If you havented read the most recent book don't read any further I have a spoiler here....
Was anyone else annoyed when Eragon's real father was reveled as Brom? I liked it when he had to over come what Morzan was and be a better person also liked it when he realized it takes more then createing you to be a father. All this made me like Eragon because I had started to thing he was kinda stupid with the need of a challange (for himself personally saving the world not included). Then they just take it all away with "Oh Morzan really isn't your father your mom was sleeping with another man." Why don't they make Galbatorix his father in the end?!

i liked it being Brom, it made it sad and sweet, in myy opinion, especially when Brom dies and Eragon says that he was like a father to him. IT'S BECAUSE HE WAS i feel like shouting now when i read that part.

ikr?? when i read books again its almost frustrating how the charries don't know but i do. argh!

yeah, but then you can look for things that you could have missed previously, everytime i reread something i always find something new or have a new take on it

but if eragon came to know that galbatroix is his dad then he would probably be devastated and knowing him he would probably have taken some rash decision. plus Brom as his father makes sense and seems realistic whereas galbatroix being eragon's dad would be a good twist but somewhat far-fetched and outlandish.

so how old is Brom then? If Eragon is 17/18 and the fall was 7886-7900 AC and Brom kills Morzan in 7983 AC, taking into account the immortality = a very confused person because a) I haven't read it for a while, and b) I dont know how old Brom was when he became a rider nor the year.

about a hundred years old give or take 15 years i would say.Brom and morzan trained together and were relatively the same age. and morzan was part of the forsworn who were with galb. for the better part of half a century and galbatroix has in total been ruling algaelsia for about 100 years with morzan dead for almost 35-40 years ( as galbatroix went into hibernation for almost 40 years to gain the power of the eldunari after the end of forsworn). Assuming galbatroix as being 15-20 years older than morzan and having ruled for 100 years. it brought galbatroix's age to about 125ish cuz he stole shruikan when he was 17/18 and took some time to gather strength. I know that i went through in a roundabout fashion but i think that was realisticly a better shot at finding brom's age as being around 100 :)

uh, if morzan had been dead for about 35 years while the story was taking place, then how the heck would murtagh be, what, 18?

holy shit abbey you are right. ok so i am gonna take another crack at this. brom had been alive through all of the forsowrn and galbatroix's ruling years so he is definitely 100 years old. now we have to assume that he wasnt born on the same day that galbatroix came to power so i would put his age as being not below 20s but not above 30s. as morzan was considered at his prime and handsome when he made the forsworn. And it was mentioned that he was relatively young when he stole the egg with shruikan in it with galbatroix. but this could be dismissed as many old riders had a completely different yardstick about age as they had lived for centuries and the elves even considered arya young. for the sake of estimation i wont take that into account, now i said brom was a year younger to morzan and assuming morzan as being in his mid thirties brom would also be somewhere there. so adding the 100 years of galbatroix's rule and the 30 or so odd years before that brom would be about 135ish give or take 10-15 years.

so i guess the morzan error has been corrected but these are all estimates but it is fair to assume that brom had lived for more than 100 years. So abbey you have just made brom a good 30 years older than i thought he was, any mistakes now?

Ponder this... Why didn't Brom tell Eragon he was his father when he was dying?? He let out the secret that he was a rider but he held back the big one WHY???

fear of what the knowledge could do? because Paolini came up with the idea after Broms death?

Yeah that's the most likely explanation...

i think this could be because brom didnt want to tell eragon that he was his father. As eragon had always thought of his parents as being rich and famous, nobles or somebody important. Not an old story teller living in some village. Even though Brom was so much more than that he only wanted to tell Eragon what would be necessary for his survival and things that would benefit Eragon. Had he told Eragon about their relationship Eragon would have been far more devastated and at 16 this might have been too much to handle for him.

sorry, i just thought that as Eragon has handled so much surely the truth of his father cant hurt to be added, plus it would get everything that is new to him over and done with so he has fewer distractions in war.

But Brom was training Eragon to be a rider and he may not have wanted Eragon to deviate from his duties. Brom never expected Eragon to witness as many things as Eragon did and Brom was a rather secretive person with a lot of secrets. Eragon didnt handle Brom's death too well so imagine if he had known that was his father he witnessed dying, eragon would have broken down and lost his will.

I think that Brom knew that Eragon would be mad enough that he(Brom) had been a Rider and not told him(Eragon). And that he(E) would have been doubly mad for not having been told about him(B) being his(E) father. So I think he(B) knew that things should be revealed more slowly.
I thought Brom and Morzan were older than Galbatorix. He looked up to Morzan, didn't he? Followed him around everywhere. Also, his dragon didn't hatch for him, he stole it already hatched.

yea that could be a possibilty that Brom was in a way scared of revealing as things could have gotten hairy between the two. Eragon was only 16 and at this point of life relatively unstable and he could have done something stupid so Brom decided to do things slowly lest Eragon know such a huge fact at the wrong moment.
