Marc was born and raised in the Niagara region, in Ontario Canada. “A Darkness of Demons” his second novel is due to be released in August 2024. His first novel “Chains” was released in 2021; noted as being ‘a perfectly plotted, brutal and moving tale with relentless levels of tension and horror’.

Thanks Kato. This is a great question.

When I was researching extreme fear and pain, I delved deeper into trying to understand Dissociation (due to trauma, when physical escape is not possible, Dissociation is a means of escaping mentally). Dissociation allowed me to ponder upon where the mind escapes, and allowed me to create an alternate reality to the one the Kludde brought its victims mentally, to torture them. There exists the real world, then there is the Kludde’s physical world, and the Kludde’s mental world - and so I created / imagined a mental world where escape is possible. The Beyond is a world outside of the physical, and in a place where the Kludde cannot go. The Beyond is a place where we are all connected.

I remembered reading about the telepathic and extrasensory abilities of primitive peoples. Due to a lack of technology, people were more attuned to these abilities and these connections to nature and to each other. Part of the philosophy in my novel is that we are all connected (through chains) - and that in the end, we will all return to being One.

I originally had a line (it was cut) in my book (after one of the characters dies) - “In life we are lost in a mass of pieces, never whole, never fulfilled, yearning for the other pieces of ourselves that once made us one. It is in death, that we come together again. To return to the collective with new experiences to share, so that all can assimilate, learn and grow.”(less)

What hooked in my mind was the thought of demons out there hunting us. I started by looking up demons from various cultures and there was a great many to choose from - I wanted my story to be unique and based on myth. I chose the Kludde from Dutch folklore. There was just the right amount of information on this monster/demon and I worked in the details with my own into the book. (less)

“Everil could see in the creature’s eyes that it was not used to being challenged. It appeared as if the monster sensed that the
man was not as frightened as he should be. Everil learned long ago that the best way to beat a charging rabid dog was not to run, but instead, rush towards it with ferocious intent.”
M. Todd, Chains

“What is... it?” croaked the Kludde. “Why are you laughing?”
“You are a god,” said Iam between laughs. “Although a trickster and a deceiver, still a small god. A god all the same. Ha, ha.”
“Yessss, and so…”
“If only for a little bit. I made you my bitch.” And Iam spat at the Kludde.”

“People with new ideas, people with the faintest capacity for saying something new, are extremely few in number, extraordinarily so, in fact.”
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

“It's not given to people to judge what's right or wrong. People have eternally been mistaken and will be mistaken, and in nothing more than in what they consider right and wrong.”
Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

“He decided it was human hatred and not divine vengeance that had plunged him into this abyss. He doomed these unknown men to every torment that his inflamed imagination could devise, while still considering that the most frightful were too mild and, above all, too brief for them: torture was followed by death, and death brought, if not repose, at least an insensibility that resembled it.”
Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo

“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven..”
John Milton, Paradise Lost

“Gliding spiderlike, rapidly, close behind Sharon, her body arched backward in a bow with her head almost touching her feet, was Regan, her tongue flicking quickly in and out of her mouth while she hissed sibilantly like a serpent. Sharon stopped then screamed as she felt Regan's tongue snaking out at her ankle.”

Nice to have you as a friend - you have a very good assortments of books read (and on your tbr list). I love seeing what others are reading and sometimes my next read isn't on my tbr list but something someone else is currently reading. Also, I really enjoyed your 'about me' blurb. I've felt that way too at times - 'there are tears'...
