More than with most games in recent memory, the release of Elden Ring was like a calendar event in my life. When it dropped two years ago, it felt like there was now a time before Elden Ring and a time after Elden Ring. It was such a big deal that it was my top streamed game like two years in a row, and it might be that way again after my time with the DLC this year. Why? What is it about this game that captivated so many people when all anyone wants to talk about is how damn hard it is? What makes it so compelling as a game, as a story, and as a work of art? Is it actually trying to say anything in particular?
