to be told—
The world is vivid and exotic, inviting you to dive in and indulge—
The story has extensive dialog and exciting scenes and is brilliantly illustrated by Ms Lily Dormishev.

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun, by Andri E. Elia, is the story of Yanara of Yand, a spellcaster. She is the Worldmaker, the only one of her kind until she gives birth to a daughter. She is tasked with keeping Yand safe from invaders. The story begins with Yanara narrating her life, what she has accomplished, and the people who surround her. Yanara is ranked the Queen and the savior of Yand. Much of the novel is about Yanara’s personal life, her marriage to multiple men and one woman, and wanting to start a family. An interesting focus for a book with humanoids and unimaginable powers. Yanara, alongside her family, saves Yand once again from an army of foreign invaders through the use of spells, telepathy, and her falcon Blackhawk.

This novel has a slow-burn style in the beginning. Elia spends a lot of time on Queen Yand’s back story, explaining how she arrived at the place the novel starts. There are a lot of different character interactions that go into this story and if readers rush through the opening chapters they may miss key information. One element of the story is the polyamorous relationships and the LGBTQ+ relationships. This non-traditional family structure is a key element to this coming-of-age novel. As the story continues, Yanara and Frost start building a relationship. This relationship advances the dialogue and storyline into something meaningful and engaging. The development of their relationship, and of their non-traditional family is an element that readers will enjoy discovering.

The writing style in this new-age book is extraordinary and irregular. The dialogue is written as though you were sitting in on the conversations watching it all unfold. The combination of artistic an writing style and a mysterious landscape will delight readers looking for something new to try.

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun is the narration of the Worldmakers life. Readers of fantasy, action, romance, and other-worldly life with an LGBTQ+ twist will find this fantastic world unforgettable.

This unusual book combines galactic warfare, astrophysics, and ancient wizardry. It highlights Yanara's exceptional abilities, polyamorous relationships, and distinctive family dynamic. With vivid imagination, the plot takes shape, showcasing psychic fights, gory heroes, and an intergenerational drama. This LGBTQ+ fantasy book delivers a memorable, action-packed journey with its unique characters and evocative conversation. Detailed illustrations are a bonus in this book as well.

“I guess doing my wife was enough to put the fear of gods into him.” Captivating and what by all means should be called a classic, Yildun: Worldmaker of Yand, Illustrated by Andri E. Elia is an adventurous fantasy/ sci-fi novel about a fierce female warrior and matriarch, Yanara who literally has the fate of her planet, Yand in her hands. The plot and characters were enough to keep me in a stronghold and what not to say of Elia's creativity; it was a truly mesmerizing read! Yildun: Worldmaker of Yand is the first book in a series of 11 which I am definitely following! I recommend this action-packed socially aware dynamite package to all sci-fi/ fantasy lovers. Fans are guaranteed to love it.

The author’s imagination is freewheeling and boundless, weaving into the mix everything from dragons to unicorns, mages, and even detailed descriptions of the problems of giving birth to a winged baby.

Written like a script, WORLDMAKER has many similarities to a TV series, especially in the tone, the constant action and dialogue, and seems destined for a future visual version. Flying swordfights, alien creatures and landscapes should provide plenty of inspiration for animators or f/x people. For now, though, we’ll just have to use our imaginations.

‘This was to going to be a peaceful day’ – meticulously engaging sci-fi fantasy!’

Florida author Andri E. Elia was born in Cyprus and is both a creative PhD scientist and author, blending science and fantasy quite successfully. Her Worldmaker of Yand series now boasts six novels, YILDUN is Book 1 of the prize-winning set. Elia also writes short stories and poetry. The impressive illustrations are the art of Lily Dormishev.

Written as a space opera with captivating images at the beginning of each chapter that make the writing even more credible, Elia has created a fantasy planet – Yand – where ‘marriage is what you put in your marriage contract. Non-binary, multiracial families are common.’ The principle character is Yanara, a winged humanoid celestial wizard, empath and worldmaker, married to Mandolen and Frost, and they have five children – a worldmaker, a mage, a pathfinder, a future king, and an adopted silverblood! The story flies through intergalactic battles, accompanied by dragons and unicorns, a titillating love story, and themes of ‘profound courage and sacrifice at the brink of genocide.’

The story line soars with Elia’s richly colorful and imaginative writing, introducing concepts that fascinate as well as instruct! Example: “Mandolen,” I mindcalled my wife, “Where are you, love? Have you seen this?” “I’m here, Yanara,” she answered from behind me as she entered the kitchen. She had her swords, Inferno and Eclipse, strapped on her back, and her compact bow, Firebrand, clipped on her left thigh. I stared. “We’ve been summoned?” I asked her.’ So much of the color of this epic space opera is suggested in these early lines – and the momentum just ascends throughout, the perfect mixture of family challenges, ease of conversation, hilarity, suspense, and sci-fi explorations. This book demands cinematic conversion!

My worldmaker trait is not born of magic, but it’s potent. I can change, move, burn, and mangle things, from the mundane to the profound.

In Yildun: Worldmaker of Yand, the first book in Andri E. Elia’s Worldmaker of Yand series, I met Yanara, a powerful and kind-hearted winged humanoid. She is Yand’s last hope against the fierce K’tul invaders. As a celestial wizard and world maker, Yanara has the power to change reality, but her challenges aren’t just physical. Inside, she struggles with emotions like love, duty, and fear, especially as her daughter’s growing powers could weaken her own at the worst possible moment.

Reading this book felt like watching a movie. Elia’s worldbuilding is exceptional, with Yand’s complex societies and non-traditional family dynamics vividly portrayed. Yanara, married to Mandolen and Frost, navigates a polyamorous relationship while leading her planet’s defence.

What makes this novel stand out is the balance between action-packed sequences and the intimate, personal challenges Yanara faces. Whether it’s the intense battle scenes against the K’tul or the emotional weight of Yanara’s relationships, Elia crafts a narrative that pulls readers into both the cosmic and the personal stakes at play.
