Past Lives

Past Lives

I've wanted to tackle rewatches of some Best Picture nominees, other than Barbie and Oppenheimer, both of which I've seen three times or more. I started with this absolute gem. Not sure why I wanted to make myself cry on my birthday but here we are.

The final fifteen minutes of this movie just shatter me, but in a way that reminds me of the beauty of being alive, of being human. Of having experiences that break you down and re-shape you into something else. The "what if" questions of our lives can be haunting if we let them, but they can also be a universally-binding experience.

This is such a painfully real film to me, and the execution is remarkable for a first-time director.
