When Season 21 of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 26 (at 10/9c), Meredith is going to be up to her stethoscope in trouble. You’ll recall that in Season 20’s finale (recapped here), she refused to cave to Catherine’s demand that she hand over her Alzheimer’s research and instead made it public. Quicker than you could call time of death, Mer, Amelia, Teddy and Owen were all given the chop.
“Meredith feels very responsible [for them being pink-slipped],” showrunner Meg Marinis tells TVLine, “especially because one of them is Amelia, who is family to her and went along on this ride with her. But Meredith made a huge decision in walking away from Catherine, and that is definitely going to have huge consequences” going forward.
Has it occurred to Meredith that she could just rally the rest of Grey Sloan’s co-owners and give Catherine the boot? “Given her track record, I’m sure every thought like that is going through Meredith’s head,” Marinis laughs, adding, “Her rivalry with Catherine is one of my favorite things to write. [Ellen Pompeo and Debbie Allen] are both incredible actors and play so well off one another.”
On a lighter note, Mer finally seems to be on the same page with significant other Nick. “She made a big step at the end of last season by kind of agreeing to let him in on all of her drastic life changes,” the EP notes. “He has the ability to also challenge her in ways that previous love interests haven’t done since Derek, so that adds a new dynamic that’s really fun.”

what could ever happen that is so terrible ? Fire Meredith ? Oops, just happened ! They are both series regular. Nothing huge is gonna happen. This is just boring. Like she fired them so many other times.
I liked the firey dynamic between Meredith and Catherine, it’s a unique dynamic for this show. I’m interested to see them continue to go toe to toe for a while especially because it leaves so many others in the balance. Catherine isn’t used to being challenged. I remember when she bought a hospital just to spits Richard. She needs to be knocked down a few pegs!
The one who needs to be brought down is Meredith. Nick should run for the hills.
I’m Team Catherine. She is their boss. Meredith already embarrassed her at the Harper Avery Awards. Catherine told her to shut it down but she did not. Instead, she looped in Amelia and Teddy. The latter used funds to fund Mer’s research and tried to hide it. Catherine had every right to fire all of them for insubordination. Meredith is a wealthy woman. She has the money from the plane crash, insurance money after Derek’s death, money from selling the house Derek built her, and Derek’s money went to her and the kids. She could have funded most if not all of the capital needed to fund the research. But instead, she tapped Teddy to “steal” from the Fox Foundation.
I guess Bailey joins the unemployed after she slaps Catherine. Something totally out of character for Bailey.
Why is Meg Marinis so boring. She’s been in charge for two years and what she thinks is exciting is any other shows most boring episode. Meredith Grey especially is so played out. Her storylines are the worst part of the show and it also seems like Ellen is just phoning it in for her massive paycheck
Newp her love life has been boring since Derek’s death. Could care less about the guys they’ve paired her with. But the clash of the titans between her and Catherine is epic!!
“Her rivalry with Catherine is one of my favorite things to write”
I don’t remember this ever being a thing. Sure they’re both proud and self-determined so they clash, but I don’t recall it being a “rivalry”.
For years now they seem to have forgotten that so many of the original cast members were owners of the hospital. They should have some say and some responsibility in things that have happened. Regarding Meredith, she is so distanced from the rest of the cast and was even in her last full time year. I’m much more interested in other cast members and other stories at this point.
This is literally the most boring storyline Grey’s has had in decades. Who cares about a fight over research data on a hypothetical cure? They have made Catherine a cartoon villian. We need to go back to stories with patients that we care about with interesting medical conditions and cool innovative surgeries and little romance in between.
The one who needs to be brought down is Meredith. Nick should run for the hills.
I’m a true fan. I’ve never got sucked in watching this kind of shows. But this one has given me a new look.about what doctors and nurses go thru and put themselves thru each day. Even tho.the story lines weren’t real some where out.theres someone thats been.in the same situations. It just gave me.a.different look.at doctors and nurses. They are real people and they make mistakes. As far as the story line on.greys maybe wish it.would.focus.on bigger and better plots thats not so guessable. I love it keep.up the good work.
I am glad that they showed how important it is to share such important medical research, and I am HAPPY that Katherine was put in her place.
