I think Naomi Novik purposefully set up the parallels to knock them down later. El is not her mother, and I feel like the scenes in the book where she was about to do something outrageous to save someone she liked, like when Nkoyo was in danger and she almost destroyed the gym, were foreshadowing for whatever crazy thing she might do to save Orion.
At least, I hope so. (less)

Naomi Novik mentioned in an interview that she thought it was going to be two books. But when she wrote drafts of them she realised this book needed to be written to bridge the two, so it turned into a trilogy. I doubt it. However, there are some important questions:
- why does he get mana from killing mals?
- what's his 'mana block' thing that means he has to ask permission to use NY's power sharing thingy?
- his mother is presumably super powerful - does that have anything to do with his oddness?

EDIT 26/11/21 AFTER READING TLG
All of my vague musings are answered in The Last Graduate. Except, possibly, why he gets mana from killing mals. It seems that he just does, it's his affinity, the same as El can do all the crazy powerful spells.

EDIT 2023 AFTER READING THE GOLDEN ENCLAVES
Yup, we now know all of Orion's secrets. Didn't see that coming!(less)

Sarah Novak has said that it was the school testing El.
