Got guests? These 15 best sleeper sofas are comfortably dreamy

Distinguishing between the best sleeper sofas and the ones that are just meh isn’t easy. Believe me, I’ve owned two and slept on a bunch.

They can be heavier than traditional couches and some have the jankiest opening mechanisms for converting the darm things into a bed.

On the flip side, they’re truly great to own. Like I said, I have and so have many of my friends and colleagues.

Perfect for home offices that need to do double duty as a guestroom, they also work well for apartments where there is no guestroom or office to speak of. Similarly, if you live in a studio and need to maximize your space, a day bed can solve all your problems.

The question becomes how to find the right one for you. How does one identify the best sleeper sofas and avoid picking one that leaves you with buyer’s remorse?

There are a few things to consider when buying this popular furniture option; mainly fit (opened and closed), comfort level, and how easily it converts into a bed. However, there are some other things to know when furniture shopping online for yours, which we outlined in our sleeper sofas buyer guide below.

SKIP AHEAD: Buyers Guide | Best Sleeper Sofas | How We Tested

Ahead, find the best sleeper sofas based on reviews and our personal shopping recommendations. Whether you fancy a leather sleeper sofa option, sofa beds that pull-out or options suitable for smaller spaces, we laid out the best of the best.

  • Best Overall: Bari Queen Sleeper Sofa

    A light grey couch
    Raymour & Flanigan

    Pros:

    • Stain resistant fabric
    • Sofa has a soft feel while still offering plenty of back support
    • Easy opens into a sleeper
    • Detachable legs

    Cons:

    • Only available in one color

This is by far the most comfortable sleeper sofa that I tested and the easiest to operate. While many sofa beds pull out via the bottom, the Bari Sleeper Sofa is turned down by the middle cushion. Simply pull it towards you and the entire thing seamlessly rotates over into a comfy queen-size bed. It’s hard to describe but very similar to the mechanism some treadmills use to make the deck release from its upright position without slamming down. Speaking of which, the conversion of the couch to the sleeper is quiet, so I think this would also be a great pick for someone who lives somewhere with thin walls.

Besides its responsive design, the Bari has stain-resistant fabric, which is a plus for those with pets or who like to enjoy meals on the couch. It felt as good as a regular bed when I stretched out on it — no sinking or feeling the frame beneath. While it’s a touch more than some other sleepers in our roundup, it’s my personal favorite in terms of feel, design and value. There are cheaper ones that will get the job done for those who have a guest now and then. However, for something that needs to do double duty as a sofa and bed often, this is the one to grab.

  • Best Rated Sleeper Sofa: Novogratz Brittany 81″ Upholstered Futon

    Brown sleeper sofa opened.
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • 3-in-1 split design
    • Can easily be wiped down for cleaning
    • Ribbed tufted detail
    • Foam filled cushions

    Cons:

    • Futon-style sleeper sofa, so doesn’t include a mattress

Where else are you going to find a luxury-like leather sleeper sofa for less than $312? The Novogratz Brittany Upholstered Futon is one of our favorites on this list, namely for its stylish upholstery, ample color options and durable frame construction.

Futons aren’t known for being the most plush day beds but this one has thick, foam-filled cushions which makes it far more pleasant to sit and lay on. Reviewers mention that it’s easy to assemble and comfortable. I also think the 3-in-1 design makes it worth consideration. If you’re sitting with a partner, for example, one half of the sleeper can be placed in recline while the other half stays upright, making it a nice option for couples who don’t fall asleep at the same time.

  • Best with Storage: Article Soma Dawn Sleeper Sectional

    A couch in a room
    Article

    Pros:

    • Can get left-facing, right-facing or with no chaise at all
    • Oversized sectional with lots of storage inside
    • Queen-sized bed folds out and comes with a plush mattress

    Cons:

    • Not great for small spaces
    • (At the time of publication) Only comes in gray and navy blue

When I told Sophie Cannon I was testing sleeper sofas, she was more than happy to add her top pick. She recently moved and like lots of New Yorkers, was low on closet space. (To be honest, Cannon’s apartment doesn’t have any closets).

Article is known for its stylish couches (does anyone remember when the Sven was having a moment?) and the sleeper Cannon chose to review is no exception. She was especially impressed with its customizability and storage.

“Article truly makes a house a home, as they know how to design for both fashion and function,” she said. “The sleeper sofa is the most multi-purpose around, as the main sofa expands into a queen-sized bed, complete with a mattress, and the chaise opens (and stays open with strong hydraulics) to store pillows, blankets and so much more. It’s comfortable to sit and lounge on, and the mattress inside is surprisingly comfortable and supportive. In the chaise section, I can store three pillows, two blankets, and even a suitcase!”

  • Best Comfortable: Burrow Shift Sleeper Sofa

A grey mid-century modern sleeper sofa with over stuffed pillows
    Burrow

    Pros:

    • This is a true queen sofa sleeper
    • Folds out into memory foam couch bed
    • Ships in multiple, easy-to-move modular boxes
    • Really easy to assemble
    • More stylish than most traditional sleeper sofas

    Cons:

    • Crease separates the bed into halves not allowing for one to sleep in the middle
    • Still a bit bulky of a profile

If you refuse to sacrifice style or comfort for the sake of having a sleeper, this pick is for you! We love the clean shapes of Burrow sofas, especially Its Shift Sleeper. Featuring stain-resistant, easy to clean fabric, it’s ideal for busy households where more than a few like to eat on the couch. As a bed? Can’t be beat, especially considering it’s a genuine queen-sized Lyric mattress, complete with cooling memory foam.

We asked Barret Wertz, our Commerce Editorial Director, to test the sofa for review. Since he owns one, it wasn’t a hard assignment. “The hunt for a new sleeper sofa began when I started staying in my mother-in-law’s guestroom multiple nights a week,” he said. “That’s a return-to-office story for another day. Whereas the offer was supportive, the sofa bed she had since the mid-1990s was not.”

    Barret Wertz

After trying to DIY a sleeper sofa that matched his bed at home, Wertz decided to invest in the Shift Sleeper instead. “After shopping for both comfort and aesthetics, I landed on the Burrow Shift Sleeper Sofa and it has been a win-win,” he said. “After sleeping on this for many months now, I can say with all honesty that this is one of the best couch beds I have ever slept on. There are no squeaky springs or coils digging into my back. Only layers of foam designed to cool and support. When it’s unfolded, the first layer is cooling memory foam, followed by therapeutic comfort foam, and supportive core foam as the base.”

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 84 L x 32.5 W x 33.5 H | Pullout dimensions: 80 L x 60 W | Weight capacity: 800| Material: Performance basketweave | Seating capacity: 3 | Warranty: 1 year

  • Best Budget: Mercury Row Perdue 81.5″ Velvet Square Arm Convertible Sleeper

A dark grey couch in a living room.
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • Thicker foam cushions
    • Removable arms
    • Mid-century modern style

    Cons:

    • Non-removable cushions

I think one of the reasons this sleeper is so popular is because it looks expensive while costing a fraction of the price of similar sofas. If you like seating with a lot of bounce it may not be your cup of tea. However, many reviewers say it’s comfortable, and I think if you prefer a firmer couch, it may be the one for you. It doesn’t include a mattress, so don’t expect the sleep experience to be five stars. It will serve for a weekend guest well but if you’re looking for something to function as your actual bed, there are other sleepers better suited for that on our list. With nearly 23,000 reviews, people love it, praising its style and the color options it comes in.

  • Best Twin: Zipcode Design Geraldton Twin 76″ Convertible Sofa

Zipcode Design Geraldton Twin 76" Convertible Sofa
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • Coil spring cushions
    • Included tools
    • Great for those who like an extra firm mattress

    Cons:

    • Minimal color options

If you’re working with a super small space, pick up Zipcode Design’s Geraldton Convertible Sofa. It’s a twin size sleeper sofa, so it’s just the right amount of room for one person, and it’ll add another sleeping option to your tight-knit studio. One reviewer shared that “it’s the most comfortable and well-designed piece of furniture ever!” while another wrote that it was “good quality and sturdy.”

The day bed is available in three colors, has foam-filled cushions, and can also semi-recline for when you want to relax but not pass out.

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 33.5 H X 76 W X 33.9 D | Pullout dimensions: 23 H x 70.5 w x 43.5 D | Weight capacity: 600 pounds| Material: Polyester blend | Seating capacity: 3 | Warranty: 1 year

  • Best Daybed Sleeper Sofa: Kingston Home Carthusia Upholstered Daybed

A grey trundle bed with a twin size mattress
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • Upholstery made of breathable linen
    • Gorgeous tufted back cushion
    • Slats included

    Cons:

    • Must purchase a mattress to go with it

We don’t know if it’s the rounded arms or the nailhead trim that makes us gaga for this daybed-style sleeper. It’s the perfect blend of old world design with a modern twist, and rumor has it that it’s not bad for a nap. Commerce Writer and Content Strategist, Victoria Giardina gives it her approval, and as the original author of this story, I’d tend to believe her.

“A few years ago, my mom purchased a tufted daybed from Wayfair and has been raving about it ever since,” she explained. “As a first-time grandmother, she wanted to transform a spare bedroom into a nursery-guest room hybrid, with this sleeper serving as the ultimate statement piece. Its tufted detail elevates it tenfold and the quality is second to none…It’s not too much of an in-your-face bed, which is why we love it for a guest room or even a living space.”

  • Best Full: Raymour & Flanigan Huxley Full Sleeper Sofa

A grey loveseat with matching throw pillows
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Ideal for smaller rooms or apartments
    • Grey upholstery works with a variety of design aesthetics
    • Sleeper pulls out smoothly
    • Available to arrive fully assembled with in-room delivery
    • Reversible cushions

    Cons:

    • The mattress is on the thinner side

For a comfy sofa that’s perfect for two, turn no further than the Raymour & Flanigan’s Huxley’s Full Sleeper Sofa. By day it’s a cozy loveseat and by night it can be pulled out for yourself or guests. Its cushions are reversible and refillable, so you won’t have to retire the entire sofa if they lose their softness. It won’t be as spacious as a queen but the full-size mattress still works for couples. Truthfully, the mattress itself could be better but it can be easily be switched out for something more supportive. “It’s the perfect piece for a guest room,” one happy reviewer wrote, while another reported it was “very comfortable to sit on.”

  • Best with Mattress: Sloan Sleeper Sofa

    An open sleeper sofa
    Interior Define

    Pros:

    • More than 16 fabric options
    • Size options
    • Thick mattress with memory foam topper

    Cons:

    • $249 flat delivery fee
    • 10-12 week delivery time

Truth be told, velvet isn’t for everyone. However, if you want a couch that’s the centerpiece of your living room, this is it. More important, the sleeper’s mattress? Chef’s kiss! It’s 5.5 inches thick mattress and is topped with memory foam, so you’re not going to feel the frame beneath. Similar to the Bari Queen Sleeper, it’s built for a more comfortable sleep, which makes it worth the investment if you plan to utilize the bed regularly.

Truth be told, even if this sofa wasn’t a sofa bed we’d still want it in our home. It’s hard not to love the plush fabric options, deep seats and modern design. One reviewer called the mattress “insane” and “so comfortable,” while another praised the “fabric, softness and firmness.” Consign and consign!

  • Best Leather Sleeper Sofa: Grant Leather Queen Sofa Sleeper

    A white leather sleeper sofa.
    Raymour & Flanigan

    Pros:

    • Plush back cushions
    • Made with a blend of genuine and PVC leather, making it easier to clean and more affordable than 100% leather sleeper sofas
    • 1.8-pound high-density foam cushions
    • Large enough to feel spacious but works best for a smaller to medium-sized room

    Cons:

    • The hybrid mattress doesn’t feel like a hybrid at all! The pro is that it can be replaced

I love a leather sofa, and this one had some nice design elements that I think would work for folks who want something a little upscale but still traditional. The seater doesn’t have a lot of give but is far more cushy than you’d expect from a couch made of this material. A lot of that has to do with its high-density cushions. The sleeper pulls out like a typical sleeper with the mattress already in place. It’s supposed to be a memory foam mattress but it didn’t conform to my body when I gave it a test. The price is stellar and there’s more than enough room to sprawl out. I’d grab it but would also add a mattress topper for a better night’s rest

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 88 L x 38 W x 40 H | Pullout dimensions: 98 L x 86 W x 36H | Weight capacity: 250 pounds | Seating capacity: 3 | Material: 54% leather/46% PVC | Warranty: Available for 5 year protection plan

  • Best Queen Size: Serta Sabrina 72.6” Queen Convertible Sleeper Sofa

    A queen size sleeper sofa
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • Lots of storage
    • Finger guard protection

    Cons:

    • The fabric is an issue with some reviewers, with some citing its feel, while others have complained it’s lighter in person

If you’re searching for a fun, family-friendly couch with lots of space to snooze on, the Serta Sabrina 72.6 Sleeper Sofa is not a bad pick. Featuring plush cushions and tufted details, it screams, Come stream your favorite shows on me!

There’s storage at the base, which can be used for bedding and blankets, while the cushions have Serta’s Dream Coil Technology for premium support.

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 39.6′ H X 72.6W X 37.6D | Sleeper dimensions:
    60 W x 78 L x 19.7 H | Wall proximity: 10 inches | Weight capacity: 600 pounds | Seat capacity: 3 | Material: 100% polyester: Warranty: 1 year

  • Best Sleeper Sofa for Small Spaces: Zipcode Design Sabine 43″ Armless Sofa Bed

Zipcode Design Sabine 43" Armless Sofa Bed
    Wayfair

    Pros:

    • Removable seat cushions
    • Great for small apartments

    Cons:

    • Shorter seat height, which may not be good for those with knee or joint issues
    • Bed lays on the floor, which may be an issue for some

It’s your armchair but with a twist. More than 1,000 people adore the Zipcode Design Sabine Armless Sofa Bed for its no-frills, match-all look that is sure to pair well with any home aesthetic. Its loveseat charm will add much style to your space, too. It has easy assembly, too, which is always nice because we’re not all handymen, right?

The sleeper is super interesting, folding out similar to a Japanese mattress. You wouldn’t think it’s comfortable but it’s on the thicker side, which is generally a good indication that it’s comfy and supportive. I’d swap out the removable seat cushion, which serves as a pillow, for real ones. Other than that, it’s a low-budget but cute option for those who don’t have space to spare.

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 30.31’H x 43.31W x 27.95’D | Sleeper dimensions: 39.37 W x 76.77 L | Weight capacity: 440 pounds | Seat capacity: 2 | Material: Foam filled polyester | Warranty: 1 year

  • Best Sleeper Sofa with Chaise:Barry 2 Piece Sofa Chaise with Pop-Up Sleeper

A grey sectional with a chaise and accent pillows.
    Raymour & Flanigan

    Pros:

    • Storage in the chaise section of the sofa
    • Firmer feel for those who don’t like “sinking” into couch cushions
    • Includes 4 accent pillows

    Cons:

    • May not be soft enough for some

I’d suggest this sleeper sofa for those who enjoy a firmer couch, such as myself. While the Bari is my favorite and top recommendation for most, I know some don’t mind something on the harder side. The benefit of sofas like this is that they retain their shape and overall look longer. Also, how can you not like something with storage? The two-seat portion of the couch can be pulled forward to expand into a sleeper. It doesn’t use an actual mattress, so this isn’t something I’d want if I frequently had guests who stay for 3 days or more. However, for the typical one-nighter, it gets the job done. Toss bed sheets and a blanket over it and you have a decent-sized bed that could easily fit two people comfortably.

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: L 98 x W: 67″ x H: 36″ | Pullout dimensions: L: 98 x W: 67 x H: 36 | Weight capacity: 300 pounds | Seating capacity: 3 | Material: Polyester | Warranty: Available for 5 year protection plan

  • Best on Amazon: VanAcc Sleeper Sofa

A fuzzy white pullout couch in a living room.
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Sleeper is covered in a high-elasticity, fuzzy material that’s visually fun and soft to the touch
    • Storage inside the chair and on the side of the sofa
    • Smooth opening mechanism that pulls out with one pull

    Cons:

    • Assembly is easy but takes about 1.5 hours

This sleeper sofa will be a hit for fans of the infamous cloud couch. It’s made with boucle fabric, which is great for those with sensitive skin, and has a fuzzy feel that you’ll fall in love with. It’s available in three different shapes and four different colors, so no matter if you like things calm and neutral or vibrant, there’s an option for you. The sleeper doesn’t have a mattress but pulls out into a queen-size seating arrangement that can easily be covered with sheets. More than 1,000 Amazon shoppers have given it a rating!

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 59 D x 84 W x 39 H | Pullout dimensions: n/a | Weight capacity: 450 pounds | Seating capacity: 3 | Material: Boucle, Linen, Sherpa | Warranty: n/a

  • Best Futon Sleeper Sofa: Mainstays Pillow Top Futon

A black futon in a living room
    Walmart

    Pros:

    • Lightweight enough to move alone but sturdy enough to accom
    • Budget-friendly
    • Great reviews on Walmart

    Cons:

    • Tools not included for assembly

Whether you’re looking for something for a dorm room or simply need an inexpensive sleeper, this one should work nicely. Its cushions have extra memory foam for support, so you’ll feel comfortable lounging, watching TV, or napping. It only weighs 82 pounds, so it’s easiest enough to move solo, and when you want to sleep, just push it down and add a blanket.

    Product details: Sofa dimensions: 71.25i L x 33.46 W x 31.49 H | Pullout dimensions: 71.25 L x 41.33 W x 16.92 H | Weight capacity: 600 pounds | Seating capacity: 3 | Material: 100% polyester | Warranty:1 year

How we tested:

Because having multiple pullout couches delivered to my five-floor walkup wasn’t going to happen, I opted for a visit to my local Raymour Flanigan to test a few out, as well as relied on some of my colleagues to review sleeper sofas that they owned.

Other things I looked for included:

  • Comfort-level: No one wants a hard as concrete sofa. For sleepers I couldn’t relax on firsthand, I combed through reviews to see what shoppers had to say. I filtered by words like “comfortable,” ” sleep” and some other related terms to determine if a sofa was worth the money and setup.
  • Ease of opening mechanism: It was important to me to find sleepers that were easy to convert into a bed. No one needs to throw their back out trying to open their couch. Again, filtering my search by certain terms was useful, as well as noting any sofas that had videos or notes on how the sofa bed opened. When I visited the showroom, I eliminated any sofas that required me to use significant elbow grease to convert.
  • Features: Besides being a couch and bed, I looked for other selling points that would make a sleeper sofa worth it. Did it have storage, a charging station or stain-resistant fabric? These are just a few of the things I considered combing through the options.

Buyer’s Guide: How to select the best sleeper sofa

It’s easy to get overwhelmed or excited by the choices of sleeper sofas available, especially when shopping online. I certainly was.

Like with many things, prioritizing is key when narrowing down your search. There is practically a sleeper sofa for every type of person and space, so don’t be afraid to search sleepers with memory foam mattresses or storage. Changes are, you’ll find more than a few.

If you haven’t become that specific yet, here are some things to keep in mind as you browse.

Size

This seems like a no-brainer but you’d be surprised how easy it is to forget this step. In fact, this happened to me with a sleeper sofa I purchased at Raymour & Flanigan a few years back.

To avoid a similar snafu, grab a tape measure and start jotting down numbers. You’ll not only want to know the measurements for the space you’d like to place the sleeper but the width of the entryway to the room, as well as your front door. It’s also important to account for the size of the sofa when it’s pulled out into a bed.

When selecting our picks for this roundup, we made sure to include as many product details as possible, which is how I know that it never hurts to utilize the chat feature most online retailers have available if you have a question. Oddly, there are more than a few brands that don’t list sleeper dimensions, so don’t be afraid to reach out to customer service.

Budget, Shipping Cost, and Warranty

Sleepers greatly vary in price, so narrowing by your specific budget will be helpful. Not surprisingly, the higher quality sleepers tend to cost more (I found between $900-$3,000).

This isn’t to say that there aren’t a few comfy, affordable finds out there. We included a few on our list. However, especially when the mattress is concerned, it comes down to the cliche of getting what you pay for.

Similarly, if you’re working within a strict budget, factor in shipping costs. Some places, such as Wayfair, offer it for free, but this isn’t true for all retailers, and you may find yourself paying an additional $200 or more to have your couch delivered.

Most of the sofas we reviewed and tested came with a warranty, but it’s still smart to read the fine print when it comes to those. Things to ask yourself include:

  • Does this warranty protect against damage during the shipping process?
  • Does the warranty cover the frame, mattress, and opening mechanism?
  • How long is the warranty for?

If you’re seeking extra coverage, there’s generally an option to purchase more protection. However, based on what the warranty covers, you may not deem it necessary.

Delivery and Assembly

Delivery times can vary widely between brands, so don’t forget to see how long you’ll need to wait for your sleeper sofa to arrive. Customizable pieces can take longer, so if you’re in a rush, they may not be the best option.

Additionally, sofa beds, especially those with a traditional mattress, are typically heavier than non-sleeper sofas because of their frame. Unless you’re a superhero, we strongly suggest having extra help delivery day or selecting one that’s available for in-room delivery.

Pay attention to whether a sleeper needs assembly, if it comes with the required tools, or if it’s pre-assembled (the latter is all the more reason to make sure you know the side of your entryways). When it comes to picks that require assembly, combing through reviews can be an excellent way to know whether instructions are easy and if there are any design flaws to be aware of before purchasing.

Durability and Mechanism Quality

Again, this is where reviews are good. Many brands and retailers don’t include much detail about a sleeper sofa’s opening mechanism, so search to see what others have to say about it.

You’ll also want to consider the frame, the materials it’s made of, as well as weight capacity. Additionally, knowing the sofa’s material will help you gauge if it’s good for homes with lots of foot traffic, pets, and other things that are easy to forget during the shopping process.

Mattress Type

Similar to mechanism quality, not all retailers specify the type of mattress that’s included with the sleeper bed. While some experts recommend getting a new mattress all from the start, this may not be necessary.

If available, bookmark mattresses on the thicker end (3-inches and above). This can indicate the mattress is of higher quality and more comfortable.

Another way to get around replacing the mattress without shelling out a lot of money is to add a topper. It will provide an additional layer between the sleeper and the frame, making the entire bed more comfortable.

What’s the difference between a sofa bed and a sleeper?

Before shopping our favorites, here’s the 411 on the different types of sleeper sofas so you’ll know exactly what to pick up:

  • Futons: These type of sleeper sofas transform from your average couch to a flat bed. If you have a smaller space, they’re great for providing guests with the closest thing to a real mattress.
  • Pull-Out Sofas: Uniquely, these sleeper sofas have an actual mattress stored inside. It’s almost like a convertible crib; with the pulling of a handle, it’ll reinvent itself into a new piece of furniture, though they require a bit more space than futons and sofa beds.
  • Sofa Beds: These type of sleeper sofas are similar to futons, but fold down to create a bed without needing a mattress to do so. They’re also super functional, too, as some have storage space at the bottom.

What is the most comfortable sleeper sofa brand?

Similar to mattresses, everyone has a personal preference when it comes to the feel of sleeper sofa beds. While some people like seating that’s plush and cushy, others prefer something more supportive.

Some of our favorite places to shop sofa sleeper brands include:

How much should I spend on a sleeper sofa?

The price of a sleeper sofa can vary widely depending on the maker, fabric type and size.

On the more affordable end of the spectrum, sleeper sofas, like the Novogratz Tallulah Memory Foam Futon, start at $408. Although you may be thinking that an inexpensive sofa wouldn’t have a lot of features, this one does! It can be ordered as a daybed or with an attached ottoman, and is available in six lovely colors.

Going from a sleeper sofa under $1,000 is a great option, not only if you’re on a budget but if your decor aesthetic changes a lot. However, if you want something that will follow you from home to home (or you simply have a high traffic living room), there’s no harm in investing in a high-end model.

We love the sleeper sofas from West Elm and Pottery Barn, many of which are customizable, and start around $1,200. Both are great brands to shop for, especially if you want something more tailored to your needs.

Here at The Post, we’re known for being brutally honest – we clearly label partnership content, and whether we receive anything from affiliate links, so you always know where we stand. We routinely update content to reflect current research and expert advice, provide context (and wit) and ensure our links work. Please note that deals can expire, and all prices are subject to change.
