The Iraq War was a highly controversial conflict in the early 21st century fought by the United States, the United Kingdom, and their allies in the nation of Iraq with the aim of removing Saddam Hussein and his administration from power. The war was launched in March 2003, and within a few months the Iraqi government fell. A short time later, U.S. President George W. Bush declared major combat operations to be over. Nonetheless, the conflict continued for years.

One month after President Bush's declaration, Star Trek fan and United States Army pilot Kevin Howard was killed in combat. (TOS short story: "Make-Believe")
