Yellowstone is being taken to the train station: Paramount Network announced on Friday morning that the Season 5 finale of its smash neo-Western will also be the series’ finale.

TVLine’s Cable Scorecard has been thusly updated.
It was also announced that said swan song will begin airing in November, with an as-yet-untitled spinoff of unknown premise — one quite possibly led by Matthew McConaughey — on track to debut in December on Paramount Network and then stream on Paramount+. (Yellowstone proper famously streams on Peacock, as the result of a long-ago deal brokered with tragically little forethought.)
“The Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale,” 101 Studios CEO David Glasser said of the offshoot. “We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”
In early February, fans heard the first rumblings that, despite the drama roping ratings that are bigger than Montana’s sky, it might be prematurely put out to pasture. In a report published by Deadline, leading man Kevin Costner was alleged to only want to work one week on the eight episodes that comprise the back half of Season 5. The story went on to say that not only had the network turned down Costner’s proposal, it was looking to launch a new iteration of Yellowstone to possibly star McConaughey and air on Paramount+ vs. the linear network.
At the time, Costner’s attorney told Puck News that “the idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is an absolute lie,” and Paramount Network issued a statement saying that while McConaughey “is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner… Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.”
Well, it isn’t.
Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone introduced viewers to Costner’s John Dutton and his dysfunctional family in 2018. Thus far, it has spawned two Paramount+ spinoffs, 1883 and 1923 (which has been renewed for a second season). Also in the works at Paramount+ are Bass Reeves, an 1883 offshoot starring David Oyelowo (Selma) as the legendary lawman, and 6666, set at the centuries-old ranch at which former Yellowstone hand Jimmy (Jefferson White) now works.

goddamn it, my favourite show, hopefully the spin off is as good!!
There’s nothing to say Costner and other current cast members won’t be involved in a spinoff. The existing “Yellowstone” in its current incarnation is ending, also ending Paramount’s obligations to Peacock for streaming. I would bet that has as much to do with it as anything else.
I think this is exactly the reason to kill of the show “Yellowstone”… No more Peacock… Yellowstone 2 will probably have all the characters after John Dutton is killed off.
Costner is the reason why it’s ending. He and the show runner have drama and he wanted to only do a week’s worth of work on the 2nd half of season 2. The rest of the cast is part of the new spinoff
Only unhappy people ruin their own show. I wonder what really happened.
Well, it was announced a couple days ago that Costner is getting a divorce. Maybe that had something to do with it?
Doesn’t make much sense to me for someone to leave a very popular show in the midst of things. Not very professional either!
So true. There’s a lot we don’t know and probably never will know until someone writes a book or does a docu. Lol
It seems judgemental and crass to call a person unprofessional for making a personal decision to shift gears. We don’t know, nor should we, what his personal concerns are. I always use the phrase, “before judging a person consider that you came into their story in the middle. You don’t know what chapter they are in or what led to that chapter being written.”
Thank you. It’s a wonder to me why viewers think they know everything about everything and everybody. They know zero about what is happening behind the scenes and judge someone based on rumors. I have always enjoyed Kevin Costner’s movies and am happy that he chose to do TV for all of us. It’s been a great ride.
Exactly – what a perfect way to put it! Not our business – yes we loved the show, but we should be thankful for getting to watch it and for the spinoffs!
I like Matthew McConahay better then Kevin Costner .
As soon as his personal attorney felt the need to make a statement about an unsubstantiated rumor (or was told to), it gave the story more credence. I do wonder what his actual ask was. Maybe to do all his scenes in two takes or less, or with no rehearsals? My guess is it was something more granular that may have translated to about a week of shooting based on estimations, but I doubt he said that he would literally only shoot for one week. Could be totally wrong though! It’s a mystery.
Costner is definitely a film actor. His TV filmography is thin: a 3-parts mini-series in 2012, an anthology role in 1985, rest are voiceover and guest roles. Film actors makes million$ for a 90-120 minutes feature film, less so for 10 episodes x 45 minutes per year.
His home is in Colorado, filming takes place in Montana, and wife filed for divorce this year.
Factor in Covid requirements affecting filming deadlines, it’s easy to understand Costner would prefer drive to Montana, shoot his lines, drive back home, fix his marriage and become available for any feature film.
I get your point, but Costner was making $1.3 million an episode, so over 11 million a year. His last 5 movies before Yellowstone all tanked, so he wasn’t getting movie offers as frequent.
No surprise here with all the Kevin Costner drama. And from everything I’ve heard he’s always been difficult to work with…so I’m surprised the series lasted this long.
That sucks big time, I love this show….
But I’m sure the spinoff will be just as good if 1883 and 1923 are anything to go by. Maybe they can give 1923 more than 1 more season now, fingers crossed.
1923 already has a season 2 coming up sometime in the future.
Fingers crossed that this is simply maneuvering to get Yellowstone 2.0 onto Paramount Plus without Costner attached, but most of the other cast moving to the new show. Beth, Rip, Kaycee, and Monica have a lot of story left to be told.
I agree. The show could easily continue with the death of Kevin’s character. With his character being older and under so much stress, they could write he has a fatal heart attact or a stroke. Ifhis marital problems were the reason he was asking for the ridiculous shooting schedule, he could have asked for his character to be written off. Don’t k8ll such a great show. It is the only r3ason I watch Paramount since it appwras that Seal Team has also bit the dust.
Seal Team has been renewed for a 7th season.
Whether or not the rumors of Costner’s demands are true, in the grand scheme of things that doesn’t really matter.
The bigger issue is that once a show like this becomes a phenomenon you have to pay EVERYONE.
Taylor Sheridan gets six figures an episode just to have the EP Title, whether he does anything or not. Costner’s making high six figures and an episode and soon all of the core cast will be.
It just makes more fiscal sense to do spinoffs where you pay one star like Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the cast are relative nobodies, or veterans working on a low salary.
Wow!
Not surprised. Maybe now I can catch up as when I couldn’t watch cos they went to regular Paramount. maybe in a few years it’ll be where i can see . Hope Rip gets to go to the next one. Beth too.
Why the hell can’t they just write Kevin Costner out of Yellowstone and continue the series? He is one of the least interesting characters anyway. The series would be really good with a power battle for control of the ranch if Dutton was killed off.
I think so too. Kill off Kevin. He doesn’t want to be there.
Keep all the rest especially RIP. Have a power struggle with him & the Duttons!
Kevin knew at the start Taylor wanted 5-6 seasons he had concepts for.
Like all the other people that leave successful shows because they want to do “something ” else
Succssion 2.0
They can do almost the same show without Kevin but if its a new series instead of Season 6, then Peacock doesn’t keep getting the rights.

I agree. Yellowstone doesn’t need Costner to continue the story! This show was always better with the multi storylines. Shameful that this wonderful series will now be cut short. As the viewers we look forward to new episodes of Taylor’s original show. The spin offs will probably be good but never the Yellowstone 😔.
What I’d really like,e to say about this would be deleted so, Costner, you are a spectacular a#@$%^&*!!
Why is it such a big deal that the show stream on peacock and not paramount plus? Just curious. Reminds of me some Office fans who cries when it moved from Netflix to peacock.
Because… Paramount has been losing out on a HUGE, major, massive draw to its own streaming service? All while rival Peacock benefits.
Ok I gotcha…I was thinking of it from a viewer’s perspective. Thanks for clearing that up.
Well – as a ParamountPlus viewer for years, I had to sign up for Peacock to watch it since I cut the cable when I moved to streaming. Now I can cancel Peacock.
It makes me sad as it is about behind the scenes and not the show itself. They were getting their footing again so rushing to end it definitely seems to be about contracts as if they do move some of of the cast to other shows they can make new deals and have streaming rights and let go of people. Honestly they could kill off a lot of them and go crazy. Beth and Rip I wanted to keep seeing the most and all the bunk house people. The other Duttons I would be fine losing but for a show about generations they don’t have many children to pay it forward
Why the Yellowstone drama now? — Success = money. Streaming rights are on someone’s mind, maybe everyone’s… is Costner being a diva? maybe. is Sheridan being a diva? maybe. Both? who knows?… and– let’s not forget… Costner’s wife just filed for divorce after 18 years. So one thing is for certain— there is current turmoil in Mr. Costner’s life.
But…but…what about Rip?? 😕
If there is truth to the thought that Kevin’s wife is divorcing him because of his work commitments, or related to, I think the people who are pissy about his choices should calm down and gain some perspective. It’s just a TV show. This is his personal life, his real life being affected. Some things are more important.
I just hope they are able to shift the characters we love into the spinoff for the actors who are able to stay.
When it ends, I don’t want weak, no-spine Jamie to kill John; his character irks me.
The last two seasons of Yellowstone have not been that good. In my opinion, Taylor has stretched himself thin with all of his shows.
This!
Correct you are.
Lots of speculation about drama but let us not forget that Sheridan said from the outset that he did not believe a show should outstay it’s welcome and he would end Yellowstone while it was still on a high. The Walking Dead is a great example of a cultural phenomenon that has spun it’s wheels and faded into obscurity because people did not want to let go of their cash cow.
I don’t want weak, no-spine Jamie to kill John.
The last two seasons of Yellowstone have not been like the 1st three. In my opinion, Taylor is stretched thin with way too many shows that he is writing.
Honestly, I actually prefer the prequels to Yellowstone. Not to mention that the majority of the cowboys are already in Texas for at least a year. I read that ET announced that Costner will NOT be returning so his death will probably be off screen.
.
What I want to know is how they can give a return date with the current writer’s strike and so far filming on Yellowstone has not started.
dang, this is a shame! I haven’t watched in a couple seasons but I really enjoyed the show and don’t see why it couldn’t continue with Costner’s character being killed off….
Once again, Kevin Costner let his ego get the way of a good thing! I bet you his ‘masterpiece Western that he’s giving of Yellowstone for’ will be another waterworld! I love it when stars like Costner fall off the the horse career-wise, get back on, and forget how they got there. The Yellowstone universe will probably be better off without him, but I predict he won’t be better off without Yellowstone!
Yellowstone is the best show on TV right now, but like Sheridan says, don’t overstay your welcome. I will enjoy the last of Season 5 and will always remember this show. All of you calling Kevin Costner names mean nothing. You think you know everything about him when you know nothing. I just ask that the new spinoff, or any of the spinoffs, are shown on Paramount and not streaming. A lot of us don’t do streaming; we already pay a fortune for satellite TV and don’t want to pay even more. If it’s streaming only, I won’t watch. In closing, thank you, Kevin Costner, for an enjoyable TV show.
Honestly I didn’t care for the story line of John the Govenor. There were some take-aways but not enough for me. I seriously hope “Beth & Rip” have a place in the spinoff – I love that dynamic. Without that banter, I’m not sure if I’ll care for it. That being said – I enjoy the scenery, mountains, streams, and all that stuff from Montana. 6666 is in TX. If it’s going to be like the episode where Jimmy rode for days with nothing but flatland – I am going to be disappointed.
