In the 1980s, Wakefern decided to experiment a warehouse club concept in order to compete with other supermarket chains that did the same thing during that time. Unlike other chains, Price Rite was referred to as a "mini-club". Its logo was the same as Shop Rite's at the time, but here, it was a flatbed cart with stacked squares representing boxes. Due to how small the stores were (since they were opened in some former Shop Rite stores), it hadn't gained popularity from the likes of bigger wholesalers like Price Club and BJ's, and all its locations closed by 1994.

A year after the failure of the Price Club Mini-Club concept, Wakefern decided to reassign the name to a limited-assortment format, to which they emphasized the size and freshness of the perishable departments in comparison to its competition.

Price Rite changed their logo and branding to "Price Rite Marketplace" in 2017. The company said that it wanted to reflect the changes that had been made in the stores since the original Price Rite limited-assortment format was launched in 1995. Accompanying the new logo and name change were updated graphics and signage. Price Rite is still a limited-assortment supermarket; however, the stores carry a larger number of items than many of its limited-assortment discount competition.
