Critics Consensus

Effectively balancing humor and subtle pathos, Sofia Coppola crafts a moving, melancholy story that serves as a showcase for both Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.

Twiggy H Wow, that was boring.. if you fancy sitting around bored watching two movie characters also being bored, then you might possibly enjoy it.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD recently. It's a very well made film which looks and sound good, but the story is so subtle that it almost passes by unnoticed. Some might conclude that to be a good thing, allowing the viewer to fully immerse in the experience alongside the characters, however the lack of notable events and action caused my attention to wain, and after a while I relegated the film to the background, checking in occasionally to see how it was going while I concentrated on other things. It might have been different in a Cinema with less distractions, but on DVD the film lacks vital magmatism. The most interesting parts of the film for me were those giving insight into Japanese culture. Sadly, the love story never really developed, and was extremely dull and uneventful. I am happy to recommend this film on a technical level, but in my opinion the story is too ordinary to be interesting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Mason M Not much happens, but is still good because of hilarious performance by Bill Murray Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review JD K Wonderful soundtrack, pace, and setting combined with Bill & Scarlett's obvious chemistry puts Lost In Translation in a rare category for me... It's beautiful & never gets old. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review olivia c One of the most real and raw movies I have ever seen, Coppola tells a beautiful tale of simple human connection, unlikely friends, and loneliness. This movie is wonderful and thoughtful from start to finish. Deciding never to watch it would be a mistake. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Cory F Lost in translation about these 2 Americans who meet up in Tokyo Japan. Bob is a struggling actor who comes to Japan to do a whiskey commercial who I feel is struggling on his marriage. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) I personally wish Bill Murray won the oscar over Sean penn although Sean Penn did amazing in mystic river. Charlotte portrayed by Scarlett Johansson is a wife on a trip with her husband (Giovanni Ribisi) One night Bob and Charlotte meet up in a hotel bar and develop this beautiful friendship and help each other through the loneliness of there lives the conversations they have just the chemistry of these 2 characters was the best movie of 2003 my opinion it is a melodramatic masterpiece Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
