Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Undergoes back surgery
Sorokin had surgery to address a back injury this offseason but is not expected to miss any regular-season action, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports Monday.
Sorokin may not feature much, if at all, during the preseason as a result of his back surgery but all signs point to him being on the Opening Night roster versus Utah on Oct. 10. Whether or not he gets the starting nod for that game may depend on both his recovery timeline and how well Semyon Varlamov performs in preseason contests. While Sorokin likely has the edge in terms of being the starter to open the year, his hold on the No. 1 job should probably be considered tenuous at best after a rough finish to 2023-24.

Islanders' Matt Martin: Signs PTO with Islanders
Martin (lower body) signed a professional tryout agreement with the Islanders on Friday, according to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.
Martin has spent 13 of his 15 NHL seasons with the Islanders, including the last six years. He had four goals, four assists and 151 hits in 57 regular-season games with the Islanders last season. He will compete for a spot on the fourth line during training camp.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Hurt in offseason
General manager Lou Lamoriello said Friday that Sorokin suffered an upper-body injury while training during the offseason, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Lamoriello said Sorokin is skating and while he may miss the start of training camp, he has no concerns about the netminder missing any time when the regular season begins. Sorokin struggled at times during the 2023-24 campaign, going 25-19-12 with a 3.01 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Look for a bounce-back season from the 29-year-old.

Islanders' Keith Kinkaid: Named to rookie camp roster
Kinkaid will be on the ice with the Islanders' prospects after being named to the rookie camp roster Thursday and signing a professional tryout agreement, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.
Even if Kinkaid were to land a contract with the Islanders, it would almost certainly be a two-way deal or a minor-league-only contract considering Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin are cemented as the NHL duo heading into the 2024-25 campaign. As such, don't expect Kinkaid to offer much in the way of fantasy value this season.

Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Signs one-year contract
Wahlstrom penned a one-year contract with the Islanders on Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Wahlstrom and the Islanders avoided arbitration, agreeing to the one-year deal. Wahlstrom has been a huge disappointment since he was drafted 11th overall in 2018. He managed to score just a pair of goals and six points in 32 regular-season games in 2023-24, as he was a healthy scratch in 24 consecutive games, before seeing action in the regular-season finale versus Pittsburgh. Wahlstrom is expected to see bottom-six minutes in 2024-25, which will hamper his fantasy value.

Islanders' Dennis Cholowski: Signs one-year deal
Cholowski signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders on Wednesday, per PuckPedia.
Cholowski picked up 31 points in 68 games with AHL Bridgeport last season and didn't see any NHL playing time. The defenseman is likely to receive similar usage in 2024-25, with only third-pairing minutes if he draws into an NHL game.

Holmstrom signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Islanders on Tuesday, per PuckPedia.
Holmstrom and the Islanders were able to work out a deal outside of his qualifying offer, which would have paid him marginally more. That would have been a two-way agreement, but the contract Holmstrom penned instead is a one-way deal, which suggests the team has faith in the winger spending most of the year in the NHL. He produced 25 points over 75 regular-season outings in 2023-24, playing mainly in a middle-six role, though he also shot 20.8 percent, which makes him a candidate for regression.

Islanders' Jesse Pulkkinen: Agrees to entry-level contract
Pulkkinen signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders on Monday.
Pulkkinen notched two goals and eight points in 29 regular-season outings for JYP of Finland's Liiga in 2023-24. The Islanders selected the 19-year-old defender with the No. 54 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He is expected to return to Finland for the 2024-25 campaign.

Islanders' Ruslan Iskhakov: Returning to Russia
Iskhakov signed a contract with CSKA Moscow of the KHL on Wednesday, Ethan Sears of the New York Post reports.
Iskhakov played in one regular-season contest and one playoff game, earning an assist in his only NHL action. The undersized winger has seemingly been surpassed on the organization depth chart, so he'll head home to Russia to play for the first time since 2017-18. The Islanders will retain his NHL rights since he was given a qualifying offer.

Karlstrom signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Islanders on Tuesday, per PuckPedia.
Karlstrom spent last year with AHL Texas on a two-way deal, so it's a slight upgrade that he was able to find a one-way contract for 2024-25. Karlstrom has just one assist over eight career NHL appearances, but he put up 44 points in 72 AHL contests last season, so he may be able to provide some depth scoring if he makes the Islanders' roster out of training camp.

Islanders' Mike Reilly: Signs one-year deal
Reilly inked a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Islanders on Monday, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports.
Reilly was picked up off waivers by the Isles back in late November and went on to play in 59 regular-season contests for the club. The veteran blueliner notched six goals and 18 assists, crossing the 20-point threshold for just the second time in his career. He'll likely remain in a bottom-four role and could be an option for the second power-play unit.

Duclair agreed to terms on a four-year, $14 million contract with the Islanders on Monday.
Duclair split the 2023-24 campaign between the Sharks and the Lightning, logging 73 regular-season games in which he garnered 24 goals and 18 assists, including 12 power-play points. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Duclair is far from a lock to secure top-six minutes, though he should at least have a role with the No. 2 power play. If he can break into the top six and sneak onto the top power-play unit, Duclair could push for the 30-goal threshold.

Islanders' Marcus Gidlof: Value pick at No. 147
Gidlof was the 147th overall pick by the Islanders in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.
It's not a stretch to say that size is an important attribute for most NHL clubs when evaluating goaltenders, and at 6-foot-6, they don't get much bigger than Gidlof. Not only is he massive in the net, but he also plays big. He cuts down angles well and gives opposing shooters very little to aim for. There are some consistency issues to work through, which is commonplace for most young netminders, but Gidlof has a boatload of long-term potential for the Islanders.

Islanders' Jesse Pulkkinen: Upside play for Isles in Round 2
Pulkkinen was the 54th overall pick by the Islanders in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.
On the strength of notable advancements in his offensive game, Pulkkinen, who was passed over in the 2023 Draft, showed enough promise this past season to make himself a second-round selection just a year later. For starters, Pulkkinen is massive. At 6-foot-6, he's not a true bruiser, but is excellent at using his long reach to break up plays. His puck-handling abilities have really improved, and he has the big point shot you often associate with rearguards this size. Set to turn 20 years of age in December, Pulkkinen is nearly two years older than some of the first-year eligible players in this draft, and that has to be taken into consideration, but the fact the Islanders were willing to pull the trigger on him at this stage suggests they're more than content at where is development is at heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Islanders' Cole Eiserman: Slips all the way to 20th
Eiserman was the 20th overall pick by the Islanders at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.
Eiserman is one of the best scorers in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, maybe even the best. And he's definitely the top power-play threat in this class. The guy scores with ease and without warning, from every area of the ice -- he scored more than a goal-per-game (127 in 119 games) in the US National Development Team Program (NDTP). The rest of Eiserman's game is the question, and it's why he dropped from the top of this draft class to 20th. He's a strong skater, but a disappearing defender, and his play away from the puck often looks like it's a chore. Still, he plays hard and with a bit of coaching, Eiserman could be the guy that the Isles PP1 flows through. He doesn't need to drive plays; he simply needs someone to feed him the puck. Worst case, he's a second-line goal scorer. Eiserman is off to Boston U in September.
