One thing I would also add is “find your true voice.” Write about things you truly care about, in a way that sounds right to you. Authentic storytelling is what will finally resonate with readers – not with all of them, but with the ones you’re meant to find, and who are meant to find you.(less)

I knew right away that my small town would be in northern Minnesota, where I was born and which still feels to me like ‘home.’ I also quickly decided that my main character would be a very conventional-seeming pillar of the community with an excellent reputation. THE HIDDEN LIFE OF CECILY LARSON -- coming soon!

Hello, everyone, from the sunny, snowy, muddy coast of Maine! I love this time of year here, when the days are just warm enough to create a few puddles in roads and driveways, but a coating of snow remains in the fields and everything refreezes overnight. I’m working on a new novel now that’s partially set in my adopted home state of Maine, but my new novel, THE HIDDEN LIFE OF CECILY LARSON, is se Read more of this blog post »

“Homes should mean something to us humans. They are a basic instinct. A home, with a life that centers only on food and sleep, is not really a home, it's a house. Beauty and graciousness, joy of living, being used in every part, these are the things that make a house a home. (chapter header quote from Popular Home Decorations, 1940)”
