5.9 Comfort Read, i read Definitly Dead by Charlaine Harris. I consider it a comfort read, because I know all the mian characters (it's book 6) and it balences action with romance and a heroine you can (sort of) relate to. I snuggled up with a nice cup of tea.

I started to read this book when it was first published and didn't like it. I didn't even finish it.
Since it fitted the task I thought I'd give it another try and I liked it much better. I enjoyed the language this time - I think that was the stumbling block before. I find it amazing that Arundhati Roy wrote a Booker prize winning novel 13 years ago and hasn't written another since!

Task: 5.9 Comfort Read

Book: The L-Shaped Room

I chose this book as a comfort read for a variety of reasons. It is one of my Mum's favourite books and she introduced it to me when I was about 16. I have always known that she had got one of my brother's name from a character in it and it turns out that another character in the book has what is my brother's middle name and yet another character has the name of my other brother. I did mention it to mum last night and she said that she hadn't chosen them all from that book but I don't believe her! I was half expecting an Alice to turn up in it!
I remember really enjoying it when I read it as a teenager and followed it by then reading every other book by Lynne Reid Banks that I could get my hands on. It was a comfort read as I was returning to an old favourite but it turned out that I couldn't actually remember it at all and even when I was reading it nothing of the story came back to me. It is a brilliant book and I could really feel the emotions that are evoked throughout it.
It turned out to be even more of a comfort read than I first expected as I loved it so much and didn't remember it well so it was like discovering an old and best friend all over again!
The book is actually a first in a trilogy so I have now managed to fit the next two books into this challenge and am looking forward to reading them! For some reason I only have the first and last book so have ordered the middle book online today.

Petra Congratulations on completing your first Task, Jessica, and welcome to the Challenge!

I completed Task 5.7 (Circle of Life) by reading Next by Michael Crichton, who passed away on Nov. 4th, 2008.

Interesting story of biogenetics-gone-crazy. The Genie has been let out of the bottle and gene manipulation and control and ownership are let loose into Society.
Although not the best written story, this is an interesting look at what can happen when the Law and Scientists and bio-genetic companies look more into the money-to-be-made and the control of "cells", rather than the outcome of their "work".
The story has many story tracks, all with a different aspect of the issues.
Gerrard and Dave are interesting and one both feels wonder that such beings/animals/? may come to being and fear that they will.

5.8 Freedom to Read

Looking for Alaska by John Green #77 on list #1

5.9. Comfort Read

Strip by Thomas Perry

Looking for Alaska was required reading for both my kids in high school and it might be the only book that they both ever liked. I can see why it was challenged- it contains almost every teenage sin. But it had real authenticity and thought. I'm glad my school used it to start a dialogue with their students.

Strip is my 18th Thomas Perry book- smart, fast, fun and calculating. Perry won the Edgar for best first novel with The Butcher's Boy in 1983. Perry's Jane Whitefield 5 book series Vanishing Act (book 1) was really good, but 9/11 security changes really impacted these books about a woman who helps abused women escape and create new identities. His later books use many of the same elements and always surprise.

Antigone by Sophocles (translated into English since I don't read Greek!)

I'd read Antigone a few times before and re-read it yesterday. Sophocles isn't my favorite of the Greek playwrights (I prefer Aristophanes' comedies) but since I have to teach Sophocles I'll take Antigone over overdone Oedipus any day! I feel like it touches on many of the same themes and has the same tragic structure, and Antigone is a more sympathetic character than anyone in Oedipus.
