Saturday Night Live kicked off its Mother’s Day episode with an assist from musical guest Miley Cyrus, who was joined by the entire cast and their adorable moms. [pmc_inline_gallery]
One by one, the Not Ready for Primetime Players made their way to the stage alongside their mothers, who they were unable to see last Mother’s Day due to lockdown. Cyrus, meanwhile, belted out a soulful rendition of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” a song recorded in 1992 by her godmother, Dolly Parton.
Kate McKinnon and her mom kicked things off with their best impression of Molly Shannon’s Mary Katherine Gallagher. Then came Aidy Bryant’s mom, who used her limited screen time to promote the third and final season of her daughter’s Hulu comedy Shrill.
Kyle Mooney’s mom demanded two Mother’s Day gifts to make up for last year, while Mikey Day’s mom just wanted a hug… from Beck Bennett. Bowen Yang’s mother gave her son a kiss, then immediately washed his face with Purell. And Colin Jost’s mom nearly got her and her son cancelled on live television.
Everyone eventually gathered around Cyrus, who was joined by her own mother, Tish.
The Mother’s Day-themed cold open preceded the arrival of first-time host Elon Musk. During his opening monologue, the Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder revealed he has Asperger syndrome and addressed the controversy surrounding his appearance on the NBC sketch series.

SNL is airing live on YouTube for the first time in international territories, including Brazil.
Enjoy!!! 🇧🇷
Elon Musk was good. The Moms were terrific.
The writers gave Musk some really good material; the Dogecoin interview and the saloon sketch were slyly self-deprecating although I have to admit one of my biggest laughs was the (real) commercial for Lucid, the year’s most brilliant marketing ploy. Miley was outstanding.
I agree!! I didn’t know what to expect with musk!!?? I really enjoyed it!! Miley Is just a great singer so overall great episode!!
She really changed her look didn’t she though 😉?
Ned, LOL! I watched the entire show and kept wondering as it rolled along, “Now is this a commercial or an SNL bit?” (…and I’m still not sure about a lot of them!)
I’ve only seen the cold open and it was amazing!
I thought Miley sounded fantastic and all the mothers were fun, some more than others, but I did not expect to tear up when the cast and their mothers all joined Miley and her mother onstage. Great opening.
The song was written by Dolly Parton and recorded in 1976 for her 1977 album New Harvest First Gathering and it was a top 20 country single. It was her anthem of independence when she ended the last parts of a nearly 10-year partnership with domineering mentor, producer, duet partner, and manager Porter Wagoner to pursue a solo pop career over his objections. She re-recorded it in 1992 for the soundtrack to her film “Straight Talk” and again for the 2003 CD “For God And Country.”
I think Miley needs to record that song!! Excellent! It was a nice tribute to moms, but I kept wishing they’d stop cutting away!
Elon Musk did a very good job on the show. He was better than a lot of other guests. He knew his lines & delivered. Miley was also very good
First time I watched SNL in many years. I enjoyed Elon being the host. I hope it doesn’t take years for me to want to watch this show again.
I hope they’re all vaccinated and tested, cause that looks like a viruses paradise – there’s what, 30 people, with no masks, shouting and breathing in each others spittle….
You do know vaccinated people can still get the virus and also pass it on…..
Got so emotional just by watching it. Kudos to Miley Cyrus.
That was really nice!
