30 Books Written by Celebrities Turned Fiction Authors

Typically, when you become an upper-tier celebrity—the kind with global name recognition—that’s the top of the career tree, the end of new job applications. You’re the apex predator of the employment market. You did it.

But some celebrities just won’t quit. In fact, some of them make a go at one of the toughest jobs on the planet: fiction writing.

We’ve gathered below ten legitimate real-deal books written (or cowritten) by top-level, you-know-that-name celebrities. For this collection, we’re aiming for celebrities in the pop culture sense—actors, musicians, or reality-TV stars, say—rather than celebrities in the larger sense of public figure. No former presidents, for example. And we’re sticking to fiction; no autobiography or memoirs.

The books here span multiple genres—mystery, romance, historical fiction—and range in age category.

As a bonus, we’ve added some additional titles to explore below the ten spotlight items. Click on the book cover images for more details, and feel free to add any interesting leads here to your Want to Read shelf.

Tom Hanks is a proper Movie Star—in his long career onscreen, he’s become a kind of ambassador of the American character. So when Hanks writes a book, we should pay attention. Hanks’s novel, his first, unspools across three timelines: 1947, 1970, and the present day. The story follows a war hero who inspires a comic book character, which in turn inspires a giant superhero movie. It’s about how stories are told and how movies are made. Bonus trivia: The novel includes three comic books interspersed throughout the text, also written by Hanks.

As de facto lead singer of the Bangles, Susanna Hoffs was the target of a million teenage crushes in the 1980s. Her debut romantic comedy is also set in the world of music, as fading pop star Jane Start gets what’s left of her mojo back by way of an extended London fling with a sexy Oxford literature professor. This Bird Has Flown is getting remarkably strong reviews, with critics praising Hoffs’ writing chops and her unsinkable lead character. Bonus trivia: Hoffs is married to filmmaker Jay Roach, director of the Austin Powers films.

Legendary Bahamian actor Sidney Poitier wrote exactly one book in his remarkable life, and it’s a good one. Montaro Caine blends mystery with a touch of sci-fi in the story of two mysterious coins that appear to be made from materials not of this Earth. Poitier’s 2013 novel roams from New York City to the Caribbean to Europe, touches on themes of faith and destiny, and dares to ask the big questions: Why are we here? Where are we going? Bonus trivia: Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Legendary funnyman Steve Martin gets serious with this novella about one young woman, two complicated men, and the tragicomic love story that ensues. Mirabelle Buttersfield is a 28-year-old Neiman Marcus clerk who fights off depression by agreeing to (separate) dates with an old rich guy and a young slacker type. Published in 2000, the book was later made into a film beloved by critics and readers alike. Martin conjures a world of modern melancholy and provides a kinda-sorta happy ending. But be aware that the humor here is subtle and dry. Bonus trivia: Martin has written a lot of other books.

Published way back in 1987, actress Carrie Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel is generally acknowledged to be among the very best examples of the celebrity-turned-author phenomenon. Fisher’s book chronicles one year in the life of a young Hollywood actress after she successfully completes drug rehab and hits the restart button on life. Courageous and candid, the novel was a massive hit and ultimately, ironically, made into a movie. Bonus trivia: Postcards from the Edge starts out in the old-fashioned epistolary form, playing out as a series of correspondences. Hence, postcards.

Basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar grew up adoring the Sherlock Holmes novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In 2015, he surprised the world by publishing Mycroft Holmes, a novel featuring Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft, the British civil service, and a mystery set on the island nation of Trinidad. Cowritten with author Anna Waterhouse, the novel was very well received and kick-started an ongoing series of books. Bonus trivia: Abdul-Jabbar is truly NBA royalty—he held the league’s all-time scoring record until earlier this year, when he was surpassed by some joker named LeBron James.

British actor Hugh Laurie made a surprise visit to the mystery-thriller genre in 1996 with The Gun Seller, a kind of comic espionage tale about an ex-military British mercenary with a soft heart and a penchant for trouble. The New York Times review called the book “genuinely witty and sophisticated entertainment” and “Bertie Wooster meets James Bond.” If you’re unclear on that second reference, check out the comedy novels of P.G. Wodehouse (and Laurie’s work on the immortal TV show Jeeves & Wooster). Bonus trivia: Laurie has recorded a couple of blues albums, too.

Subtitled A Novel in Stories, When It Happens to You is the debut book from actress Molly Ringwald, who became incredibly, uncomfortably famous after starring in 1980s films like Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink. The book’s interconnected stories focus mostly on family and relationships, particularly the parent-child dynamic at the heart of the title story. Recommended for fans of Lorrie Moore and Meg Wolitzer, it’s a book for grown-ups by a celebrity who grew up with us. Bonus trivia: When she was just six years old, Ringwald sang on an album of Dixieland music with her father’s jazz band.

Best known for his role as FBI agent Fox Mulder on The X-Files, author and actor David Duchovny has written several novels since achieving celebrity status. His fourth, and generally considered his best, Truly Like Lightning, tells the strange tale of a former Hollywood stuntman, his homesteading Mormon family in the California desert, and a radical change in lifestyle. The book takes a thoughtful and strange approach to big issues like human nature, family dynamics, and environmental trauma. Bonus trivia: Duchovny holds a master’s degree in English literature from Yale University and has published several other books.

The debut novel from pop star and actor Hayley Kiyoko, Girls Like Girls is a contemporary queer romance that follows the fortunes of 17-year-old Coley after her recent relocation to rural Oregon. When Coley meets Sonya, the attraction is immediate, and both sense that they have a chance at real love. But first they’ll have to make a scary leap of faith. Based on Kiyoko’s own song and viral music video, Girls Like Girls is a 21st-century kind of lateral move from a true multimedia artist. Bonus trivia: Kiyoko's fans have lovingly nicknamed her Lesbian Jesus.

Arturo The goons show's Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan were good writers and Peter Ustinov alongside David Niven is one of Britain's best actors-raconteurs. Gerard Depardieu, Guillermo del Toro and multi talented Viggo Mortensen have several books under their belts worth mentioning.
