It is locatit in the Finland Proper region. The municipality haes a population o 50,966[2] (Februar 28, 2023) an covers an aurie o 2,168.30 square kilometre (837.19 sq mi) o which 181.78 km2 (70.19 sq mi) is watter.[1] The population densitie is 25.66/km2 (66.5/sq mi).

In 1887 Salo offeecially became a mercat toun an, in the beginnin o 1891, an independent municipality.[8] The aurie o the municipality wis initially vera sma, anerlie 0.65 km². In 1932 it grew tae 18 km² when auries frae neighbourin Uskela an Halikko wur annexed tae Salo. Eventually Salo became a toun in 1960. The day its main claim tae notability is as a developin an manufacturin plant for Nokia, an can therefore be considered as the oreeginal hame toun o Nokia phones.
