The end of Chicago Med‘s Season 9 finale didn’t bode well for Hannah and Ripley… but is their nascent romance already over?
As suspicions turned to Ripley when a beat-up Pawel was brought into the ED and accused the doc of assaulting him, Hannah remained silent. Despite their growing closeness, she did not come to Ripley’s defense, and Ripley left the hospital without a word.
“She was just confused. I mean, let’s be real, Ripley didn’t speak up when they asked him what was going on,” Jessy Schram explains to TVLine. “So I feel like we should put the suspicion on him. I think she was just very confused and didn’t know what to think about it when he walked away so silently.”
When the new season picks up one month after that dramatic ending, the intense situation “could possibly cause complications” for the couple, Schram says, adding that “we’ll see if that’s going somewhere good, or if it’s a little too rocky for them. We’ll see how they affect each other.”
Looking back at Hannah’s storyline with Ripley last season, “I think what I liked about the romantic relationship is we haven’t seen that side of Hannah since Will Halstead, and even then, that was such a different version of Hannah,” Schram shares. “So I’ve really liked, as an actor, getting to know this version of her in a romantic, sober relationship, in a flirtation, in a crush scenario. It does happen to be with someone she works with, so that could get a little tricky sometimes. But Luke [Mitchell] has been a great addition, and I feel like he’s definitely been finding his stamp [with] Ripley, and it’s fun to be able to be his scene partner while he’s doing that.”
With new showrunner Allen MacDonald (Harlan Coben’s Shelter) coming on board next season with fresh ideas, Schram is “excited to get to dig in and challenge myself and bring something really exciting to the show,” the actress says.
“I think we’ll be seeing how Hannah’s sobriety is going,” Schram previews, noting that “when you’re an addict, you’re always an addict, and I think that we’ll see how Hannah keeps things in line the way that she does.”
Viewers can also expect “a lot of really important, interesting, heartbreaking, and exciting women’s storylines for the OB,” Schram shares.
Chicago Med Season 10 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on NBC, where it will as usual lead into Chicago Fire Season 13 and then Chicago P.D. Season 12.
Please let this be the end of the Hannah and Ripley storyline. It was my least favorite part of last season. I did not enjoy seeing Asher be so girly and ditzy because of Ripley. She used to be a much stronger female character.
I think part of the reason I like Hannah so much is that while she is good at what she does personally she’s a mess ie Amelia Shepherd and Gregory House. But the main difference is unlike the other two we haven’t seen any backstory from Hannah we all know she was an addict when she met Will, her mother died giving birth to her and something about not reporting a friend being raped that she clearly felt guilty for. And while those are good points seeing people from her past would add substance. Amelia had two shows of development and House was an icon. I just hope they do not leave those to linger to long.
Very much agree with you. She seems to have this complicated, rich backstory but we barely get to learn about it. We don’t even know how/why she became an addict. A real miss by the writers not to explore this side. Would be great to meet her siblings (I believe she has a sister or brother) or even friends from her past. We met that one addict friend who was giving birth but that was it.
I’m still holding out hope for Hannah and Archer. Their chemistry remains the best to watch. So curious to see what happens in S10 with them.
I like their friendship and hope it stays that way. I think Archer sees her more as a daughter. They are good for one another. I wouldn’t mind seeing her date Sean Archer though.
No way there’s nothing there with Sean. Also he’s not a main cast member.
Was Ben a main cast member? On Fire, Chloe, Donna and Cindy are not main cast members. Sean had a crush on Hannah, Hannah did not feel the same way. They probably won’t go in that direction, but given the age difference, I don’t see them putting Dean and Hannah together either.
Their age difference is no more than Dr. Abrams and his wife Michelle. I see no issue there. And they have the best chemistry on the show. I just love them together and think they have great potential. But to each their own.
I hope the writers do a total reset on this whole Hannah and Ripley storyline. I’d rather just see them as friends. Maybe she can help him come to terms with his past or something. I think he was a good foray into the dating world for her again but I hope they leave it at that. Because their whole courtship felt so cringey to witness. All the cliched conversations and forced romantic scenes, I found it all painful to watch. Especially after what was so thoughtfully being created between Archer and Hannah in the previous season. I hope the new showrunner realizes the better love story exists between Archer and Hannah. It’s much more authentic and intriguing to watch.
You’ve got to be kidding me right?! Eeel watching Archer and Hannah romance each other is like watching Stabler and Jet trying to have a romance or Voight and Haylie or Kim trying to have a romance. Archer and Hannah has a father daughter relationship between you miles while ship Will and Maggie or Sharon together romantically. Hannah and Ripley are made for each other I rather have her romance him than Archer or his son Sean.
Hannah and Ripley might be one of the corniest and most generic pairings I’ve seen on OC. There’s 0 chemistry between them, they were just slapped together because they both have a certain look. The better story is 100% between Dean and Hannah. Always has been.
Vlada, any chance of interviewing the new Med show runner soon? Would love to hear about his vision for the show. Hopefully he sees the magic of the Hannah and Archer ship!! The only thing that keeps me hooked on Med.
