Six hours by road from Reykjavik, the Westfjords is a lonely peninsula that juts into the Denmark Strait. Bolafjall mountain (pictured) offers views to Greenland on clear days. Don't get too excited -- there aren't many clear days.

Raudasandur is a red sand beach that stretches for 10 kilometers. In summer the water is warm (if still bracing) enough to swim.

This geothermal pool features a mountainous backdrop. Bathers enjoy coffee and ice cream as they soak in one of two hot tubs.

Latrabjarg bird cliffs —
Huge numbers of birds roost in Latrabjarg, the biggest bird cliffs in Europe. Puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and razorbills can all be seen.
