Those savory Reagan family dinners are — eventually — coming to an end.
CBS‘ Blue Bloods will wrap its run with its upcoming 14th season, Deadline reports.
On the bright side? The family/cop drama’s final, 18-episode shift will be spread out across two batches of episodes — 10 airing in Spring 2024 (starting Friday, Feb, 16), and the final eight landing next fall.
Blue Bloods last season averaged 9.4 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down just a tick from its previous averages (9.8 mil/0.8). Out of the 13 dramas that CBS aired during the 2022-23 TV season, it ranked No. 3 in audience (behind only NCIS and FBI) and tied for third in the demo (behind FBI and Fire Country).
“Blue Bloods will forever be a beloved part of CBS’ legacy,” Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment and David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, said in a joint statement. “We’ll be forever grateful to the legendary Leonard Goldberg for developing this signature series and to the amazing cast led by Tom Selleck, who America embraced as family and watched as welcomed guests at the Reagan dinner table. We also sincerely thank the incredible writing and producing teams guided by executive producer Kevin Wade, for years of compelling episodes as they conceive this final chapter that we expect to be the most satisfying season yet for our loyal viewers.”
Added Selleck himself, “For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family. Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes. Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their steadfast support and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night.”
Showrunner Kevin Wade said, “Blue Bloods will leave behind an enduring legacy that was collectively achieved by our extraordinary cast, our talented and tirelessly inventive writers, and the best crew in the business…. We look forward to giving fans an exciting and emotionally satisfying final season, and we are forever grateful for their enthusiasm and loyalty over all these years.”
Surprised they don’t just order 22. Show ten this spring, and the other 12 in the fall. With holidays, the show could air its finale in 2025 haha.
Just feels like 8 is a weird number for filling a timeslot this fall.
8 is the exact number of episodes Blue Bloods aired in the fall of 2022.
That was hardly the point made.
“Blue Bloods”‘ viewers feel cheated, missing out on 4 or 5 episodes with the cut to [only] 18.
An ideal scenario, but now just a pipe dream: half, or almost half, i.e., 11 – 12, that CBS runs post Super Bowl into the spring; then the remaining dozen hours next fall carrying the show into the first two weeks of December when preemptions for holiday programming take over the timeslot. As announced, 8 and done is just a third of a season.
For those with a LONG memories, nothing was said about a retrospective hour, a clip show more-or-less, a la “Knots Landing”‘s celebrated farewell, to precede the final episode.
. . . .
As for “Herb Flynn”‘s astute Comment re “Donny’s ‘NKOTB’ commitment,” “Blue Bloods” long ago mastered the behind-the-scenes art of pre-shooting scripted material to accommodate scheduling conflicts and fluctuating availabilities of its large ensemble.
. . . .
Finally, those ‘farewell’ comments from CBS execs and star Selleck sound so generic, so scripted, as if lifted straight from publicists’ playbooks.
Wish they would not cancel the show it is a very good show.
Please do not cancel
Blue Blood. It is one of the best TV programs on TV period
Even if they wanted to order 20 or 22, they couldn’t – Donny’s committed to an early Summer Start for the next NKOTB tour, and they will just finish shooting the 18 episode right before he had to start rehearsals.
Plus I have a feeling the final 8 is going to be a serialized story arc.
As for a split order – Still this is what they did for the last CBS Network Season on CRIMINAL MINDS – they tacked on 10 episodes to the existing order of 15 and then ran them over 8 weeks the following winter.
I’m surprised they didn’t just fo 23. 10 episode Spring then 13 next fall.
I wonder if they will call both parts ‘The Farewell Season’.
Gah, sad but it’s time. I’ve never missed an episode, love Blue Bloods but I can let it go with a proper ending. That said I’m hating this trend of split final seasons. I know it’s all about money but it’s annoying as a viewer.
I’m pretty sure it has to do with the strike. Otherwise no way they would’ve done it like this.
One of my favourite shows. I wish it didn’t have to end. I will miss it.
I agree this is one of my favorite shows. I’m sad that is going to end. I wish it didn’t have to end.
Well damn… Surprisingly I have never gotten tired of this show, even after 13 seasons. I’ll truly miss it. At least they have plenty of time and episodes left to give it the ending it deserves. Great show.
I agree. I’m going to miss those family dinners that seem from another time.
Thanks for the update. I won’t be watching any of it. Amy leaves a lot to be desired as the woman in charge.
BJ Simms: Who’s Amy??? If you’re referring to Amy Carlson who played Danny’s wife, her character died a few seasons ago. And no female character on the show is or has ever been “the woman in charge.”
I believe he might be referring to Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. She was referenced in the article.
BJ Simms: Are you sure you’re talking about Blue Bloods????
Wow, what a way to start out the holiday week with a gut punch. But they’ve had one helluva good run with this series.
Good….I’ve had enough of those dinner prayers. Linda’s body going to show up. Jamie n jenko getting a baby. Danny becoming commissioner.
I assume you have a remote and are capable of changing the channel or is that giving you too much credit?
Sorry to see the show end, but 14 years is a darn good run! Now maybe Tom can go back to making Jesse Stone movies! 💗🙏🙏🙏
Tom has enough trouble moving around in scenes on BB and even more trouble doing some motion in those reverse mortgage commercials he does. I think he’ll live nicely off his residuals.
That breaks my heart. Only show worth watching anymore.
I am very sad to hear Blue Bloods is ending. Friday nights will not be the same without Blood Bloods. The casts members ere fantastic and amazing actors.
For me it’s Saturday mornings. For many, many years I’ve watched Blue Bloods on Sat a.m. with my morning coffee :-) It’s a tradition.
Me too. It was Hawaii Five-O then Blue Bloods.
YUP!!
Please don’t end Blue Bloods. It’s by far the best show. This is extremely upsetting. As a BB show fan, please reconsider this!!!!
Do we know why Blue Bloods is ending? If Tom Selleck wants to leave, I think the show would still work well without him, even though I would very much miss him. I was really looking forward to Jamie’s rising career, finding out if Danny’s son was going into the police department, following Danny and his partner every week, and seeing more of the other grandson. This, Fire Country, and the original NCIS are my favorite CBS shows. I really really wish CBS would consider a spinoff if Selleck is the reason it is ending, or just reconsider, period, if Selleck is not the reason for the cancellation.
Frankly, it is likely the economics of doing an ensemble show with longtime cast members (like everyone else, they all want and deserve raises). At some point, Blue Bloods became very expensive to produce. If you remember on this board, the cast members came together last year to give some “cost breaks” so they could continue the show.
For me, it was obvious that this was going to be the final season.
When CBS announced cutbacks for season fourteen and then the writers strike, I was waiting for thus announcement.
My only wish is for all four of Frank’s grandchildren to be on screen together.
Every since Joe was introduced, I’ve been wishing for this.
@GraceM: Joe has been underutilized ever since he was introduced. And not having him in the Season 13 finale at the dinner table, and not even a mention of him, was a really big mistake.
Totally agree!!
Blue bloods is one of the best shows on t.vit is family and religious very good .why can’t you renew it.
Although Tom Selleck has some health issues ha has stated more than once that he would be on board for another season after #14 so I don’t believe the cancellation is because of Tom Selleck.
Want to bet it comes back to streaming with new episodes by 2025? Sooner?
It didn’t happen to Hawaii Five-O. Doubt it will happen here.
Not a chance.
The widely reported, prohibitive cost considerations, which impacted what we’ll see this winter and next fall, aren’t going away; aren’t about to get any better.
And even if money wasn’t the issue, the practical considerations of Paramount + rounding up a dozen established performers no longer contractually committed to resuming an episodic series — beloved as it may well be to them [and fans alike] — or available, i.e., they’ve ‘moved on’ with both professional and personal endeavors, will ’86’ that scenario into pipe dream territory.
“Want to bet . . . ?” asks ‘The Rookie.’
The matter-of-fact bookie responds, “Nah; that’s not a bet anyone’s gonna take.”
So sad to hear this. I’ve watched the show since the beginning. I hope they do an episode dedicated to Treat Williams. He played a recurring character that was an old police partner of Commissioner Reagan.
Is Williams still alive? Or, have I confused him with someone else?
Seems weird to be ending in fall. I understand the reasoning but just odd. I wish Young Sheldon could do that. Then you would get a more fully realized ending than 14 episodes.
It’ll give CBS an “event” – My prediction is an 8-episode story arc for The Fall. I’m expecting all lose ends tied up – not saying Frank will retire…but at least they have an end point.
Noooooooooo.
I saw this coming with all of the cancelations that are going on as of late. I’ll definitely miss this show but, again, not surprised. I WONT be shocked if we see the likes of Chicago PD etc to get the axe. Going forward…new TV series no longer have the staying power like they once did. Sign of the times I guess. Welcome to the new world of cable.
Cable has been a thing for 40 years and it’s still new to you?
This is sad news. It’s one of the few shows that I can share with a friend who doesn’t care for the darker things on TV, one of the few family friendly dramas left. And I’m not tired of it or it’s story lines. i’ll miss it.
Please don’t go. We need our Blue Blood. We watch it all day Wednesday on ION. Thank you all for the enjoyment you have given us. Have a great life.
It’ll still be on ION…
Love Blue Blood!! Going to miss this show because it is a great family show of modest and dignity. All the Actors and Actresses are fantastic and I love them all. God Bless you all for a phenomenal performance and dedication to a great family show. Thank goodness for reruns!!!
They should end with a Christmas episode.
@Jason, excellent idea! And all the characters Garret, Abby, Baez, Jackie, Sid, Anthony, Renzulli, Jack, all 4 grandkids, etc (except the mayors), can all come to the Reagan house to celebrate! That would be my perfect send-off.
Sad to see this show end, but if this is the case, could they bring back East New York? That was really coming into its own before it was cancelled based on budget issues.
All good things must come to an end. I hope they give Abigail Hawk a spin-off with her character Baker.
I will miss this awesome show. The Regan family has been a part of my Friday night since the series began. I’m sure Tom Selleck is ready to retire as well as the wonderful actor Len Cariou!! The rest of the cast is fabulous too and will be missed!!!
Bring back the recent cop show that was cancelled to fill this spot
You refer to “East New York”? That boat sailed due to the strikes…no one wanted to pick up a show right before the directors, writers and actor strikes.
I’m so heartbroken! I love this show!
