Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett is an Australian actor and producer, known for her performances in blockbusters like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,“ as well as smaller films like “Elizabeth” (1998), “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013). She is the most Oscar-nominated Australian, having received eight nominations during her over three-decade career. After getting her start in Sydney’s theater scene, Blanchett made her feature film debut with a small role in “Paradise Road” (1997), starring Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. Her first leading role came that same year in the romantic drama “Oscar and Lucinda,” alongside Ralph Fiennes, for which she received critical acclaim. Her mainstream breakthrough came in 1998 with “Elizabeth I,” in which she portrayed the titular Queen of England, and she scored her first Oscar nomination for best actress. Beginning in 2001, Blanchett played elf leader Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which was a massive box office and critical success. 2005 saw Blanchett winning her first Oscar, which was in the supporting actress category for her portrayal as Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator.” This made Blanchett the first actor to win an Oscar for portraying an Oscar-winning actor. In 2007, Blanchett reprised her role as Queen Elizabeth in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and delivered one of her most experimental turns as an incarnation of Bob Dylan in Todd Hayne’s “I’m Not There.” She received Oscar nominations for both performances. 2008 saw more success with Blanchett starring as the villain in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” alongside Brad Pitt. She then returned to theater, becoming a co-CEO of the Sydney Theatre Company alongside her husband, Andrew Upton. From 2012-2014, Blanchett returned to Hollywood to reprise her role in “Lord of the Rings” for its prequel trilogy, “The Hobbit.” In 2013, she played the lead role in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” which garnered widespread acclaim and won her the Oscar for best actress. Blanchett had another breakout performance in 2015 with Haynes’ “Carol,” which earned her yet another Oscar nomination. More recently, she has starred in “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), “Ocean’s 8" (2018), “Nightmare Alley” (2021), “Don’t Look Up” (2021) and “Tár” (2022), which earned her an eighth Oscar nomination.
