Agatha All Along Boss Explains Why [Spoiler]’s Face Was Never Shown in Episode 1

The following contains spoilers from the first episode of Agatha All Along, now streaming on Disney+ (along with Episode 2).

Disney+’s Agatha All Along premiered Wednesday night with an extended homage to HBO’s Mare of Easttown, in which Kathryn Hahn’s titular sorceress — still trapped in her Agnes of Westview persona — investigated, as a law enforcement officer, the discovery of a woman’s dead body.

The “Jane Doe” was wearing the same sort of hoodie and jeans that Wanda Maximoff had on heading into the WandaVision finale’s final battle, and fingertips that appeared charred from the wielding of magic. Later, Agnes learned that the dirt under the deceased’s nails was from Eastern Europe — where Mount Wundagore, the site of Wanda’s last stand in the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is located. And if there was any doubt left, the toe tag affixed to the corpse bore the name “Wanda Maximoff.”

On cue, Rio, a witch played by Aubrey Plaza, materialized in the autopsy room and urged “Agnes” to break free of the spell placed upon her by a now-dead sorceress. And with that, Agatha All Along was truly set in motion.

Conspicuously — especially when Agnes turned over the dead body found in the woods — we never saw Wanda’s face, when with today’s level of CGI magic, it’d be easy-peasy to paste on MCU vet Elizabeth Olsen‘s punim. Why did Agatha not go that one extra step, to truly “reunite” Agatha and her now-fallen foe?

“You know, that’s a really hard question to answer…,” Agatha All Along executive producer Jac Schaeffer hedges in the TVLine video Q&A above.

The EP, who also directed Episode 1, then says, “It was never the plan to show her face — both stylistically, and because this show isn’t her story.” Rather, the Mare of Easttown-y segment “was really about [how] when the body is turned over, the camera’s on Agatha’s face. That’s really where our attention is, and where the focus of the show is.”

The jury is out, though, on whether Olsen might put in a cameo later in the nine-episode season. Wanda’s portrayer went from saying in September 2022, “I’d love to pop up” on Agatha All Along to a more confident (yet still cryptic), “I think I’ll be back…?” in March 2023, after production on the WandaVision offshoot was well underway.
