In Yellowstone’s midseason finale Sunday, Jamie stuck his neck way out by announcing that the attorney general’s office was seeking to have John removed as governor. Or, as Beth put it to their father, “He has declared war.” Did it look like a war that Jamie could possibly win, what with his sister having proof that he killed biodad Garrett? Read on, and we’ll discuss that and everything else that happened in “A Knife and No Coin.”

‘IT SURPRISES THE HELL OUT OF ME’ | As the episode began, we flashed back to a young John, Rip & Co. delivering Rowdy to the train station. On the way back to the ranch, Rip admitted to his future father-in-law that Beth’s boy toy had said something sexual about Beth. At last, John understood what was going on between Rip and Beth — and had the boy branded as a part of the Yellowstone forevermore. “You will have a home till the day you die,” John said, “or this ranch is no more. Now that is something worth fighting for.”
In the present, whoa! We found Emily and Jimmy waking up at the Four Sixes in Texas, as cute together as ever. Finally, we got a glimpse of these two! Just a glimpse, though; soon, we were off, following Jimmy cowboying. That evening, the twosome continued their adorableness campaign, and… well, I half-expected her to tell him that they were expecting, but she didn’t. Nice to see ’em, anyway. Back at the Yellowstone, the Texas-bound gang loaded up their cattle, and John asked Monica if she’d let Kayce look after the ranch while he was in Helena and Rip was in the Lone Star State. “We can help,” she said, adding, “That’s all you ever had to do you, know — ask.”
‘THESE ARE CALLOUS, CALCULATED ACTIONS’ | Later, John surprised Rainwater and Lynelle by showing up to stand with the chairman against the pipeline through the reservation… at the very same time as Jamie was calling for his father’s impeachment. Before Rainwater’s subsequent speech was over, the news broke of Jamie’s stunt. “It appears you’ve been ambushed,” Rainwater understated. On the road, John advised Clara that this fight would only be won by menace. How does one fight with that? He’d show her, he promised.
At the Dutton house, Beth and Summer’s bickering was interrupted by the latter’s revelation of what Jamie had done — and the fact that the state had voted to move forward with the impeachment tribunal. Later, as the Texas-bound gang packed up, what’s this? The girl who’d asked Carter to dance came by to say goodbye. Too sweet. Equally cute? How forlorn Colby looked after Teeter set off. (She even whispered “I love you” in his ear.) When Rip and Beth said their so longs, she promised to fly out to see him in a week.
‘IT WAS THE PERFECT SPEECH’ | That night, Beth interrupted Jamie and Sarah’s latest tryst and beat him with… was that a brick? He’d either resign, or his sister would hand over the evidence that he’d killed Garrett, she said. But if she turned him in, she’d reveal how many bodies his father had dumped at the train station, he warned. He went on to note that she knew that John was running the Yellowstone into the ground. “The greatest threat to that ranch is our father,” he barked, “so I will remove that threat.” This, said Beth needlessly, means war. (And at last, we got the Beth/Sarah encounter I dunno about you, but I’d been dying for — and that Dawn Olivieri teased.)
As the hour neared its conclusion, news broke that the protected wolves might have been killed on John’s ranch. “It’s a hit piece,” Lynelle summed up. “They smell blood in the water.” Just then, Beth arrived and suggested that the reporters be taken to the train station. What is it, exactly? she asked. Without blinking, John gave her the answer. “Jamie knows about it,” she said. John knew, but… but… Was there any “but”? Yes, as she saw it. Jamie needed to take a trip to the train station. Back at Jamie’s place, he admitted to Sarah that he figured Beth would try to have him killed… and asked if his lover knew anyone who might rub out his sister. She did indeed and would meet with potential killers on his behalf.
The next day, Lloyd called Carter on smiling like he’d spent the night in a girl’s arms. (Had he?) Shortly, Monica pitched Kayce the idea of moving onto the east camp with him looking after the ranch while everyone was away. “Maybe,” she suggested, “this is the way we have both” — the ranch and a future. And in the last moments of the episode… wait, that was the end? Hmm. Anticlimactic, huh? So, what did you think of the midseason finale? Grade it in the poll below, then hit the comments.
Maybe something will actually happen in the second half of the year.
Can they possibly have any more filler in these episodes?
Yes!! Let’s hope so.
Got to say, I’m getting tired of all the other shows even the flashbacks to what happened in the past when they don’t really serve much of a purpose in the present into Yellowstone and there have been way too many filler episodes so fat this season. Last season was quiet but this has become a snooze fest.
The only thing that interested me was Jamie getting the votes for the impeachment and Beth realizing that Jamie was in on a secret that even she didn’t know about. Kind of nice to know that John doesn’t tell her everything. But maybe I’m missing something but either of them to go after each other and potentially succeed at killing the other or even ending up in hospital for something innocuous would surely point the state police after them since one is attorney general and the other is governor. How on earth does it not end disastrously for both of them? As much as Beth hates Jamie, you’ve got to think that she was in agreement with him when he gave his counterargument to her trying to kill him in his own house.
Please let the second half of the season be better than the first and leave all the other shows out of Yellowstone!!!
I think you’re missing the point. It’s not all useless filler. If Sheridan put it in there, there’s a purpose. Something is going to happen with Rip later in the season and the flashbacks will play a major part if the story. (Like the authorities finding Rowdy’s body.)
I understand that they serve a purpose. Showing that RIP is 100% committed to John because John covered up the murder of that guy that RIP killed and they disposed of his body at the train station. When Beth found out that Jamie dumped his fathers body there all the leverage that she thought she had on him is now gone because any attempts she makes to hand him over to the cops also brings the heat down on her husband and father and this has her and John thinking that the next step is to kill Jamie. I get all of that. My point is that those scenes can be tighter. This could have all being covered in the previous episode – it took time away from the present situation. Maybe I am in the minority but I don’t really care about Jimmy or the 6666. I think it is well established that this will be a show and 15 minutes of last nights episode took from the goings on in Yellowstone. That is what I tuned into see.
I REALLY dislike 6666 and think it is a waste of time to show it on Yellowstone. We want the Duttons!
Yes, Jimmy happy personally and professionally at the 6666 is NOT interesting to me at all. Wanted to see more of the Chief and the threat to his leadership than Jimmy. I cannot see Jamie being any more stupid than to give Sarah ammunition against the Dutton’s with a murder for hire plot. All of his valid points about the ranch’s finances and legacy are wiped out with this idiocy. First strike between the sibs wins….
Totally agree! The four 6’s is a snooze fest that I am uninterested in. Jimmy is great and I love the story but I can wait for that series. Taylor Sheridan may have his writing hand in too many fires to complete Yellowstone with the same depth and intriguing storyline as it did in the beginning.
If Sheridan put things in, he might know what HE is doing. But if enough viewers don’t know, then they stop watching. I’m just afraid that the phenomenal success of Y, Sheridan might have let that go to his head and created not one but two prequel series. Stretches himself and writers too thin, and Y suffers.
Agreed. This season has been full of boring filler material that the other seasons just didn’t have. Yawn.
Honestly , compared to past seasons, these past 7 episodes have been disappointing- it’s way less dramatic than previous seasons. Moving really slow
We do not need 6666, and 1923 is kind of a snoozefest. This season has so much filler that it could be an dematology ad. We watch Yellowstone for Rip and Beth, Monica and Kayce and KEVIN COSTNER…and, I guess, Jaime and the cowboys on the ranch. Teeter has to sta on because it will take a hundred more episodes to figure out what the heck she is saying. And PULEEZE, no more country singers stopping in to sing, then being interviewed as the “star” of Yellowstone. Not needed AT ALL.
1923 is much better than Yellowstone. It’s actually interesting. Rip/Beth and Kayce/Monica are the last reasons I watch this show. I can’t stand Beth and Monica. The country music is definitely grating. Jamie going against John is not going to end well for Jamie. As much as I hate Beth, I’d put my money on her succeeding at killing Jamie over him succeeding at killing her. They need to get rid of Sarah, too. And, Jamie’s perpetual need for approval from whoever will give it to him is old.
The trouble with Beth and Jamie both trying to kill each other is that 1.) both will know that’s what the other is going to do (as Jamie has acknowledged); and 2.) if Beth is killed, there’s no way for Jamie to come out if it alive even if Beth doesn’t try to kill him. For Jamie, it’s a lose-lose situation.
Ryan and Abby have gotten to be one of my favorite parts of the show. More Abby please!!
Taylor Sheridan needs to stop spreading himself so thin….Yellowstone’s storylines have suffered. Or let others write the show. Like everyone has said….too much filler. Did we need wasted time at the 6666 tonight? I like those two but they were filler.
Was disappointed that it was the mid season finale, then just plain mad when they spent time on Jimmy’s dang feet and his cows! WHO CARES????? Can they not come up with script for the Duttons to fill the hour?
I feel like I am the only one who likes the filler stuff, I mean, yes, I love to have actual storylines, but I also like seeing the day-to-day little things that serve no plot points but just show us what’s going on around all the characters.
I agree. I don’t see it as filler. It’s just rounding out the characters and storyline. Every minute of the show can’t be a shoot out.
Thank you for saying that. I love every part of Yellowstone. We have seen way more of the day-to-day life of the cowboys this year, with a lot of moody music that I love love love. Separating Colby and Teeter was so sad – they are so cute together. Jimmy at the 6666 was a surprise, and yes the 6666 has something to do with the Yellowstone because Beth wants John to pursue selling beef like the 6666 as opposed to selling cattle to make a lot of money which makes sense. That Jamie knows about the train station and Beth doesn’t really hurts; that was her ace in the hole. Now what? I hate Jamie so much that I hope he doesn’t die but suffers really bad. What a traitor to the family that has given him his cushy life. A lot of cliffhangers in this mid-season finale, my only disappointment is that I have to wait until next summer for more! This show is the opposite of a snoozefest if you are paying attention. And I think 1923 is exciting.
You’re definitely not alone in that. I enjoy every minute of every part of that show. Being born and raised in NYC, I don’t know much about life on a ranch, and I’m really enjoying learning all about it. If a show has interesting characters, characters that I’ve come to love, then I tend to enjoy the filler episodes as well, not to mention I never tire of that gorgeous scenery. Some people just have no patience, or they have low attention spans, and can’t appreciate some of what the show is trying to get across.
Well said. I consider what has been called “filler” to be the very thing that provides the background and color to the individual characters so as to make the plot and action more justifiable.
I was confused by the opening scene of Jimmy at 6666. Not sure why they showed him as he hasn’t been a player this season. Think there could be a bigger story plot/drama with the resv – just tickling the surface there isn’t any fun- love the show but Taylor needs to be laser focused on the evolution of Yellowstone and some great characters already in play, add in the disposable villains – that’s what we love!
Below average. Yellowstone no longer keeps my interest as before. I bought the first four seasons. However, I don’t think I’ll buy season 5, first half. Like all series, the show become boring and redundant. Series will be cancelled because lack of interest and falling viewership.
You’re an idiot if you think viewership is falling or that it will be canceled because *you* disliked the first half of S5. Goodbye and good riddance!
He has his opinion, just like you and me. Can we all say what we think about the show without being criticized for having an opinion?
This season has been relatively boring. The Beth/Sarah showdown wasn’t anything to write home about. The best part of this episode was Jamie telling Beth about the train station because it was the first time that Beth didn’t know who to respond.
I hope the 2nd half of S5 is better
Another terrible episode, more fillers. They wasted 7.5 mins on Jimmy & his dull story, then 2.5 mins on a country song while the cowboys rounding up/loading the cattle. Why?
.
Am done with Beth & her childish antics, Monica & her living arrangement. Rinse and repeat. They never satisfied. I don’t care about Carter either. Why not explore and develop Tate more rather than introducing another male teen?
Lol that you timed the boring stuff! But I tend to agree with ya.
Why did they play a country song? Because Luke Grimes (Kayce) just signed a record contract and released his first country single to radio. I thought it was great that they honored Luke and played his record on the show, showing support. I thought it was great!
Filler for a mid season final is going to leave a lot of fans unhappy. This episode should have been all about ramping up the second half of the season.
I can not get my head around Rip not even acknowledging Carter before he left for Texas. What is the point of Carter being on the show? Kayce is going to run the ranch for a year? Lol The writing is so clunky. Too many storylines that lead nowhere. Jamie has been so over villainized he’s becoming a victim. One person needs to tell Rip what Jamie did to Beth and the trains coming. Beth will never be killed off so its time to move on from Jamie and push the show into completely new ground. Taylor needs to bring in seasoned writers to do it. I love the cast of actors so really hoping things improve.
I always just assumed Beth knew about the train station. So I was surprised that she didn’t given she was there, camera in hand when Jamie arrived to dump off his real father’s body that night. Thought maybe Rip had filled her in about this clean-up ritual. Anyway, think the Jimmy story line will tie into Rip and cowboys arriving at Texas panhandle with cattle stock for about a year, as that’s where Jimmy’s at now. Somewhere in Texas, plus Taylor’s 6666 show might start dropping soon.
I am surprised Beth did not know about the train station. Not because it was kept from her, but because the story had her ambush Jamie at the train station when he was dumping his biological father’s body. How would Beth know to go to the train station to get the goods on Jamie if she didn’t know where it was?
Did Jamie ask her to meet him there (as someone here suggested)? I find that hard to believe. First, I don’t recall that happening, Second, Jamie acted surprised when he found Beth there. Third, why would Jamie intentionally inform Beth that he killed his dad? He knows Beth would only use that against him somehow. Having her ambush Jamie there and then having her not know about the place doesn’t make sense.
Beth claims she didn’t know about the train station. Yet, she was there before Jamie to take pictures of him dunking the body.
Whatever happened to the body they found buried with the Buffalo head on the construction site?
What happened to the kid that was picking up the lug nuts when Highmore l John and the kids mother got shot?
How are the horses showing? Where is the money and the horse from the breedings of Metallic Cat?
Those are some unanswered questions and forgotten story lines.
What about the bomb that Kacey put in the Beck Brothers Jet?
I really should proofread before i hit send. Sorry about the “Highmore I ” and “dunking “should be “carrying”
Can i blame the Android swipe instead of type?
I just assumed Jamie was the one who picked that spot, and told Beth to meet him there.
You didn’t mention that when Jamie was asking his woman about having Beth removed first, she suggested not only Beth but John as well.
Every scene between Kelsey Asbille and Kevin Costner is mesmerizing. I’m not sure what it is about those two, but wow they play well off of each other. Can’t wait to see Beth save the ranch (again) with her money-making idea. I have a feeling it’s going to come at the cost of Rip though. Kelly Reilly for a Best Supporting Actress nom!
I am so tired of country music videos of cowboys being used as filler in this show. It seems like a lazy way to fill three minutes instead of writing dialogue.
Don’t care about Jimmy’s ranch, though I guess they need to promote YET ANOTHER spinoff.
The writer of this show has basically abandoned it in search of more spinoffs. Yellowstone hasn’t been good since season 3. I now record it and zip through the boring parts. And there were many in this episode.
yep, sick of the horses, cows and rodeos with music.
wtf
Jamie told Beth about the train station. She acted like she didn’t know. But she took pictures of Jamie throwing his father over
It’s been a terrific Season 5 thus far. So much is happening and now were are finally getting to see Jimmy again and see how he will fit in once the Yellowstone cattle arrive in Texas.
The soundtrack to this series is one of the best ever. Lainey Wilson is a rising superstar and her music fits Yellowstone like a glove. So does Luke Grimes (Kayce) and his new song.
Can’t wait for the series to pick up again in a few months.
I love this show and really do not what to wait until July to start back up.
John Dutton. Sexy
Sooo, the best parts of this episode:
When jamies booty call says, she’ll go away, and he says, you don’t know my sister, as beth leaves the ring screen and breaks in with a rock and hits him with it;
Teeter saying I love you to Colby;
and
Jimmie and Emily!
I think Taylor is spreading himself thin…i hope this season picks up.
This season so far just not doing it for me. A few good moments, but overall I think the whole “Yellowstone Saga” has run its course. Even the Beth vs Jamie confrontations, like this episode’s brick bashing of the latter, are just more of the same; can one of you just get it over with and kill the other, please ? Please ? And why oh why did we need to see the Jimmy thing again ? Boring then, boring now, so no need to revisit. I respect the feelings of many fans who just love that show, no matter what, but for me, it’s starting to become just one big yawn.
I’m a little late to the party, but I can’t stop thinking about Sarah and her motives toward Jamie. I thought she was working for Market Equities to bring down John Dutton since he stopped their airport project, but the way she easily manipulates Jamie gives me the creeps. Could she have another axe to grind against all of them? Remember, Jamie killed that journalist and supposedly got away with it. And where is his child and the child’s mother? Hopefully, far, far away.
I LOVE SHOW and every person and they make . Now I am watching reruns. am on my couch with gummy bears popcorn and a mug, Cant tejj ,no way .
I hate that the Director allows the volume of talk be so low that you can’t hear what the actors whisper or mumble. This is annoying!
I agree with you. You miss so much when the music or background noise is too loud!
